Nice list. But surely there are loads missing? Like Jack U, Far East Movement, Pet Shop Boys, D12, Silk Sonic, Swedish House Mafia, Migos, Roll Deep, Erasure, THE BEATLES, Magnetic Man, Oasis, The Chainsmokers, LF System, The Cataracs, Major Lazer, Rae Sremmurd, Rizzle Kicks, Bad Meets Evil, Supermonde, Sidemen, Arctic Monkeys, etc. I'm going to stop because I could be here for hours.

I'm discounting rock bands, so The Beatles*, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Nirvana, Kings of Leon, The 1975 and anyone else in that vein aren't included! There's countless artists like this and I don't think they sit too comfortably in a list next to One Direction, Take That, Westlife and so forth.
I'm mainly leaning towards including pop and r&b acts for this thread, so I'm not too sure about venturing into dance and hip-hop genre acts either. Then again I included Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and they're hip-hop. I feel like there has to be some kind of limit to what this thread is focusing on. There's too many male acts! From your suggestions, I guess Pet Shop Boys and Erasure could be included though? Do any of you think that Years & Years should be in this list? Other ones that I considered are The Commodores, Lighthouse Family, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Spandau Ballet... I wasn't too sure. * I guess some would see The Beatles as being the original boy band, but many would regard them as completely transcending that terminology? I'm honestly not sure if they should be included or not. |

For me, the term boy band refers to a pop band where the looks and image of the band are part of the marketing.
Also I wouldn’t seriously have expected you to have included London Boys - but is very kind of you to add them <3 |

I'm 99% certain that Hanson - Thinking of You is some kind of database glitch... It wasn't a particularly big hit in 1998 (chart run: 23-52-67-71-71-71-out-83-69-100). BPI have it as certifying Silver on 16.02.2018 and Gold on 24.12.2021. Yet on Spotify it only has 2,040,556 streams (worldwide) which is really low. By comparison the aforementioned 'All or Nothing' by O-Town has over 80 million streams on Spotify (again, worldwide figures). I checked Apple Music and Deezer and 'Thinking of You' isn't amongst Hanson's most popular songs. So that strikes me as being very curious. Maybe try contacting them regarding this, could be the Gold certification was meant for “Where’s The Love”? If it’s worldwide Spotify streams are only at 2m something is definitely up |

All these latest suggestions don't fit imho Erasure and PSB were not boy bands, kinda like the opposite, boy bands of the 80s were Bros and Brother Beyond etc no teenage girls were going hysterical with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe.
Maybe Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet yes |

Updated! Although I've still not included Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. I'll try and get around to that.
Nice that The Wanted's Greatest Hits went Silver in May, I hadn't noticed that until now. Confused about Backstreet Boys - 'The Hits - Chapter One' album. It says it certified Silver on 14th April 2023, but it already certified Platinum on 30th November 2001 as 'Greatest Hits - Chapter One'. They're the same album. It was known as 'The Hits - Chapter One' in the US, but everywhere else it was marketed as 'Greatest Hits - Chapter One'. |

Amazing work! I agree in not including PSB and Erasure. I would probably remove other duos that have a vocalist and an instrumentalist - such as Savage Garden (even though they are one of my favourite groups) and Hurts (I assume they are the same) - but the reality is, it would be impossible to find a simple, cut-off line or definition.
As for Wham! It is a very rare example of a song being given silver status twice. Either because it was one of the first pre-1994 songs that had already been certified, to reach that level again digitally. Or alternatively, because of the reason that has already been suggested – that the double A-side was counted separately to the individual track. However, at some point, they must’ve said to themselves either a) we won’t give the same song the same certification again any more! or b) regardless of whether it was a double A-side, we will no longer count Last Christmas as a new track to the double A-side. It could well be connected with the fact that it was considered a new release when it entered the chart in the digital era, unlike, say, Mariah Carey - and therefore has two entries in the OCC database. Interestingly, I have a feeling that when Last Christmas was re-released in 1985 and 1986 (or at least one of the two) even though it was considered a re-entry, it was actually a re issue WITHOUT Everything She Wants (I think more detail used to be given on Wikipedia, but it has now been removed – however, it’ does still suggest that ‘Blue - Live In China’ became the B-Side). |

I think The Beatles are the original boyband for sure. They initially appealed to the teen girl audience and I'd say McFly are very early Beatles. They have transcended that somewhat though.
Ps thanks for the list very interesting! |

Updated! Certifications from July 2023 onwards:
Singles 2xPlatinum: One Direction - Drag Me Down One Direction - Steal My Girl Take That - Patience Platinum: Another Level - Freak Me One Direction - You & I Westlife - Swear It Again Gold: Blue - One Love BTS - Boy with Luv JLS - The Club Is Alive PJ & Duncan - Let's Get Ready to Rhumble The Vamps - Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) The Vamps - Wild Heart The Wanted - Walks Like Rihanna Silver: 112 - Only You Busted - Sleeping with the Light On Jonas Brothers - Cool Jonas Brothers - Waffle House One Direction - Stockholm Syndrome Albums 4xPlatinum: Take That - Greatest Hits Gold: BTS - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever NKOTBSB - NKOTBSB Silver: BTS - BTS, the Best BTS - Proof If I missed anything from July, August, September & October, let me know! NKOTBSB - NKOTBSB going Gold: It went Silver (60k+) on 26.02.2021 and Gold (100k+) on 18.08.2023. That's 40k in 129 weeks, 310 sales a week on average. It's a bit of an odd album really, two boy bands merging a handful of their hits into one release. The album didn't chart when it was released in 2011, but evidently it including 5 Backstreet Boys singles and 5 NKOTB singles has made it do reasonably well on streaming. |
