Doctor Blind Chart - 4th August 2019

Zambian born and now Australia based Sampa The Great aka Sampa Tempo has been on the ascent for some time now with her unique blend of soul, gospel, jazz and hip-hop - and finally breaks through with standout single “Final Form” - a triumphant ode to her Zambian heritage, which this week jumps to #1 and knocks out Philadelphia's Alex Giannascoli (stage name: (Sandy) Alex G) after three weeks in pole position with “Gretel”. “Final Form” heavily samples 1970s soul/funk classic “Stay Away From Me” by The Sylvers to great effect and is the first single to be taken from the singer’s debut The Return, which incidentally is released on the same day as Alex G's new album House of Sugar (both due 13th Sep.) By slipping 1-2 “Gretel” just misses out on equalling the longest run at #1 in 2019 which is currently held by eclectic Londoners The Comet Is Coming (“Summon The Fire”, down 43-47 in its 19th week).

Three new singles break the Top 10, led by Friendly Fires who score a twelfth consecutive Top 10 hit (they have never missed the Top 10 in 11 years) with “Silhouettes” leaping 12-7. It is the follow-up to “Lack Of Love” (#3 in April) and was launched with the announcement that their first album for 8 years Inflorescent is due for release later this month. Hot Chip return to the Top 10 with “Melody Of Love” inching up from 11-9 after the brilliant “Hungry Child” racked up three consecutive weeks at number two and almost gave them a 5th number 1 hit in May. Surging 17-10 and rounding out the Top 10's new entrants is 44 year-old Sufjan Stevens who was only in the Top 10 last year with “Mystery Of Love” which peaked at #2 but became the fifth biggest single of 2018. “Love Yourself” is an updated demo from 1996 released with “With My Whole Heart” to celebrate Pride month (June).

There are six debuts on the chart this week, led by TR/ST (a Canadian electronic group founded by Robert Alfons) and “Iris” which starts at #36 - and aims to match the two Top 10 hits already chalked up in 2019; “Gone” (#4 in March) and “Unbleached” (#6 in June). Haim make a long overdue return with the saxophone infused “Summer Girl” at #39 - and Ride are back at #40 with “Repetition” hoping to provide some repetition following their first ever #1 “Future Love” (this week slipping 6-12). sir Was and Little Dragon return and team up with the wonderful “Deployed” at 43 and Four Tet returns for a third time this year (following two #7 hits “Only Human” and “Teenage Birdsong”) as “Dreamer” enters at #50 to take the baton from “Teenage Birdsong”, which slips 34-48 after 12 weeks on. The only debut by an as-yet uncharted artist is from London four-piece GHUM whose grungy and dark pop anthem “Saturn” opens its account at #45.

Oh I like that Sampa the Great track too, good choice! Also approving (in particular) of the inclusions of Jenny Hval, Charli & Christine, Thom Yorke, Hatchie and, of course, Robyn.

Plus Róisín whose single I absolutely adore, it's made me revisit all of her recent material and I'm loving everything I hear. Can't wait for the new album.

I'm hoping that she puts out all of her recent house/dance singles on an album. Overpowered is an exceptionally good album and I frequently return to it, and to make us all feel old it has been almost exactly 20 years since “Sing It Back” made the Top 10 on its re-release. Things To Make And Do with “Pure Pleasure Seeker” and “The Time Is Now” was also a strong album!

Another Sampa fan here, she was one of my random picks to see at Glastonbury and she was excellent, have been enjoying Final Form for a few weeks now.

Unusually nothing for me to check out from your new songs. The Haim song is great and have been enjoying the TR/ST, Four Tet and Ghum tracks - all been added to my playlist recently

I've made a version of the album with all the house tracks - I particularly found myself loving Like, The Rumble, Innocence, Plaything, Can't Hang On and All My Dreams as well as the sublime Incapable.

Overpowered is indeed incredible, it made my list of albums that were good enough to re-purchase on vinyl. I also am loving revisiting Forever More, Familiar Feeling, Sow Into You, Over & Over, Unputdownable, Exploitation and The Time Is Now. I've always liked her but recently she's grown into adoration status.
