15th November 1992

It's unexpectedly up to the top spot after 10 weeks dithering for BoyzIIMen's End Of The Road. I wasn't convinced, then it grew on me, then it convinced me it was really good, and then I found myself falling out of love with it over the years. They had better records, but they also had much worse records (to come). The one that should have topped this week was Charles & Eddy, now there's a track that sounds better with time. Cher becomes the 2nd act to make Oh No Not My Baby a top 10 song, after Rod Stewart's 1973 version, but I'd still go for a Carole King version of her own song, myself.

Heaven 17 just fall short of the top 10, that's Temptation, and Sade re-enters at a new peak of 26 after under-performing with No Ordinary Love, and even that's far short of where it deserves to be, but it'll be back in 1993 for another go. The highest new track is The B52's Is That You Mo-Dean, quirky as ever at 34, as Dr. Alban's It's My Life drops out the chart, but also enters with follow-up One Love at 45. Definition Of Sound return again with Can I Get Over in at 60, and there's re-entries from Vivienne McKOne and Galliano.

MC Mario and mates drop in with SuperMarioLand, a massive computer game that otherwise passed me by, as it culturally has ever since, in movies, music and anything else, but there's no way I could have foreseen that Universal Studios Florida (which I had already been to a few times) would be building a 3rd huge new Theme Park down the road from Universal number one in 2024, part of which is a themed around Mario. It'll be huge, along with the Harry Potter part 2, Universal Monsters and other areas.

Gerry Rafferty is still charting for me, but tragically he'll be passing away in just over a year, and Madness make a comeback ahead of their UK chart comeback in 5 years time, The Harder They Come. That leaves Vaya Con Dios returning after a City break in Amsterdam or Paris (I forget which one, Paris I think) let me buy the vinyl single they had out circa 1990/1991. I was in a Spanish restaurant about 15 years later, and an elderly chap with a guitar who was singing Spanish music asked if I had any requests, so I picked the only one I thought he would know that I would know - Vaya Con Dios. He was very good and seemed pleased with the request.

22nd November 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for BoyzIIMen, holding off a double threat from Michael Jackson and the late Otis Redding. Heal The World had grabbed a couple of places as an album track, but now out as a single it smashes in at 2 a year after I first went keen on it. Dock Of The Bay pre-dated my chart, but was a huge fave in the late 60's and early 70's, and had charted in 1974 as a re-issue for me, but now hits a new peak of 3 on a second re-issue. Madonna's best track on Erotica also gets a single release, should have been the lead single - Deeper And Deeper debuts at 9.

Another album track drops as a single at 26 for Prince, still releasing good stuff with "7", but ti's not long to go before he sabotages his own career by "killing off" Prince and emerging as "Symbol". Celine pops back in at 31 for me, a new peak for Love Can Move Mountains, and ditto Enya at 36 with The Celts. Kylie Minogue meanwhile covers Kool & The Gang and is rewarded with a number 50 debut, as the soul/dance covers keep on coming until she gets some better new material.

Down the bottom end, Take That are back with a cover of the Barry Manilow/Donna Summer hit rewrite of a classical tune, Could It Be Magic at 74? At 75, Michael Bolton does his best to ruin The Bee Gees' brilliant To Love Somebody, as covered by Nina Simone and Jimmy Somerville to decent result.

I don't know a reason, but her "Nah Neh Nah" single still popular and have good airplay on radiostations in my country. In my chart "Just a Friend of Mine" peaked at # 8 .

never heard that Nah Neh track, it's quite catchy actually so I can see why it gets played, it's sort of Spanish guitar goes Swing. I first heard Vaya Con Dios in Paris, they never got played in the UK!

29th November 1992

It's 2 weeks on top for BoyzIIMen, who preside over an avalanche of new entries. Heaven 17 get the Temptation Remix 2 slots lower then the 1983 original, and Prince grabs another top 10 with 7 at 6, but the action is lower down the chart as highest entry goes to Carter, The Unstoppable Sex Machine's cover of the Don Quixote "Man Of La Mancha" musical showstopper The Impossible Dream, in at 15. An unlikely cover, but it works and I love the song, mostly Glen Campbell's version I knew prior to this one.

New at 19 Stereo MC's return with their best record, possibly, Step It Up, and Cliff is back strong at 27 with a sweet but not nauseating ballad I Still Believe In You for a 24th year of charting, for me. Meanwhile Bob Marley back catalogue revamping continues with the rather good actually Why Should I at 29. Shabba Ranks joins Johnny Gill on Slow And Sexy. I still enjoy hearing Jonathan Ross say Shabba Ranks. Maxi Priest keeps the reggae hits coming at 33, and Whitney's back at a new peak with her A Star Is Born overblown anthem destruction of a Country classic, 38.

Rod has a decent, if slightly dull, revamp of the unofficial Australian National Anthem, but I'll take Frank Ifield's version over-all, and Diana Ross continues the decline into bland balladry at 50. Chris Rea replaces himself in the chart with a Banana Skin, reputedly God's great one, just ahead of another ballad from U2. Wild Horses apparently COULD persuade me to chart it, and The Pasadenas cover the classic Let's Stay Together unnecessarily.

On a more lively note, The Prodigy return with the bouncy Out Of Space, lower but better than most of the new ones above it. Jason Donovan follows up the Joseph biggie (and lesser hits afterwards) with a cover of the classic 40's movie Casablanca song As Time Goes By. He's no Dooley Wilson! Sade claims to Feel No Pain as she boots No Ordinary Love out the chart, REM sing about the late comic actor Andy Kaufman Man On The Moon, not nearly as funny as Taxi, his hit TV show with the great ensemble cast that made a star out of Danny De Vito, Judd Hirsch and others. Oh, and Genesis return with a live version of the song I forgot the title of live on the Radio One Roadshow in 1986 on Mike Read's Pop Quiz - now that's just taking the piss out of me even more than Mike took the piss out of my jumper! I'm sure they did it on purpose to get revenge.

6th December 1992

It's a 1968 classic from Otis Redding to bump off the last month of the year, (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay was a great posthumous hit for Otis and it featured on the first various artists compilation album dad bought in 1969 Singapore, so it forms a huge sentimental memory of the late 60's/early 70's for me. Madonna is up to 3, and the top 10 has 4 debutantes, with Stereo MC's keeping the run going, Deacon Blue getting their 2nd, WMF and 2nd too, and Cliff grabbing a late-career 24th year of top 10's. There wouldn't be many more hitting that high though after this.

Two megamixes of oldies enter, Boney M at 14 and Gloria Estefan at 40, heading a bit of an invasion of newies. Bananarama are back for an 11th year with Las Thing On MY Mind, a future hit cover for Steps, but UK flop - but not here, in at 32. Pretty Vacant keeps the Sex Pistols oldies coming at 34, 15 years on from going top 20, Nirvana get a 3rd top 40, In Bloom, and 60's hitster Darlene Love is back with no Phil Spector needed for her great Christmas Home Alone track All Alone At Christmas.

The Shamen and Dina Carroll keep the runs of hits coming, The Lemonheads do a decent cover of Simon & Garfunkels' Mrs Robinson movie theme, last in my chart in 1969, and 808 State revamp UB40's One In Ten 12 years on from going top 10 for me. Take That cover Barry Manilow dancepop stylee, so more Donna Summer-cover really, Freddie Mercury gets a posthumous entry, KWS try to kill another 70's classic, this time The Trammps 1975 disco goodie, Hold Back The Night, Bobby Borwn extends his chart run to 9 years, Suzanne Vega to 6, Lionel Richie to 18 years (with Commodores) and Richard Marx around ooh 5 years or so.

13th December 1992

It's 1 more chart to Christmas, and Madonna gets an early seat on top with Deeper And Deeper, her 11th chart-topper to date, with Roxette bounding up to 2 on Queen Of Rain, their highest chart position since It Must Have Been Love and Listen To Your Heart/Dangerous topped my charts in 1990. Boney M's megamix gives them a first top 10 since 1979, and a 10th in total. Highest new entry is a return run for MotownPhilly, BoyzII Men in at 20 for 2 in the top 20. A nice 70's throwback track.

Gary Glitter is on his usual Christmas booze-up tour, and plugs his new track (with bonus classic Glam hits on it) Through The Years in at 23, his highest slot since 1984, I think, due to me seeing his Bournemouth concert this week. The choice picks (see below) had 3 big ballads and 3 frantic glam monsters, not my usual faves necessarily as Remember Me This Way is pretty rubbish by and large.

Mike Oldfield follows up Sentinel with a Tattoo in at 30, keeping the Tubular Bells II momentum going, there's a TV-related wrestling entry, a musical show entry, covers of Morning Has Broken (giving Neil Diamond 22 years of charting) and Because The Night (No idea who they are), and new tracks from Lisa Stansfield keeping her run alive, Morrissey extending his chart career to 19 years, and Shai, I think a US r'n'b act. Only Lisa Stansfield's is memorable in 2024, though I know Tattoo was good, and so was MotownPhilly as regards new stuff.

Good taste! biggrin.gif I just peeked to next week's chart and we will be Christmas concurring! cheer.gif laugh.gif Just 2 more charts to go and 1992 is done, 1993 remaining weeklies to post and I can go back to the much-delayed final quarter of 1995 to finish that year - I might even be back on track to be 30th anniversaries digital conversions for 1995/6 and 7 and I'm completely digital from 1984. yay!

20th December 1992 CHRISTMAS CHART

It's 2 weeks on top for Madonna as she keeps all the actual Christmas wannabees off the top with the fab Deeper And Deeper, and I must admit I had totally forgotten Cliff's effort for 1992, the rather sweet I Still Believe In You, and that I actually rated it! This comes as a big surprise to me as I'd thought Saviour's Day was his last big attempt in my charts, but this one is his highest-charting single (with new stuff) since Daddy's Home in 1981 hit 2 as well. Darlene Love meanwhile outpeaks her 60's classic Spector Xmas hit at 5, All Alone On Christmas.

The Shamen grab another top 10, Phorever People and Mike Oldfield gets 2 Tubular Top Ten's in a row, his 7th or so in 18 years. Highest new entry is the latest lead track off the new album, Hope Of Deliverance, giving Paul McCartney 24 charting years to date at 14. It's pretty catchy, and good, as Rolf Harris also debuts at 18 with a bizarre cover of Led Zep's Stairway To Heaven rock classic. It's done in traditional Rolf acoustic 60's style, from sheet music, Rolf never having heard the song before. It works, giving a nostalgia boost to 60's and 70's kids brought up on Radio 2's Junior Choice and TV variety shows. 23 years of charting for Rolf, but actually Sun Arise and many of his novelty songs would have topped my charts as a kid - if I'd been doing them.

Uncanny Alliance Ive not heard in 32 years, it's not bad catchy chantalong dance with 90's production, I Got My Education new at 22, Boy George is new at 23 with his latest gentle 60's psychedelia-influenced pop track, Sweet Toxic Love, which is rather good, US r'n'b boyband Louie Louie chart with a Michael-Jackson-ish rockdance bop to little effect (I prob liked the video), Arrested follow-up with the pleasant Mr Wendal, Brand New Heavies keep on funking, East Side Beat try to dancify another rock classic, and Michael Bolton destroys Drift Away.

Meanwhile, I see that I went to see Extreme in concert and only noted 2 songs worthy of mentioning from the night out. This probably explains why I had totally forgotten I paid good money to see them. I think it was on the back of an impressive Freddie Mercury Concert performance, and most likely because my mate rated it and them. That I dont recall a single thing about the evening probably is not flattering for either the band or for my ageing memory. One or the other, and I'd have to check my diary of the time to work out which it is...

27th December 1992

It's straight in on top for another re-issued ABBA song - This time it's nominally Thank You For The Music as part of a New Year's Eve themed trio of singalongs, but the extra CD tracks are the best bit: Happy New Year and The Way Old Friends Do, could both easily have been A sides in their own right in 1980, or a double A preferably. So, justice is done and in they enter. It's a bit of ABBA Christmas and ABBA New Year, as 3 other tracks climb, One More Time debut with Highland at 33 (Swedish band not a million miles away from ABBA) and Bjorn Again return again with an Abba-aping christmas classic cover at 39.

U2 drop another track off the latest album as an early 1993 single, Wild Horses didn't drag me to buy it though, new at 44, and Lionel Richie keeps them coming for an 18th year. It's no machine Gun though.

There's a big fave for me in Love Is Holy, plus Kim's, Belinda's, Bjorn Again's and Prob Olivia's too that I like - and I've seen all of them in concert, so I rate them enough to buy a ticket! Kim I've seen about 5 times, always fab wub.gif
