I'm guessing they wanted to boost the number of black groups. Soul II Soul are the only other one on the list.

Hot Chocolate would have been a better inclusion imo, or Eternal, but I guess they wanted to sidestep the recent Bennett sisters' controversy.

Oooh. Little Mix coming top 5 even without my vote (I'm annoyed I didn't vote as STEPS wouldn't have received many (if any) points from me - so I would have broken the tie!) but tbf, I'm not sure I would have been able to come up with 30 groups that I would have liked to have voted for and been happy with.

Love seeing Erasure in the radio 2 list, they are often snubbed for anything like this. On the whole I think the list is pretty well balanced across eras and types of music. Imagination jump out at me as being the ones I know very little about - unless I'm missing something I can't see why they would be included over some of the more successful acts. I'm not sure I'd put Wings in there either. Any band with Paul McCartney is always going to automatically get in despite other more successful acts being left out. Steps is really quite a glaring omission on that list seeing as they have 15 top 5 singles and #1 albums across 4 consecutive decades, then Westlife too with their numerous #1 singles and albums... They have just as much right to the list as Girls Aloud for instance if they are left off due to being "pop puppets" as pop acts often are on these type of things. Just noticed no S Club either, guess it's due to personal preference of the panelists too.

Westlife don't qualify due to being Irish but I agree that it's a shame that pretty much all of the prominent turn of the century (1998-2003 era) British pop acts got shut out, especially Steps and S Club 7 as arguably the two biggest and most impactful. But they never impressed the critics I suppose.

I'm more surprised at the omission of Roxy Music than anything else. An entire generation cited them as hugely influential. Practically all of the Post Punk bands, the New Romantics and any 'arty' band have said they owe a debt to them. Maybe the younger generations only know the later Sophisti-Pop hits and not the really important stuff.
