4. I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Nik Kershaw

Peak position - 2

This is a good, catchy pop song. I know Nik Kershaw and Howard Jones were not cool at the time but I liked them both. This single originally only got to no.47 but was re-released after 'Wouldn't It Be Good' and 'Dancing Girls' were hits.

3. Smalltown Boy - Bronski Beat

Peak position -3

A good song combining synth pop with a Hi-NRG sound and Jimmy Somerville's distinctive falsetto vocals. He left the group just a year later and they split up in 1995. Steve Bronski has reformed the group with another new singer and they are working on a new album.

2. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham!

Peak position - 1

This is not really my thing but I can't deny it's a great pure pop song. It was inspired by a note Andrew Ridgeley left for his parents. He accidentally wrote the word 'up' twice so he wrote the word 'go' twice as well.

1. Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Brilliant song,my favourite no.1 of the 80s. I bought the cassette single of this one as well. There were two 7'' singles and four 12'' singles released, helping to keep the song at no.1 for nine weeks.

My favourite three songs from this top 20:

1. Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
2. Dancing With Tears In My Eyes - Ultravox
3. I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Nik Kershaw

Co-incidentally,all three of those songs are about the prospect of nuclear war. Relax probably deserves to be in that top 3 but I didn't want to pick two songs by the same act.

Coming soon: a top 20 from the 90s.
