Simple question - With another flop single on her hands is Katy in danger of becoming irrelevant? I'm not sure that any album would do well as she hasn't had a hit single for quite a while now and for what ever reason she has lost her touch.

I do think that her political interests and very different image during the Witness album had damaged her massively.

Never really over would of been number 1 in her hey day but even that great song struggled to set the charts alight.

I just don't know where she goes from here apart from cashing in on with a greatest hits album and tour .

I've pretty much thought she's over since 'Small Talk' happened. sad.gif

I don't see how she claws her way back now.

People thought she was going to have a massive uphill struggle before Never Really Over too, and look what happened! It was quite apt too, because I really don't think it's over for Katy yet. All she needs to do is release another undeniable killer anthem and she's back riding high in the chart again.

Another "Feels" would do good for her career so teaming up with Calvin/Marshmello/Meduza?

She's not over yet but HIH will most likely be her first single to miss top 40 in the UK and Hot 100 in the US.

A- Like Joseph says she had a massive hit, literally 2 songs ago and a #1 on a collab (partly coz of her name being with Calvin) a couple of years ago.

B- I'm intrigued but why can't an album work? There are plenty of artists who still get hit/moderate selling albums with no hits nowadays. She'll need to do a bit of a shift and go down the R2/adult contemporary route, but another hit album isn't out of the question, either.

She became irrelevant with Witness. There's no coming back from that. This is historic levels of floppage. The only other example is Nelly Furtado and she's been singing songs in parking lots ever since!

Chained to the Rhythm has over 400M listens on Spotify. That was a big hit without a question.

You all are so harsh on her sad.gif

But it's true that she needs to find a great song, a ballad like Lose You to Love Me perhaps, and start a new from there. Or do a round of features.

She is not even close to being on Nelly Furtado's level! Nelly hasn't had a hit single in 10 years and about 3 flop albums under her belt. Katy's "Witness" album was a flop but still outsold the last 3 Nelly albums combined and multiplied by about 10.

Katy is definitely on the way down but bare in mind "Never Really Over" is a hit, a small one but a hit. She can still achieve moderate success that many artists dream of.

Katy just needs to go away for a little while and build a bit of hype. Nobody is going to care about a song released a few weeks after a flop. She needs to go back in hiding for at least half a year and come back with a banger, like she did with Never Really Over - which, even though it was her first solo single in a while would have probably debuted higher with even more buzz if Con Calma and 365 had not come so soon before.

I've no doubt she's way past her days of having massive smashes, she's 35 and 11 years into her career, so people need to adjust their expectations if they're still holding her to that.. Rihanna had the 3-punch of Towards the Sun > BBHMM > American Oxygen all of which flopped (BBHMM did well enough but still nowhere near as well as NRO) and she was absolutely fine afterwards. And you've got people like Miley and Beyonce I doubt they're gonna be written off for ever after these few underperformances.

I think the issue is that they got Never Really Over, which could've been a block-builder for a way on the charts, but clearly were lacking anything of that calibre to follow it up on. She basically needs to a solid run of hits in place again before even thinking about launching an album, but if it was that easy all artists would do that. I think she might have a few more moderate hits, but her #1 days are long gone.

Guess it also depends how you define 'irrelevant'. If you mean chart-wise potentially, but I'd never say for the rest of her life that Christina Aguilera will be IRRELEVANT because the legacy she's left behind means she'll always have a fair level of interest. Madonna's no longer hitting the top 40 or 100 but she's obviously not irrelevant.

I don't think she'll ever hit lofty heights again but as Joe said, 11 years into her career, she's still had a hit this year and plenty of critical acclaim - she's hardly burnt out to the point that nobody even talks about her anymore. She's just not a top-tier popstar anymore.

Are there any top tier females left? I can think of Adele, Ariana, Rita Ora and maybe Taylor, still can get chart hits in the UK. Everyone else though? Sure you have the Dua Lipa's, the Zara Larsson's, but I'm not sure they ever reached the heights of the A-tier popstars.

I think witness killed her career. She has never recovered properly since but to be fair the newer material just isn’t as good as the first three albums. Most artists have a shelf life of 3-5 years with 2-3 strong albums and anything more is usually exceptional rather than the norm.

Dua and Zara all depend on their 2nd era. I feel Dua is in a really strong position though. She can just as easily do a Camila and fail to deliver on the hype but I'd probably say Dua will more than likely be a top tier female.

Agreed that Katy won't be "top tier" anymore, but she was far too big to ever be "irrelevant". In a very similar way to Christina, actually.

Most of you go so far with Katy and I really don't get why, when she's actually in a stronger position than a lot of other pop females who are deemed relevant...

Zara's already bombed in her second era. Career is dead unless she pulls a Robyn in about 10 years or so. angel.gif

Katy being shady to Britney ruined her career tbh.
