The demo version of 'Butterfly' has emerged this week, this is what it originally sounded like before it evolved into the poppers O'clock delight we all know and love.
It's quite reminiscent of Dannii's 'Girl' era in terms of its sound. |

The demo isnt bad at all but obviously not as great as what we have now. I have always been a big fan of butterfly

This sounds pretty good, a very 90's sound to it. Of course doesn't compare to the final version, but very interesting though. I would love to hear what 'Spinning Around' originally sounded like, because apparently that had a guitar section in it.

I'm interested to know when this version came about. Despite what the photo in the YouTube video may suggest, I can't find anything online that suggests this came from the Impossible Princess era, other than it was co-written by Steve Anderson. I was also under the impression that Kylie signed to Parlophone with every intention of creating a pop record and that version of 'Butterfly' doesn't seem to fit that.
I prefer the final version and it's hard not to think about that when listening to this demo, but I do think it works really well in its demo form. Very late 90s sounding, kinda reminds me of Madonna's Ray of Light album actually. |

Kylie def signed to parlophone to make a pop album as I remember her saying that and to be fair light years hit the nail on the head.the first time I listened to the album I remember been very excited by kylie again and really felt it was a whopper of a comeback that was so unpredicted by many. I just loved the light years era in full.

The album version is better than the demo. Butterfly is a great track and a lot better than some of her later singles from the Parlophone era. I still think Light Years could have been pushed a lot more with further singles as it was packed with potential hits.

Totally agree about the singles and for me a few of the album tracks were better than all the singles and there are not many albums I can say that about.

That's not hard though - for me On A Night Like This, Kids and Please Stay are duds in her singles discography (especially the former). I'd say both Butterfly and Light Years deserved the single treatment, but I can see why OANLT and PS were chosen as both are very radio friendly "crowd pleasers" (and obviously, not releasing a Robbie Williams duet at that point would've just been stupid).

I wouldn't refer to it as a dud but i don't share the same love for the song like many others do.
I would however, refer to it as a good single and probably the best single from Light years despite it not been the best track from the album. |

I'd have liked a Spring 2001 single and if it couldn't be 'Your Disco Needs You' then I think 'Butterfly' would have been a great choice. It certainly packs a punch and a video had the potential to be fantastic. We know the clubs loved it so I think it would have been wise to capitalise on that. It's often felt like Kylie's team, whoever they were, were hesitant to push her club potential, like during the Let's Get To It and Impossible Princess where they favoured the more chart/radio-friendly tracks.

Agree with this - also odd that ‘Butterfly’ got LOADS of remixes and was released on an indie label in the US (And the CD single now sells for £50+) but was never pushed outside of this. |

Butterfly despite the team not wanting to push her club potential showed signs that it could have been a hit if pushed.
I would be certain Butterfly would have become a far bigger hit than Please Stay. The CD single did offer some wonderful remixes of the song that really highlighted its potential. The song translated brilliantly on the tour too. |

I was lucky enough to get the CD single for a good price at the time which I'm always happy about,it has some great remixes but the original remains the best.
