I've always meant to start a topic like this but never got round to it so thought it was a good idea when I couldn't sleep at 5am ;o
We regard Umbrella, We Found Love et al as Rih's classics but what did y'all think of them when they first came out? Time to find out. (This was a bit of a learning exercise for me as I'd never seen about half of Buzzjack's 2007 posters before :')) Umbrella (reaction immediately after it leaked): OMFG SO ORIGINAL I have it if anyone has it, I think this could be her first #01. It deserves to be, its facking amazing, sounds like really NOTHING else out there, Jay Z really isn't needed which is probably my only problem but other than that it really is THE SEX SRSLY # YOU CAN STAND UNDER MY UMBRELLA EY EY EY EY # If you want, just ask. YOU CAN STAND UNDER MY UMBRELLA EY EY EY EY love this too her 1st UK #1 and her 2nd US #1 on the way Though it's quite different to her usual stuff it's fantastic! I've got a no rap edit, it's just got Jay-Z saying 'uh-huh' at the start. I was just on a board *which will remain nameless* but they were hatin on this song...I actually like it. I think it will deffo be a hit...wonder what the vid will look lyk Don't wish to be a hater, but I'm gutted I loved all her last singles, and the album was okay, but I was expecting so much more Amazing. I pray for #1 on both sides of the Atlantic and all I can say is bring on Good Girl Gone Bad, judging from Umbrella it sounds very promising. Love it any news when its out AMAZINGNESS I will murder various people if this is denied number one anywhere Fukin LOOOVE this! Amazing tune! Everyone seemed pretty sure it would be a hit, apart from someone who thought 'We Ride' was better than it 👀 |

We Found Love:
Euphoric! EEEEEEEEEEE. Yessss, this was exactly what I was hoping for it to be! Ahhhh incredible. SHE CAN DO NO WRONG. Sounds great on first listen, and really not at all like the 'usual' Calvin Harris sound either, he's become a lot more than the one trick pony his debut album suggested he would be! Just Heard this on Kiss 100 WOw Rihanna actaully can do no wrong she just out with banger after nager defor number 1 Doesn't sound like anything amazing after the first listen, doesn't seem to go anywhere and the chorus is so repetitive, although some of the instrumental pieces are funky. Definitely not what I expected and it's really more fluffy than I would have wanted. It's going to be stuck in my head all week though. For a lead single from an internationally successful popstar how can you really go much edgier than this? I think it's risky, different and most importantly VERY GOOD on first listen. It strikes me as a grower. Great vox. It's alright. I expected much better but this is very pedestrian. Our very own Cremey stanning from the beginning *.* Not the most positive reception for what is often considered Rihanna's best song with Aly who's still a passing poster in this forum not being too fond of it! Will be doing more of these in the next few weeks so watch this space ~ |

lol my reaction to 'We Found Love' was also pretty negative IIRC. I thought it was super generic.

I loved WFL at first I think but I've gone off it a fair bit, definitely her most overrated song as it's probably between lke 25-40 in her best songs for me oops. I remember being unsure of Umbrella at first, but I had an awful habit of hating songs at first then like 2 listens later deciding I loved them when I was younger

Take A Bow:
It's Brilliant I was soo shocked like ''What the heck are they doing, rushing another album in one f***ing year'' But now thank you, it's from a re-release (bad idea) but I absolutely love the song! Is there a chorus in there? This is the most pointless re-release ever. Firstly, the album is doing fine. Secondly, there are still loads of potential singles on the album. Lastly, the song is rubbish. If you have an amazing song that needs to be put out there, fair enough, but this bag of w***? I'm not a fan of this AT ALL. Much better songs on the actual album I don't like this. Breakin' Dishes better be released before it Really like it I really don't like this. A rerelease is ridiculous. I really hope they release Breakin' Dishes instead or in addition..something.. I dont get why people are hating on this song, its brill! I know, I love it! I can kind of relate to it too which helps. A generally negative response to Rih's second UK #1 single 'Take A Bow' Pray for Buzzjack ha 2008 taste |

'Take A Bow'
In my top 3 RiRi tracks. It's so stunning. Can't believe it's 9 years old though <3 |

Diamonds:
I LOVE it (no surprises there)! It's quite different to the usual RiRi stuff we get, whilst not being too different. Very pleased with it. THIS IS SO INCREDIBLE I WANNA CRY. OOH I WASN'T EXPECTING THAT AT ALL FAB. BRILLIANT. I love that she changes it up every album, surely another number 1 for RiRi? !!! That's so good. What a way to cheer me up after a boring lecture. Brb playing this to death. YESSS. Getting definite Sia vibes from it! Loving it, I'm glad she didn't play it too 'safe' this time around! I always think it's stupid to rate a song that been out for a couple of hours, in comparison to songs that have been out for years. I like that it's very different sounding. Her voice annoys me a bit in the chorus, I'm sure it will grow. That is really good! Hoping the rest of the album will be up to the same quality as that. TTT wasn't anywhere near as good as WFL I thought. Not as amazing as some comments are making out. I actually find it a bit dull in places but I do love the 'shine bright like a diamond' hook. It sounded really good at first, but it really drags on and on. I found myself bored by the end of the song. Rih's best song getting a very positive reception from Buzzjack, with even known Diamonds hater Aly not being too negative on it! |

Russian Roulette:
Like the cover. Song is meh. Very disappointed. 'The Wait Is Ova' clip thing sounded better lol. F. U. C. K. M. E! Just premiered on Radio 1! WTF?! They kept THAT quiet! It's much slower and more tame (?) than I thought it'd be. I thought it'd be some sort of 'banger' from what I'd heard about it... I still like it a lot. Don't know if it's a suitable comeback song though. It's $h!t. oOo its good, but not amazing, thought it would be fast! Letdown?! I hope it's a grower. How boring, even Take A Bow was better than this.

Hahaha wow at those reactions. Also ughh at my first post about it.
It definitely seemed like a big risk for her at the time, definitely paid off though. Absolutely love it 😍 Love this idea for a thread btw Andrew, love reading people's first impressions haha. |

Russian Roulette remains flawless. As does that whole era, tbh.

Work (feat. Drake):
What is that thing she keeps doing with her voice lately? I HATE it. The beat is good though, shame she ruins it with her recent tone deaf musical ability C.R.A.P. It's just a bit there. I like the tropical vibe but that's the kind of song noone would bother listening twice if it weren't Rihanna. It should be a grower once the chorus is added Drake is great though The WORST she has put out in a looooong time. She sounds like she's gargling on it. I listened to it three times now and.. not a big fan. I'm sure it will grow but I can't see this be a hit, especially not in The Netherlands as we always snub her more urban tunes. yall seriously telling me this won't set you on fire when u hear it in tha club?? This is f***ing terrible. I've completely given up on her at this point. Only Tim, Adam and Jake know where it's at tbh |
