Hi all,

I started compiling this recently, and wondered if this was something that could be of interest here. Basically I check the Spotify daily chart for Great Britain for each day, and then pick out only those tracks that are at least 10 years old (I generally refer to the date of its chart debut to decide a track's age, but for non-singles or those older tracks that didn't chart at the time but became classics later I sometimes use other criteria to avoid any nonsensical inclusions/exclusions). If people are interested in this then I can endeavour to maintain this on here every day, with a double on Fridays to also include a retro chart derived from the OCC's weekly official chart. I can stop including exact numbers of streams if the mods wish, but have included them for this post to show what I am compiling at the moment. I would also like to back calculate the retro charts for every day in the past that had a Spotify daily chart, but they're only available on the spotifycharts website from 1st Jan 2017 onwards, so that be the practical limit for how far back I can go, unless I can find older spotify charts elsewhere.

Here's what the charts would look like for the last few days, obviously they will vary in length from day to day. And note that the number one on these days, Mt Brightside, is on course to enter the top 50 of the OCC Official chart again this week, for its 51st Top 100 stint and its 209th Top 100 week, that's a combined total of 4 years in the top 100!

Perhaps a weekly chart instead?
Although the chart still wouldn’t change much week on week, it seems to be the same retro songs every week that stream well.

I imagine apart from during big events the songs would have generally a similar order?

There's always Throwback Thursday every week too to shake up the order somewhat for one day but other than that it's always Mr Brightside, Wonderwall, Africa, Bohemian Rhapsody et al holding up well.

Good to see my BJSC 'Legends' entry,Mr Blue Sky,is on here. It's certainly approriate for the change in weather we've had recently.

And Africa by Toto would have been boosted by the BBC4 documentary on yacht rock in which Toto were heavily featured.

Here's the latest chart. I've worked backwards across most of June now, and so far this is one of the shortest charts. Throwback Thursday should throw a few more retro hits back into the charts for us tomorrow...

Just had a look at it. Some of them aren't that old really, more of a nudge back than a throwback. I wonder which tracks will make it into our retro chart tomorrow?

Toto's Africa has always been a big catalogue seller though, I just don't get why

Because it is one of the best songs of all time x

(I believe it was prominently featured on an episode of 'Family Guy' which won't have hurt its continuing relevance, although it's not like 'Surfin' Bird' in that it's a totally forgotten oddity that FG brought into the mainstream of course).

Is there a different TBT? tongue.gif

I'm seeing 70s songs from Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Supremes etc.

That's the American TBT. This is the UK one.

Ha, I nearly asked the same thing, as I found that one first too, despite being in the UK. On with our Throwback Thursday Retro Chart, and it seems to have been the predicatble favourites who got a lift this Thursday, particularly Whitney, even though she was quite far down the TBT list, so I presume cherry picking is the norm for people looking at the TBT playlist.

Thursday 4th July 2019
1. ~ The Killers – Mr Brightside – 132900 – 46th
2. ~ Oasis – Wonderwall – 72701 – 102nd

Hopefully 'Go Your Own Way' starts consistently beating 'Everywhere' soon, its a much better song I think.

Toto's Africa has always been a big catalogue seller though, I just don't get why
'Hold The Line' >>>>>> 'Africa' imo. Africa is less interesting imo and too middle of the road for me.

other than that it's always Mr Brightside, Wonderwall, Africa, Bohemian Rhapsody et al holding up well.

It's a bit depressing that it's the same old retro songs doing best every week on Spotify sad.gif
