I know this show has been going on for the past two seasons but it’s pretty amazing.

It started off as a giant convention to highlight some of the best professional dancers in the business and it’s developed into its own show. The judging panel consists of Ne-Yo, Jennifer Lopez & Derek Hough (aka the main reason why I started watching this). Season 3 is presented by Access correspondent Scott Evans. The dancers compete in four categories (junior solo, junior group, upper solo, upper group), and in the end, one act will walk away with 1,000,000 US dollars.

I’m probably gonna liveblog this but i’ll post playlists of the dances with them smile.gif

WORLD OF DANCE SEASON 3 | WEEK 1 QUALIFIERS

Gonna be highlighting the acts who auditioned for the show and hopefully you guys willlike them. Enjoy.

To explain the scoring system, the judges lock in their scores and the acts need an average of 85 points to move though to the duel rounds.

-

THE KINGS | MUMBAI, INDIA | UPPER TEAM | HIP HOP

They’re a giant dance crew who got their start winning India’s Got Faleng. As I expected from their package, they specialize in death-defying stunts combined with the usual choreography. It’s pretty interesting to see how in sync they are, and their stunts are so clean. It’s like parkour over here.

The judges are for the most part stunned. Ne-Yo thought they defied gravity, and J Lo commends their trust.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 97 | 98 | 98 -> 97.7 - Qualified

J Lo tells them to keep the shoe. rotf.gif

-

ERICA & AIDAN | LOS ANGELES, CA | UPPER | URBAN CONTEMPORARY

Hold up... this guy was in Poreotics?!?! I’m in freaking LOVE with that crew! Apparently they’re fairly new partners - they had only been dancing together for two months. There was a part where they seemed off, but they picked it up, the musicality is off the charts and the lifts were impressive. J Lo noticed the lack of chemistry which came from lack of time dancing with each other. Derek noticed everything I noticed.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 84 | 85 | 85 -> 84.7 - Did Not Qualify

Unfortunately it was Ne-Yo’s score that killed them. It’s a tough road out there, and it was the lack of chemistry that got them.

-

FUNKANOMETRY | VANCOUVER, CA | JUNIOR | HIP HOP

They’re young and... I can’t really tell if they’re related, but you know, Canadians kill it. Their synchronicity is much better than the other duo’s. There’s a nice dissonance between the popping and usual hip-hop choreography, and it’s mesmerizing. The judges lord that the dancing was serious but it didn’t feel that serious at all. There was so much comedy and characterization laced into the dance and J Lo loved how they stayed in character throughout. Ne-Yo didn’t feel the difficulty was there but the execution more than made up for it.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 88 | 87 | 87 -> 87.3 - Qualified

Weird that Ne-Yo gave the most criticism but scored them the highest.

-

THE CRAZY 8’S | ANAHEIM HILLS, CA | JUNIOR GROUP | CONTEMPORARY

The group is built through sisterhood, especially when it comes to dancer Maia, who has selective mutism, which means she has he ability to talk but anxiety around others causes her not to talk. The group is the one place where she leans on the most other than her family. THIS ONE GIRL GRABS HER LEG INTO A SPLIT AND SPINS ON HER BELLY *.* I’m very impressed with their technique and turnout, and of course the musicality is amazing. The girls say that Maia was the main muse for the piece. Derek commended their stability and balance and was glad to see all the dancers dancing in the same level. Ne-Yo thinks they can compete and win at the adult level.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 93 | 95 | 91 -> 93.0 - Qualified

THEY’RE SO PRECIOUS *.* J Lo offers them the biggest hug possible.

-

JONATHAN Y JORGE | ORLANDO, FL/LIMA, PERU | UPPER | SALSA CABARET

They’re a same-gender salsa couple. I’m interested to see how salsa cabaret differs from traditional salsa. It... doesn’t look too different, I think it’s more informal but has the same technique and stuff. I’m very impressed by the level of lifts and the athleticism! They honestly killed that routine. J Lo loved the lifts and technique, but thought the transitions were rocky and the salsa feel wasn’t there. Derek notes changes in the terminology in the ballroom world - instead of applying genders, they note the parts as “follower and leader” because of same-gender couples like them. He then gives a demonstration of the hip action the duo were lacking.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 90 | 87 | 89 -> 88.7 - Qualified

BEAUTIFUL.

-

JULIAN & CHARLIZE | MANALAPAN, NJ/LOS ANGELES, CA | JUNIOR | HIP-HOP

CHARLIZE GLASS!!! *.* Finally, a dancer I know!

What I like about Charlize stylistically is that she notes the dissonance between dancing hard and dancing soft, and it really shows in her musicality. She works with Julian well, and I’m impressed at how in sync they are despite the challenging choreography. Julian notes that the routine was about the ups and downs of a relationship. Ne-Yo noticed some spacing issues but loved the routine as a whole. Derek wants them to be more consistent in their clarity.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 87 | 88 | 86 -> 87.0 - Qualified

-

THE HEIMA | SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA | UPPER TEAM | BREAKING FUSION

There’s one guy who brings his wife over who has stage 4 cervical cancer, and he says that she inspired him to become a better dancer.

Honestly the camera angles aren’t doing the routine justice because there are some really nice angles where only the judges can see the intricate shapes being made. Derek leaps out of his seat because he’s just too excited about the performance. He also loved how the back line created shapes that complimented the floorwork at the center.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 95 | 92 | 94 -> 93.7 - Qualified

That is... probably my favorite routine so far.

-

MINIBOTS | VANCOUVER, CANADA | JUNIOR | POPPING

They’re pretty much here to freak the judges out by dancing like robots. The choreography is amazing and at the same time it’s nothing I haven’t seen before. Ne-Yo felt that there was barely any synchronicity, and J Lo felt that it wasn’t competitive enough for the competition.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 85 | 83 | 82 -> 83.3 - Did Not Qualify

-

POPPIN JOHN | FARMINGTON, NM | UPPER | POPPING

A lot of kids consider him a pioneer of popping as a mainstream dance style, especially after he garnered fame from the early days of YouTube. His popping almost doesn’t feel real, like it’s a hologram of himself glitching but yet he moves across the whole stage with so much ease. J Lo notes that popping had just as much difficulty as tap and it may not seem impressive but his skills far encompass it. Ne-Yo doesn’t feel like it’s competitive enough but he loved it.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 84 | 86 | 86 -> 85.3 - Qualified

Geez, does Ne-Yo underscore every dance? J Lo adds that there needs to be more emotion in the dance.

-

ELLIE & AVA | WOODBURY, MN | JUNIOR | CONTEMPORARY

Straight legs, pointed feet, impeccable technique, and their control/core strength is phenomenal. It puts them at such a huge advantage because they can interpret moves and musicality to a different degree. J Lo commends their synchronized butterfly jumps. Ne-Yo loved how it told a story.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 95 | 89 | 93 -> 92.7 - Qualified

J Lo tells them that they need more danger and intensity in their dancing and it’s something to keep note of in the future.

-

D’ANGELO BROTHERS | SAN CESAREO | UPPER | TAP

Tbh I expected Italian guys to be much hotter tongue.gif They’re from a small town but they’ve been tapping for almost their whole lives.

There’s a part where they’re talking and it almost looks like they’re stomping so much that the floor is indenting. It’s a very simple dance (so Ne-Yo is not gonna like it tongue.gif( but it’s slick. Derek suggests that for a future routine, they do something where they create the beat. Ne-Yo was impressed by the musicality and synchronicity; they didn’t miss a beat.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 87 | 86 | 89 -> 87.3 - Qualified

Derek has TASTE *.*

-

LAUREN YAKIMA | NORTHVILLE, MIN| JUNIOR | CONTEMPORARY

She’s a competition kid; she eats, lives and breathe dance. She wants people to recognize her dancing, and that’s why she signed up for the show.

Almost immediately, we can see the control in her upper body. The acro elements were fantastic and we can clearly see the switch between the fast and slow movements. There’s one part where she leaps as if to keep on spinning, but other than that, it’s probably my favorite performance of the night now.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 97 | 94 | 96 -> 95.7 - Qualified

-

ELEKTRO CREW | GILBERT, AZ | JUNIOR TEAM | HIP HOP

Do they have some connection to Elektrolytes, a dance crew from the same city? There’s one guy on the team went through a nasty divorce where the dad completely disappeared from the picture, and the team really has his back.

Their costumes SCREAM cheerleading squad. They literally have one guy doing the majority of the lifts but their athleticism is there and every single member seems to carry their own weight. It just felt a little... I’ve seen this all before. J Lo wants them to amp up the difficulty, and Ne-Yo agrees.

Scores: [Ne-Yo | J Lo | Derek] 87 | 87 | 85 -> 86.3 - Qualified

BLESS YOU J LO.
