Surprise bitches xx
Hopefully some of y'all are around, I'll be revealing the entries one by one at 7:30, thought it would be fun to do with the descriptions people gave and to give each one a bit of spotlight!
Hyped.
My description wasn’t exactly very interesting tho lmaoooo whoops
Fun! Looking forward to :3
The songs will be revealed in order of running order, of course as decided by Random.org!
Alteria // Me First and the Gimme Gimme Gimmes – Believe
“The song has been given a punk-rock feel, has a male singer.”
First up is Alteria, Brett-Butler’s country with a re-invention of a BRAYFAVE Cher’s Believe is the biggest selling song by a female in the UK and is known for being her own re-invention 30 years into her career, re-vitalising it. Will a twist on a classic be received well here?
Groovy. I don't expect anyone to be surprised by what I've gone for.
Terra Avium // Swingrowers – Mr Sandman
“An electro swing cover of the classic 50s pop song with a new arrangement”
Chez has sent a song that takes us decades back but brings it into the present day! Mr Sandman is probably one of those songs a lot of people know from TV and film, so how will a total shake-up go down??
Oh my god I love this already Chez how random
Aeroche // Notize – Demons II (ft. Fura) [Kant Remix]
“It's a remix of a song that samples another song that was also previously a BJSC entry.”
Lew has decided on a song that is a sample of a cover of a Persephonian BJSC entry! Far less known than the first two songs.
Well my issue with the Cher song is the vocoded vox of the original so hopefully I'll like this version more I guess!
Thought Terra Avium was a Metallica cover for a second
edit: yas I figured out Aeroche's entry from Lew's post in the thread, Fura for justice pls x
Hyped, me and Bray following IRL accompanied with Chinese takeaway shortly, goals x
Ooh I know the original of Chez's song (probably from film / tv as pointed out) so I'm very interested to hear it in electro-swing form haha.
Fljótavík // Tori Amos – Smells Like Teen Spirit
“Piano and vox cover of classic 90s grunge anthem”
Another classic re-imagined, a lot of you may know Tori Amos and she’s brought her usual spell-binding style to something that EVERYONE will know and most of us love.
Yay, hyped for this! Watching Australian Survivor atm, but will keep checking the thread!
Persephonia // Black Banshee – Teen Pregnancy
“Instrumental is a mashup of samples/remixes of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's 'The Message' and Boards Of Canada's 'Sunshine Recorder', vocals are sampled from an episode of Degrassi. The video I linked is also an edit of a Simpsons episode (it's just a Simpsonwave meme video but it contains the entire song and it fits well so I'm sending that instead of the audio link x)”
Well Bray said it all x Very different to what’s been revealed so far, I am aware of Simpsonswave, the wonder of the breadth of weird stuff on the internet eh?
Little known fact,Believe by Cher contains a sample from an ELO song called 'Prologue' from 1981.
Cadelicia // CUT_ - Papaoutai
“English translation”
Oliver’s gone for an English cover of a previous top 20 BJSC hit by Stromae for Juranabaijan, with different production. Will it do well again in English??
The artist name there should be Blank Banshee x
This is a song I had as a potential for the main contest for over a year but idk if I was ever gonna get around to it so this theme seemed like a good excuse as any, since it's made completely of recycled elements! (Like pretty much the entire vaporwave genre x)
Interested to see how 'Papaoutai' sounds in English!
Omg Bré’s looks intersting
VAPORWAVE
I don’t get why that is a meme
FSR Rontvia // Alex Christensen & The Berlin Orchestra - L'amour Toujours
“The track is an orchestral ballad cover version of a Eurodance classic.”
Rich has gone for an orchestral version of a huge Eurodance hit from the early 00s that never quite made it to the UK. How will this go down with a solid dance fanbase in BJSC who I’m sure are very aware of the original?
Omfg
First one so far where I don't think I know the original but here for orchestral reworkings x
ooh, very j’adore commercial
Ojnoj // Tinchy Stryder ft. Melanie Fiona – Let It Rain (7th Heaven Remix)
“Instead of a mid-slow tempo rnb pop song, it's now a euphoric, mid tempo club banger.”
Jonjo opts for a forgotten top 20 hit lifted into a club track by the ever reliable 7th Heaven, after being vetoed with the Alan Walker mix of This Is Me by Keala Settle, ofc one of the biggest hits of the year.
7th Heaven bangers *.* the original of 'Let It Rain' is decent enough but hoping this remix enhances it a lot.
omg
Jafet king of celebrity family members
Holland-Oates // Weezer – Rainbow Collection (ft. Hayley Williams)
“Look I think this will be veto-ed but it's worth a cheap shot”
Gr8 explanation 😉 The original of this song is from the Muppets, with rock band Weezer re-interpreting it alongside Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams (cue cries of CHEAP!1!1!). The warm heart of the original is kept whilst giving it more a rock edge in places as expected from the artists behind it.
Oh I actually know Ojnoj's :') blast from the past when I used to listen to loads more dance pop
Yeah that's my sister Björt lmao.
adjdhdksb an entire Muppets rock cover album?
Séyetana // Seycara Orchestra – Shelter
“An orchestral version of Porter Robinson & Madeon's 'Shelter', to make it more emotional and uplifting.”
Another one vying for the dance fans to be won over by an orchestra, the original song’s anime video was beautiful I remember.
Some interesting entries so far, looking forward to listening to these.
Oh my god Iz I love you I can’t wait to hear that
Nothing I know so far, some very interesting entries!
Now I am very interested in this Séyetana entry! Could potentially be a fave from the description.
Gah Iz's song is beautiful, very Studio Ghibli
Wow Iz, what a gorgeous track
the weeb jumped out
Aww, this hype, you're making me blush!
Been in love with this version (as well as the original) for ages.
Just got to this thread so scrolled past a lot of others but it looks like there's a lot of interesting stuff, Chez' and Dexton's, and I guess Rich's and Bré's too.
Aesthetica // GIA – Straight Up
“Vocals and production heavily differ from the original version by Paula Abdul. It gives the song a brand new feeling.”
The singer behind Beaverdonia’s BJSC entry Only A Girl returns for Travis’ country, with a blog-poppy atmospheric and darker version of Paula Abdul’s 80s classic.
wasn’t this sent to masquerade last year?
Oh yay Only a Girl girl
Oops momentary pause - there's another that kinda needs to be replaced, been a tough week for me/Phil/Lindsey who were mostly overseeing this so apologies I'll PM both now but lewistgreen/travis are going to have to change (didn't realise the former was a Sugababes sample and they obv have an AF)
Omg scandal
I'll keep going and have PMd both and will just add them at the end
Oh lol Rich submitted first, if you could re-confirm ASAP (through the form or PM doesn't matter really) that'd be fab!
And it's not a "scandal" nbf with what's happened this week I'm sure some of you are aware of, a few entry clashes were the last thing on my mind
It’s okay you guys. Take all the time you need.
Dw Liam it happens, no surprises that we're having some repeats when the spinoff resources thread is about 2 years out of date. Loving this so far!
What happened?
Scandal interval!
Yeah sorry crew, lounge mod chat somewhat took up all of our energy this week with a few delicate situations
Oop x ah well, I'm sure we can iron out these lil clashes quickly. Hopefully the rest of these should be fine
Lmao sorry guys bare with
i even searched for that Gia one KNOWING i'd seen it somewhere before and for the life of me could not find where it was from (even thru buzzjack's search function), so if its masquerade then yes.
as for overload, i knew about that sample but did not make the forum connection!
I knew I recognised but I thought someone had just played it on Plug Buzzjack's search function really isn't the best.
Ok back on it, Lewis decided to pull out as he didn't have a re-confirmation
Aesthetica's replacement...
Obligitary K-Pop bop, sampling En Vogue!
St. Burbia // Astrea – You’re Not Alone
“90s dance banger (by Olive) turned into a fully blown ballad”
V Love Island dumping background music x Ben/Burbe has gone for a lovely ballad version, I was gonna say John Lewis but people use that a bit pejoratively
we love a last place
Oh I think travis' reconfirmation is the first one of these I know so far due to being played on plug before!
Jupiterdonia // MNEK – White Noise (Full Crate + FS Noise Remix)
“It's 1) a cover of Disclosure that's 2) a genre-shift from the original song”
Fresh from his Pride spin-off smash, MNEK is back! Can this cover of a 2013 smash do the business as much as Tongue did?
I know that from the advert, a pretty nice version! (Although Tinchy Stryder's > x)
I love the Olive song so I'll be interested to hear that version.
Aelandor // Bear McCreary – All Along The Watchtower
“Cover of Bob Dylan/ Jimi Hendrix song. Very different instrumentation.”
Jacob takes it back a few decades with a classic cover! Not sure I recognise the original by name.
Just caught up, only know the Olive cover so far, which I briefly considered myself.
Tartford // Emmanuel Seigner – You Think You’re A Man (Yuksek Remix)
“A modern house interpretation of Divine's 1984 hit”
AH Gold brings us biggest hit of one of the most influential drag queens of all time, with a modern twist. The original was a DNQ for New Lexico in the main contest, can this do a bit better (inb4 “it already did it’s in a final” x)?
Land of DW // Groove Coverage – Moonlight Shadow
“The original is Mike Oldfield's classic from 1983 - this one is from 2001, one of the best (dance) re-inventions of the era”
A big classic re-imagined from Frank and I am aware a fave of some participants here (Jade stans iirc), how will an early 00s dance mix go down here?
The original 'Moonlight Shadow' is a masterpiece I think I've heard that version maybe once ages ago so looking forward to being re-introduced to it!
Awwwww Lewis
Bøtanikkä // TEEMID - If You Had My Love (ft. Alva Heidt)
(Addy re-confirming as I got to him in the order, spooky x)
This is a J-Lo classic transformed into deep house banger.
echoing what I said with travis’ entry
Can't say I was much of a fan of the original 'You Think You're A Man' but I don't think it helped that it was potato quality I do like a couple of other songs by Yuksek though so hopefully this should be an improvement. Excited to hear Land of DW's as well, does look a little familiar so I might have heard it a while ago as well.
Aw at Thelonia pulling out D:
The original Moonlight Shadow is another favourite of mine.
Flynnonda // AAA Girls – Heather (ft. Stacey Layne Matthews & Manila Luzon)
“It is a parody/Homage to We Belong Together By Mariah Carey.”
Our dose of Drag Race in this spin-off comes courtesy of Harry from All Stars 2 winner Alaska, Celebrity Big Brother’s Courtney Act and controversial queen Willam, together known as the AAA Girls. This is the only parody in this contest!
Unovia // SLUMBERJACK – Paper Planes (ft. K Flay)
“A more melodic vocal, with string production and some EDM flecks”
My own entry is a cover of a classic 00s track from M.I.A., from two previous BJSC artists! K Flay had a top 10 for Hushkanukia with Can’t Sleep, whilst SLUMBERJACK is behind Fracture, one of my floppier entries. This is from Triple J’s Like A Version and I really love the interpretation of it!
Lotunia // BTS – Fake Love (Rocking Vibe Mix)
“Soo, This is a remix of the song "Fake Love" by the same band. The remix is more influenced by the rock genre - Acoustic(?) guitars, bass and drums. So, a bit different from the original. Also, I know this is a bit cheap - them (BTS) being very popular etc, so if this goes completely against the spirit of the contest i'm fully prepered to change my entry ^^”
NocheLuna said it all – BTS are popular but don’t really have a fanbase on BJ so especially in a spin-off this is fine!
Ooh the original 'Fake Love' is solid so I look forward to a rockier version of it, sounds interesting.
Cor Lupus // Sibewest – The Colour
“Witch House/Neo Trance rework of ICE MC - Take Away The Colour ('95 Reconstruction)”
Again unsure I’ve heard this original so idk what to say that Cody didn’t
Witch house *.* that to go down better than my witchy 27th place smash in the last one of these x
AHSLSJAKDJDHSB SOMEONE SENT BTS MY HEART
'witch house/neo-trance rework' has me iNTRIGUED
Quintessa // Lane 8 – Every Night
“The original was a Motown hit, this samples into into a feelgood dance track about being alone.”
Leonardo brings us another modern dance re-work of a classic, bringing it right into the present day.
LANE 8 OH MY GOD I LOVE THAT SONG I LOVE YOU
Jadakissnia // Tigerstyle - Nachna Onda Nei
“Turns a Michael Jackson classic into a bhangra banger - ENOUGH SAID *.*”
Enough said indeed, I was v intrigued as soon as I saw this description!
Harmonica // Campsite Dream – Dreams
“Original was 90s R&B, this version is dance/tropical house and more uptempo”
A re-working of Gabrielle’s debut! I think I heard this and wasn’t a fan oops but I’ll see if it grows through the course of this.
Yassss *.* my second Britain's Got Talent inspired spinoff entry after 'Temptation' earlier in the year, but connected to a way more relevant act this time (Signature) instead of a random bellydancer both from the same series though, in 2008 *_* anyway, what an absolute tune!
PRoJ // The Beta Band - Squares
"It samples Gunter Kallmann Choir's "Daydream" differently to how I Monster sampled the song in 2001, showing how one sample can be interpreted differently by 2 different bands. This charted, but at number 42. It adds to the song and although uses a sample creates a new track out of it."
Not sure I've heard of this before, excited to hear
Rolloland // Peter Gabriel - Heroes
"No rock instruments,just an orchestra"
Perhaps one of the most famous songs of all time, this version strips it down and is another orchestral version of a classic here!
Ultraviolenceland // Hannah Grace - Praise You
"WAH"
Lol at "wah", this is another advert ballad version of a dance classic, after Sam got beaten to You're Not Alone!
I recognise the title of Jadakissnia's from poring over 2008 charts (a UK #62 hit, cheeeeeaaaaap!!1) but don't think I have heard it! (I didn't watch BGT at all until 2009).
Harmonica bringing Gabbiel impakt x
République d'Áskorza // Starley - Touch Me
"It is sort of a cover of Groove Theory - Tell Me with some updated lyrics"
Starley has been entered with Call On Me which became a UK hit, and here she is again for AShton!
oh that's quite a bop
South Danaelanda // Patrick Topping - Be Sharp Say Nowt
"Samples 'I Know I've Been Changed' by LaShun Pace turning it from gospel song to tech house anthem"
Vaguley heard of this but never listened so now I can!
DAN YES OMFG YESSS
Cowtermont // Abacus ft. Cimone Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime (I Need Your Loving)
"Drum n Bass remake of The Korgis - Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime"
A song I've heard many covers of if it's what I'm thinking of, here's another to add to it!
The Korgis original is wonderful. I hope I'm going to like a drum n bass version.
Hushkanukia // Unicq Mercy
A French BOP that samples Diana King's 90s hit Shy Guy, our penultimate entry.
Skall // Utada Hikaru - Final Distance (M-Flo version)
"Energetic, ahead-of-its-time dance remix that's at double the tempo of the original pop ballad."
All I can say is a big fat YAS and hype to this, QUEEN
--------
There we go, voting thread will go up soon and apologies again for the hiccups
Thanks for this Liam, quite a few here in the end where I don't think I know the originals at all (although I suspect that might be the case for other people with my song too tbf) but looks like a good variety of different spins on the 'reinvention' concept ~
yeah thanks for doing this Liam! Quite a few songs here I really wanna hear, and a few I already love
Ooh I missed all this, oh well, my entry for this I was gonna enter to the main contest but was a bit afraid it might have got ignored. It's quite unlike me and fits this contest a lot better so here's hoping it was a good choice!
Looks a good inspired, set of songs for the most part. I LOVE that version of Shelter so wonderful to see Iz enter that I've also heard those versions of Praise You and You're Not Alone on the adverts before, they're fairly nice c
I feel I have heard a few allready (South Dan, Ultraviolenceland of the top off my head) but excited!
HYPE to The AAA Girls <3
Thanks for hyping it Suedey. I hope the younger ones on here will like it.
