Okay so, I have this on repeat as I shop for wooden crates (long story) and think we should give it some proper discussion.
Kylie's first post-cancer single and it was a shock to most people let's be honest. A glam rock tinged single that is very Un-Kylie. It did the job well enough, #1 in Aus and #4 over here.
Have your opinions on it changed? Is it still a bad song in your eyes? One of her best? A good single?
We can assume that no matter what she released would get some buzz and be a safe hit to some extent, maybe a track like The One or the uptempo version of White Diamond would have been bigger. Should they have released the digital and physicals at the same time or was the digital a week eariler release a good thing?

Discuss.

I still think this was a killer single to return with; I adore the whole glam-rock/Goldfrapp-esque thing that's going on, the "I'm in love, woo" hook makes up for what may be perceived as a 'weak' chorus and the video is one of my favourites aesthetically (the Marilyn-esque curls, the black dress and jump suit, the rock band, the confetti and glitter. LOVE heart.gif

In regards to its release, the download-only week one/physical week two thing was the norm back then, following on from when songs could chart only one week before their physicals, so I don't think it would have done much better particularly. Maybe one of the fan faves on the album may have performed better but I think it was nice to see Kylie make a comeback with something that doesn't sound right on paper but manage to pull it off.

I don't know if I'd consider it a mistake, it performed reasonably well but I think she missed a chance to make a GRAND return here. Something like 'Into The Blue' two eras late (and when she'd lost her relevancy by that point) would have been perfect if it had been recorded for this comeback single. It's a strong, balls-out dance-pop banger like people wanted for this comeback, and the lyrics fit perfectly for bravely overcoming something. Imagine!

'2 Hearts', I like it enough but in an 'album track' way, and either way she has disowned this now having admitted in an interview a few months afterwards that she was forced by Parlo to release it and never performs it on tour any more. Who knows, maybe at a different time in her career this would have been a more appropriate thing to lead an album with?

Like Liam said, the one week download before physical was the norm back then but I've always thought the way they handled 'All The Lovers' in the respect of releasing the download about a month before the physical was a massive balls up. I mean, yes it sold well and was her last genuine hurrah chartwise but had they coincided both of them I think she could have been looking at another #1 on her hands.

I still love this song to date. Such a brilliant comeback and one of her most underrated singles ever.

I did like this song at the time, but I do still think that it wasn't a comeback material, and I still agree that "The One" should have been her comeback single. "2 Hearts" is something I rarely go back to anymore and this was where her career started going wrong, it all points back to this. Even though she would still score another major hit with "All The Lovers" a few years later, but that didn't last.

The "X" album needed more time to be worked on, and not rushed by the idiot record company, and then maybe something better could have been used as her comeback single. The song itself is a very decent track, that should have stayed on the album. Especially with other songs such as "Like A Drug", or the one that I already mentioned, or even "White Diamond (Uptempo)" version.

But honestly I'm glad this song did pretty well, and in my opinion it should have been her 8th UK #1, but sadly that didn't happen.

Its a lot more credible than "wow" and in many ways a much better song but I think it was quite different and didn't connect with the general public. Its certainly not representative of X as an album but then again, neither is slow from Body language.

No matter what I think of the song's quality I'm pretty certain that it was a career killer. At the point of her career that she was at when this was released she really needed to be hitting it out of the park with each release and X was an opportunity for a huge album, probably a competitor for Fever in terms of sales. '2 Hearts' was an instant hype killer though and the era simply ceased being a big deal the second it came out. Of course it's not that easy to pinpoint an amazing lead single on X anyway, so you can point some blame at the album as a whole, but 'The One' or 'In My Arms' or even 'Stars' would have been superior - I'm not sure if there are any worse choices than '2 Hearts' beyond 'Nu-Di-Ty'.

I'm pretty confident that if X had been handled properly she'd still be relevant right now and 'Slow' certainly wouldn't be her most recent #1.

It was hardly a career killer, I won't disagree that X as an era could have been much bigger, but not to the scale of Fever. The album sold strongly and the first 3
singles did reasonably well. Aphrodite was a decent selling era too. Her career went on a downward slope post X but I wouldn't put the blame at it and 2 Hearts' door.

As for 2 Hearts, I think it's widely known that it's one of my favourite Kylie songs and one of my all time favourite songs, it's so glam and such a stormer of a song, it packs a punch and is just a delight for me. That being said, I think it was maybe a wrong single to launch her back into the music world, The One or White Diamond screamed "Kylie" and were the kinda thing people wanted, but i admire her for taking the risk, the only one she's really done in the past few years.
X was a hard album to market as it had no set sound, so finding a song to represent the whole thing was a hard task.

I think her relevancy faded out between 'Get Outta My Way' and 'Better Than Today', that's the point in time I attribute it to and I don't think she'd be in a different position now regardless of X's handling.

I don't think the release of 2 hearts can be blamed for Kylie no longer being relevant. There are a number of factors relating to this including her age, lack of radio play and poor management. All the lovers was also a relatively successful single after 2 hearts. In my opinion, 2 hearts was a bit different to her other releases and she took a risk and it didn't quite connect with her core audience. X wasn't a very cohesive album and although it included some great tracks there were also a lot of weak ones. It still sold close to half a million which isn't bad for Kylie.

It's an odd song to call a career killer because it clearly didn't end her career on the spot like most career killers do, but I think it was the song that massively cut short the amount of time she had left before she faded into irrelevance. The fact that X sold 500k obviously meant that the era by itself was not a failure but really I feel that Kylie at that point needed to be hitting it out of the park non-stop if she was gonna keep things going and X doing "pretty well" really wasn't enough. She sold 500k with an unpopular and poorly remembered lead single - it's clear she could have sold so much more with an actual smash. And if she'd performed better with X then there would have been more hype for Aphrodite and it continues from there.

X could have been a huge comeback and I pin it ending up feeling pretty "meh" pretty much entirely on '2 Hearts'. I pin where her career is now mostly on X feeling so "meh". I mean when you're reaching an age where relevance is something you have to constantly struggle to keep, you just don't release a lead single with no youth appeal.

Her career isn't dead though, so calling 2 Hearts a career killer is a pretty moot point.
At this point in her career, it doesn't matter how good the music is or how big X was, radio more than likely won't play her because of her age and the fact that she
is not seen as "cool" by people.
