65) SAGE THE GEMINI - REVERSE

2017 peak: #5

A good year for Sage The Gemini notching up two #5-peakers within a few months. While Now and Later was the more successsful on the official charts, it's Reverse - working within the same sound, but just that bit catchier in my book - that takes the crown on my top 100 countdown of 2017 - even if just by a few places. It's another slice of party hip-hop-R&B done well by the Californian rapper.

64) BEAR'S DEN - BROKEN PARABLE

2017 peak: #7

Bear's Den chart their now-yearly entry, another #7-peaker from their discography since I first came upon them in 2016. I feel like the group are pretty slept on, solid indie rock with a bass vocal from lead singer Andrew Davie not dissimilar to The National's Matt Berninger and notable folk influence. Despite the titles of a lot of their songs, they're not, as far as I've been able to find out, a Christian band. Latest album Red Earth and Pouring Rain (2016) has so far spawned four top tens on my personals, with perhaps a few more to come this year while we wait for them to put anything else out.

63) M0 - NIGHTS WITH YOU

2017 peak: #14

A nice one from M0 now a little lower than she usually peaks out at. The Danish singer has a long history on my charts both throughout the year and year-end countdowns, notching up at least one track every year since I started doing year-ends. This one didn't do so well commercially or with a lot of her fans, but it ticked all the boxes of what I like to hear from her; it was good for me to see her going back to a bit alternative after the family-friendly commercialisation she seemed to jump on with the blonde washout and trend-jumping releases of Kamikaze and Final Song following the success of Lean On. M0 holds the joint-third most number of #1s on my personal charts as of 2017, landing four leaders so far; Lean On, XXX 88 with Diplo, Dear Boy with Avicii, and Slow Love. Excited to see what she'll bring in 2018.

62) MISTERWIVES - COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES

2017 peak: #12

Another new-under-the-radar act now, MisterWives describe themselves as indie pop and flcutuate pretty strongly between both extremes of that description. They're fairly similar to another act I like a lot, The Preatures, and despite being New York natives, seem to have a fair southern influence twang to a few of their tunes. Active since 2015, this one lifts from second album Connect The Dots (2017), and is thus far their only entry on my personals. It's a very catchy, upbeat tune with an addictive hook over a zany, optmistic message - lots of replay value here!

61) CHARLI XCX ft. UFFIE - BABYGIRL

2017 peak: #9

And finally for this segment, the first entry this year for an act who finally in 2017 has connected with me. Charli XCX and I have a long and complicated history, and it's mostly LastFM's fault - back in the day, a long time ago now, Charli's record label must have done a deal with them or something, because just about every third track that came up on the radio feature would be a Charli XCX song from her first album or early releases. It was irritating! and put me completely off her, oversaturation, you couldn't get away. I wasn't particularly impressed by any of her stuff either, and it was during the time when I wasn't really listening to pop either, which was just salt in the wound! After the Afterparty though, released at the end of 2016 warmed me to her, and then her Number 1 Angel EP with its army of fascinating collaborations won me over. This one is almost sickly sweet, but really charming in its own way and somehow a bit edgy. Uffie injects some much-needed oomph in what feels like her first appearance in music in an absolute age, and Charli herself feels more at home on this soundscape than anything she was putting out in 2012. This isn't the last you'll be hearing from her 2017 either - she's got two tracks to come here yet.

Echoing the love for Pouring Light wub.gif Million Bucks was another entry of yours that's a definite keeper for me!

I finally listened to the Marian Hill track and WOW, it's a banger! A shame they didn't try to push this after Down.

Haven't heard that MisterWives track yet, giving it a listen and it's sounding really nice! Quite different from Machine, but then again so was Our Own House so I guess they've mastered a number of genres~

Finally I have a little time to get back into this! It will be belatedly completed but at this rate maybe not until the end of spring! We'll see how it goes, it's fun to revisit some of last year's biggest hits though in any case, and now we're getting to the business end those will be coming thick and fast.

60) LOLO - SHINE

2017 peak: #28

An incredible discovery from Unknown Pleasures (I think) last year brought LOLO back on my radar, I'd known her from indie release Weapon For Saturday back in 2013 or 14 but expected her to be just another name who'd release a few things and then fade away. This was a pleasant surprise, a more feel-good uplifting pop-styled track than I'd usually go for in a contest, but something about this is just very heartwarming, and it's nice to hear a raw, husky vocal on this kind of song. A nice video too celebrating all different kinds of people, which you can always do with more of in the world these days. Despite its low peak this picked up plays steadily through 2017.

59) YOUNGR - MONSTERS

2017 peak: #20

Surprisingly Youngr follows-up an appearance in 2016's year-end chart with another this year. Monsters is much less catchy and addictive than last year's Out of My System (a surefire spotify hit if ever I heard one), but still has a charm to it and had a solid chart run on my personals despite its moderate peak position at #20.

58) BEBE REXHA ft. G-EAZY - F.F.F.

2017 peak: #5

This one caught me by surprise, a solo song from Bebe Rexha that I actually liked! There's shades of Zara Larsson and Pia Mia on this track (let's be honest, Bebe and Pia aren't that far apart anyway) that reunites the blonde with G-Eazy following their 2016 collab Me Myself & I which also landed in my top 10. To date, the two songs are the only ones of Bebe's that I've charted, but this did turn me around on her a little after being a bit of a hater in the past. Girl's got potential.

57) ELSA & EMELIE - CHAINS OF PROMISES (DULSAE REMIX)

2017 peak: #6

A nice genre cross this one, as Dulsae brings a tropical-tinged dance twist to Scandi sisters Elsa & Emelie's original folk-country-lite track. The song brings together a lot of my favourite elements, clear, airy vocal, Scandi production and craftsmanship, and an inventive re-imagining of an original track that's still very radio- and ear-friendly. As yet, neither E&E or Dulsae have landed another charter for me, but I'm on the lookout for more from both. This is another I'd consider as a future BJSC potential for Jupiterdonia if we ever move back out of our current lane.

56) JHENE AIKO - WHILE WE'RE YOUNG

2017 peak: #16

And finally for this section, the return of Jhene Aiko after a year away from my EOY charts as she took a break from music to work on other projects. While We're Young isn't usually the kind of Jhene song I would be the biggest fan of, it's very low, slow, and lowkey, as well as having an overall positive vibe, but it was a strong lead single to get the public invested in her and to see another side of her artistry following what the Omarion song did for her image. While We're Young peaked modestly on my charts in the early summer, and originally wasn't a threat to this top 100 at all, but received a boost after Jhene surprise-dropped her album this autumn, all the way up this far. It's the first - and lowest-peaking - entry in this top 100 you'll be seeing from Ms. Aiko of four, two features and another solo will be making an appearance a little higher up. Much like Lana Del Rey's Love, it's a new direction for Jhene that I wasn't expecting and took me a while to warm to, but once it hits you, this song really takes you on a journey. More to come shortly!

55) WALE ft. MAJOR LAZER, WIZKID & DUA LIPA - MY LOVE

2017 peak: #1

The first of Dua Lipa's three 2017 #1s (I'll let you all guess the other two) bows out just before the top 50. The collab just missed the boat on Dua's star rising, if it was released this summer or this spring I can see it doing much better commercially as Ms Lipa's star power as a Name has gone up so much since the roaring success of New Rules and to a lesser extent, IDGAF. Nevertheless it was a song I was really on board with last year with great tropical summery island vibes. The video is a little low budget and was unfortunately marred by less than perfect weather on shooting day, which also perhaps plays a part in it being not such a summer smash officially.

54) SHURA - WHAT HAPPENED TO US?

2017 peak: #9

I bought Shura's album a little late after its release and so rationed its tracks quite nicely through the year. What Happened To Us was a great early-summer find which ended up becoming Shura's joint highest peaking track on my personals, along with the criminally left off his debut album Love For That with Mura Masa. (Back when he actually had an interesting sound...) No two ways about it, this song's really addictive.

53) THE NAKED AND FAMOUS - LAST FOREVER

2017 peak: #17

One of the dance-rock outfit's three top 20s in 2017 here brings a nice injection of power pop to this countdown. The band were briefly successful two albums ago in the UK with Young Blood, back when indie was still an 'in' sound. Fans of Tonight Alive might hear a similarity here, and I have to say, this album filled an old-Paramore-shaped hole in my musical landscape last year following their most recent reinvention.

52) THE XX - DANGEROUS

2017 peak: #4

I still feel like this would have been the best shout for second single from the album following the lowkey, sibillant On Hold, but what can I do? Dangerous was the first standout to me on album release and landed a peak of #4 while On Hold was still in the charts, XX overload! The group ultimately managed 5 top 20s on my personals from their most recent album including one more chart topper which is yet to come.

51) YO GOTTI ft. NICKI MINAJ - RAKE IT UP

2017 peak: #7

And it's Nicki to close this section just before we get into the top 50, here alongside Yo Gotti on her first appearance of five in this year's countdown, her most successful year since 2015. Rake It Up was her fourth of seven total top ten hits this year and Yo Gotti's only one, to be fair, Nicki really makes the track. This time last year, I was not a Nicki forum mod, but it feels very natural to be one now as I am clearly quite a fan. This is also the most recent of her top tens to make it into the countdown, unfortunately there wasn't enough time left in the year for Calvin collab Skrt On Me, Fergie collab You Already Know or Lil Uzi Vert collab The Way Life Goes to build up the steam to make it this high. Maybe next year!

50) LITTLE MIX - NO MORE SAD SONGS

2017 peak: #4

And we enter the top 50 with Little Mix's highest peaker in my year-ends since Black Magic. I took a long time to really warm to the girls properly - and for them to start making music that really appealed to me - but they did it in spades on their last album. This was the first song from the album that stood out to me and led to it charting within my top 20 in 2016, before re-peaking at #4 on single release in 2017. Having said that, I'm not at all a fan of the single version, MGK is generally irritating and his verse breaks up (for me) the song's chill vibe, not even redeeming it with particularly good flow. Still, this remains a great snapshot of what the girls can do when they actually play their role as the UK's biggest pop girlband and actually embrace wholeheartedly current pop trends. If they won't do that, who will?

49) EMILY ZECK - TWO CENTS (ICE CREAM SONG)

2017 peak: #8

A BJSC potential from last year I never got round to sending up next. Emily Zeck delivers a sweet, compact summer bop here, which followed up on my charts her guest turn earlier in the year on KLYMVX's After Midnight. It's still one I might send to the contest in the future, but it needs a backdrop of warm weather I think.

48) MURA MASA feat. CHARLI XCX - 1 NIGHT

2017 peak: #14

Second spot for Ms XCX here goes to a slow burner that eventually peaked out at #14 during the year. The song's very addictive and catchy and a brave collab choice for both artists, who generally occupy - or perhaps occupied very different ends of the musical spectrum. But be that as it may... it's still a huge step down for me from the kind of thing Mura Masa used to put out before this delve into something a little more chasing the mainstream. I can't help feeling it made it into my top 50 of the year by being boosted up by early curiosity plays.

47) LUIS FONSI feat. DADDY YANKEE - DESPACITO (ORIGINAL VERSION)

2017 peak: #2

Yes, Despacito actually peaked at #2 for me during 2017, making it one of the rare official chart hits to land nearly as high on my personals. (Although a few more are to come a little higher up...) It's the fully Spanish original though. I've never been the biggest fan of Justin Bieber (too old, partly), and the cheap cash-in to boost popularity and seize on a current trend never sat well with me, nor did I think Bieber's English verse and bridge added much to the song as-was. The original has much stronger and authentic Latin flavour which, let's not lie, is one of the song's major selling points.

46) T.O.L.D. - RETURN FOREVER

2017 peak: n/a

An indie track to close off this section, something we haven't had in a while. TOLD - or, The Order of Life and Death and this tune were on my radar for a while, but it only really surged in 2017. It's almost a trip-hop inspired tune with Portishead- or Faithless-inspired sparse production on the verses that becomes almost choral on the, appropriately enough, choruses. Excluding Lana Del Rey tracks, there's only 5 more indie/alternative rock tracks higher than this this year, so it's not done too badly for its genre. It's only when I write that I realise how pop my music taste ended up skewing this year! It's also (I believe) the highest track in the countdown to not have actually charted at all during 2017.

45) BLACKPINK - AS IF IT'S YOUR LAST

2017 peak: #4

Last one before we hit the top 40 of 2017 and it's another girl group to kick us off, k-pop foursome BLACKPINK. It's one of two the girls - Lisa, Jisoo, Jennie and Rosé - have this year in the countdown after just missing inclusion in 2016's. The girls are up and coming as a replacement for the unfortunately controversially-ending 2NE1, YG's previous star girlgroup who featured earlier in the lower end of this countdown with their swansong Goodbye. Head back to page 1 if you want to check that one out wink.gif

44) WHETHAN ft. CHARLI XCX - LOVE GANG

2017 peak: #5

Another Charli XCX one here that scored highly for her during the year as part of her renaissance on my personals. This is also Whethan's debut, recently the young producer's been working with big names like Dua Lipa.

43) TINASHE - FLAME

2017 peak: #2

One I was torn on at first as 2017 Tinashe went full pop. The R&B singer's since disowned the song and heavily implied she was forced into its release and promotion, but at the time it was a new direction for her I didn't completely mind. It's a pretty good wee pop song for what it is, although it's not particularly her style. Her second consecutive #2 for me and her highest charting song on my personals until No Drama came out this year.

42) RITA ORA - ANYWHERE

2017 peak: #1

This one managed to do really well for a year-end release. My longest-running #1 of the year and highest ever charter for Rita Ora, not so bad. A seriously good modern pop song.

41) SIGRID - PLOT TWIST

2017 peak: #34

Another low peak for this one but a steady trickler through the year, Sigrid's best known now for winning the BBC's Sound of 2018 and 2018 single Strangers, but this (and prior single Don't Kill My Vibe) was what started her off on that path last year.

40) UNA HEALY - BATTLELINES

2017 peak: #4

This one was probably one of the biggest surprises for me in 2017. Una Healy, ex- of The Saturdays (a band I was generally underwhelmed at best by the efforts of, contrary to many BuzzJackers)... actually has some pretty decent solo music, releasing a folk-pop-rock album early in the year with some Corrs-esque tunes that really speak to her (and my) Irish roots. Ms Healy landed two top 5s for me in the year, this, and SOS, and while not all of her album is my cup of tea, she's definitely an artist who I'll be watching from now on. If you like this, some other artists I'd recommend that touch on the same kind of sound would include Lisa Hannigan, KT Tunstall, and Joanna Newsom.

39) CHARMING HORSES ft. GRACE GRUNDY - YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE

2017 peak: #28

This is yet another low-peaking track that picked up a lot of slow burn plays throughout the year. This definitely won't be to everyone's taste - a tropical house cover with an airy female vocalist of the classic 90s song by the New Radicals (often misremembered as 'You Got the Music in You'), but it was a track I found slotted well into many playlists towards the end of the summer and through the autumn into winter.

38) LANA DEL REY - COACHELLA (WOODSTOCK IN MY MIND)

2017 peak: #4

Four down already and one more to come after this, Lana's fifth entry in this top 100 countdown. Coachella was the first song from her latest era to really connect with me and give me what I come to Lana for, musings, perspective, and a darkly ponderous view of both introspectively herself and her own history and the world around her, this is also how I myself tend to look at things. Many criticise Lana for being depressing, but for those of us who already are pessimists or realists, her music's a nice reprieve from the incessant HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY in your face positivity of some artists' output. This one sees her speaking more directly about the state of the world and politics, which is a newer topic than the relationships and power dynamics between individuals that she usually goes over in her work.

37) LONDON GRAMMAR - ROOTING FOR YOU

2017 peak: #7

London Grammar's lead single comeback does very well to make it this far into the top 40 after a slightly rocky start. I wasn't at all particularly a fan of the acapella style single video edit of this tune, but the album and single version reinstates a winning arrangement of backup instrumentation to support Hannah Reid's fabulous dark vocals. London Grammar have quickly become one of my favourite British bands since I discovered them in 2015 (yes, late, I know...) and their current album is just as good as their first, no sophomore slump there.

36) HAIM - LITTLE OF YOUR LOVE

2017 peak: #3

The sisters' chart return in 2017 only yields one year-end top 100 entry, but it's a strong one. HAIM have since notched up two chart-toppers for me thus far from Something To Tell You, which progresses their sound a little forward to touch on 90s-esque country crossover and this, which takes a stronger influence from retro pop girlband songs than anything else in their discography and repertoire, and shows they can take a stab at being a pop band as well as indie if they so desire. Their impact in the US seems to've grown this time round with big budget and high impact videos and even choreo, I'm sure the group have a long career still ahead of them.

35) KATY PERRY ft. NICKI MINAJ - SWISH SWISH

2017 peak: #18

Ah...this song. That it made it into my top 40 of 2017 is almost staggering (curiosity plays on first release helped a lot), but here it is - Katy's other two Witness singles are still to come, a bit higher up. I was not impressed with this one on first release, and tbh I still think it's quite a hot mess, even before we get to THAT video! But ultimately, it ended up having a bit of charm to it, tackiness, g-rated 'clapbacks' and terrible execution aside. Both a strength and a weakness of the song overall is the fact that Nicki sounds amazing on the beat, effectively easily outshining Katy on her own record - which, to their credit, the video does draw attention to and parody. A misfire for Katy, ultimately, I still think, but a catchy one that might end up picking up a cult fanbase in years to come.

34) CLEAN BANDIT ft. ZARA LARSSON - SYMPHONY

2017 peak: #8

Larsson ended up having a quiet 2017 after releasing a string of bops the previous two years and seeming well on her way to world domination. This oen reflects that - a slower, symphonic I guess, midtempo balladwith a heartstring-tugging video. Unlike most of BuzzJack, I actually wasn't that convinced by this one, becoming Zara's second-lowest peaking song for me, but it was still replayable enough and not something I'd switch OFF when it came on to make it this far up. It's a decent wee song, but not really Clean Bandit at their best, and I still feel the band haven't been the same since they dropped to being a three-piece.

33) NICKI MINAJ ft. DRAKE + LIL WAYNE - NO FRAUDS

2017 peak: #1

Nicki again, and another #1 drops out. (15 still to come though in the top 30!) This is actually only Nicki's second chart topper for me, following, of all things, Bed of Lies, which had a four-week run at the top in December-January 13-14. (Anaconda wasn't even a top 10!) What a comeback this was though, after a while out of the solo game, Minaj debuted her Queen persona - which will be continued this year with her new album era - in the video, and managed to pack some great bars into what's essentially a single-version Remy Ma diss track. Drake and Wayne round her out as good support acts, picking up a third and first chart topper respectively. Yes, this is one I still go back to a lot, a bop. Nicki has two tracks yet to come including one in the top ten, any guesses what might be around the bend there?

32) FALL OUT BOY - YOUNG AND MENACE

2017 peak: #3

This will be a controversial one. Like Paramore, FOB are one of the former emo bands who've extended their career by genre-shifting - but this switch-up was nowhere near as well-received on BuzzJack, and the internet in general. For me however...I loved it biggrin.gif As someone who never enjoyed their older stuff, this was a really welcome discovery, seeing the band veer into pure electro-rock with even some dubstep-glitch elements, although the peak for that is long past in pop. Unfortunately, they got cold feet and stepped back a litle for the rest of the album, but I'd welcome them stepping down this path again on future releases.

31) LORDE - GREEN LIGHT

2017 peak: #15

And from a BuzzJack divider, we go straight into an all-round fave, which just misses my top 30 of the year. I was really impressed with this one by Lorde though, changing direction (always something I appreciate an artist trying) and even donning a dress in the video! What more do I need to say about Green Light on here? You all know it sees Lorde embracing a slightly more upbeat tune with a euphoric chorus that'll see this staying a staple on her live sets for years to come. Although this actually was her lowest-peaker from Melodrama for me - it was unlucky to be up against strong competition early in the year - it soars above its brethren here to become her highest peaker in this countdown of the whole year. Still don't like it as much as Team, but it's a close second.

Top 30 up next!

30) INFERNAL - HURRICANE

2017 peak: #16

Safe to say Infernal returning over a decade since their commercial peak with a grade A bop was not something I expected at the end of 2016! This was a real find, the cheesy group reinventing themselves into a polished modern edm act and dropping a string of singles over the last two years in their new lane. This one found itself slotting onto a lot of my playlists through the year and also notching up plays through not being the kind of track I'd particularly want to skip, ending up far higher than its moderate chart peak would lend itself to folk expecting. Sadly none of their others since have caught me as much.

29) SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR - WILD FOREVER

2017 peak: #6

Going back even further for this one commercial peak wise, Sophie's not been seen on the official charts singles-wise really since the early noughties. In terms of my personals, she notched up as a featured artist a very long-runner I come back to every summer with Armin Van Buuren in 2011 or 12, but solo-wise, I wasn't expecting much of a comeback. Her latest album however sees her embracing Foxes-esque shimmery indie and produced a few gems, as well as this, Franz Ferdinand-esque Come With Us and upbeat bittersweet midtempo Death of Love are a solid pair of picks.

28) CASHMERE CAT ft. JHENE AIKO - PLZ DON'T GO

2017 peak: #5

The track that launched Jhene's successful run and return in 2017 up next, appearing quite unexpectedly on Cashmere Cat's short debut album preceded by Ariana and Camila collabs. This one's certainly more left-field, but was great to hear Jhene on this kind of edm minimalist beat where she sounds just as at home as on her usual minimalist chill r&b and trap vibes. Aiko still has two more left to come within the top 25 after a successful return to the top of my charts - where she should be!

27) DJ CASSIDY ft. GRACE + LIL YACHTY - HONOR

2017 peak: #1

Another #1 now from an unexpected and unconventional lineup of artists. This one was a slow-burner that clicked for me after its artsy and stylish video dropped over the summer, picking up a nice run of plays. It's also one that seems to be just me it appeals to, it's crashed and burned every time I've dropped it on plug! DJ Cassidy is best known for the in my opinion godawful UK minor chart hit Calling All Hearts with nobody's favourite pair of features, Jessie J and Robin Thicke. Of its time is speaking lightly. The pairing here is no more leftfield mind, a lowkey understated rap from a suited Lil Yachty pairs oddly well with verses and a hook from Grace of You Don't Own Me fame in a sailor uniform and evening gown, as they make their way through a series of colour-coded rooms in an artsy mansion. Bop though.

26) BLACKPINK - PLAYING WITH FIRE

2017 peak: n/a

Last one before the top 25 now, and it's one I've bent the rules for a little, but it picked up so many plays through the year I decided it needs to be included. Hitting the top spot soon after release at the end of 2016, it unfortunately came too late in the year to squeak into the top 100 of that year, but was quite unstoppable through this year even though it didn't rechart, consistently bobbing along the bottom. BLACKPINK are one of, if not the biggest girlband in Sth Korea right now and as a K-Pop girlband on the international scene too, impacting highly on US charts, youtube, and spotify within days of their new releases. New music from them is coming soon, can't wait!

Just one more until into the top 20 now! Swear I will finish this by mid 2018!

25) DAVID GUETTA ft. NICKI MINAJ + LIL WAYNE - LIGHT MY BODY UP

2017 peak: #3

Kicking off the top 25 with a (divisive) bang is David Guetta's latest collab with Nicki Minaj, with Wayne along for the ride too. The trap-influenced edm tune went down like a lead balloon with a lot of fans of both artists, but was absolutely up my street and is still one I come back to, scoring well within Nicki's discography in my book and being a welcome style switch-up from Guetta too - although having said that, since 2017 he seems to've been taking that concept to a logical extreme. Guetta last appeared around this spot in last year's countdown with Zara Larsson collab This One's For You, another divisive effort, if I remember correctly. As for this year, Nicki has one still to come, and, spoilers, it's a top ten.

24) YOUNG SUMMER - ALRIGHT

2017 peak: #10

A pleasing success here for Young Summer who I thought would probably be a one hit wonder when I charted Paused Parade back in spring 2016, a slower tempo piano ballad than I would normally go for with chill lounge elements. Instead, she turned out to be a surprise hitmaker, scoring three additional top tens between then and now, dipping more into the classic indiegirl repertoire for the others. This one ended up picking up a lot of plays throughout 2017 and makes it right into the top 25. Unfortunately she seems to be on hiatus right now after her 2016 EP, but here's hoping she brings us something new this year.

23) SMALLTOWN DJS ft. LISA LOBSINGER - ERASED THE NIGHT

2017 peak: #12

A great 80s esque throwback track from a collab of relative unknowns comes in at #23. With a Stranger Things-like style, throwback dance sound and video featuring same-sex couples of varying ethnicities and unconventionally attractive looks, I would have thought this would be a great BJSC potential, but every time I've played it on plug unfortunately it's gone down like a lead balloon. Still, maybe in the future. It's the first time either artist has charted a track in my top 100, or indeed, at all, neither has landed anything since.

22) JAX JONES ft. DEMI LOVATO + STEFFLON DON - INSTRUCTION

2017 peak: #1

Until very late in the year when it was pushed down a few, this was an on-lock top 20 for me. Blasting straight in at #1 summer 2017 for a run in which it wrestled with the same-week-released Wild Thoughts by Rihanna and DJ Khaled, this was one of the most instant hits for me of the year, between that exciting drum intro, Demi Lovato's swagger and the hook when she drops 'bitch' while obviously thrilled and excited to do so on a song that's seeing the light of day as a single. I'm still surprised that this underperformed a little on the official singles chart, but maybe it's swagger is more one for the gays ™ than one for the general public. Neither Demi, Jax nor Stefflon appeared in my yearly countdowns before this year, although Steff of course also landed Hurtin' Me a bit further down. Twelve more chart toppers are to come, including the aforementioned Wild Thoughts! And of course, much as I like this, I can't let this go without slamming how terrible Demi's choreo is here. Do better sis xo

21) LITTLE BIG TOWN - DON'T DIE YOUNG, DON'T GET OLD

2017 peak: #2

And finally before entering the top 20, one of the two tracks that pushed Instruction out. The country group aren't the first of their genre in the countdown, and this isn't even their first entry in it, but they are the highest peaking with this, fittingly the highest-peaking country track in my charts throughout the year 2017. The midtempo ballad moves more into indie pop territory than the pure country their known for, so of course wasn't released as a single as they need to keep a roof over their heads and (especially US) country fans seem to prefer something safe and well-trodden than something more experimental or crossover. I'm reminded of a modern Fleetwood Mac by this one, particularly the blended male-female vocals and bittersweet subject matter. Perhaps not a genre everyone would associate with me, but definitely a - not even guilty - pleasure of mine now and then. Check it out.

Next up; the top 20! Comments welcome as ever if you have any smile.gif

I really like this! Wasn't sure if anyone else on Buzzjack knew about it!

Also pleased to see appearances from Young Summer and Little Big Town - the latter is indeed a total modern-day Fleetwood Mac!

Someone commented on this! biggrin.gif
Super glad you like this too and Young Summer and Little Big Town! Clearly we don't talk and share tunes enough ohmy.gif

Okay that's motivated me to actually get on and finish it. I did not think when I started this in Jan I would have such an eventful year to keep me away from it mind!

Okay folks, into the top 20 now it's time for the big hitters. Most of the following 20 tracks firmly contended for #1 of the year at some point throughout it, so all of these are definitely within my faves of 2017. (Which already seems so long ago!) Let's kick this thing off.

20) MARTIN GARRIX ft. TROYE SIVAN - THERE FOR YOU

2017 peak: #1

Year-end history:
Troye Sivan - Fools (#50), For Him (#34) (2016)
Martin Garrix - N/A

Debuting straight in at the top spot last June Garrix and Troye racked up a huge amount of plays off the bat in the early summer, battling out for the top spot over 4 weeks with Little Mix's Power (taking it twice, non-consecutively). This became Garrix's second, and second running chart topper for me, and Troye's first, following a run of top 5s from Blue Neighbourhood including Wild, Fools, and For Him. The midtempo pop-house song blends together both artists' previous output masterfully, also containing hints of Owl City and perhaps going on to influence Years & Years - I hear similarities with their current hit single If You're Over Me. Official charts-wise, this squeaked in at the tail end of the top 40 for a week or so. Besides the song, the video is a gem, suggesting in a way to not rock the boat with conservatives that the song actually depicts a relationship between the two guys, instead of them both commiserating over (gasp) a girl.

19) HALSEY ft. LAUREN JAUREGUI - STRANGERS

2017 peak: #6

Year-end history:
Halsey - Closer (#56) (2016)
Lauren Jauregui - N/A

Keeping up the LGBT connection at #19 for the year it's bi-girl anthem Strangers by bi girls Halsey and Lauren Jauregui, formerly of Fifth Harmony. An instant standout from the album and fan favourite, Halsey's team somehow decided the best move would be to not release it until over a year after the album dropped, when it's same-sex anthem-ness thunder had already been stolen by not one, not two, but three other big-name collaborations by bi (or faux-bi) women in the industry. But then. Halsey's campaign in general has been a bit of a mess, so why call out just one aspect of it? This was another June charter that soared straight in to debut and peak at #6, and although it only spent four weeks in my top 40, continued picking up steady plays throughout the year even if not enough to re-chart. It marks Lauren's year-end debut either solo or as part of 5H, who I'm quite vocally unimpressed by generally on the forum, although I did like Worth It and Flex. Halsey previously appeared in 2016 as a feature herself on Closer, but much lower; this is both girls' first visit this high.

Now we're into the top 20, I'm dropping down to two a post for maximum suspense and because I'm doing a bit more text for each entry now. Comments and thoughts, as ever, are gratefully received, it's good to hear from y'all biggrin.gif

Some more. Can you imagine if I actually finished this before 2018!

18) JHENE AIKO ft. TWENTY88 - OLLA (ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE)

2017 peak: #1

Year-end history:
Jhene Aiko - Bed Peace (#54), To Love and Die (#60) (2014), Spotless Mind (#5), Post To Be (#44) (2015)
TWENTY88 - N/A

After not appearing for a year in the top 100 countdown - fair enough, she took most of a year off from releasing anything - Jhene fired back in to my personals in September when she surprise-dropped her second studio album, Beyonce-style, with no prior promo or warning. OLLA may be the latest release of the year left, and it's certainly the latest release to make it this high, all the way into the top 20 of the whole year with only three months to get there. Impressive stuff, but I wouldn't expect any less from Jhene, one of my favourite artists total behind only heavyweights like Lana, Madonna and Kate Bush. Amusingly, this isn't even it for her in the top 20, she has one more to come that's made it into the top ten to add to Spotless Mind's tally of year-ends. OLLA sees Jhene switching up her usual slowtempo R&B sound to a more dynamic, pop and even a bit dance influenced rhythm where she and real-life partner Big Sean sing and rap about the end of the world and being the only people in the world left. Ambitious, and a gem.

17) CALVIN HARRIS ft. FRANK OCEAN + MIGOS - SLIDE

2017 peak: #1

Year-end history:
Calvin Harris - Sweet Nothing (#37) (2014), Pray To God (#3) (2015), This Is What You Came For (#29) (2016)
Frank Ocean - N/A
Migos - N/A

Continuing with a reinvention theme, Calvin's annual charter this year sees him soundshifting away from the pure dance he's made a name for hismelf with to a tropical- and R&B-influenced funk sound, with a host of new and previously-unlikely collaborators. This received a mixed reception on BuzzJack and in the UK/mainstream charts, requiring the dull Katy-Perry-featuring Feels to be rustled up to guarantee the era a longstanding hit and moneymaker, but was immediately up my street as it brougt together two of my favourite genres and two acts I really enjoy on the same song. And Migos. But the less said there the better. Calvin has decent form in year-end charts, landing one in each one I've done (since 2014), while Frank Ocean and the Migos boys make their first appearances this year.
