Over the next few weeks I'll be counting down the top 1000 songs of the decade as determined by a modified version of Polyhex's points system.

((101-Position)/100)+(2.718^(-Position/2))

An explanation of the formula (Polyhex):

QUOTE
( 100 +1 - Position ) / 100 )

This reverses the chart position and divides it by 100 so we don't end up with large points when they're all added together.
Therefore a #1 position in the top 40 get 1 point and a #100 position will get 0.01 points.

( 2.718 ^ ( -Position / 2) )

This adds an extra few points to the top positions so they are weighted more.
--- Therefore a #1 position gets an extra 0.61 points, a #2 gets 0.37, a #10 gets 0.007. After #10 these values become miniscule.

With all the different chart rules and changes in the climate over the years it won't be the perfect representation of the decade but it's the best I can do with what we've got. So let's take a detailed look back through the decade with the 1000 songs that performed the best in the chart.. and because I massively over-prepared I could also post a top 2010 (for the 2010s!) in a great wall of text at the end if there's demand (and if you have any specific requests for individual songs before then ask away).

Firstly here's a few stats.

Peak position breakdown:
#1 Hit - 212
Top 3 - 403
Top 5 - 540
Top 10 - 776
Top 20 - 948
Top 40 - 1000

Most appearances:

Congratulations to Rihanna who has 25 appearances very much helped by her complete dominance of the first half of the decade. Everyone else with 10+ appearances is listed below.

25 - Rihanna
24 - David Guetta
23 - Ed Sheeran
21 - Calvin Harris
19 - Justin Bieber
16 - Drake
15 - Katy Perry
14 - Ariana Grande
14 - Bruno Mars
14 - Chris Brown
14 - Ellie Goulding
14 - Jason Derulo
14 - Nicki Minaj
14 - Tinie Tempah
13 - Little Mix
13 - One Direction
13 - Sam Smith
12 - Rita Ora
11 - Jess Glynne
11 - Pitbull
11 - Taylor Swift
10 - Avicii
10 - Flo Rida
10 - Maroon 5
10 - Olly Murs
10 - Post Malone

Lowest scoring #1s:

The lowest scoring #1 I'm sure you could have guessed is 'I Love Sausage Rolls' by LadBaby. He also has the third-lowest scoring #1 with 'We Built This City'. The bottom three are well outside the top 2010 so I won't be giving them a position.

01 – #0000. LadBaby – I Love Sausage Rolls
02 – #0000. The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir – A Bridge Over You
03 – #0000. LadBaby – We Built This City
04 – #2008. Gareth Malone's All Star Choir – Wake Me Up
05 – #1854. PJ & Duncan – Let's Get Ready To Rhumble
06 – #1750. Justice Collective – He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
07 – #1692. X Factor Finalists 2011 – Wishing On A Star (feat. JLS & One Direction)
08 – #1658. Artists For Grenfell – Bridge Over Troubled Water
09 – #1602. Ellie Goulding – River
10 – #1456. Helping Haiti – Everybody Hurts

Biggest scoring non-top 40s:

The biggest non-top 40 hit of the decade, just missing the cut is 'Bank Account' by 21 Savage (#41 peak) which sits at #1005. The top 10 is listed below (excluding songs that did not go top 40 this decade but were top 40 hits before)

01 – #1005. 21 Savage – Bank Account (#41)
02 – #1013. Demi Lovato – Let It Go (#42)
03 – #1021. Twenty One Pilots – Ride (#47)
04 – #1042. Imagine Dragons – Believer (#42)
05 – #1110. Joel Adams – Please Don't Go (#50)
06 – #1169. Becky Hill & Weiss – I Could Get Used To This (#45)
07 – #1235. Raye – Cigarette (feat. Mabel & Stefflon Don) (#41)
08 – #1236. Hardy Caprio – Unsigned (feat. One Acen) (#45)
09 – #1251. Tory Lanez – Luv (#47)
10 – #1278. Ariana Grande – Love Me Harder (feat. The Weeknd) (#48)

The biggest non-top 50 hit was 'Butterfly Effect' by Travis Scott (#57 peak) which is at #1323. The biggest non-top 75 hit (that I tracked) was 'I'm a Mess' by Bebe Rexha (#77 peak) – it is outside the top 2010.

Finally, the song that just misses out on the top 1000? 'Money In The Grave' by Drake feat. Rick Ross.

Great thread, is there a similar thread for the 00’s I could compare these stats to?

I don't believe so – and this took literally over a year to compile so I won't be making a 00s one. tongue.gif

Interesting pattern, albeit an obvious one, that all the lowest scoring #1 singles of the decade were charity singles.

Really looking forward to this! Although I thought this was originally going to be a top 2010 countdown, how come it's been reduced to 1000?
Very interesting stats in there too, Bank Account and Believer really should have been top 40 hits!

I've decided that it would take me way too long to do commentary for that many songs. tongue.gif

Wow thanks for putting in the effort to compile this Dan!

Great to see 'Love Me Harder' scraping into that biggest scoring non-top 40 hits top 10. Its longevity slightly makes up for the fact that it peaked so much lower here than in the US, where it was a top 10 hit. That era produced 4 top 10 hits (if you include 'Bang Bang') both here and across the pond nevertheless - 'One Last Time' of course eventually peaked at #2 here but had to settle for #13 in the United States. 'Love Me Harder' is my favourite single from 'My Everything', a shame it was released before The Weeknd blew up here as that might've helped it a bit. I feel like both that and 'Dance To This' with Troye suffered from bad timing here!

It says a lot that PJ & Duncan have my favourite song from the flop #1s list by far laugh.gif

'Bank Account' peaking at #41 was super frustrating at the time but a little less so now that 21 has got a top 40 hit to his name since (and with a better song at that). Plus the #1 as a feature of course. Surprised that it comes out as the top non top 40 hit though, I'd definitely have guessed at that being 'Believer' as I remember that being in the top 100 for quite a long time!

Looking forward to this Dan! Shame no non-Top 40 hits made it in but I guess that was expected with how the points system worked.

Looking forward to this. Wonder how Polyhex came up with 2.718 but hey. Intrigued at what the 52 non-Top 20 hits will be, DJ Fresh - Gold Dust could be one of the earlier ones, also if that's just during the decade Mr Brightside would be another.

It's e (Euler's number) - it can be used to model exponential decay such as radioactive decay or, as in this case, the fall off in sales from #1 to #100!

#976-1000

Position / Peak / Weeks / Title / Points

1000 09 13 Angel – Wonderful 9.1849

And so it is Angel who unofficially has the 1000th biggest song of the decade, well done to him I suppose? 'Wonderful' was his biggest solo hit making it to #9 - also becoming the first of three songs he featured on to peak at that position ('T.I.N.A' is #1523 and 'Lights On' is at #1691).

999 27 23 Rihanna – Bitch Better Have My Money 9.1900

Rihanna's first entry is the wonderfully titled 'Bitch Better Have My Money' which helped bridge the gap between eras (which she most definitely hasn't been doing for the last 2 years) which despite what was considered a poor initial chart performance actually stuck around for a good while and is iconic in its own way.

998 11 13 P!nk – A Million Dreams 9.2047

Pink didn't quite have enough entries to make the list in the OP but she still had a great decade, her first entry was recorded for the cover versions album of 'The Greatest Showman' and is the 2nd biggest hit from that project. The original version is still yet to come.

997 03 16 Labrinth – Let The Sunshine 9.2739

Labrinth's first solo hit after having provided hits for Tinie Tempah.

996 03 17 Gym Class Heroes – Stereo Hearts (feat. Adam Levine) 9.2826

Gym Class Heroes briefly returned following a few Travie McCoy solo hits teaming with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine (who has 12 Top 1000 appearances including 2 outside the band).

995 01 19 Rixton – Me & My Broken Heart 9.3474

The first #1 to drop out comes from Rixton who in their short-lived career had just the one big hit which also made it to America. None of their follow-ups make the top 2010.

994 02 14 will.i.am – #thatPOWER (feat. Justin Bieber) 9.3728

will.I.am's team up with Justin Bieber which was quite good actually, aside from its song title, makes it in. It lost out on #1 to a much bigger hit from Rudimental.

993 15 19 Paramore – Still Into You 9.4109

One of the very few songs in this rundown you could consider to be rock came from Paramore whose biggest hit of the decade was 'Still Into You'. 'Hard Times' (#1731) and 'The Only Exception' (#1869) also made the overall chart.

992 04 16 Enrique Iglesias – I'm A Freak (feat. Pitbull) 9.4226

Enrique and Pitbull had two team-ups that made the chart, this was the second... and much worse effort.

991 02 18 The Wanted – Lightning 9.4232

The Wanted had a few #2s during their time... 'Lightning' was one of them and seemingly stuck around a fair bit longer than I remember it doing. They've got 3 more tracks still to come.

990 16 17 Nicki Minaj – Fly (feat. Rihanna) 9.4306

Rihanna teamed up with Nicki on her 'Loud' album, and also had a hit with her on 'Fly'... an underwhelming chart performance considering this was during peak Rihanna season and Nicki was fast becoming big, although it's not the best track they could have come up with.

989 01 13 Alexandra Burke – Start Without You (feat. Laza Morgan) 9.4320

Alexandra Burke's first entry, notable for surprising everyone by actually getting 2 weeks at #1 with 'Start Without You' despite being rubbish (and snubbed by Radio 1)

988 26 19 J Hus – Bouff Daddy 9.4400

A reasonably big post album single for J Hus, which was his second biggest hit.

987 22 18 Kanye West, Jay-Z & Big Sean – Clique 9.4400

This track was taken from Kanye's label's compilation seeing him and Jay back together after their collab album.

986 14 16 Avicii – Addicted To You 9.4524

The first of 10 Avicii entries in the top 1000, the wonderful 'Addicted To You' managed to be his 4th hit from 'True'.

985 02 08 Dua Lipa – Don't Start Now 9.4639

Despite its limited time to rack up points 'Don't Start Now' was an instant big smash and deservedly gets a place here.

984 23 17 Dappy – Oh My (feat. Ay Em) 9.4900

As we celebrate the New Year one of Dappy's hits falls in this section. Despite its missing the top 20 it is actually his 2nd biggest hit. He had more hits than most of you would probably remember; alongside the two songs that are top 1000 'Starship' is #1474, 'My One' at #1580, 'Rockstar' at #1668, 'Good Intentions' at #1768 and 'Motorola' at #1914.

983 11 14 James Arthur – Naked 9.4952

James Arthur's 5th biggest hit was a song no one here asked for about him being naked.

982 01 15 JLS – Love You More 9.4975

One of JLS's dull ballads that effortlessly sailed to #1 during their peak era.

981 06 15 2 Chainz & Wiz Khalifa – We Own It (Fast & Furious) 9.5012

Made for Fast & Furious (as if the title didn't give it away) this gave 2 Chainz his biggest hit as a lead.

980 26 15 Jason Derulo & David Guetta – Goodbye (feat. Nicki Minaj & Willy William) 9.5100

Between the four of them they have over 50 entries, and this is easily the worst of the lot, having given both Jason and David their last hits of the decade.

979 07 18 Labrinth – Jealous 9.5308

One of Labrinth's later hits which very much got used by X Factor around that time too.

978 13 15 Tiλsto vs. Diplo – C'mon (Catch Em By Surprise) (feat. Busta Rhymes) 9.5529

A dance collab between Tiλsto & Diplo which was a big club hit, for its chart push it was then given a Busta Rhymes rap.

977 01 12 Cheryl Cole – Promise This 9.5550

Cheryl's sophomore lead during the peak of her success and X Factor judging.

976 01 16 DVBBS & Borgeous – Tsunami (Jump) (feat. Tinie Tempah) 9.5555

A big club hit the year prior, it was then given a vocal from Tinie Tempah giving it the push it needed to make #1.

Still Into You, Clique, Addicted To You and Tsunami (Jump) are big faves from that section, pleased that all of them managed to get a place in here! I kinda forgot Labrinth's Jealous existed too, that was decent.

And very surprised to see Don't Start Now in here already considering how new it is!

#951-975

Position / Peak / Weeks / Title / Points

975 09 16 Sean Kingston - Party All Night (Sleep All Day) 9.5821

This party track was featured in the Inbetweeners Movie and became the third and final top ten hit for Sean Kingston in 2011, best known for his 2007 chart-topper Beautiful Girls.

974 13 14 Headie One - Both 9.6176

London rapper Headie One used a surprising sample from Ultra Natι’s 1997 hit Free on a song that interestingly spent four weeks at its peak position of #13 between September and October 2019. This is Headie One’s highest appearance as 18HUNNA with Dave, despite peaking at number six, only reached #1433.

973 09 22 Ben Howard - Only Love 9.6252

Ben Howard’s only appearance in the top 1000 is with this song that took ages to become a big hit. Initially an album track on his debut album Every Kingdom in 2011, it was pushed as a single in May 2012 and appeared in the top 40 for one week at #37, then his BRITs performance finally took the single into the top ten in 2013.

972 02 14 Alyssa Reid - Alone Again (feat. Jump Smokers) 9.6430

Based on the 1987 classic power ballad Alone by Heart, this version became young Canadian singer Alyssa Reid’s first (and only) hit at the start of 2012.

971 07 15 Steel Banglez - Fashion Week (feat. AJ Tracey & MoStack) 9.6517

This British non-rural collaboration surprised many when it went straight to number seven on its first week to give all three artists their first top ten single in March 2019. This is the only Steel Banglez entry in the top 1000 with Bad falling just short at #1020.

970 18 28 John & Yoko with the Plastic Ono Band - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) 9.6602

The first Christmas song to appear in the top 1000 is this 1970s song originally used as a protest against the Vietnam War before becoming a Christmas classic that was recently covered by John Legend.

969 13 16 Selena Gomez - Back To You 9.6629

Selena Gomez makes her first appearance with summer 2018 single Back To You, which was also on the soundtrack of season 2 (which was nowhere near as good as season 1!) of 13 Reasons Why.

968 06 16 Alexis Jordan - Good Girl 9.6829

Alexis Jordan’s follow-up to Happiness (which is obviously still to come) from her self-titled debut album entered the top ten in February 2011.

967 10 16 Jay-Z - Young Forever (feat. Mr Hudson) 9.6905

Originally appearing in the top 40 in 2009, this song, which samples Alphaville’s Forever Young, had a slow climb before eventually spending a week in the top ten in January 2010.

966 22 17 G-Eazy & Halsey - Him & I 9.7100

This rather nice offering from lovers at the time G-Eazy and Halsey was released in late 2017 before spending the first few months of 2018 in the top 40.

965 08 19 Biffy Clyro - Many Of Horror 9.7184

Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro have impressively grabbed a place in the top 1000 of the decade with this 2010 hit that was covered by X Factor winner Matt Cardle in a version which became that year’s Christmas number one. Biffy Clyro have another entry in the top 2010 as well with Bubbles at #1672.

964 32 19 Y2K & bbno$ - Lalala 9.7200

Despite only peaking at #32 and not reaching the top 40 until September 2019, the breakthrough hit for American producer Y2K and Canadian rapper bbno$ which is best known for its viral intro still makes it into the top 1000 of the decade thanks to its consistency, spending 14 weeks in the top 50.

963 12 15 Jason Derulo - What If 9.7452

Here is the second of 14 appearances for Jason Derulo with the fourth UK hit from his self-titled debut album in 2010.

962 20 28 Imagine Dragons - Thunder 9.7501

They might have just missed out on the top 1000 with Believer at #1042 (and It’s Time at #1088) but fortunately one single from their Evolve album does make it in, and that is their summer 2017 hit Thunder.

961 09 17 Shawn Mendes - If I Can’t Have You 9.7579

Another 2019 hit as the fifth of six top ten singles to date as lead artist for Canadian singer Shawn Mendes holds onto a place here despite having a hard ACR-induced drop of 19-67 in July.

960 16 18 David Guetta - This One’s For You (feat. Zara Larsson) 9.7604

Euro 2016’s official anthem from David Guetta and Zara Larsson, who have both played at more major international football tournaments than Scotland in the 21st century laugh.gif, became a top 20 hit after they performed it at the competition’s opening ceremony in June 2016.

959 13 18 Ariana Grande - Santa Tell Me 9.7630

The first of 14 appearances for American superstar Ariana Grande in the top 1000 is her 2014 Christmas single which matched its peak of #13 last week.

958 16 17 Rihanna - You Da One 9.7705

Here’s another entry for Rihanna and one of four hit singles from her 2011 album Talk That Talk.

957 13 16 Sigrid - Don’t Feel Like Crying 9.7724

The most recent of Norwegian singer and BBC fave Sigrid's two hits, this one from early 2019.

956 05 15 Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down 9.7896

Also from 2019, the polarising second single from her latest album Lover is Taylor Swift’s first of 11 top 1000 entries. It is also the only song from Lover to make it in as ME! is at #1089 and the title track is at #1245.

955 12 14 Jason Derulo - Get Ugly 9.7940

The second Jason Derulo song in this section is this early 2016 hit from his fourth album Everything Is 4.

954 02 17 Calvin Harris - We’ll Be Coming Back (feat. Example) 9.8079

Calvin Harris makes his first of 21 appearances here with this tune featuring Example that spent two weeks at number two in August 2012, becoming the fourth of seven number two singles for Calvin Harris this decade.

953 12 13 Bruno Mars - That’s What I Like 9.8092

Also making his first of many appearances in this countdown is Bruno Mars, who has another 13 hits to come after this 2017 single taken from his 24K Magic album.

952 17 19 Echosmith - Cool Kids 9.8304

Two years after the song was originally released, this became the one and only hit for the American sibling group at the start of 2015.

951 15 15 Clean Bandit - Baby (feat. Marina & Luis Fonsi) 9.8308

Clean Bandit’s most recent hit featuring Marina without the Diamonds and Puerto Rican star Luis Fonsi in 2018 was their first in years to miss the top ten but was fairly big nonetheless. With Primadonna only reaching #1202, this is Marina’s highest entry.

Brilliant for Biffy Clyro to make it in, also for one of the best Christmas songs to start them off here from John & Yoko. Some justice in You Need To Calm Down outdoing 'Spelling Is Fun!' (aka ME!) too.

Surprise! coi will be helping out with commentaries (thanks!) throughout the thread.

A few thoughts from me:

I enjoyed the Inbetweeners movie but that Sean Kingston song never did anything for me, was a bit too generic even by early 10s club banger standards.
'Alone Again' was great although I actually prefer the "US Radio Edit" which doesn't have any rapping.
As I suspected there will be a fair few Christmas songs around, 'Happy Xmas' is certainly a classic anyhow so good to see that in.
'Lalala' is a proper tune and I won't hear otherwise. Great to see that make it in despite its low peak - and I'd say it's my fave of the section (in at least 11 months of the year).
'You Da One' definitely felt like an underperformance at the time but I suppose Rihanna underperforming then still meant having a reasonably big hit. It's far from being one of her best tracks though.
I did enjoy 'This One's For You' but that position feels about right for it, it's not the strongest by either of them.
Same for 'We'll Be Coming Back' - which isn't an absolute essential Calvin tune either.
