Had a busy weekend so couldn't find any time to do one of these, hopefully business as usual this weekend.

It is a real shame about what's come out about Win from Arcade Fire, they're one of my favourite bands and it'll be a real black mark against them going forward (if they can actually continue) sad.gif but they have a fantastic back catalogue of work and Funeral is definitely the best of them, pleased you finally got into it wub.gif My favourite is Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels), but I love Rebellion too and love the rousing nature and lyrics of it. If you're a little unsure about exploring further, I would at least check out Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) from the Suburbs as well, Win doesn't have lead vocals so it's easier to still appreciate as well x

Lots of other great songs here - Doctor Pressure, the Green Day ones and MCR. Haven't heard Say Hello in ages, reminds me of the Now album that soundtracked my summer that year!

I know right? sad.gif I did wonder about the reaction on BuzzJack in general when the news broke, as I know many people are fond of them here, including yourself. Especially thanks to that song of theirs that always did well in ROTD, I think that one was 'Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)' that you mention? If so then I remember giving it a curiosity spin, albeit years ago, so will have to re-listen at some point. Funeral was the very first album I listened to as part of a big countdown of best albums and it was a very impressive start! I'm glad I happened to do that before the news broke, so I did get to experience listening to that without any tainted feelings at least once.

Glad you have quite a few favourites here *.* I also loved that Now album at the time - 'Feel Good Inc' being the ultimate highlight wub.gif and a back-to-back of Crazy Frog - 'Axel F' and Tony Christie - 'Avenues & Alleyways' was quite the duo *_* x

A fantastic selection of songs here! I certainly wasn't disappointed, my favourite song from Green Day's American Idiot album has come up straight after Holiday *.* It's relentless across nine minutes, with all those different sections and changes in tempo - I hadn't noticed the Moonage Daydream similarity in City Of The Damned but can really hear that now! Then there's the defiant "but not this time!", and after that final piano-accompanied verse, the guitar charges back in and it ends as abruptly as it starts.

Hard to follow that for me, but Banquet does it very well - I love the drums and choppy guitar riffs. I'd not considered the Pixies connection, but can see that too - they're a band well worth delving into, with Monkey Gone To Heaven, Debaser, Gigantic and Velouria, to name just a few of my non-'Where Is My Mind?' faves of theirs.

Those two songs were in my top 10 singles of 2005, as were three songs by Arcade Fire, of which Rebellion (Lies) was the top one - I particularly like the lyrical metaphors, pulsing beat, multi-instrumentation and, yes, the handclaps. The other two were Wake Up, and the other track you mentioned, Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) - although like Chez, my favourite song of theirs is the non-single Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - so Funeral has always been close to neck-and-neck with American Idiot as my favourite album of the 2000s. And then The Suburbs looked like it was going to be my favourite album of the 2010s (I saw them live in 2011 too) until Lana pipped them for me right at the end. Of course, what's come to light this year has thrown any endorsement of their output into disarray, which I'm finding quite troubling to be honest, as I've always tried to put art before artist, and their musical imprint will be difficult to erase. As Chez says, there are some tracks with Régine on lead vocals which may get an easier time, but bittersweet is certainly apt.

I really like Doctor Pressure as well - it fuses the two songs so neatly. The Mariah song isn't bad - the idea of a Kidz Bop version though laugh.gif As a group of five songs, these will take some outdoing, but I look forward to what's next!

I always love reading your passionate responses about Green Day! We may not be done yet where they are concerned. biggrin.gif Bowie has been on the brain for me a lot recently after seeing the Moonage Daydream film last month, what a fabulous reference point.

I'm going to add all of those Pixies songs to my big shuffle playlist and give them a whirl as 'Where Is My Mind?' is just incredible and I love Nirvana, who are also inspired by them of course.

Glad it's not just me who thought 'Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)' was a big Funeral highlight! I have a 'song of the day 2022' playlist and that made it on there as I immediately had to listen to it again, and again, and again once my album listen was over. Wow, incredibly high praise for both of those albums ohmy.gif I try to judge on a case-by-case basis but it's a really difficult one, I wasn't sure if I even wanted to include this song here, as posting any kind of glowing praise felt a bit uneasy - but in terms of musical merit that is where it would slot. Bittersweet for sure. On a more positive note... hell yeah Lana *.* I was supposed to see her live in 2020 but unfortunately she had to cancel :'(

Haha, yep I do really enjoy “Push The Button” - it snuck a couple of weeks at #1 after Death Cab For Cutie's “Soul Meets Body” and Ladytron's “Destroy Everything You Touch” so quite an eclectic and different run of #1s there..

Ooft, “Banquet” and “Rebellion (Lies)” were also big favourites for me and personal chart #1s in 2005. The former is one of my favourite Bloc Party singles, like you I find the guitar work/riff and drums on this so compelling and addictive, there is a huge amount of energy there- testament to Matt Tong's excellent skills as drummer for the band. I became a little bit obsessed with them for a time in the 2000s, and I still follow whatever Kele puts out however their output over recent years has unfortunately been rather patchy. If you are going to delve deeper I'd highly recommend the Silent Alarm album- I got my Dad a T-shirt with the lyrics to the entire album on mainly because the album starts with “Like Eating Glass” of which the opening lyrics are 'it's so COLD in this house' and he's from the North and hates putting the heating on, so it literally always was so cold in our house! It's full of great (and equally angry) tracks like the aforementioned opener, “Helicopter” but also bittersweet moments like “This Modern Love”, “So Here We Are” and “Plans”.

The non-album single “Two More Years” is also worth checking out if you don't know it.

What you said about Arcade Fire is sadly how I feel too, I feel conflicted. My friend went to see their recent tour (where Feist cancelled last minute) and he said that the atmosphere felt very different. I feel quite ambivalent about it all really in terms of separating the artist from the art, however “Rebellion (Lies)” is nonetheless a brilliant track that marks the centrepiece for the captivating Funeral album with its life-affirming anthemic, dramatic chorus, exquisite string section and overall rousing spirit - as well as an amazing chord change. It never fails to get me in the feels and it takes me back to when I first heard it, house and dog sitting one summer in a house that had a massive TV, and yeah so every day after walking the dog would switch on MTV2 and kick back..! I also do love the gut punching energy in “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)” and the opener “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” but the whole album is a joy from start to finish.

Good to see Mylo represented too, whatever happened to him? I always felt like he deserved much more but forgot that “Doctor Pressure” was such a big hit. I find it odd that he was the one who came up with sampling and looping Boy Meets Girls' “Waiting for a Star to Fall” and yet it was the Cabin Crew and Sunset Strippers that fought to get Top 10 hits first and “In My Arms” just missed out a few months later at #13. I always enjoyed “Destroy Rock & Roll” too which samples 'Invocation for Judgement Against and Destruction of Rock Music', and has the brilliantly enunciated 'David Boo-ie', and like someone says in the YouTube comments 'for someone who hates rock music, they sure know a lot of 80s rock bands' laugh.gif

That really is an eclectic trio of chart-toppers, I'm so here for it laugh.gif

Oh wow, two more Doctor B #1s?! Very much enjoying the crossover so far *.* my Bloc Party knowledge is very spotty, I think 'Flux' would've been my introduction to them and I've just discovered the odd single here and there and watched a long-form video about them once. I was addicted to Kele's 'Tenderoni' at the time too and do check out new stuff by him as well when it pops up on Release Radar on Spotify. Bloc Party too actually, I quite enjoyed 'The Girls Are Fighting' from this year. Silent Alarm definitely feels like an obvious album for me to check out so I will aim to! I've actually been very slowly working my way through Mercury Prize nominated albums (best discovery so far = Screamadelica) so at the very least I'll eventually get to it through that project laugh.gif That shirt idea is genius! I think I do know 'Helicopter' actually now you mention that one, will definitely revisit.

sad.gif it really sucks. I had wondered what a gig of theirs would feel like nowadays - saw a lot of mentions on social media about people, understandably, wanting to part with their tickets. Also ouch re. Feist - first them and now N-Dubz, I don't expect much crossover between those fans though laugh.gif Those Arcade Fire musical descriptions hit the nail on the head. I was taken aback by the fact that there was 0 skips for me - I don't know why I didn't have more faith, as it's so acclaimed, but still wasn't prepared for that! Gotta love furry friend related nostalgia.

Apparently Mylo's hiatus is explained by some kind of legal issues, interesting. I wasn't aware of that 'Waiting For A Star To Fall' piece of information, ooh ohmy.gif I recognise 'Destroy Rock N Roll' by name somehow but I think the song itself was brand new to me, so thanks for that proper introduction laugh.gif

QUOTE(Popchartfreak @ Nov 14 2022, 12:21 PM) *
Not very familiar with those first 3 tracks, the first 2 didnt chart for me and Arcaded Fire a mere 70, but Mariah and Mylo/Miami both went top 10, the 2nd time for Doctor Beat to boot, and given Mariah hadn't had a top 10 for me since the mid 90s that was quite the comeback! The Green Day song sounds interesting, I'm not sure I even recall hearing it at the time!

Ooh okay, a real mixed bag then! 'Dr Beat' is really following me around at the moment: in this countdown, on PopMaster recently and on Scott Mills' show the other day laugh.gif oh wow, that's fabulous! I am actually quite into late 90s Mariah now and regret not putting 'Honey' or 'Heartbreaker' in these countdowns. I see ohmy.gif I don't remember hearing it in the wild at all at the time, just memories confined to spinning the American Idiot album.

(chart-run: 8-12-19-31-27-28-38-48-49-63-75-75)

We begin today's section with the only single of the five that didn't chart within the top 10. This is the beautiful 'What Else Is There?' by Norwegian duo Röyksopp. I'm pretty sure I first came across this song in remixed form courtesy of Trentemøller. So it was strange to hear the original without the urgent, pounding electronic backing at first. But I soon got used to it and appreciated the more stripped back, yet still rich, execution that Röyksopp were initially going for, too. The meaning behind this song feels very open to interpretation but I think the one that seems to fit best is two lovers who have ended up on different paths. It certainly jumps out at me during the "we cover distance but not together" line at the very least. 'What Else Is There?' is a pretty striking title and the song itself feels haunting no matter what the intention. This is helped by the other-worldly delivery from Swedish singer Karin Dreijer - who people may recognise from The Knife. She detaches from her being as she compares herself to weather types but there is a lot of human emotion here nevertheless. Lines such as "I don't know what more to ask for" and "there's no room where I can go" sound particularly longing. The trip-hop production style compliments her vocal contributions wonderfully too with the strings, electronic beats and whirls of piano coming together to create a touching, fantastical type of back-drop. The music video was a gripping watch too as we are immediately introduced to a floating woman travelling in quite a lonely world of empty houses with dark, stormy landscapes. This part is played by Norwegian model Marianne Schröder but the actual vocalist of the song does make an appearance too, as a woman in Victorian-style attire during the dining scenes. This is the second time that Röyksopp have featured in my countdowns, after 'Eple' showed up in 2003. Unfortunately this will be the last as 'What Else Is There?' was their final ever top 40 hit, coming in at #32 and impressively hanging on for another week after dropping 7 places. It was the third single from their sophomore record The Understanding and nowadays they are eight records deep. They have been particularly prolific this year after releasing a trilogy of Profound Mysteries albums. Profound Mysteries III was released mere weeks ago. Their music still blows me away even now as you can find them killing it in my current personal chart. The aforementioned remixer Trentemøller has scored hits in my own chart as recently as this year too. The Knife decided to call it a day about 8 years ago now after performing their final show at the Iceland Airwaves Festival.

Next we genre-shift over to #24 as Oasis are back once again with a bit of 21st Century rock brilliance! 'The Importance of Being Idle' was released as the second single from the group's sixth album Don't Believe the Truth, following 'Lyla' as the lead. Liam took vocal duties on that one and now it was time to switch over to Noel's. Both of the brothers were still flying high as these singles were back-to-back #1s for Oasis. 'The Importance of Being Idle' is their final chart topper to date out of an impressive 8. It remains to be seen whether the Gallagher's will reconcile and break the internet in the process. But for now, at least we can reminisce over past glories. 'The Importance of Being Idle' must be up there as one of their most memorable 2000s singles. The guitar work makes a very bold entrance and continues to be an important driving force in the song. I appreciate the more subtle playing throughout too that sounds like a dead-ringer for 'Sunny Afternoon' by The Kinks, a song I love oh so much too. I think Noel's vocals pleasingly glide across the instrumentation. He finds the motivation to passionately sing about his own laziness. He said this inspiration came from sitting around the house during the previous summer having no drive. The lyrics cut deeper as they express a lack of interest in soullessly working for monetary gain and instead more of a desire to live life exactly how you want to. He doesn't think there's anything worth working for. As the lyrics dreamily put: I'll be fine as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine. In a demanding world of hustle culture it's a bit of welcome relief to kick back to an anthem that isn't berating laziness. Especially at this time of year as it's just dawned on me that the guitar solo has a bit of a Christmassy layer to it. I have always been quite drawn to the music video too as Rhys Ifans puts in an extremely charming acting performance. The black-and-white video pays tribute to 1960s 'kitchen drama' British films. Ifans takes on the role of an... extravagant funeral director, which sounds like an oxymoron, but works surprisingly well in practice. He even engages in some choreography. The rest of the band make appearances too, with the Gallagher brothers playing the parts of funeral parlour owners and the rest of the group are the lazy workers, complimenting the lyrical themes. I think the whole package is a moment of genius that modernises some retro themes very well, from the psychedelic sounds to the music video inspiration. Their next and final album Dig Out Your Soul may have failed to produce any chart-topping singles but I wish it had, so stay tuned for more from the group here in a few years time.

At #23 we have an indie-rock meets power-pop stomper and a second appearance for the Kaiser Chiefs in 2005! 'I Predict A Riot' is actually a 2004 song but I decided to save it for this year purely because it gained more success upon re-release, so I tend to associate it with 2005. It originally made #22 the previous year but managed a more impressive top 10 showing in 2005, when a double release alongside 'Sink That Ship' achieved a #9 peak this time. It was once again taken from their debut album Employment. This song opens with a slightly eerie first couple of seconds but then kickstarts into some rip-roaring instrumentation, as the guitar work and drumming are electric together. Then, I always find Ricky Wilson's vocal entrance satisfying too with the soft, elongated transfer of instrument to voice. The same vocal style is adopted a couple of other times in the song which I think is a neat little light-and-shade feature. But for the most part the delivery is as dynamic as you'd expect a song called 'I Predict A Riot' to have. The lyrics open up by saying "watching the people get lairy, it's not very pretty I tell thee" which is a nod to their northern roots, in terms of both dialect and context. The inspiration for the song was found from a nightclub called Majestyk, which drummer Nick Hodgson said would often be home to fights between ordinary people and the police, plus drunk club-goers would knock on his car windows at 3am. Basically chaos left, right and centre. It takes that inspiration and turns it into an addictive, adrenaline rush of a song. The "la la la la la la" run up to the chorus is a similar earworm staple as the "na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na" part of the 'Everyday I Love You Less and Less' chorus. It acts as the connecting piece to an absolute anthemic chant of a chorus line. The single also boasts a short instrumental break, some screaming "ahhhhhhh"'s and even organ overdubs thrown in for good measure. It has certainly stood the test of time as one of the band's signature songs. As recently as this year it even popped up in the background of Liz Truss' resignation speech, courtesy of activist Steve Bray. laugh.gif 'I Predict A Riot' has two music videos but the more viewed one on YouTube, that I chose to revisit, is fairly simple and features the band performing to a crowd, which ends up descending into a pillow fight. The Kaiser Chiefs had notched up a few top 10 hits by this point but would have to wait a couple more years for that coveted #1 single.

We have a chart legend with a fabulous comeback at #22. I think 'King Of The Mountain' completely passed me by at the time but upon discovery later on I quickly fell in love with it. Kate Bush had gifted the world her seventh studio album The Red Shoes in 1993, but would not be back with another until 2005. Finally, the time came for Aerial to be released and 'King Of The Mountain' was selected as the lead single. Its #4 peak, almost 30 years into her career, provided Kate with her first taste of the top 10 singles chart since she contributed vocals for Peter Gabriel's 'Don't Give Up' back in 1986. What a triumphant return! The song ponders a world where Elvis Presley is still living out there. This is most explicitly explained in the chorus, where Kate sings: "Elvis, are you out there somewhere? looking like a happy man". The video illustrates these themes too, with many newspaper headlines popping up and Kate even moving alongside Elvis' floating, empty suit - which then ends up flying into the sky. You could say that it's a rather trippy experience. But it's artistic and creative as always. There's also deep more general themes present, about people not being cut out for the life that stardom brings. Kate Bush herself is pretty well known for a reclusive lifestyle. Bush acted as the producer of the song and with it brought along her usual sophisticated, eerie, rich art rock production flair. First and foremost, I love the continuous, mysterious riff throughout. But that's only one layer! You also have reggae-style guitar, ethereal backing vocals, that passionate drumming and other sounds that conjure up an oceanic atmosphere. Of course, Kate takes centre-stage on vocals, I think she sounds noticeably more mature but as expressive and captivating as ever with her lower-register. The whole song is divine and so left-field, I'm amazed that it charted so highly but I guess it was hotly anticipated and Kate has never played it safe despite being a gigantic success - and people always love her for it. Well, The Dreaming album may have needed a bit more time, but still. She was firmly back in people's lives and wouldn't leave it quite so long for her ninth studio album. Now, we're another 17 (!) years on from 'King Of the Mountain' and a whole other generation has opened their door to Kate's talent, thanks to the use of Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) in the hit Netflix show Stranger Things. This means the Aerial era wasn't quite Kate's last hurrah in the top 10 of the U.K. singles chart after all!

Rounding off this section is some fun, upbeat house from one of my favourite discographies in dance music! Basement Jaxx had already notched up enough singles success by 2005 for a Greatest Hits collection, which proved to be a smart move as it topped the chart and was certified 3x platinum. This album in question was a staple in my mum's car growing up and now I am the proud owner of a very fetching vinyl copy, with blue and yellow discs. Oh My Gosh was chosen as the single to launch this era and became Basement Jaxx's final top 10 hit to date, after charting at #8. It features the vocals of Vula Malinga (who was back in the chart as recently as 2019 on the Riton and Oliver Heldens #12 hit 'Turn Me On') and rapping courtesy of Skillah. It's a ditsy and flirtatious single from the electronic duo and leans a bit more into their dance-pop style. Vula adopts a super sweet delivery here - after all she tells us: "forget about the sugar, have a spoonful of me". The production is pretty bouncy throughout and I like the more prominent addition of the plucky guitar later on, which reminds me a bit of their other hit 'Rendez-vu'. The chorus is ludicrously catchy and seems to have spawned a lot of YouTube comments from people saying that it's been stuck in their head for years. The song title must be in the posh exclamations hall of fame alongside 'Goodness Gracious' by Ellie Goulding. The music video takes the playful lyrics and illustrates them in the unexpected venue of a care home. Here, the residents go about their daily lives but also sing about how much they like each other, with cheeky twists and turns. In terms of online accolades, firstly I ran a rate for the Basement Jaxx: The Singles greatest hits collection on here about 3 years ago and 'Oh My Gosh' did pretty well, finishing 3rd behind 'Red Alert' and 'Bingo Bango'. Elsewhere, it was nominated for the Popjustice £20 Music prize but ultimately lost out to the act who has scooped the most of these prizes. This was Girls Aloud and the song in question is 'Wake Me Up'. But has this championed single made the top 20 of my 2005 countdown or been snubbed entirely for the girls? Stay tuned...

No worries about frequency Jade, always worth waiting for! smile.gif I spent all day writing xmas cards when I'd far rather get down to my much-delayed All Time Top 942 (current total). One day I'll find I have a day completely free and blitz a batch. One day...... ohmy.gif

Royksopp went top 20 for me, and I almost always like their stuff, 11 charting tracks in 20 years including chart-topper I Had This Thing in 2015, so I know I like this one - I just havent heard it in 17 years! How time flies!

Idle is Oasis' best record of the decade, and one of the best records of the decade and my number 2 of 2005. I love the late 60's vibe of it, it reminded me a bit of childhood fave Excerpt From A Teenage Opera in parts (Keith West monster hit from 1967 from a musical that never happened).

I Predict a Riot topped my charts, and slotted in as 21st fave of 2005 (and behind another kaiser track) and still a riot played live. They, like Noel and Liam, are still current and fab in my chart of this week, and Royksopp have had 2 chart entries this year. I love it when great acts keep going with quality music!

It was fab having Kate Bush back in 2005, and King hit 3 in my charts and 30th of the year. Again, I've not heard this since 2005 and dont have the album (yet) but she's never bad and usually brilliant. Running Up That Hill has toped my charts in 3 years: 1985, 2012 and 2022! She did a nice one-off with Larry Adler in 1994, covering vintage The Man I Love, and like a lot of her one-offs tends to get missed sadly.

Oh My Gosh is one I dont recall much (it scraped into my chart), but Basement Jaxx were usually good, and Good Luck was utterly brilliant, one of my top 10's of 2004 or 2005 (take your pick, it charted for me both years and topped my chart!) smile.gif

Quality picks....!

Double comment as I am terminally behind on BuzzJack threads and didn't comment on the last section in time whoops (I don't have as much - or as much positive ph34r.gif - to say about it as some of the other commenters here anyway x)

I'm not massively familiar with any of the songs from 28 to 30, given them all a refresher now and the Green Day song is really good (some parts of it are familiar but I'm not sure if I've ever heard the song in full, quite surprising that Top of the Pops allowed them to take up so much airtime with it - thought that honour was reserved for overindulgent Michael Jackson music videos basil.gif - but *.*). Interesting that it was intentionally modelled after 'Bohemian Rhapsody', can definitely tell listening to it with that knowledge! Though a world away sonically from the more recent hit that's garnered a lot of comparisons to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (Travis Scott's 'SICKO MODE') laugh.gif

The guitar riff on the Bloc Party song is great but not sure the song as a whole really connects with me that strongly (I prefer 'Helicopter' from that era), 'Rebellion (Lies)' came out before I was really aware of Arcade Fire's music - my introduction to them was the excellent 'Keep The Car Running' from their sophomore album - and I'm terrible at going back to listen to older music and forming coherent opinions about it, I think I have heard this song once or twice before but it's not really made much of an impression on me to be honest and it still isn't now (although maybe I would have been more open to it growing on me if not for the whole Win Butler scandal, I think sadly the 'Funeral' era has lost its chance for me to ever appreciate it properly sad.gif I am still a fan of at least one song from each of their other albums though).

On a more positive note, 'Doctor Pressure' is an absolute banger, a really seamless mashup which brings the best out of both songs imo, didn't know that it started its life as a third party bootleg, can only hope the official release for it was a little more above board than the 'Miss You' situation kink.gif And 'We Belong Together' has always been one of Mariah's better songs for me, I don't love it but as far as R&B ballads go it is pretty solid, interesting to read the back story about it too.

Today's batch is much better for me, I think 'What Else Is There?' may pip 'Doctor Pressure' as my favourite from 21-30 wub.gif Röyksopp's darker sounding music always delivers such a delicious atmosphere and Karin Dreijer's vocals fit this one perfectly. I forget if I first discovered this from BJSC Re:LOADED (with it being an early Land of Jack entry) or if I knew it before that but either way it has stuck with me pretty well. Shame they stopped getting top 40 hits after this as their music has continued to deliver over the years - was a real delight to see them dropping not one but three new albums this year as I believe they said their 2014 album was going to be their last (it was called 'The Inevitable End' lol) and I was under the impression they'd effectively broken up!

Oasis and Kaiser Chiefs' latest inclusions are both ones I remember well from getting plenty of radio play at the time and both fab as well (random early BuzzJack memory regarding the latter, I remember it re-entered the iTunes chart around the time of the riots in 2011 *_*), Kate Bush's I didn't know at the time but I think I've heard it a couple of times from being played at plug.dj / SyncTube sessions for some reason or other and remember thinking it was great as she reliably is, given myself a refresher listen of it as well just now and indeed it is really good, would have made for a fine last hurrah in the top 10 for her as it was but of course she had something just a little bigger in her future! And 'Oh My Gosh' is another banger to close the section out music.gif indeed a massive earworm. For some reason whenever I am occasionally reminded of 'Car Wash' by Christina Aguilera I instinctively sing the title in my head to the tune of 'Oh My Gosh' so its catchiness even infects other songs basil.gif (they came out around the same time and share a syllable in their title, there is some logic to it shhh).

'I Predict A Riot' an obvious tune there. Good singalong one as well. 'The Importance of Being Idle' is also great too. Up there with some of their best!

Another great set of 5 songs! I didn't recall the Röyksopp song but gave it a play and it sounds good, also closer in sound to their more recent material than the singles from Melody AM which I do remember from the time. The Importance Of Being Idle is, for me, the last truly great Oasis song - when Noel, despite the lyrical theme, still had the drive and creativity to come up with something like this. I'd love for the Gallaghers to reconcile their differences and reform one day - their sales would be a sight to behold - although I fear I'd be disappointed in any new music from them as I haven't been the most enamoured with their solo work, despite the odd song I've liked, especially from Noel early on.

My favourite of this section is I Predict A Riot - such a rousing blast of a song with an anthemic chorus, plus they even got "leodensian" into a Top 10 hit. I saw the Kaiser Chiefs live in 2007 and this was the absolute highlight. King Of The Mountain was a hugely anticipated comeback from Kate Bush - it was a couple of years until I got an iPod and eventually added some of her 70s/80s highlights, but hadn't gone back to this one until it came up in one of the Sunday sessions (the link was Charles' succession as King that week) - it's now her highest charting non-#1(!) but lives up to it. Oh My Gosh is a fun one from Basement Jaxx - I hadn't realised the vocals were from the same Vula as the Riton song.

Looking forward to the top 20, or your EOY for 2022, whichever is next!

Aww thank you for the kind words, John! This month is looking pretty packed so I'm not sure when I'll find the time to do another one of these, but hopefully January at the very latest tongue.gif well done for getting the Christmas card writing done! I wish I was as organised kink.gif Happy to hear that Röyksopp did well in your chart *.* it's crazy to me that 2005 was 17 years ago drama.gif

Ooh very high praise there for 'The Importance of Being Idle' *.* I know the group's heyday was during the 90s, indeed my favourite 'Live Forever' comes from that decade, but they still had some great stuff to come in the 2000s too. I'll need to remind myself of 'Excerpt From A Teenage Opera' as I'll have heard it at least once before during a marathon of #2 singles, but a while ago. Glad to hear that 'I Predict A Riot' is a great live experience as it does seem like it'd have the kind of energy that would lend itself to festivals/gigs perfectly. Oh yes I've caught new Noel and Kaiser Chiefs on Radio 2 a few times now!

Yeah 'King Of The Mountain' does feel quite forgotten in her discography despite being a top 5 hit but definitely well worth a revisit <3 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)' refuses to die on the other hand, deservedly so *.* Basement Jaxx are so consistent for me despite tapping into a few different sounds, in this case more dance-pop. 'Good Luck' is indeed a tune!

Happy to read that this was such a high quality section for you <3

The shade sleep.gif yay for the latest section being more up your street, though! I'm glad this has led you to 'Jesus of Suburbia', it doesn't feel quite as talked about as 'American Idiot', 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' or 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' so makes sense that you weren't so familiar with it. It's certainly an interesting piece of music though a la 'Bohemian Rhapsody' with its lengthy and unusual song structure. Stay tuned for more songs in 2005 that may not be quite as long, but also have an unconventional structure. I think 'SICKO MODE' comparisons with 'Bohemian Rhapsody' may have passed me by laugh.gif but I suppose it does have a pretty memorable structure in its own way!

Poor brave Bloc Party kink.gif I really need to revisit 'Helicopter' as I do remember thinking that was good. With Arcade Fire I'm glad that I did happen to check out Funeral before Win's behaviour came to light, as it's indeed pretty hard to separate the two, especially right now while it's still fresh news. I did think there was better on the album as aforementioned and I imagine you'd think the same, but yeah, can understand if you weren't particularly enthusiastic about finding out the answer to that now.

Yay 'Doctor Pressure' love *.* I think the 'Waiting For A Star To Fall' sampling wars were enough for one year, hopefully no shadiness behind this one indeed laugh.gif glad you like the Mariah song too as I know you're not the biggest fan in general. Ooh I had forgotten that you were such a fan of 'What Else Is There?' until now - I must've known that in the past with it in Re:LOADED. Indeed it is a shame that their singles chart career dried up after that as they are still so great even 17 years on. My knowledge of them is a bit spotty in places so I didn't know that they publicly planned to call it a day in the past ohmy.gif thank goodness that didn't happen as they've now had two personal chart #1s for me just this year!

Oh wow I remember that 'I Predict A Riot' iTunes boost now you mention it, that would've been during my first year of BuzzJack ohmy.gif I definitely recall both that song and 'The Importance of Being Idle' a lot at the time as well, while 'King Of The Mountain' was one I discovered when older - I guess it not being on a Now album didn't help.

Lol I can kind of see why that Gosh/Wash confusion may have occurred laugh.gif Shark Tale providing the earworm soundtrack too.

It's fantastic to see comments like these where people have had a clean sweep of appreciation *.* the pressure for the next section now! laugh.gif I'm happy that you appreciated the Röyksopp song, I love 'Eple' and 'Sparks' from the Melody AM era, but would agree that they're more far-removed from what we'd expect now. If Oasis get back together then all I can say is good luck Ticketmaster kink.gif their non-Oasis work is quite hit-or-miss for me too, I think 'Ballad Of The Mighty I' is my favourite out of both of those discographies though so a bit later than the first era.

Those sentiments about 'I Predict A Riot' are spot on! Great to hear another anecdote about how enjoyable it is live too <3 Ah it's interesting to read about the anticipation for 'King Of The Mountain' as I didn't really know of her yet. I don't really remember my mum playing much of her music around the house until I was a bit older, despite being a big fan. Ooh iPods, it was a couple of years before I got my first one too, MP3 Player ftw in 2005. Thank you for the reminder of why 'King Of The Mountain' was played at those session, of course we had a few regal picks. laugh.gif Wow that is quite the stat considering the classics in her catalogue ohmy.gif ooh well there you go, glad to have been educational there! Such a random chart comeback but a nostalgic voice to hear on the radio again <3

Yay! This is a good question, I'm going to be tight on time for a good few weeks but I should imagine kicking off my EOY will come first. I will get through that in a number of days each night so it won't be too long until I return to this if that does come first.
