Surprised we don't have a topic on this already! It's out in the US today, UK release on Wednesday 17 January cheer.gif

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a movie adaption of the Broadway musical 'Mean Girls' that's based on the original 2004 film. I think the musical element has been dimmed down a bit for the trailer so I know some people didn't realise laugh.gif it looks very good and like a lot of fun so I'm super hyped for it not to mention the perfect casting choice of Reneč Rapp as Regina George wub.gif

I'm excited for Auli'i Cravalho as Janice as well, I'm trying to avoid as many leaks as possible until it's out in the UK (and I've seen it) but I have had a listen to a few of the songs from the Soundtrack which was released today as well and I am impressed so far so I have high hopes!

Tickets booked for Wednesday night to see it (will be wearing pink ofc x), has anyone else seen it today/have plans to at some point?

Okay idk if this has much interest on here but I'm gonna give my review since I seen it last night laugh.gif

I've been so hyped about this because I love Reneč Rapp (ofc) and Mean Girls is one of my all time favourite films (00s Lindsay Lohan could do no wrong) but I was very nervous due to seeing mixed/mostly negative reviews online. I was confident Reneč Rapp would knock it out of the park as Regina, same with Auli'i but I'd seen a lot of criticism of the music, costuming, casting and bits that had been cut etc.

I really really enjoyed it and don't quite understand a lot of the negative comments I've seen. I thought the costuming was fine, I seen no issue with it and it felt like an accurate modern take on the original styling. I thought all the music was fab, especially Regina, Damian and Janice's songs. Damian and Karen were very funny, so was Regina at the end during the spring fling scenes, genuinely laughing out loud at a lot of it laugh.gif

I think the important thing to remember is it's an adaption of an adaption, it's based on the musical so anyone going into it expecting it to be a replica of the 2004 film is going to be disappointed bc that's not what it is or what it was ever going to be, why reinvent the wheel etc? There's a lot of elements from the original film, especially in the dialogue but it still feels current.

My only criticism, and it probably is quite a big one in part was the casting choice of Cady - that role should have gone to a broadway star that had a stronger voice and bigger acting style. Angourie Rice was fine when it came to the acting although it felt a bit like the bare minimum but her singing voice was not suited to a musical, it's not powerful or emotive enough especially when you have Reneč Rapp in the other big singing role. It should have been someone that could keep up with her so it felt like a battle between the two of them as that's such a huge element of the story, it felt pretty lacking there and like a missed opportunity. There wasn't much personality to Angourie's Cady in general whereas Reneč really made Regina her own. I swear I'm being unbiased x

Chris Briney as Aaron Samuels was also a bit of a mis-fire, there was absolutely nothing to that character, they'd have been as well putting a cardboard cut out in his place unsure.gif The way that Chris comes across in interviews is exactly the way he played Aaron, there was very little (if any) differentiation from himself and the character.

I've not seen the Broadway musical beyond some clips online so I can't really say much on songs etc that were cut but I have heard that the song where Regina is introduced is "meet the plastics" and they all have a verse, I'm kinda sad we didn't get a verse from Karen and Gretchen there, especially if that's how it's meant to have been.

Overall it was really good though, it was campy and full of fun so everything I'd hoped it would be and I genuinely can't wait to watch it again kink.gif Regina, Karen, Janice, Damian, Mrs George where all fantastic casting choices.

Fave song is Someone Gets Hurt x

I'm watching this tomorrow, I was v nervous about it being awful but it sounds good and I absolutely *love* Renee Rapp which I think will help a lot. I've seen a lot of criticisms towards Cadys singing and acting, they easily could've got even just a singer who can act for that role, Sabrina Carpenter would've been amazing for example? Or like you say there is plenty of Broadway singers who would've done it justice too!

Sabrina actually played Cady for a little while on Broadway with Reneč as Regina but COVID put those shows to a halt unfortunately sad.gif I definitely agree it could have had a way bigger impact had they marketed it as like a singing rivalry type thing, it would have maybe even converted the anti-musicals crowd if they liked the singer they cast - lots of people will be going to see it for Reneč for example. I actually think they could have even swapped Angourie and Bebe Wood's roles around and it would have worked better
