The outcome of the SPFL's proposal to finish the lower league season may not be known until May.

The 17:00 BST vote passed with only 39 out of 42 teams having responded, with the fate of the resolution resting on one Scottish Championship club.

However, it has emerged under league rules that clubs actually have 28 days to submit an answer, and that Friday's deadline was a requested cut off.

The motion would bring the lower league seasons to an end now.

For the SPFL motion to be passed, it needs nine Premiership clubs, eight in the Championship, and 15 in Leagues One and Two combined to vote in favour. Ten in the top flight have voted for, with seven in the Championship and 16 in the lower leagues doing likewise.

A vote for would also lead to the Premiership being called on the same points per game basis if the SPFL board "determines the games cannot be played".

Scottish football should not expect to hold matches in front of fans "any time soon", says Nicola Sturgeon.

Scotland's First Minister said at her daily briefing she could not put a timescale on when the sport might resume.

No games have been played in Scotland since 13 March and the SPFL have since ended the lower-league seasons.

Uefa has paved the way for the unfinished Scottish Premiership season to be called by outlining reasons for ending leagues including "insurmountable economic problems" or a ban on sports events.

The SPFL board can curtail the top flight after its resolution to end the lower leagues was passed by clubs.

If they were to do so, it would crown Celtic champions and relegate Hearts.

Rangers have - "alongside other clubs" - requested an SPFL general meeting to consider calling an independent inquiry into the league's ballot on ending the lower-league season.

The Ibrox club say the SPFL's investigation into Dundee's belated and decisive yes vote "alarmingly failed to examine wider fundamental issues".

And Rangers claim to have a "dossier of evidence" they will make available.

The SPFL has called an extraordinary general meeting for 12 May after requisitions by Rangers, Hearts and Stranraer.

Rangers have called for an independent inquiry into the ballot on ending the lower-league season.

The Ibrox club have also stated they will produce evidence supporting their stance "well in advance" of a meeting.

Tommy Wright has quit as St Johnstone manager after seven years in charge, saying he "needed a break".

The 56-year-old said the end of this season would have been a "perfect time" to leave, but now felt "appropriate".

Scottish football's reconstruction talks have ended with insufficient support for any plan to reconfigure the leagues.

A 15-strong panel had been set up to look at proposals following the SPFL's ballot to end the season.

But at a meeting of the top-flight sides - plus Dundee United - on Friday, it emerged the majority were against changing the 12-10-10-10 format now.

Rangers interim deputy chairman John Bennett has urged clubs to consider if those in charge of the SPFL can be trusted to lead the game before the vote for an independent inquiry.

The Ibrox club laid out a number of claims against the league in a dossier sent to clubs on Thursday.

The SPFL rebutted the allegations on Friday, with an EGM set for 12 May.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle say they will tell any independent inquiry about "bullying and threats" against them prior to April's SPFL vote to end the lower-league season.

A requisition by Rangers - backed by Hearts and Stranraer - for an inquiry will be put to clubs on Tuesday.

Championship club Inverness claim SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster knew of the alleged behaviour.

The SPFL provided no comment when asked for a response.

Celtic have been confirmed as Scottish champions for the ninth season in a row and Hearts have been relegated after the SPFL ended the season.

The decision was taken at a board meeting on Monday after the 12 clubs agreed at the end of last week that completing the campaign was unfeasible.

Hearts owner Ann Budge has submitted a reconstruction proposal to the SPFL board for three leagues of 14 for the next two seasons.

The document has been circulated to all 42 member clubs and the SPFL board will meet on Wednesday to discuss it.

Budge's plan involves the Premiership splitting after two rounds of fixtures into a top six and bottom eight.

Hearts, relegated when the top flight was curtailed, would avoid demotion if the proposal passed.

The Tynecastle club and Inverness Caledonian Thistle would make up the expanded Premiership.

The Scottish Professional Football League board has confirmed clubs will discuss Ann Budge's league reconstruction proposal.

The Hearts owner proposes a 14-14-14 set-up for the next two seasons to replace the 12-10-10-10 version.

Hearts, relegated when the top flight was curtailed, would avoid demotion if it gains sufficient support.

In a statement, the SPFL said divisional meetings will be held from next Monday to discuss the plan.

The Edinburgh club and Inverness Caledonian Thistle would make up the expanded Premiership.

Championship club Partick Thistle and League One Stranraer were also relegated in the current 12-10-10-10 format when the season was ended by the SPFL amid the coronavirus crisis.

Scottish Championship clubs have voted to play a 27-game season, nine fewer than normal.

The SPFL has received 'yes' votes from eight of the 10 second-tier clubs after they were asked if they could play a shortened season starting behind closed doors.

A provisional date of 17 October has been set for the league to resume.

The Scottish Premiership is still on course to begin on 1 August, but reports that fans might be allowed in stadia from 23 July are inaccurate, says Scotland's clinical director.

There were suggestions supporters could be back to watch the pre-season friendlies next month.

Rangers have strongly backed their players in taking a knee, after defender Connor Goldson called out a "minority" of fans for "disgusting" comments following his show of support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Goldson posted a photo on social media of himself and team-mates kneeling on the pitch before a friendly in Lyon.

Rangers say any fan "unable to support our players" is not welcome at Ibrox.

The club also condemned the racist abuse directed at Alfredo Morelos.

Police are investigating after the Colombia striker was subjected to racial slurs on social media.

Managing director Stewart Robertson said the Morelos abuse "cannot be tolerated and must be condemned by everyone in Scottish football and society as a whole".
