That's actually very good! Especially since it's still a few more months till release, she could rank up some nice pre-orders and hopefully debat well.

Nice to see the single entering the top 40 as well.

I have high hopes for this album what with 9 weeks of pre-orders, lots of formats/bundles and the slight build of momentum that's occurred during the era so far. I for one will be listening to the album and am already anticipating buying it, having never invested in a Mel C album before now!

Duck yeah! She’s doing great. I’m gonna see tomorrow if I can buy some more items to gift my friends. Some bundles are expensive but worth it ❤️

Does Deluxe Book 3LP count towards to the charts as 1 copy?

btw, the book LPs are 1,812 copies left.

Posted by: Jay Something Jul 30 2020, 03:03 AM

I wonder how many copies there were in the first place ohmy.gif I wish I'd thought to check when the pre-order went live! It'll be interesting to track how well those sell. I'll be a bit annoyed if they're eventually reduced in price if she struggles to shift them laugh.gif

Same. That bloody book is too bloody expensive. It better be worth it!

Posted by: Jay Something Jul 30 2020, 10:53 AM

There's now 1,807, so it's not exactly selling fast... eek! Honestly I'm kind of surprised that it's not a particularly limited item... presumably it's a run of 2000 or more. I would have thought somewhere between 500 and 1000 would have been a safer bet for her to be able to sell out an expensive item like that.

Lol I'll keep an eye on the stock levels, if there's still loads left nearer to the time of release then I might consider cancelling.

If you get the book in the bundle it makes it more worth it.

Book plus deluxe cd and cassette comes to £90

Yeah I saw that, you basically get the cassette for free doing it that way... however shipping costs go up for bundles.

iTunes UK

#37 - In And Out Of Love
#326 - I Turn To You
#356 - Blame It On Me
#466 - Who I Am

Melanie is currently #1 on iTunes on pre-order chart in the UK, Australia, Italy, Ireland, Spain and Finland. How satisfying. I know it means nothing whatsoever really but it's nice to see her at #1 on something lol.

Posted by: masahiro Jul 31 2020, 02:34 AM

I know this is silly question, but...
If she did "Cassette + digital download" or something kinda, it counts as 2 copies or 1?
(I just thought I could get digital download from her official store but couldn't tongue.gif)

I wanted to "some apparel + digital album" bundle as well for sales...

Posted by: Jay Something Jul 31 2020, 03:09 AM

I'm not 100% certain about this but I don't tend to notice UK stores doing "physical + download" bundles! US artist stores seem to do that though. Maybe there's a UK chart rule that restricts it.

It wasn't a bundle but Emma's My Happy Place could get 3 songs download from her store,

I can't believe it only sold around 200 copies of the book edition. Only 200 fans around the world have bought it? It should be wrong, I bet more people would buy it. I didn't had any doubt about buying it or not, I bought it immediately. it's expensive, but it's a new album in almost 4 years... she deserves it.

Sorry but a £80 book, in a middle of a pandemic where most people are loosing their incomes on a daily rate? It's a bit of a wild ask, in my opinion. Like, I get why she would do that, but for an artist of her statue who doesnt have a really large audience, it will be a hard sell.

Im sure it will eventually sell out, and she will make a mint out of it, so I wouldnt really worry too much. Selling 200 in the space of a few days, for that price, is probably quite good. She aint no Ariana or Taylor Swift who have millions of fans who would jump at a chance to buy everything they can. We're talking of an average committed fanbase of like 50,000 across the world - it's not exactly going to be a case where everyone within that fanbase will buy it in a heartbeat, specially to those fans whom she and her solo work isn't a priority.

I bought it only because I got a new income stream confirmed this week (thankfully) but otherwise I wouldnt have done it. We have a massive recession about to hit us and I want to keep my savings intact so that I can prepare for that.

The only way I would go into my savings for unessential stuff like this, would be if the Spice Girls as a group released something or launched a new tour. Otherwise, Im keeping my money tightly in my savings account for now happy.gif

Again, I think she will eventually sell it out.

This. And I’m sure many fans will buy or stream the album like they did with VOM. It’s like she has a new vehicle to drive more sales. Let’s see what happens, I’m confident.

The thing Emma had over Mel C was it was her first album in 13 years. It felt a bit of an event and I'm sure a lot of us thought it might never happen so it got a lot of excitement and hype from all sides of the Spice fanbase.

I'm sure if this was Melanie's first album in 13 years it would feel a bigger deal and more special too.

Whilst I agree, I do think that there is much more momentum for this new Mel C album, overall, even within the fanbase. Bunton is my favourite solo, but My Happy Place would have made much better within the Spice fanbase and the general public if it wasnt a covers album with two originals. That really killed much buzz. The only reason I bought it was because it was Emma.

Emma has the backing of a strong record label, which is why promo was robust and she managed to get ok results. Had she been independent, I dont think she would have had much momentum.

This time, it is different with Mel C. She has much better support from the general public and press this time, which makes us feel confident that she might do well. I think she might be able to shift good numbers (for a solo Spice) this time, probably the best in her career for a decade. That doesnt mean it will sell bucketloads, but she might shift over 20k in the UK in the long run...

And lets be honest - if she has record label support like Emma, she would make much better numbers!

For the book item: if you add it to your cart & change the number to 2000, it then changes that number to show how many are in stock! There’s 1,795 now. The only thing that isn’t clear is how many there were in the first place.

This method doesn’t work for the other items though. For instance it let me add 100,000 violet vinyl to the basket laugh.gif

Given how few are selling now I think it is safe to assume it was limited to 2,000 copies.

Oh that’s weird! It makes me wonder whether the amount shown for the book by itself isn’t necessarily how many there actually are, I guess it could just be random.

There’s definitely no problem in regards to bundles - for instance the Vinyl Book/CD/Cassette bundle will definitely count as 3 sales!

When it comes to buying multiples of the same format in the same transaction, I don’t think there’s proof that it would count as just one sale. It possibly stems from fans being cautious. I personally doubt that if you bought 2 or 3 copies of the same CD that it would only register as one sale.

Posted by: Spiceboy Aug 1 2020, 03:16 PM

Well to be on the safe side I’ll be doing separate transactions!!!

I’m buying the HMV vinyl and shipping them for people who are wanting them abroad.

A lot of her sales will come from outside of the UK though.

It’s still early days and I hope that upcoming promo & support from Radio 2 will get these formats selling. I’m a little concerned that she over-egged it by having so many vinyl versions tbh.

Regarding the book format, I think it should have only included the album on vinyl, i.e. not including the 2 additional vinyl (which are completely pointless anyway), and have it priced at £45-£50 instead of £75.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was only 500, she knows surely that the regular cd and some of these formats will be cheaper and easier to get or pick up from HMV, Amazon etc.

Most hard-core fans aren't going to order a singular standard cd, they will go for a bundle. Sales through her site will be her main fanbase, supermarkets, Amazon, hmv's sales will be more casual fans and more likely to just pick up a regular cd. That is why cassettes are always sold through artists webstore as no one but hard-core fans are picking up cassettes from an artist.

Some of Melanie's old singles have had their artworks changed from HQ files into scans of physical copies. How odd?!

For example:

thinking.gif huh.gif This Time single has also been changed to a scan of This Time album cover.

Other odd changes include "(Edited Version)" added to I Want Candy and Carolyna EPs and Stages.

All the Red Girl catalog was re-uploaded to streaming & download services early this year since Melanie changed her digital distributor. I imagine they didn't find the original HQ files of the artworks, so they had to scan them.

Blame It On Me is on 922K streams now, should be getting to a million soon with the album being released this week. Quite bizarre to see the acoustic version is at almost 700K already! That usually does not happen with acoustic versions or remixes.

Here a little Graphic of Melanie's Spotify daily Audience since 2015. i put some writings on it.

^ Excellent to see her Spotify audience has grown quite significantly wub.gif

~~~
In and Out of Love is still B List on Radio 2! That is its 4th week on B List. They've played it 33 times so far.
Interestingly that's more support than they gave to Who I Am, which spent 3 weeks on the B List and achieved 31 plays.
High Heels: B-B-B-out [30 plays]
Who I Am: B-B-B-out [31 plays]
Blame It on Me: A-A-A-A-B-out [72 plays]
In and Out of Love: B-B-B-B... [33 plays]
I'm glad that they've kept In and Out of Love in the playlist during her upcoming album release week. Looking at these stats though, I'm really surprised that they weren't more supportive of Who I Am.
I still fear that it was a bit of a mistake for Melanie to not have her album pre-order going on while she had that A-list exposure with Blame It on Me. She only announced her pre-order 2 weeks after it was dropped from their playlists.
Posted by: vibe Oct 1 2020, 05:59 AM
I don’t think having the album available for more order would have made much difference.
I do think Melanie should have had a single package available for In and out of love tho.
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 1 2020, 07:44 AM
What? How could not having an album up for pre-order when she was top 30 on airplay not make a difference. You saw the airplay made the song linger in the iTunes chart for ages, so people were actively looking it up and downloading it (albeit it small numbers) you don't think any of those looking it up and downloading it might have pre-ordered an album instead?
Melanie fans rushed to buy Blame it on me first day/week so those weeks of it staying in the iTunes chart were obviously casual fans or the general public who she absolutely wants to try and get an album pre-order from.
I didn't think Mariah would be a threat as her last (highly underrated btw) album only did 3k in Week One, but maybe the publicity from her book has helped this? Top 20 is my barometer for success tbh and I'm certain she'll be there.
It would be a pity. The Colour and Light Livestream was amazing, there are some great reviews out there and she put lots of efforts. She deserves a top10, she’d deserve a #1!
Let’s hope she lands in the top20 at least, it would still be an improvement from VOM
It is about what I expected. Unless there is some missing data from her website (can happen but seems unlikely) then 6k and a fight to be top 10 by week end like Emma was is looking likely.
With webstores it doesn't matter when they ship in the UK the webstore just reports the sales to the OCC.
However in the US they stopped that as things like Mariah Carey releasing a vinyl for AIWFCSY that shipped months after Christmas but the webstore had release date of before Christmas and reported the sales for the Christmas chart week to help Mariah get to number 1. So Billboard made the rule the item has to have shipped to count towards the chart.
Posted by: Jay* Oct 3 2020, 11:49 AM
(Sorry to continue something off topic, but Mariah’s CD, 2 cassettes, 7” and 12” all shipped before Christmas! It was just a signed CD that was sent out weeks afterwards)
Relative to last week, 3,254 sales on Saturday is quite high for that position. Midweek #6 on Monday 28th (i.e. 3 days of sales) was 3,333. This indicates that this week is set to be a stronger sales week! I think Monday mids will give a clearer picture.
Here's hoping. She really needs to be as visible as possible.
I also dont get why she never does Jools Holland show.... They are friends and she has toured extensively with him on his own tours and has recorded music with him. Yet, she never gets a performance or interview slot on that show whenever she is promoting/touring...
Also, why not Graham Norton or Jonathan Ross?...
Also pretty decent when you consider Version of Me sold 4,084 across the whole of its first week. As you say, Monday will give a clearer picture - hopefully the promo of The One Show will have boosted it a bit.
A fan on Spice Circle is suggesting 200,791 track streaming on Spotify world wide so far.
No idea if that is any good, but I would assume it isnt that great or how many equivalent of sales that would mean...
Don't forget there are many other streaming platforms. All of them count.
Here's hoping. She really needs to be as visible as possible.
I also dont get why she never does Jools Holland show.... They are friends and she has toured extensively with him on his own tours and has recorded music with him. Yet, she never gets a performance or interview slot on that show whenever she is promoting/touring...
Also, why not Graham Norton or Jonathan Ross?...
Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross are hard slots to get, normally you need to backing of a big record label or film company etc to get on them. Ps Jonathan Ross has been cancelled (thankfully as he was shit), I'd adore a Graham Norton sofa interview and performance though!
Oh I didnt know about Jonathan Ross. He was definitely quite terrible and mysoginistic, so it wont be missed much tbh teresa.gif
Graham is a tricky one. He has a lot of power and influence and he has always been quite horrible to the girls, specially Victoria and Geri. I doubt he would ever have Emma or Mel B there unless they were there as a part of the Spice Girls. Mel C has the best change to go there solo, but the last time she did an interview was during the Spice Girls reunion and obviously she was getting more high standard gigs because of the reunion (and it is not like Graham was any kind at all to the girls during that interview...)..
But I would hope she could get in there at least for a chat. A performance would be amazing of course, but yeah she might need the backing of a record label for that.
Hopefully the Spice Girls do an interview with Graham next year to announce the tour dance.gif
He poked fun at Victoria quite a few times for being a bad singer, but was funny. As for Geri, especially the old ‘You know what I mean’ Geri, I can imagine where this comes from, she wasn’t really the guest of the dreams as she used to not let the other speak.
I hope Mel gets to perform on TV a bit more.
Trust someone like Amanda Holden to release her debut album the week Melanie's albums coming out.
Amanda's album is just covers and she's got the advantage of being on Heart Radio and being on BGT every weekend.
If it hadn't been Amanda it would likely have been someone else and not Melanie sadly. She was supposed to have an Xtra Factor performance and was actually replaced on that at the last minute... nevermind prime time BGT.
It'll very likely be her highest charting album since Reason, which is nothing to sniff at (Beautiful Intentions charted at #24; Version of Me #25). This should end up somewhere in the top 15, top 20 at worst with maybe around 6k sales. It's frustrating since that would've given her an easy top 10 last week (#10 sold 4.5k; #5 6.5k).
Roísín release actually has more streams than Melanie's, and that is what counts in the end dry.gif Amanda's is quite behind on streams though, but she will have the upperhand on sales sick2.gif
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 4 2020, 03:32 PM
Roisin might be unexpected competition her album is ahead of Melanie's on Amazon and iTunes.
Posted by: Mr.X Oct 4 2020, 03:40 PM
Roisin is ICONIC, a gay icon, and she did a performance on Graham last night, so that would bring much more attention. Also, her album is excellent!
Posted by: tommie Oct 4 2020, 03:44 PM
I don't really think Roisin is much of a threat - if she performed on Graham last night, that's why she's currently ahead. She hasn't really had much mainstream radio exposure though, so that peak will be short-lived. I hope she makes the top 40 at least though.
Posted by: Mr.X Oct 4 2020, 04:04 PM
Her album is incredible though and she has a big gay following but yes I doubt it will make much of a dent. If it goes Top20, taht would be excellent news for Roisin!
She won't hit Beautiful Intentions sales (8,970 copies), but she will certainly outpeak it wub.gif
Another titbit of information is that #3 - #7 in Sunday's mids "are separated by less than 600 units".
A lot will depend on if the main increase from Saturday to Sunday (3.3k -> 4.8k) came from delayed shipping numbers or not. Either way, I'd say she might make 7k+ come the end of the week now. Emma was similarily front loaded and still managed to make 6.6k sold with 900 less copies at this point.
I think it'll also depend on if there's any big dispatch increase today - Emma increased 1.1k from Monday to Tuesday, probably because of dispatches being sent from somewhere while she mostly did 300-600 copies sold during the rest of the week. We don't have Emma's Saturday numbers, so we don't know how her numbers looked from Saturday to Sunday.
Today we should at least see if there's any general interest in the album or if she'll end up doing a few hundred copies a day for most of the week.
Hello everyone, I am writing here after many months, I hope you are all well ... I find the Melanie C album fantastic, my expectations, I must admit were not so high ... but, listening to it instead I was struck, there's not a single track to skip, they are all very enjoyable expecially the album tracks in my opinion.
I have always think that The Sea was her best album since Northern Star however I think Melanie C surpassed it.. I hope it all translates into a top 10 peak, it would be really deserved and a huge joy for both Melanie and us fans ... what time is mid-week broadcast today? Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Oct 5 2020, 04:07 PM
Her sales will be higher than Emmas and im not saying that in a competitive way against Emma but the chart position may be the same or lower.
Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Oct 5 2020, 04:18 PM
Amanda Holden will prob overtake her and maybe lana del rey but she should stay ahead of roisin murphy and 21 savage.
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 5 2020, 04:23 PM
Jay can confirm but he did some calculations and she is looking like ending up at 11 by 300 copies. Streaming is getting slowly added in and 3 albums behind her will all do 8k+ when all their predominantly streaming sales are added in. That would put her at 10 then Amanda is 1k behind but closed the gap by 500 yesterday, so by Wednesday but definitely Thursday she will be ahead if all stays as is.
Tomorrow will be more revealing as it will show if anyone's sales are trending up or down.
She could well do over 7k and finish at 11. One really shocking thing is Amanda is doing slightly better on streams than Melanie.
This is all assuming everyone sells the same for the rest of the week as they sold yesterday, there might be unreported sales but no way to know that.
Posted by: schizo_spice Oct 5 2020, 04:28 PM
Number 11 really haunts the Spice Girls doesnt it.
Not to diss this Amanda person and her Stage-ish tunes, but even if Melanie C gets only a Top20, I’m sure Melanie C the Album will have a longer live: more singles, more gigs, more festivals and interest from all around the world.
By the way, that Amanda person is above the Queen in many charts... that says a lot about the world we are living 😂
Posted by: Spiceboy Oct 5 2020, 04:49 PM
Wow was expecting Holden to be top 5 with having the two biggest promo slots of the weekend! Melanie needs to be getting on every single day time show this week, there is only 400 copies between her and #4, while aparaently 1.1k between her and #11. She needs to do anything she can to keep the lead. Quick do some scandalous Geri esque promo stunt!! laugh.gif
The problem is streaming let's break it down...
#7 = Melanie C (5,314 sales)
- physicals = 4,608
- downloads = 563
- streaming = 143
Then you have 3 albums at #10, #11, #13 who all get big streams which will continue to be added through the week:
#10 = 21 Savage and Metro Booming (3,247 sales)
- physicals = 0
- downloads = 67
- streaming = 3,180
#11 = Pop Smoke (2,993 sales)
- physicals = 40
- downloads = 33
- streaming = 2,920
#13 = Bryson Tiller (2,555 sales)
- physicals = 0
- downloads = 117
- streaming = 2,438
Their streams are huge and will continue to be huge giving them a big boost up the charts while Melanie is mainly a physical seller and they won't continue to sell at this rate. I've said it so many times streaming is an utter farce, I mean it allows an album with 0 physical sales to chart wtf? blink.gif
The problem is streaming let's break it down...
#7 = Melanie C (5,314 sales)
And those are only 2 days worth of streaming for those 3 albums as streaming sales are 1 day behind. So they are all looking at 8k+ for the week.
Amanda sold 500 copies more than Melanie yesterday and is 1k behind with 4 days of sales to go and is even doing slightly better on streaming.
What are the chances she is going to overtake Roger Waters / Corey Taylor / BLACKPINK? I imagine the first two are quite front-loaded.
Posted by: dancinqueen Oct 5 2020, 05:50 PM
I think she’s just seen the midweek chart as she finally posted an IG story promoting the album and showing the good reviews. It bothers me that she doesn’t do enough on social media. Roísín has been working her ass off on IG.
By the way, so happy I got these two records ❤️
I'd be surprised if those four albums (Amanda, Pop Smoke and the other two) didn't pass her but is there a chance of her overtaking anyone?
I already have it from iTunes.
How about amazon mp3, HMV etc?
I’m hoping that she does a price reduction for the download and standard CD, but I have a feeling she won’t. Her standard is over £11 on Amazon at the moment, it’s too much to attract casual purchases!
Looks like she'll sell similar amounts to Emma (ie 300-400 a day) with all the pre-order sales gone. Four days left, so she should be safe for over 6.5k, but might struggle to make it to 7k (which would be a nicer figure).
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 6 2020, 12:19 PM
^there is only 3 days left of sales this week.
I can't see her holding onto the top 10. I'd say she is certain for #11 unless there is unreported sales or she has something up her sleeve.
Of course, she's done very well to get her best position since Reason, increased her numbers significantly since her last record and getting good reviews for a former Spice Girl album. A top ten would just be the cherry on top at this point.
Posted by: dancinqueen Oct 6 2020, 03:20 PM
If it’s not top10, I hope it’s not under 15.
That said, I’m quite impressed by the reviews. I’m happy she’s getting some recognition. She doesn’t have enough visibility to reach a wider audience and here the help of a Major would do wonders. Was it Emma last record released indie or?
I truly hope so! I’m a little worried her sales will slow down a little too much in comparison to 21 Savage’s streaming sales. Touch wood she’s done enough to stay ahead of Bryson Tiller too.
I know that 1999 and 2020 charts can’t be meaningfully compared, but regardless, it would still be great if ‘Melanie C’ entered at a higher position that ‘Northern Star’ did (that opened at #10)!
Melanie C sold more than Corey Taylor and Roger Waters above her yesterday. She's 2k ahead of Roisin at #11, and 2.3k ahead of Bryson Tiller who is most likely going to be her competition for a top 10 spot.
Roisin has added a double vinyl bundle today with download - the vinyl is not available until December but the download counts for this week.
The extra signed CD’s Mel put on Amazon have sold out - I wish she would reduce the download to £4.99 tomorrow on iTunes to secure those extra last minute sales.
Posted by: dancinqueen Oct 7 2020, 06:22 PM
Roísín and Melanie already had a chart battle back in 2000 when Never Be The Same Again reached #1 and Moloko #2. I love them both and they follow each other on IG. Roísín also commented with a heart to a post by Melanie. Queens supporting each other.
Back at #10. Love how she’s holding on instead of free falling. The White Album is already a success, Geri stylers paid off.
Glad it's still top 10 on iTunes, hopefully it can keep that up tomorrow too. Currently taking part in the streaming party.
Mel's on track for #8 based on today's midweeks. Pop Smoke should overtake her, but Corey Taylor should fall behind. 21 Savage might overtake too due to streaming but I think everything else is too far behind.
I am slightly worried Lewis Capaldi could be a threat as he has just released some limited editions but hopefully not enough to overtake Mel.
Even with all those new entries she’s holding on at #13.
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 8 2020, 09:12 AM
Some of the things she is doing to sell extra copies are beyond tacky. A Q&A you have to buy a cd to take part in and giving fans on spice circle signed art cards to auction off to buy more cds with.
Just put the regular cd 4.99 on itunes and Amazon.
Fans are being forced to buy a cd though if they want to take part in the Q &A.
Price reductions and different formats are the usual. Giving your fans art cards to auction off to go buy more cds is tacky and the reason not done by Melanie herself is the OCC wouldn't look very kindly on it.
I wish Kylie sold cassettes for 99p! The ones for ‘Golden’ were £8, the ‘Step Back In Time’ ones were £15 and the new ‘Disco’ one is £8 - across all 3 campaigns she is yet to reduce in week 1 to get sales.
Which is fine if this was put up with the album pre-order but was announced Tuesday and only those with a UK address can buy a ticket/cd as they want UK sales.
Pretty much everyone I've seen say they have purchased a ticket/cd already has a cd on spice circle.
Alberto said he put the album on repeat, and those streams would count because 10 different songs are played. I think the 'repeat plays don't count' thing is only if it's one particular song on repeat.
Join her marketing team now!!! I bet none of this happens laugh.gif I mean she is on Sunday Brunch this weekend so that's a good promo slot to keep it up there, a shame Radio 2 have dropped IAOOL, would have been great if they picked up Fearless just to keep exposure of her music out there. Also she didn't do any of the daytime chat shows this week so she should try get on them next week instead, surely she can get This Morning, Lorraine and Loose Woman slots? A Graham Norton slot would be a dream but alas a dream is all it will be. cry.gif
I have to say though considering she is not on a major record label she has had some excellent promotion this week ohmy.gif
I plan on getting the blue HMV vinyl so I'll pick that up next week sometime, so she has 1 sale next week!
I'd also reduce the cassette on her site to £5 as it really hasn't sold well so she could probably do with shifting some of the stock of it.
Tge price reductions would be good to help it next week and defo a good idea to clear out the cassettes.
It seems like Blame It On Me has been her biggest hit this era so far, right? Across all 3 formats, its had almost 2million Spotify streams, which is her best in a loooooong time..
Who I Am has more YouTube streams but ultimately that is due to the adverts as much as the views, whilst Spotify is more genuine engagements with the song.
I find they usually remove a song from the playlist during the week an artist's album is out, from observing the playlist generally.
Fabulous to see her listeners shoot up to over 1.1m!
#80 is quite a bit lower than I expected in Ireland... but I guess quite a few of her fans there would have ordered from Melanie's official store? Maybe those wouldn't count to the Irish chart?
That would make sense as the sales wouldnt have counted to the Irish chart.
Posted by: dancinqueen Oct 9 2020, 03:37 PM
No spoilers, but it seems the trend is good. This time (buy This Time!) she put all efforts in the UK, mostly. I’m sure she’s gonna promote the record around the world whenever allowed and like with VOM she’ll get some top10s in different countries. The album is her best to date and has lots of potential IMO.
I don't understand why they wouldn't have counted towards the Irish chart? All the other sales to other countries do don't they?
Posted by: Jay* Oct 9 2020, 03:49 PM
Each country's chart only counts the sales that are bought within that country. So anyone abroad who ordered 'Melanie C' from her official store, those sales don't actually count towards any chart. I wondered whether Melanie's official store might include Ireland too, but judging by #80, it seems not.
The positions achieved in other country's so far will be from sales made in that country's high street music stores or online stores, so the #27 in Germany will have been sales from sites such as Amazon.de and Saturn.de.
Countries like Belgium, I guess those low positions are mainly a result of a few iTunes sales and streams. If she has many Belgian fans, I assume they'd have ordered physicals from the official store. Therefore they didn't contribute to their own country's chart.
Omg that is so rubbish... and ridiculous! So they are essentially lost sales! ohmy.gif I'm sure quite a few German fans likely ordered copies of the vinyls, cassettes etc not available in other countries which should be contributed to Germany's chart.
I'm so happy for her... and us, the fans *.*
It's been 17 and a half years since Reason reached #5 and became her last Top 10 album. Over the years I never even entertained the idea of Melanie C ever achieving another Top 10 again, particularly when she had three albums in a row miss the Top 40. It seemed beyond her capabilities as an independent artist. So this is really fantastic! wub.gif #8 is a great position; it's nice that she's nicely within the Top 10 and it wasn't a close call at #10.
This is also the first solo Spice Top 10 album since Emma's Free Me in February 2004! 16 and a half years ago!
Kind of funny to think that Beautiful Intentions achieved those sales with just one CD. Times have certainly changed, with all the different formats put on sale these days!
Her first album in four years, Melanie C's self-titled new release now becomes her first Top 10 album in 17, charting at No.8 with 7,265 sales to become her best chart performance since her second solo record Reason reached No.5 in 2003. If you'd told people back in 1996 that members of the Spice Girls would still be enjoying Top 10 records 24 years later, I'm not entirely sure anyone would have believed you.
Interesting to see that Melanie actually overtook Roger Waters in the end (he sold 7,096). I'm a bit infuriated to see that Lewis Capaldi ended up at #7 because of his desire to keep his Top 10 streak up (he sold signed "test pressing" CDs for £5 in a bid to stay Top 10). Melanie could have been #7 without that shenanigans. He sold 7,999, 734 more copies than Melanie. In the Thursday midweeks Melanie had sold 6,381 and Lewis was only on 3,776... zzz.gif
But yes, she does need to change tactics like reducing the prices of physical items and the iTunes ones too... Lets see... I would imagine it would depend on the first midweeks...
She should be doing everything to keep it top 75 this week, because otherwise that top 10 changes nothing. It was still the same old fans buying it just they bought 8 copies not 4 this time. Now she has to get casuals and non fans buying out of curiosity. Oh that new Melanie C album that is doing well is only 4.99 I'll take a punt and buy/download it see what the fuss is about.
Honestly, most of us expects a huge drop this week. It's obvious everything was pushed to at least give it a decent peak and Mel C being able to push this as a top ten album is good enough since most people actually don't follow the charts. The next goal would be trying to achieve a decent sales total, but I doubt that'll happen.
I do think there does seem to be a bit more casual interest in this album than her previous efforts, but obviously she has to keep it going. If it manages to stay top 75 this week it would be a small achievement I guess. Her doing 20k+ in total would be a step up from her previous ones which mostly did between 10-15k in the UK since Beautiful Intentions.
Amazon standard edition £5
A social media advert made with clips from the 3 videos (I'm ignoring Fearless) with the tag 'the brilliant new top 10 album from Melanie C' that she could put on twitter and social media and get her fans to share.
The whole point of being top 10 is it being a vehicle to promote and sell the album to non fans otherwise what is the point. She might as well have had 1 cd again and 1 video and saved her money charted at 30 and spent a fraction of the cash she has.
Like this project is about revenue haha. I mean no record label would have spent out on 4 videos for an album likely to go 8-105-192-Out.
We all like to say it benefitted Emma releasing on a record label but there is no way BMG spent anywhere near what Mel C has on this album. That isn't knocking Mel C, she clearly invested that money from SW19 into her solo career but it is obvious this era isn't about making a profit but getting that top 10, building her profile and self satisfaction.
The issue is that "saving" it would only be worth it if she was the type of artist whose albums charted for weeks. It's always harder to get an album to re-chart once it's left the charts than it is to keep it charting.
Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Oct 10 2020, 01:34 PM
Its def not a money making project and we knew it would be more or less a 1 week wonder album which is the case for any solo spice album. I think the aim was top 10 and profile building and it def done the job there. Mel is very lucky that she has the money to invest in her solo career and its prob one of things that helped make her decision on the spice girls reuniting. Not every artist is in the same financial situation as her.
Not every artist is in the same financial situation as her.
Let's be real here - if Melanie wanted to make money off her solo career she'd be better off signing up to OnlyFans and promising a solo song a month for $25. pirate.gif
Tomorrow is Monday and she’s at #24 on iTunes. I expect her to do something, she has a whole week to lower some prices, release some exclusive content or whatever she wants too. I hope she doesn’t abandon the project.
I have a feeling there’s something Spice related going on and they’re trying to look as much distant as possible. Otherwise, this stinks. The day Melanie got her #8 Emma was promoting the album of a random guy 😂
Mel should do a hot lesbian duet with Geri! And do a special page 3 spread! PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS HERE GUYS!
You do love a conspiracy dont you? Emma did promote Mel's album when it mattered - during the week! She also promoted her other friends' release on the day of its release. Lol its simple
Down to #34 on iTunes let’s see if Sunday Brunch helps at all.
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 11 2020, 12:06 PM
#34 isn't so bad for her on 2nd week. Problem is her sales from her webstore will be non existent this week bar a handful as that is where all big fans order from and they will have got the album first week. This week should be all about itunes, Amazon, streaming and supermarkets, that is where she will pick up casual sales and streams and that is where she needs to be pushing hard right now.
Good its holding up in the downloads, i know it doesnt equate to much but at least a few people are still buying the album, as i said before if she stayed top 75 this week it would be a great bonus.
Posted by: Jay* Oct 11 2020, 04:43 PM
I think she'd need to sell around 1,400 copies to stay Top 75 in week 2. Up to 1,200 copies for Top 100.
I really hope she stays Top 100. It's kind of sad that a second week Top 100 would be quite an achievement in this day and age lol. I miss when albums experienced more graceful falls in the charts (even This Time managed a second week Top 100...), but since streaming became popular it's led to some really harsh falls for albums reliant on pure sales.
Since 2005, the second week positions for solo albums have been...
24-53 - Beautiful Intentions (fell 29 places)
65-75 - Life in Mono (10 places)
57-97 - This Time (40 places)
45-101 - The Sea (56 places)
41-115 - Passion (74 places)
11-121 - My Happy Place (110 places)
25-146 - Version of Me (121 places)
Stages was out of the Top 200 in week 2, meaning it fell over 151 places, and of course L.A. State of Mind didn't even chart in week 1 tearsmile.gif
Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Oct 11 2020, 04:52 PM
Ya i hate the 2nd week fall for the albums but its become so common with so many artists now, i know the chances of top 75 are slim but im staying hopefully it will at least stay top 100. I was sure My Happy Place stayed top 100 on week 2 but i must be thinking of the midweeks.
Posted by: Jay* Oct 11 2020, 05:10 PM
90s queens Emma and Louise both fell 11-121 with their albums unfortunately tearsmile.gif Emma's album was #88 in one of the midweek updates in week 2.
To be honest with you, that has been Mel's career since Reason. She always poured her millions into her career in the hopes that she can recover some of it or all during the promo across the world.
I bet she looses money every time, although she is a multi-millionaire, of course she is fine...
If she wants a better second week, she needs to really promote this week and do reductions of the costs of purchasing the album. In the end, it could actually be a bit more of income as more people would be enticed to purchase.
Unfortunately, no promo, no radio support and no streaminh platforms support, means she is invisible this week...
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 12 2020, 04:10 PM
This week has been pretty shit on her front. She has sold 11 cassettes in the last 4 days, it obviously isn't shifting when they are generally an easy sale. Stick it to 5 quid on her webstore and have her listening to it on a retro Walkman with one of her spice girls outfits on with her saying something like it might be 2020 but I'm still a 90s girl at heart.
Posted by: ___∆___ Oct 12 2020, 04:56 PM
Not just Mel of course but I never understand why artists that so commonly now have a huge 2nd week fall don’t do the reductions etc., as mentioned - surely it’s better to shift the CDs, Cassettes etc., on week 2 at a bit of a reduction to keep it afloat in the charts and prevent a warehouse full of stock - let’s face it if people don’t want a Mel C cassette on week 2 then they are never going to want it.
However I’m sure Mel expected this kind of drop and it’s been a huge step up in chart terms from her previous efforts.
I think people give way too much importance to whether the album spends a second week in the charts or not. Charting at...#90, for example, is not going to make the difference between a successful campaign or not. Likewise, it may not make sense for her to put the album on sale if it means to get less money per copy. The casual public at large is not going to buy an album in 2020, they will listen on Spotify and if they spend any money they will rather pay a streaming subscription. Streaming, thankfully, has gone really well for her this era, with at least three singles crossing the 1 million mark already/very soon. Four if we count High Heels. That's where her efforts to gain new listeners should go.
She knows that most of the physical albums are going to sell on the first week, and she will have made arrangements for that. I can't imagine she still has a room full of unsold copies.
1 million streams is nothing though, absolutely nothing. I know we applaud her for things like that as by her standards it is good but she can't rely on streaming for sales or money because her streaming numbers are so low.
This album will lose her shit loads of money any way, she might as well get as many sales out if it as she can. I mean 11 Cassettes in 4 days! If it was half price she would need to only sell 22 and she would be earning the same amount, 30 and she would have actually increased her profits and sales.
It's obviously sad to see her falling this hard, but still, there are soooo many artists releasing albums that won't even bother the top 40, she knows what she is doing and the tour last year surely made her a few millions. And who cares if she spends it on houses, cars or her career? I am sure she is still doing really well and earning royalties from Spice Girls music every month.
I'm not remotely surprised by that drop, it was what I had anticipated, but I'm very sad nonetheless as it absolutely deserves more! The most important thing truly is the top 10 peak though, nothing can take that from her and it got her a hell of a lot of good press - week 2 won't get any sort of press at all no matter how good or bad it goes.
Posted by: Sideout Oct 12 2020, 09:45 PM
Her social media team is not doing a great job. They should be posting on Twitter and Instagram everday. Melanie also should have been on TikTok this era to try and reach a younger audience. She has done a lot of press interviews and her social media never shares those. As a fan, you have to find those on YouTube yourself. Melanie is doing her career a disservice by not engaging on social media more often.
Sorry if this sounds too negative, but there's always room for improvement. This has more to do with her team than Melanie herself.
Posted by: jlj Oct 13 2020, 01:09 AM
I quite like the idea of doing promo / a discount in week 2 to try and prevent a second week drop.
It’s so common now though that unless your someone who’s either a global star or someone who’s main form of chart sales comes from streams that week two will always see a big decline it’s just worse when it’s people who’s heyday was well in the sales era. I think that’s why the main focus goes into week one try and get the best peak possible as week 2 will always see a huge drop no matter what.
If say the vinyl or cassettes come later or a price reduction it may have meant more time on the chart but then it may have peaked lower. I’d say she and label would rather a 8 - 108 chart run than a 16 - 76 one.
The fact she went top ten anyways is still great. That’s where the press etc would come from as well.
A couple of entries in the US Billboard charts:
TOP ALBUM SALES
TOP CURRENT ALBUM SALES
I assume the Top Album Sales chart is just physicals and downloads?
I wonder what Billboard defines as a "current" album?
According to Wikipedia, Top Album Sales is "a pure album sales chart" and Top Current Albums is " the same chart as Top Album Sales, with catalog titles removed. An album becomes a catalog title when it is more than 18 months old and has fallen below position 100 on the Billboard 200."
Monday - #102
Tuesday - #112
Thursday - #117
Well, as JosephStyles said, from Friday-Tuesday it had accumulated 93 downloads, so it's all very low there. I guess it at least gives it some exposure if it can stay on the iTunes albums chart and might inspire a casual buy or two.
I guess we're looking at ~8.2k sold in two weeks.
Posted by: Rob90 Oct 15 2020, 02:40 PM
Posted by: Jay* Oct 15 2020, 08:13 PM
It's certainly surprising that it's still hanging around in the iTunes chart!
~
Here's some more detailed midweek info, to expand on my earlier post:
#81 (402 sales) - Sunday
#102 (517 sales) [+115] - Monday
#112 (641 sales) [+124] - Tuesday
#114 (789 sales) [+148] - Wednesday
#117 (942 sales) [+153] - Thursday
942 sales =
702 Physicals (74.52%)
134 Streaming (14.23%)
106 Downloads (11.25%)
Melanie C is predicted to end up at #126, but I'm thinking she might slip to the 130s.
Posted by: sammy01 Oct 16 2020, 04:28 AM
Stages and VOM both charted top 200 for 2 weeks. Stages was a random 2nd week later after release when she flogged the album on QVC. VOM had a big 2nd week drop but stayed top 200 for a 2nd week.
Posted by: Spiceboy Oct 16 2020, 06:43 AM
She needs to get on QVC and get flogging again!!!
Posted by: Jay* Oct 16 2020, 10:01 AM
Melanie's Red Girl albums:
24-53-91-136-x [Beautiful Intentions]
57-97-200-x [This Time]
45-101-x [The Sea]
50-x-151-x [Stages]
25-146-x [Version of Me]
8-? [Melanie C]
With hindsight it looks odd that This Time, an album that peaked as low as #57, still at least managed a second week in the Top 100. It was also rather fortunate to get that third week in the Top 200! I wonder whether The Sea was close to managing a third week in the Top 200?
I wish albums were able to have better stability now, but streaming makes it impossible. There's so many old albums or Greatest Hits that casually generate thousands of streaming units a week. In her second week on sale it's too much of a uphill struggle to combat those streaming friendly albums with her physical sales.
