OCC staff reveal their all-time favourite albums.

QUOTE
Madonna – Confessions on a Dance Floor (Justin Myers, Freelance Online Editor)

Madge and me – we've been together since the beginning. Ever since she first appeared on TV as a kind of ragtag "oh I just made a record, you can dance to it if you want" half-finished popstar who looked like she'd got dressed at a jumble sale, the very small me gazed in wonder, and was hooked. There were ups and downs and many, many pop classics along the way, but while there is a special place in my heart for almost every Madonna track – even the 'bad' ones – it is this 2005 masterpiece that claims the largest share of all. Coming off the back of American Life, a relative mis-step both critically and in terms of sales, where else would Madonna go to lick her wounds but back home to the disco?

You'd be forgiven for thinking with its incessant, powerful beats and euphoric production, that Confessions would be just another anonymous dance album, but Madonna isn't afraid to go deeper and darker in places, musing on her megastardom, her marriage, her past and, a running theme throughout her career, religion. Led by the killer, Abba-sampling tour de force Hung Up, Confessions silenced naysayers – temporarily as it turned out, but never mind – and spawned Madonna's greatest world tour in over a decade. It's a relentless, breathless journey through Madonna's mind, all the while happily trapped in the best club you've ever been to in your life. When it ends, with the muted but still brilliant Like It Or Not, it's like stepping out from the club and into the harsh morning light – you just want to go back in for one more song. Please?

An 'imperial phase' is when a popstar is at the pinnacle of their career, shifting stacks of records, having big hits, selling out arenas, owning the radio and being generally unavoidable and untouchable. Many pop acts barely manage one. Thanks to this album, Madonna claimed her third. How many popstars can honestly say that?

Confessions on a Dance Floor confirmed what we guess we already knew – we're never done with Madonna until she's done with us.

Yes Justin! Quite possibly my favourite album of all time too. heart.gif

Crazy For You performed on X Factor:

Well this cover completely sucks the life out of the original but still great to see this song get acknowledged by X Factor. By no means a guilty pleasure though - it's the original and one of the best Madonna ballads. You believe every word she sings; so much power and emotional story to the vocals. A real beauty from her early 80s career.

20 years since this interview. I watched it in full for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. The way Madonna talked and came across in the Ray of Light era really fascinates me, I mean I've always been interested in her interviews but this era in particular saw Madonna with a new found attitude and manner, yet still with a hint of the rebel and cheekiness of the 80s/early 90s.

Watched In Bed With Madonna for first time in absolutely ages tonight.

What a watch so much I didn’t notice first time around.

I wish i was born at the time she was at her peak or been an age where i could take it in but you can just tell she’s untouchable and an ICON.

'Ray of Light' gets a psychedelic makeover:

I love it! Mad but it's so good. The band is Pond, they're from Australia and share members with fellow-natives Tame Impala.

Have a look over in the Gaga forum and show Madonna some support. Whose version of La Vie En Rose do you prefer?

There are times when I think it replaces Hung Up as my all time favourite Madonna single! The energy is so intense and addictive; Orbit really goes to town with his sonic wizardry. The climax of the song with those spectacular vocals... I can't express how ecstatic it makes me feel. Desperately need to hear it on a night out!

Show your Madonna support in the Kylie AF - which 'I Feel Love' sampling performance do you prefer? Madonna's 'Future Lovers' or Kylie's 'Light Years'?
