BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Olly Murs - Grow Up

Posted by: ThePensmith 27th September 2016, 08:12 PM

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01LELKG8Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474960253&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=olly+murs+24+hours&dpPl=1&dpID=31EDARUeHML&ref=plSrch

This was briefly showing up today on Amazon (although it's now disappeared again) but Olly's second single off the new album is called "Grow Up" and is out to download and stream next Friday. It's another collaboration with Wayne Hector, Steve Robson and Camille Purcell, who he worked on "You Don't Know Love" with.

There's a couple of disembodied sounding clips of it on Instagram if you look hard enough as he pre-recorded a performance of it for Michael McIntyre's BBC One show at the Palladium in London. It sounds quite "Dear Darlin'" esque from what I could make out. He also shot the video weekend before last in London and it's said to feature a cast of kids?

I look forward to hearing it but fear releasing it next Friday is too early with You Dont Know Love still performing well in the charts.

I think they've given up on it ever going top 10 so they probably think its time to move on.

Now confirmed by the man himself, along with the single artwork:

He has also in the last week been confirmed as one of the acts appearing on Children in Need Rocks at Royal Albert Hall on 2nd November.

Listening to this now, it sounds like a hit, even if it does sound very Heart FM/Radio 2 and I prefer You Don't Know Love.

Where can I listen to it?

This is a good song, I prefer it to YDKL, that didn't really connect with me.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 6th October 2016, 11:39 PM

This is really poor for me, disappointing as YDKL is my fave Olly track sad.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn 6th October 2016, 11:40 PM

This is so DULL...

Posted by: jase. 7th October 2016, 12:26 AM

Oh dear. After the general pop goodness of 'YDKL'...this is an extremely huge step back.

Posted by: J▲hq 7th October 2016, 08:25 AM

Get more of a 'classic Olly' vibe from this, it's nice but nowhere near as good as "You Don't Know Love" for me.

Posted by: gooddelta 7th October 2016, 01:20 PM

Hmm, sounds like a slightly slower version of Price Tag by Jessie J to me, it's alright and has a nice chord change at the end of the chorus but doesn't exactly sound like a big hit single.

Posted by: pippa 7th October 2016, 01:45 PM

I do believe this may not be the best decision on a single. Previously we all knew the sound Olly had and was working for him, and no one else really offered that style on the market. At the moment he in my opinion doesn't know what sound he wants but he is losing what was always so appealing about his sound.

Posted by: Regina 7th October 2016, 05:03 PM

I find it so hard to believe just how much Olly has fallen in my estimations. This is dire. YDKL eventually grew on me and was finally a step in the right direction
as it was different but this is just a huge step backwards :/ I've said it before and I'll say it again, he needs to take a break and find a new direction that's actually
listenable.

Posted by: twentyonemdh 7th October 2016, 05:49 PM

This is very 2012. Sounds absolutely huge, though, will certainly be top 10 this time in three weeks.

Posted by: Josh. 7th October 2016, 07:15 PM

I agree with Jahq that it feels very classic Olly which is definitely a good thing for me. Always been a fan of his singles but never clicked with YDKL like everyone else seemed to and this is already way more instant for me. Got a nice little tune and I can bop to it easy enough which is always what I've liked about his tunes. Reminds me a bit of Thinking Of Me in places which has always been one of his best imo biggrin.gif

Just heard this - it's not very good. You don't know love is quite catchy but this sounds amateurish and kiddy like. It will struggle to hang around.

Posted by: Liаm 9th October 2016, 01:15 PM

Definitely very bland. It's not terrible it's just sort of "wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio" really, he can do way better and You Don't Know Love was such a promising lead. It would have been great if the album was more along those lines.

The album's not even out yet for us to hear the rest of it, so how does that logic work?

I will concur however, that "You Don't Know Love" is the stronger of the two singles thus far in this campaign. I think this has probably been put out to show that this side of Olly is still present on the album to those fans worried he'd gone too "serious" with the last single (and there was a fair number of them I noticed), even know "You Don't Know Love" has had a steady and healthy chart run and 200k sales.

The acoustic version that was released of this on Friday is fabulous, really chilled and laidback smile.gif

Should be another comfortable top 20 by the time promo properly gets going for this with the album release etc.

The "I have no artistic growth" side? I doubt many people still want that. Him finally pulling his finger out and getting more serious was what he needed.

You made a perfectly valid point but then spoilt it by making the comment an overly harsh critique on the "no artistic growth" side. We get it loud and clear that he's not in your elite circle of "faves" Regina. It's getting tiresome beyond belief to hear it and unnecessary.

Posted by: Regina 9th October 2016, 07:17 PM

Overly harsh? laugh.gif omg. Saying he's had no growth is hardly being harsh when it's true. Releasing a song that could have been on his first album that came out 6 years
ago is not showing growth now is it?

Him not being one of my "faves" doesn't mean I can't criticise, I can (and do) do the same thing when someone like Kylie does this kind of thing. Don't get yourpantie sin a wad.

Official video is here. So cute/funny!

Posted by: Josh. 12th October 2016, 06:45 PM

Love this video a lot, after the more serious YDKL, I'm glad he's reverted to the cuter and boppier tunes/videos yet again. Definitely up there with my favourite songs of his already, it has a lovely little tune. Hope it grows into a big hit as it doesn't seem to be off to the best start ever so far. :/

Posted by: ros 15th October 2016, 04:21 PM

Discounted on iTunes already??

Posted by: Jonjo 15th October 2016, 04:36 PM

Yes. It is discounted already. smile.gif

The video is adorable. The song is really growing on me too! Hope it can eventually pick up and become another hit for him!

Posted by: Scene 18th October 2016, 03:31 PM

I'm with Regina on this one. It reminds me of his debut material and sounds dated. I thought Olly was finally evolving with YDKL but I don't think GU will appeal to as many people outside of his fanbase. I've always found Olly really hit-and-miss as an artist and, along with Stevie Knows, this is a major miss imo.

Acoustic performance with TMRW magazine (who he has a cover feature with next month):

He was also on Lorraine yesterday talking about the single and doing Gogglebox with Niall Horan for Stand Up to Cancer:

Will also be performing this on X Factor in a few weekends time and he has "something special planned"...if it's anything like the video I can't wait!
