Bugzy Malone and Dermot Kennedy
Don't Cry

3rd single from The Resurrection
Released: 20th November 2020
Label: B-Somebody

Biography

Bugzy Malone
Manchester-based MC Bugzy Malone exploded on the indie grime scene in 2015, racking up 18 million views plus a MOBO nomination that year for Best New Artist. He made his debut in 2010 with the Swaggaman mixtape, and Why So Serious followed in 2011, while Lost in Meanwhile City dropped in 2012. His "0161 Manny on the Map" T-shirts began to be spotted in 2014, a ramp-up year that featured the release of The Journal of an Evil Genius, a mixtape supported by six straight weeks of new video uploads. His 2015 appearance on BBC Radio 1Xtra's freestyle show Fire in the Booth received millions of views within the month it was uploaded; then the Stereotyped mixtape landed before the official release Walk with Me appeared on the Grimey Limey label. The debut EP climbed into the Top Ten of the U.K. albums chart.

Malone saw more success with his subsequent EPs; 2016's Facing Time once again dominated the U.K. Top Ten upon its release. That same year, Bugzy put out a trilogy of music videos entitled Section 8(1), with each video intended to accompany one of three singles from the Facing Time EP: the title track, "Beauty and the Beast," and "I Suggest." The young MC's success became the ultimate catalyst for his burgeoning workflow, and his prolific output produced another release not long afterward with 2017's King of the North EP. The effort featured U.K. 2-step garage duo DJ Luck and MC Neat. The following year, Malone returned with his proper debut album, B. Inspired. Released on his own label, the album saw him working with the likes of producers Zdot and Diztortion on the tracks "Warning" and "Drama."

Dermot Kennedy
Dermot Kennedy’s rip-roaring, free-flowing folk-pop grew out of years singing over rowdy crowds at local bars and open mics and in the streets of Dublin. Born in 1991, the singer/songwriter was raised in the small Irish village of Rathcoole, where he began writing songs as a teenager before studying classical music at Maynooth University and forming folk band Shadows and Dust. He soon set off on his own, busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street, the same spot favored by famous street musicians like Glen Hansard, The Frames frontman and Once actor. Kennedy built up his raspy, throat-ripping howls on the pavement, but found his largest following online after he self-released romantic ballads like 2015’s “An Evening I Will Not Forget” and 2016’s “After Rain”. A larger audience exposed him to a few key producers, including Stephen Kozmeniuk (Koz) and Mike Dean, both of whom have helped enhance the poetic intimacy of Kennedy’s songwriting with rumbling beats and expansive electronic production. Finding a delicate balance between soaring folk and understated hip-hop has been the key to Kennedy’s sound, starting with his 2019 debut album, Without Fear. His strengths come in turning quiet melodies into rousing anthems, including “Power Over Me”, a propulsive paean that captures the intoxicating rush of becoming enraptured, and “Outnumbered”, which feels almost gospel-like in its cathartic chorus. Meanwhile, his voice—a slightly weathered mix of grit and gravel—ties it all together, bringing the raw intensity he learned as a busker to pop charts around the world. - iTunes

Ava Max
My Head & My Heart

6th single from Heaven & Hell
Released: 19th November 2020
Label: Atlantic Records

Video

Biography

Channeling the imaginations and aesthetics of forebears like Sia and Lady Gaga, Albanian-American pop singer/songwriter Ava Max delivers empowering, dance-friendly anthems similar to contemporaries such as Bebe Rexha, Sigrid, and Dua Lipa. Emerging in the late 2010s, she appeared on collaborations with Le Youth, Witt Lowry, and David Guetta while also releasing her own singles, including her breakthrough smash hit "Sweet but Psycho," which topped the charts in almost two dozen countries. In 2020, she issued her debut full-length, Heaven & Hell.

Born Amanda Ava Koci in Wisconsin, she was raised by Albanian immigrant parents in Virginia. She started singing at a young age and was already active in singing competitions by the time she reached high school. After moving to Los Angeles to pursue music full-time, she joined local disco revival producer Le Youth on his bright dance track "Clap Your Hands," which became a summer hit in 2017. The next year, she showcased her Sia-esque vocals with debut solo single "My Way" (Atlantic) before following with "Slippin" and "Not Your Barbie Girl," which interpolated Aqua's '90s classic. That year, she also joined rapper Witt Lowry on his track "Into Your Arms" and David Guetta on "Let It Be Me" from his album 7. Ava Max issued her biggest hit to date that summer as breakthrough single "Sweet but Psycho" -- an addictive pop gem produced by Cirkut (the Weeknd, Katy Perry, Rihanna) -- began charting across Europe. As the song built momentum across the globe, she signed with Full Stop Management, home to Charli XCX, Harry Styles, HAIM, and others.

By summer 2019, "Sweet but Psycho" had topped over a dozen charts in Europe, as well as in New Zealand and on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. The sleeper hit was soon certified multi-platinum in Australia, the U.S., and the U.K. Max followed with modest hit "So Am I," which got the K-pop remix treatment with guests NCT 127. Gearing up for her official full-length, she released the additional singles "Salt," "Freaking Me Out," and "Alone, Pt. II" with Alan Walker. Max kicked off 2020 with the album's fifth single, "Kings & Queens." Another modest hit, the track became her second to chart on the Billboard 200. After years of build up, her official debut finally arrived in September. Heaven & Hell was thematically split into the titular sides and featured production by Cirkut and RedOne.

Biography

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming.

Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.”

Those old sales look great. Wonder if Ariana can even match the sales Madonna had in 2005. Positions appears to be cruising at the moment.
