BuzzJack Music Forum _ International Charts _ MTV Euro Top Chart - (broadcast on MTV Europe) - 2019

Posted by: bobiloko 5th January 2019, 03:41 PM

The old MTV European Top 20 chart, which had been broadcast on MTV Europe for more than 20 years, ended in 2012. However, it looks like since January 4, 2014 some European "chart" has started being broadcast again on MTV Europe. The chart is broadcast on Fridays from 19:00 to 21:00 CET; on Saturdays from 11:00 to 13:00 CET; and on Sundays from 9:00 to 11:00 CET.
Previously the chart seemed to be a Top 40 but in recent years MTV Europe sometimes has also shown positions between number 50 and number 41, indicating a Top 50. However, not all the positions are shown - some of them are skipped each week.
The songs that are skipped on this "Euro Top Chart" seem to be one of two cases: either songs that aren't played on MTV Europe in general (especially if they don't have an official video yet); or when an artist has more than one song in the chart, not all are shown.
It's also notable that the upper part of this chart is basically the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart that is broadcast on MTV Italy.

"Happier" by Marshmello and Bastille first appeared in this chart at the end of September 2018. The song quickly climbed to number 5 but then it started falling... until it left the Top 20 of the chart at the end of the year. However, now it has suddenly climbed back and reaches a new peak position of number 2 - 4 months after its debut!

1 Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho 2 Up

"Sweet But Psycho" by Ava Max returns to number 1 - this is its fifth (nonconsecutive) week there. Now the song has had 3 separate runs at the top.
In the previous edition of the chart I commented about the peculiar chart run of "Happier" by Marshmello and Bastille. Now "High Hopes" by Panic! At The Disco experiences something similar. "High Hopes" first appeared in this chart in September 2018, later it climbed as high as number 6 and started falling. It fell as low as number 19 - exactly in the previous edition of the chart. However, now it jumps 16 places up to reach a new peak position of number 3!

MTV Europe played "Thursday" by Jess Glynne and showed it as number 9; then they played "Shallow" by Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper... and also showed it as number 9! When we take into consideration the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", it's obvious that "Shallow" is supposed to be at number 8.
There is a very mysterious appearance of "Power Over Me" by Dermot Kennedy at number 33. From what I could find, the song has appeared in the singles chart of only 2 European countries - Germany (with a peak position of number 59) and Sweden (with a peak position of number 56)...
Weslife are back! They were last seen in this chart at the beginning of 2003 with "Unbreakable". Now "Hello My Love" appears at number 3 - and thus becomes their second highest charting song ever! Only "Uptown Girl" reached a higher peak position - number 2. Oh, and their very first song to reach the chart was "If I Let You Go" back in 1999 - 20 years ago!

MTV Europe played a total of 26 songs from the chart. If I'm not mistaken, this is only the second time they have played that many songs from a single edition of the chart! I certainly approve of this - especially when they are willing to play the new songs that are doing well across Europe!

2 Sam Smith & Normani - Dancing With A Stranger 1 Down
1 Lady GaGa & Bradley Cooper - Shallow 5 Up

In this edition of the chart, Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper achieve something really impressive with "Shallow". What is the record for the longest time before a song returns to number 1?
Here are the 2 instances which might have been joint record holders until now:
In 2009, "I Gotta Feeling" by Black Eyed Peas spent a single week at the top, fell down for a week, then returned to number 1 for a second single-week run there. That's not the record - what happened after that is. "I Gotta Feeling" fell down once again and climbed back to the top once again 11 WEEKS LATER.
In 1990, "I've Been Thinking About You" by Londonbeat spent an unknown number of weeks at number 1 (there are some missing editions of the chart in the archive) and fell down. It returned to the top in 1991 - either 10 WEEKS LATER (if we only count "normal" editions of the chart) or 11 WEEKS LATER (if we also count the special edition of the chart for the whole year 1990).
"Shallow" spent 2 consecutive weeks at the top at the end of October and the beginning of November 2018. Then it fell down and spent some time in the Top 10... In 2019 it fell as low as number 15 but then experienced a remarkable rebirth. Certainly helped by the Oscars, now "Shallow" returns to number 1 either 17 WEEKS (if we only count "normal" editions of the chart) or 18 WEEKS (if we also count the special edition of the chart for the whole year 2018) after it was there last!!!!!!
Amazing indeed!

Calvin Harris scores yet another number 1 with "Giant". His previous chart-topper was "Promises", last year's collaboration with Sam Smith (who was at the top just 2 weeks ago with another song - "Dancing With A Stranger").
As for Rag'n'Bone Man - this is his very first number 1. He came really close with "Human", which spent a total of 4 (nonconsecutive) weeks at number 2.

It's quite strange that "Peer Pressure" by James Bay and Julia Michaels appears in the chart. The song doesn't have an official video (yet) so MTV Europe played a live performance.
"Shallow" returns to the top for a fourth (nonconsecutive) week there. Its third week at number 1 happened 2 weeks ago. What about the first 2 weeks of its reign at the top? They occurred back at the end of October and the beginning of November 2018!...

MTV Europe has changed its schedule. Now the "Euro Top Chart" is broadcast from 18:00 to 20:00 CET on Friday; from 10:00 to 12:00 CET on Saturday; and from 9:00 to 11:00 CET on Sunday.
This is really a unique occasion as MTV Europe played a total of 28 songs from the chart! They have NEVER played that many songs from a single edition of the chart before! It has happened twice for MTV Europe to play 26 songs... but never 27 songs - let alone 28!!!!!!

IMPORTANT:
This week I won't be able to watch the "Euro Top Chart". Would sdizda or someone else be so kind to watch the chart and write it down? MTV Europe broadcasts it 3 times during the week: from 18:00 to 20:00 CET on Friday; from 10:00 to 12:00 CET on Saturday; and from 9:00 to 11:00 CET on Sunday.

Did anyone manage to watch the chart last week?

Thank you very much, sdizda!
The edition of the chart broadcast on April 19 is actually the same as the one broadcast on April 20 and April 21. It's just that in the edition broadcast on April 19 MTV Europe showed a "compressed" version of the chart - with the songs presented as a Top 24. On the other hand, on April 20 and April 21 MTV Europe showed the real positions of the songs - with the gaps between them...
What's worrying is that when I watched the latest edition of the chart, MTV Europe only played 20 songs - the first one they showed was "Con Altura" by Rosalia and J Balvin at number 29...
However, it's actually impressive that at the moment MTV Europe are willing to play so many songs in Spanish - "Con Altura", "Calma", "Con Calma"...
...And speaking of "Con Calma"... This is a new version of Snow's hit "Informer", which spent a total of 3 weeks at number 1 in this chart in 1993. It was also his only single to ever appear in the chart... until now! He's back 26 YEARS LATER!!!

The big problem is that it seems like MTV Europe has started playing a much smaller number of songs on Saturdays - this time they played only 17 songs! And they didn't only skip the songs at the bottom but also the 4 songs placed between number 16 and number 13 ("Sucker", "Boasty", "Con Calma" and "I'm So Tired")...

"Bad Liar" by Imagine Dragons actually falls 3 places down.
The situation around "SOS" by Avicii and Aloe Blacc is quite sad... OK, according to this chart, the song is the current number 1... Has Avicii had any other chart-toppers? "Wake Me Up!" absolutely certainly would have reached number 1 in 2013... but there was no European chart broadcast on MTV Europe between August 2012 and the end of 2013...
On the other hand, while I only started watching the chart (again) in February 2014 so I can't confirm this, "Hey Brother" seems to have spent 2 weeks at the top in January 2014 - judging by the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20".
Ah, MTV Italy... This brings us to the sad part - "SOS" is not really the current number 1!...
In the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" the number 1 is "ME!" by Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie while "SOS" is at number 2. However, MTV Europe pretended that "ME!" doesn't exist and so each song below it moved a place higher!
As a result, "SOS", which was actually at number 2, was presented as the chart-topper...

"Wake Me Up!" spent 12 weeks at #1 according to this MTV archive first hitting at #1 on August 17:

Yes, because Markus (Tolksdorf), whose website has this archive, has decided to count the editions of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" chart from the period between August 2012 and the end of 2013 as if they were also editions of MTV Europe's European chart. But the truth is that during that period no European chart was broadcast on MTV Europe, nor was any European chart shown on MTV Europe's website.

1 Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved 1 Up

"Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi returns to number 1 - this is its seventh (nonconsecutive) week there.
This time MTV Europe did play "ME!" by Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie... but it's not at the top anymore... I can only hope that it will return to number 1 and then MTV Europe will play it - otherwise it will remain in the history of the chart as a skipped number 1 (like "One Kiss" by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa and also possibly Taylor Swift's own "Bad Blood")...

Posted by: Euphorique 30th May 2019, 10:28 AM

The chart is just weird now. Especially the way they skip massive hits like "In My Mind"

It's great that now MTV Europe played for the first time quite a few songs that are having success across Europe... Yet neither "Old Town Road" nor "I Don't Care" has managed to overthrow "Someone You Loved" - for now, at least.

MTV Europe has changed its schedule. Now the "Euro Top Chart" is broadcast from 9:00 to 11:00 CET on Friday and from 6:00 to 8:00 CET on Sunday.
"Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi spends a ninth week at number 1, thus becoming the first song to be at the top for more than 8 weeks since "Rockabye" by Clean Bandit, Sean Paul and Anne-Marie, which reigned over the chart for a total of 11 weeks during the end of 2016/beginning of 2017.
Just like last year, the winner of this year's Eurovision Song Contest appears in the chart - "Arcade" by Duncan Laurence from the Netherlands!

The edition of the chart broadcast on June 14 is actually the same as the one broadcast on June 16. It's just that in the edition broadcast on June 14 MTV Europe showed a "compressed" version of the chart - with the songs presented as a Top 27. On the other hand, on June 16 MTV Europe showed the real positions of the songs - with the gaps between them...
"I Don't Care" becomes the sixth number 1 for Ed Sheeran after "Sing", "Thinking Out Loud", "Castle On The Hill", "Shape Of You" and "Perfect"; and the seventh number 1 for Justin Bieber after "All I Want For Christmas Is You" (the duet version with Mariah Carey - yes, really!), "What Do You Mean?", "Sorry", "Love Yourself", "Let Me Love You" (with DJ Snake) and "I'm The One" (with DJ Khaled); I'm not counting his "contribution" on "Despacito".

1 Lil' Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus - Old Town Road 1 Up

At the very beginning of this year, Miley Cyrus reached number 1 with "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart" (together with Mark Ronson). Now Billy Ray Cyrus does the same with "Old Town Road" (together with Lil' Nas X)!
I'll have to check the archives to see whether there have been other cases in the history of this chart when both a parent and a child have scored chart-toppers. In any case, I don't think any have achieved this in one and the same year... and ESPECIALLY I don't believe there has been any instance when the child has gone to number 1 BEFORE the parent!!!!!!

IMPORTANT:
This week I won't be able to watch the "Euro Top Chart". Would sdizda or someone else be so kind to watch the chart and write it down? MTV Europe broadcasts it 2 times during the week: from 9:00 to 11:00 CET on Friday and from 6:00 to 8:00 CET on Sunday.

1 Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down

Taylor Swift reaches number 1 once again - this time with "You Need To Calm Down". Her previous single - "ME!" - also spent a week at the top... however, MTV Europe didn't show that! During that edition of the chart MTV Europe pretended that "ME!" doesn't exist and, as a result, "SOS" by Avicii and Aloe Blacc (which was actually at number 2) was presented as the chart-topper...

1 Meduza & Goodboys - Piece Of Your Heart 5 Up

"Piece Of Your Heart" by Meduza and Goodboys becomes one of the more surprising number ones in the history of this chart. It's not that the song is among the least-deserving chart-toppers - it has actually had success across Europe... It's just that it has already spent several months in the chart, climbed as high as number 4, then fell as low as number 10... and now, after so much time, suddenly jumps to the top! That's quite a shock!

After others songs reigned at the top for 4 weeks, now "Old Town Road" returns to number 1 for a third (nonconsecutive) week there.
However, the story (and question) of the week is one place below. How can "Castles" by Freya Ridings - a song which has only reached number 18 in the UK and number 21 in Ireland - be placed at number 2 in a chart which is supposed to cover ALL of Europe?

It's quite notable that MTV Europe played 3 different songs by Ed Sheeran during this edition of the chart - "I Don't Care", "Antisocial" and "Beautiful People". In previous years MTV Europe seemed to refuse to play more than one song by an artist during one and the same edition of the chart...

"Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello returns to number 1 - this is its third (nonconsecutive) week there.

"Boyfriend", not surprisingly, becomes Social House's first chart-topper. On the other hand, it's Ariana Grande's third number 1. Her first chart-topper was another collaboration - "Bang Bang", with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj.
Now, can you guess - out of all the possible options - which was Ariana's second number 1 in this chart???
..."God Is A Woman"!!!

1 Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Señorita 1 Up

"Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello is back at number 1 for a fourth (nonconsecutive) week - a total accumulated over 4 separate runs at the top.
Of course, this means that the previous chart-topper - "Boyfriend" by Ariana Grande and Social House - is no longer at the top... But where has it gone? It's fallen 14 places to number 15! Which is evidence that it might not have been a deserving number 1...
And once again a song appears in this chart and I wonder why... "Bouncin'" by Kiana Ledé hasn't appeared in the singles chart of any European country... yet somehow it's here!

1 Kygo & Whitney Houston - Higher Love

When MTV Europe played "Gone" by Charli XCX and Christine & The Queens, they showed its position as number 23. However, before "Gone" they had played "Someone You Loved" as number 34 and after "Gone" they played "Be Honest" as number 32. So obviously this was a mistake and "Gone" is actually supposed to be at number 33.
"Higher Love" becomes Kygo's first chart-topper. Previously, his highest-peaking song in this chart had been his first hit, "Firestone", which reached number 2.
And then we come to Whitney Houston...
She last appeared in MTV Europe's European chart with "Could I Have This Kiss Forever" - her duet with Enrique Iglesias - during the end of 2000 and the very first week of 2001. More than 18 years have passed since then...
We have archives for MTV Europe's European chart dating back to September 1989. During this period, Whitney had scored 2 number ones - "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "I Will Always Love You".
"I Will Always Love You" reached the top at the beginning of 1993... Now Whitney is at number 1 again, this time with "Higher Love" - 26 YEARS LATER!!!!!!

1 Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Señorita 2 Up

When MTV Europe played "Heaven" by Avicii and Chris Martin, they showed its position as number 18. However, before "Heaven" they had played "Be Honest" as number 26 and after "Heaven" they played "Spirit" as number 24. So obviously this was a mistake and "Heaven" is actually supposed to be at number 25.
"Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello makes history this week. It's back at number 1 for a fifth (nonconsecutive) week - a total accumulated over 5 separate runs at the top! In the history of this chart, only one other song has had 5 separate runs at number 1 - "Alors On Danse" by Stromae achieved it in 2010.

What's impressive is the chart performance of "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish. It became number 1 in the chart of May 4, 2019. Since then it has had its ups and downs but is as high as number 6 now, six months later!

Looking at the song at number 6, you might think that I'm joking... Well, while there is indeed a joke, it's MTV Europe themselves that have made it! They did in fact play "Señorita" by Justin Timberlake at number 6 instead of the song with the same title by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello! Otherwise, "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello is down 3 places from last week. And "Señorita" by Justin Timberlake was in the chart at the end of 2003 (and the first week of 2004). It peaked at number 5.

Posted by: bobiloko 10th November 2019, 12:27 PM

Sadly, MTV Europe didn't play the chart of November 9, 2019. Instead, they repeated the chart of November 2, 2019! But judging by the corresponding (to the missing one) edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", "Circles" by Post Malone spends a third consecutive week at number 1.

1 DJ Regard - Ride It

The two songs with the participation of Camila Cabello - "Señorita" and "South Of The Border" - are standing next to each other at number 6 and number 5!
Artists who have origins from Kosovo have had chart-toppers in this chart. Dua Lipa reached number 1 with "One Kiss", her collaboration with Calvin Harris - although, inexplicably, MTV Europe didn't play the song while it was on top! Rita Ora has scored three different chart-toppers - "Anywhere", "For You" (with Liam Payne) and "Let You Love Me". However, both of them actually have English(/British?) nationality.
With "Ride It", DJ Regard becomes (as far as I understand) the first artist with a Kosovan/Kosovar nationality to have a number 1 in MTV Europe's European chart.
By the way, Jay Sean's original version of "Ride It" never reached the chart!

"Memories" becomes Maroon 5's fourth number 1 in MTV Europe's European chart after "She Will Be Loved", "Moves Like Jagger" (with Christina Aguilera) and "Payphone".

One artist who has origins from Kosovo replaces another at number 1! Dua Lipa has already had a chart-topper with "One Kiss", her collaboration with Calvin Harris - although, inexplicably, MTV Europe didn't play the song while it was on top! So even though "Don't Start Now" is Dua Lipa's second number 1 in this chart, it's the first one to actually be played while being on top!

In 2017 and 2018, during the last week of the year MTV Europe broadcast a special edition of the chart - for the whole year. However, in 2019 the last edition of the chart is an "ordinary" edition.
Surprisingly, "Memories" by Maroon 5 returns to number 1 for a second week there. Its first week at the top was 5 weeks ago.
With "Borders" (a collaboration with SAINt JHN) Lenny Kravitz appears in MTV Europe's European chart for the first time since 2008 - with "I'll Be Waiting".

As it turns out, MTV Europe did broadcast a special edition of the chart - for the whole year 2019! It's just that they didn't broadcast it during the last week of 2019 but during the first week of 2020!
Some of the inclusions are questionable as they weren't really among the most successful songs in this chart in 2019... On the other hand, there are some notable omissions - mainly songs that reached number 1. Here are the chart-toppers from 2019 which weren't included in this edition: "SOS" by Avicii and Aloe Blacc (which was actually at number 2 but was presented as the chart-topper; MTV Europe didn't play the real number 1 during that week - "ME!" by Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie - and pretended that it doesn't exist); "I Don't Care" by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber; "You Need To Calm Down" by Taylor Swift; "Boyfriend" by Ariana Grande and Social House; "Ride It" by DJ Regard; "Memories" by Maroon 5; and "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa.
Finally, "Shallow" by Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper appeared both in the chart for the whole year 2018 (at number 19) and in the chart for the whole year 2019 (at number 8)!
