More than ever it looks like it'll be the last week as Shawn Mendes has overtaken on streaming and perhaps by next week will have made enough difference to offset the sales gap. In the wake of his new album, Ed Sheeran does as he does and fills up a 3rd slot of the top 10, although it seems like "Cross Me" has been dumped on Spotify so he'll be back down to 2 next week. Prior to this week, there'd only been 2 Australian top 10 hits. Firstly Ocean Alley sneaking a #9 peak post Hottest 100 win, and secondly Dean Lewis sneaking a #10 peak on album release week. It's hard to call something organic when it's by an artist heavily served by every promotional opportunity available for the last 15 years, but nonetheless Guy Sebastian's "Choir", his first top 10 hit since 2013 appears to have the organic swell to spend a little longer there, as it continues to climb on all fronts and now hits #10. Tones and I is also having rather unusual success. She's only released two singles ever and both of them are in the top 20 this week. There's also a Chris Brown song there but I don't know what you want me to say about that. Kygo scores his 10th top 50 hit and returns Whitney Houston to the top 50 for the first time since her posthumous returns in 2012. Kane Brown also gets his first ever entry via Marshmello. But it wouldn't be my ARIA commentary if I didn't shed light on the perpetual nonsense that is songs inexplicably not charting. This week it's Jonas Brothers' "Only Human", Y2K's "lalala" and Lil Tecca's "Ransom", all should be at least top 70. Their diligence just means that for once a random P!nk single that gets disproportionately thrashed by radio actually made the chart. Based on ARIA's Pulse Chart they posted today, it looks like none of these songs will be entering this week, though that's not always conclusive as Flume's latest single was seemingly missing from the midweek data when it debuted 2 weeks ago. Kylie Minogue has released many Greatest Hits sets over the years. "Ultimate Kylie" from 2004 in particular sold quite well. For the first time, one of these has taken the #1 slot, despite the fact that it adheres to international influence and leaves off "Did It Again" which was a sizable hit here. It also pays off well that it's not exactly a busy week in terms of huge selling new entries, and isn't especially far ahead of Billie Eilish at #2. Chris Brown is still yet to score a #1 album but now has 7 top 5 entries. The Black Keys had a monster success in 2011/2012 with "El Camino" and thus it seemed inevitable that their next album after that would go straight in at #1 no matter what, which it did. With that moment having passed, they're at a more modest #4 with their 4th consecutive top 10 album. Ed Sheeran is also back in the top 10 assumably because he appears in the latest musical boomer wallet grab movie whose soundtrack is just a little lower, and P!nk's "Beautiful Trauma" is back in the top 10 for reasons I've not worked out yet, oddly as her current album falls several places. "Beautiful Trauma" actually sold more physical copies this week than "Hurts 2B Human". |

Old Town Road can stay if the alternatives are Shawn Mendes and Ed Sheeran. C'mon.

Yet again it seems inevitable that Shawn Mendes will get there, but he could possibly have to wait another week just because of the new remix, it'll probably be pretty close. The big elephant in the room should be Ed Sheeran's new album out this week, but I can't see him coming close to contending, which is something of a downslide from when he commanded the top two slots on the release of his last album. He'll do well though, as I expect to see the entire album in the top 100 next week. As well as aiding Lil Nas X this week, Young Thug has also aided Post Malone on "Goodbyes" which is his 3rd song to debut straight in the top 5 (following "Psycho" and "Better Now"), and 8th top 10 hit overall (of these, only "Paranoid" and "Goodbyes" are not top 2 hits). In a weird coincidence, Post Malone scores a new entry this week the same week Sam Feldt scores his 2nd ever chart entry with a song called "Post Malone". Guy Sebastian can also now claim as having the highest charting Australian song of the year as "Choir" leaps to #7, but he actually has competition with Tones And I bolting up to #10 with "Dance Monkey", which continues to make strong gains on sales & streaming into this week. New Australian artists breaking tends to be a rarity so instead Jessica Mauboy & Illy add to their tallies of top 50 hits this week, both having been around for over a decade at this point. With 5 Seconds Of Summer also randomly slipping back in, there are now 10 Australian entries in the top 10 which is considerably above average. Lizzo belatedly reaches the top 20 with "Truth Hurts" after peaking at #21 several weeks back, while Y2K & bbno$ have belatedly been let on the chart as well. The other top 50 debuts are from Ed Sheeran. "Best Part Of Me" fairs the best via streaming and the fact that it's on the playlists, but "BLOW" has been received surprisingly well on radio and in turn iTunes, enough to get it into the top 40 to give Chris Stapleton his first ever top 50 hit (previously "Tennessee Whiskey" made the top 100 for 1 week). The album chart continues to significantly lack vitality meaning Billie Eilish returns to #1 by default for a 7th week. J. Cole would otherwise have joined the very elite company of only a handful of rappers who have scored multiple #1 albums, reaching #2 with his Dreamville collaborative project. Interestingly "MIDDLE CHILD" is the only top 100 entry from it despite it getting the vast majority of its points this week from streams. Machine Gun Kelly gets his highest ever charting album, and Jaden Smith gets his first ever top 50 album. The INXS nostalgia-fest that has run concurrently with the ALP's reign in government for the past 6 years and counting finds new blood via a new Michael Hutchence documentary and soundtrack, although it debuts below the ever-present "Greatest Hits". Next week's #1 album is a total mystery. |

XXXTentacion 50 56 06 03 HAPPINESS BEGINS Jonas Brothers It would be very easy to believe that Lil Nas X released the Young Thug & Mason Ramsey remix of "Old Town Road" to secure his 16th week in the US, but ironically I don't know if he actually needed that over there, and instead it just helped him score a 13th week at #1 in Australia, with a just slightly bigger margin than last week. With that he matches "Despacito" as the equal 2nd longest running #1 hit of the century, coincidentally it's the first place holder Ed Sheeran who cut into his run when "I Don't Care" debuted for a week, but "Shape Of You" is still 2 weeks ahead anyway (and was subject to its own interruption courtesy of Harry Styles). I say this every week but I do think "Senorita" looks primed to take the top spot this week, which is fortunate for Shawn Mendes because I think it's his last chance now. With slight courtesy of her opening slot at Splendour In The Grass, one of Australia's largest annual music festivals, an addition to Today's Top Hits (and sizable bump on Hot Hits Australia), everything's coming up Tones And I right now, and "Dance Monkey" looks primed for #1, only it started this tracking week too far behind to get there. Billie Eilish also climbs back up to #3 courtesy of that Justin Bieber remix which Spotify alone is trying desperately to pretend people are here for. The only other news this week is Ed Sheeran. When his last album came out, the entire tracklist made the ARIA top 40 a distinction it still holds to itself but only because ARIA mucked up Kanye's streaming numbers last year. Funnily enough, a distinction Ed didn't get is that of having the highest debut on that week's chart. Lorde's "Green Light" debuted at #4 ahead of "Dive" at #5. As a cosmic oddity, Ed need not worry about that because he managed to pick a week where he has the only debuts on the chart. That sort of concentration of attention may have helped him a little though it is something of an expected comedown with *only* 11 of the 15 tracks in the top 50 this week. The most interesting thing for me is that he only barely surpassed the present benchmark of his last album. "Nothing On You" debuted at #65, which is only 1 spot ahead of "Perfect" at #66 this week. 1 spot away from me making an outrageously hyperbolic statement that Ed is a nostalgic act now. The highest debut is "Antisocial" at #11, narrowly missing the benchmark of Travis Scott's last album which netted "SICKO MODE" and "STARGAZING" both in the top 10. With that in mind, I can give the unfortunate news that Stormzy's highest charting single is now his Ed Sheeran collaboration, meanwhile J Hus, H.E.R., Paulo Londra & Dave are only now hitting the ARIA singles chart for the first time ever because of him. In an unsurprising absolute non-contest, Ed Sheeran scores his 4th #1 album to date. He does so however with a significant decline in sales from past form, to the point that P!nk still holds the title for the biggest opening week of 2019. With fairly low sales across the board otherwise, it provides ample opportunity for other artists to reach crazy heights. For instance, Dope Lemon is here at #2, a significant improvement on their previous outing at #11. If you're wondering what the heck that is, it's one of many solo projects of Angus Stone, who between usually performing with his sister, one solo album and another side project Lady Of The Sunshine (most notable for releasing "Big Jet Plane" a year before the only slightly different Angus & Julia Stone version became a monster hit), has charted under 4 different monikers. So this isn't *really* unprecedented for him because even his solo album also hit #2, but I digress. Genuinely hitting new highs though is Thelma Plum, largely because it's her first album but having never touched the singles chart, #4 is pretty impressive. It's also quite a long time coming, I've been hearing her songs on the radio since 2012. Since then she's become the target of ire of racists & misogynists for not being 'one of the good ones' but has been putting out consistently strong indie pop singles along the way. Allday has also been around in the public eye since 2012 but he's been a little more productive with 5 albums to his name now. His peak position trend is on the decline but he scores his 3rd top 10 album this week. Because I was clearly just saying to myself that we need more soundtracks on the album chart built around some form of nostalgia, here comes The Lion King ahead of its theatrical release. The original soundtrack was the 6th highest seller of 1994. Banks also returns with her 3rd album with a little less attention than before it would seem. Her last album landed in the top 10, this time she's in at #25. |

It's also Camila's 2nd following "Havana". They're also immensely lucky because this seems to have been their last chance. Tones And I continues to ride massive waves of momentum and now sits at #1 on iTunes, Apple, Spotify, Shazam...and #23 on radio because they're allergic to new artists. "Dance Monkey" will certainly go #1 next week and be the first Australian #1 single in a year. I can also now return to saying that everything she's ever released has hit the top 40, as 3rd single "Never Seen The Rain" enters at #38. Sam Smith slightly outpaces the debut position (#19) of "Dancing With A Stranger" as "How Do You Sleep?" goes in at #14, looking good for a top 10 position next week. Displacement of Ed Sheeran tracks also helps Whitney Houston score her first new top 20 hit since 2000 with "Higher Love" climbing to #20. Ed Sheeran naturally retains the top spot, surpassing the 1 week run of "+" but a long way from matching his other albums. Swedish heavy metal band Sabaton have the highest new entry, their first ever top 10. Beyonce's complimentary album is a little too low to blame the Lion King soundtrack from keeping it out of the top 10. Thom Yorke also belatedly enters the top 50 with the physical release of his solo album, previously charting below #50, something of a far cry from the #2 peak of his first solo album. Next week seems to be free of #1 challengers but we'll see if NF, Angie McMahon, Chance The Rapper or Of Monsters and Men can break the top 10. |

This comes as no surprise as Tones And I is dominating every metric with "Dance Monkey", and those leads are still growing today (she has a 2:1 lead on iTunes now too). She could be in for the long run as there's a good chance the next #1 isn't on the chart yet. I expect Ariana Grande's new song to debut around #5 next week. The only other song gaining major traction at the moment is Lil Tecca's "Ransom", which seems to be this year's "Taste" because it's now top 10 on Spotify, but ARIA have already posted their mid-week preview for next week's chart and it's still nowhere to be seen. Marshmello, Y2K & Taylor Swift all hit the top 20 this week, and I've listed them in descending order of who has the best momentum going forward. Despite my theory that Chainsmokers singles with lesser name artists don't really get pushed, "Takeaway" is having bizarrely strong sales, and is naturally continuing their 19 month streak of having something on Hot Hits Australia. Ed Sheeran is #1 for a 3rd week obviously. His sales are dipping but when his closest competition is Billie Eilish coasting off momentum, there's not much stopping him. Getting the highest debut is NF, whose last album didn't even trouble the top 50 but now with more anticipation he's able to land at #3. Oft-acclaimed local singer-songwriter Angie McMahon's debut album lands at #5, while Chance The Rapper's much-derided new album is at #7, even though Australia seems to have largely turned on him since he cancelled his festival headline slot last month. Thy Art Is Murder's last two albums made the top 10, but now they're slightly down to #11. This is not as much of a slide as Of Monsters and Men whose first two albums peaked at #1 and #4, and now they're in at #21. YBN Cordae's album also debuts which serves as another reminder of our lousy charts as "RNP" was not counted on the chart this week (though it'd probably only be about #120). |

Her lead is still increasing right now and there's not much on the way up to stop her. Ariana Grande scores a new top 10 hit with "Boyfriend" at #4, which looks to be reasonably stable for now though it'll probably decline a little next week. It's the only new song to reach the entire top 20 this week, as Lil Tecca's "Ransom" continues to not exist (I suspect it would be #11-#15 this week and possibly challenging top 10 next week). It does make for a very prude unfriendly chart though with its profanities, especially since the only other debuts in the top 50 are so profane as to include it in their titles, from Lauv & Bazzi. "Bohemian Rhapsody" finally leaves the top 100 which should mean that "Shape Of You" would be the oldest song on the chart, except that Lizzo's "Good As Hell" has made it in and that's even older. Ed Sheeran easily logs a 4th week at #1. Local folk/blue/rock band The Teskey Brothers make for decent competition compared to recent #2 albums, with their 2nd album sending them quite a bit higher than their first. Just behind them is local metalcore band Northlane, who now have 3 #3 peaking albums to their name, in addition to one #1 back in 2015. Drake's collection of assorted songs from over the years reaches #7 and gives him a 7th top 10. Amidst all of this is perhaps the most interesting story of the week though not one that actually amounts to any change in history. Tool have always been immensely popular in Australia, something I can attest to despite them not having released an album while I've been especially following music. They're also arguably one of the most famous artists to never crack the singles chart because they never released singles. With the release of their catalogue on iTunes & Spotify this past week, "Stinkfist" came reasonably close to the chart, though I suspect "Fear Inoculum" will next week. Notably this week, 3 of their albums return to the top 10, the highest being "Ænima", which just so happens to exactly match its prior chart peak of #6. Their debut album "Undertow" never made the top 50 until this week though, same goes for their EP "Opiate". Just outside the top 10 is Holy Holy with their 3rd album and lowest peaker to date. They're one of a small handful of bands I've seen live in my backwards end of the country, and their guitarist produced one of my favourite songs of 2019 so far. Next week Ed Sheeran may be under threat, as Slipknot will be going for their 3rd #1 album. Bon Iver, SAFIA & Seeker Lover Keeper look to be among other noteworthy debuts this week. |

XXXTentacion 49 48 12 04 ALADDIN Soundtrack 50 07 02 07 CARE PACKAGE Drake Tones And I scores a 3rd week at #1. Her streams are so far ahead of the competition that she'd easily be #1 with 0 sales. In fact, a couple days ago, she was #1 on Australian Spotify with 92% as many streams as the UK's #1 that day, despite Australia's population being under 40% of the UK's. Given the largely frozen state of the top 10, it's fair to say that whatever song goes to #1 next probably hasn't shown itself. Billie Eilish's "bad guy" has spent the first 20 weeks of its chart run in the top 10, joining the leagues of "Roar", "Shake It Off", "I Gotta Feeling", "Closer", "Shape Of You", "Flaunt It" (by TV Rock) and "Breathe" (by The Prodigy). Ed Sheeran's 24 weeks is the record to chase. The major news this week is that a lightbulb turned on at ARIA because Lil Tecca is actually on the chart with "Ransom". I'm a little skeptical of him only being #15 but it's too tough to judge if it's inaccurate just yet. With the Juice WRLD remix combined on Spotify he'd be #3 there so I would think he should go top 10 next week. Otherwise Katy Perry has the highest proper debut this week with "Small Talk", which looks hard pressed to match the top 10 performance of "Never Really Over", as it's severely lacking in robust sales or streams, even going top 25 looks to be an uneasy task. Tool also score the first top 100 entry of their career with "Fear Inoculum". This might be the longest song to ever appear on the ARIA Chart, as the longest I can think of are Underworld's "Born Slippy .NUXX", Oasis's "All Around The World" and RÜFÜS DU SOL's "Innerbloom" which all clock around 9.5 minutes. David Bowie's near 10 minute "Blackstar" sadly peaked at #101. There's a new #1 album this week! Slipknot score their 3rd consecutive #1 album with "We Are Not Your Kind", which easily trumps the competition with such a sales lead that it's still #1 on iTunes right now. Proving their debut to not be a fluke, The Teskey Brothers only drop 1 spot and are only narrowly behind Ed Sheeran on pure sales as well. Fleetwood Mac are currently touring the country and even though they've already got two Greatest Hits albums constantly jumping around the chart (reminder that "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" is the longest charting album of all time with 508 weeks) they've now got another one at #7. ARIA accidentally tweeted it out a day before the chart was supposed to go live but Bon Iver's 4th album enters at #8. This is a bit of a decline as their last two albums peaked at #2, which is interesting because some odd playlist help means that "Hey, Ma" is one of their best performing singles to date. But there can never be just one indie darling falling short of previous peaks. SAFIA's 2nd album debuts at #13 following the #2 debut of their first album in 2016, and Seeker Lover Keeper, the local supergroup of Sarah Blasko, Holly Throsby & Sally Seltmann debut at #14 with their second album together. Their first album was way back in 2011 and peaked at #3. There's a big boost for "A Star Is Born" & "Bohemian Rhapsody" this week, as both films have been added to Foxtel streaming, or at least they're showing a lot of ads for it. Next week I assume Ed Sheeran will be back at #1 but hey, maybe Slipknot can hold on. Alternatively King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard or Killswitch Engage could make a challenge. |

Glad that an australian artist is finally #1 on iTunes, Spotify, Aria Singles Charts etc. That doesn't happen very often ever since the streaming era took over.
+ 3 australian artists in the top 10 iTunes! |

Miley Cyrus has taken the top spot on iTunes but I'm not sure if that will last or if it really matters until her streaming picks up too. Lil Nas X's longevity means that "Old Town Road" is the only song to ever spend 20 weeks in the top 3, nothing else comes even close to that. I'm still not sure if Lil Tecca's streaming is being accurately recorded but it doesn't really matter as he's now in the top 10. So is Marshmello with his 6th top 10 hit, and Kane Brown's 1st, which puts him in very rare company as a country singer with a top 10 hit. Taylor Swift debuts at #15 with "Lover", but unlike all her other singles so far this year, won't peak on debut, as it looks set to zoom into the top 3 next week. For that matter, Taylor Swift will probably have at least a dozen songs in the top 50 next week, which might be enough to oust "Eastside" which was very unlucky to drop to #51 on Spotify, 1 spot higher and it would probably be very safe. Khalid gets yet another top 50 hit with "Right Back", thanks to the A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie remix, which I especially want to note because the song is at #41, the very same peak A Boogie has scored with "Look Back At It" and "Swervin'": everything he's gotten onto the chart to date has peaked at #41. Normani manages a top 50 debut for "Motivation" and certainly looks to climb. Of particular oddness, ARIA have finally decided to let "Only Human" onto the chart 10 weeks late, meaning it probably won't ever make the top 50. Local rapper Chillinit makes his first ever singles chart entry after his album has spent pretty much the whole year lingering just outside of the top 50 through impressive streaming figures. This is interesting to me because I cannot think of any Australian rappers who have made their debut to the chart in years, not including feature spots, the latest I can think of are Thundamentals in 2014 and Tkay Maidza in 2013. Oh and James Arthur is back for no tangible reason so I'm choosing to blame cursed Spotify algorithms as it's been slowly creeping back up for months now. Ed Sheeran is back at #1 for a 5th week with a not spectacular amount. Two thirds of his sales are now coming from streams so on pure sales he was easily beaten by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. This is King Gizz's 2nd #2 album to date, also getting there with "Flying Microtonal Banana" in early 2017, early enough that they weren't also blocked by Ed Sheeran back then. They make for a fairly loud top 4 this week, which also houses last week's #1 debut for Slipknot, and a #4 debut for Killswitch Engage's 8th album, which is their 3rd top 10 album to date and highest ever charter. Sleater-Kinney also score their first ever top 50 entry. In classic ARIA fashion we have another blunder, as Young Thug is nowhere to be seen anywhere on the chart, despite reaching #3 in New Zealand. Midweek data suggests that he will instead debut next week. Next week is also Taylor Swift's for the taking, but also we could see BROCKHAMPTON hit a new career high in the top 5 with their latest album. They're looking to also score their first ever singles chart entry with "NO HALO", and possibly "BOY BYE". |

For solo Australian female artists, this matches Gabriella Cilmi's 5 week run at the top with "Sweet About Me", and so is the longest since Merril Bainbridge's 6 week #1 run with "Mouth" back in 1995. That 6th week looks incredibly likely as yet again nothing looks within reach, and Spotify's international push means that she's getting her biggest streaming figures yet. The main tale of this week is Taylor Swift's new album. Latest single "Lover" climbs to #3 which is her 3rd top 3 hit this year, and also the entire album debuts in the top 100. This is a first for her as her streaming unavailability in the past has meant her last 2 albums have only had about half a dozen entries. A few tracks are able to buck the downward trend on this chart, and Miley Cyrus scores a top 20 hit with "Slide Away" (after "Mother's Daughter" peaked at #21), and Normani climbs into the top 40. Because of the Spotify top 50 effect basically, Benny Blanco's "Eastside" drops out of the top 50 after a 58 week run, all the way down to #58, but he'll probably be back next week like nothing ever happened. For the small handful of non-Taylor Swift debuts, 5 Seconds Of Summer score a 3rd top 50 entry in 2019 with "Teeth" which looks to keep climbing. Jorja Smith also gets her first ever chart entry with "Be Honest", and BROCKHAMPTON do the same with "NO HALO" & "SUGAR" ("BOY BYE" very narrowly missing out too). None of this is enough to oust "Shape Of You" which with 17 debuts above it, only drops 13 places to #94 in its 138th week on the chart. Taylor Swift scores her 5th #1 album with the biggest sales figures of the year so far. BROCKHAMPTON also score a new career high, following "iridescence"'s top 10 debut late last year, they're now at #3 with "Ginger". Also releasing a new album in two consecutive years is Tropical F**k Storm, whose 2nd album gives them their first top 10 at #10. I'm also highly fond of Brisbane band WAAX who've been building steam for a good 4 years now, just now putting out their debut album which debuts at #11. Another in the small list of artists I've seen live is Winterbourne who debut at #24, and I also have to remark on the belated debut of Young Thug's "So Much Fun". Given that a similar first week mistake happened to Migos' "Culture II", and only 3 songs were let on the chart on week 1 for "ASTROWORLD", every artist on "Pick Up The Phone" has now had a dumb first week error with their albums. Next week we'll see if Taylor Swift can hold on against the 13 year return of Tool, but there's also Lana Del Rey who has got to #1 with every studio album so far but might have trouble this time. There are also new releases for Tones And I, G Flip & Montaigne. This post has been edited by Dircadirca: Sep 4 2019, 06:02 AM |

This puts her on the verge of a new record as she's just one week away from Kylie Minogue's 7 week run with "Locomotion" and thus tying as the longest running #1 of all time by a solo female Australian artist. Is anyone gonna stop her? Not this week. Post Malone looks to make a big jump with "Circles" but probably just to #2, and he'll need to fight off downward 2nd week album release momentum if he wants to take the top spot. For now it matches the #5 peak of "Goodbyes" however. 5 Seconds Of Summer score their 3rd top 20 hit of 2019 with "Teeth" climbing to #17, and miraculously, strong digital sales allow the Jonas Brothers to belatedly reach the top 50 with "Only Human" even though this should have happened months ago. Lizzo already had the oldest song in the top 50 with "Truth Hurts" and now she compliments it with the even older "Good As Hell" whose post-VMAs boost was delayed due to Taylor Swift's new album, but now sees it comfortably in the top 50. Tones And I's new EP brings with it 2 of the 3 new tracks into the chart, the title track having one of the weirdest sample sources I've ever heard, coming from Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series of all things. Tool also up their game to now boast 3 top 100 chart entries. This is quite peculiar for the charts because the two new tracks, "Pneuma" and "Invincible" are both over 10 minutes long, and unlike "Fear Inoculum", were not released as singles. This makes them the first songs to ever make the singles chart while being unable to ever have been purchased as singles. This perhaps could have happened in 2016 with Kanye West's track "Famous" but that wasn't let onto the chart until it made it to iTunes. Historically, Australia loves Tool. It comes out in full force as their 5th studio album becomes their 3rd consecutive #1. While still selling well, this 'badly timed' sequence means that "Lover" only retained the top spot for its first week, whereas "Red", "1989" & "reputation" all spent multiple weeks at the top before being bumped off ("Speak Now" also spent just 1). Despite the streaming rules being disadvantageous to EPs, especially those with just the very minimum track requirement of 6, Tones And I manages a #3 debut in this busy week. As previously mentioned, bad luck befalls Lana Del Rey as despite taking the top spot in the UK, her 5th album becomes her first to miss the top spot, only reaching #4. The original Tones And I in terms of getting hyped up on her DIY heavy debut single and thus hitting tall poppy syndrome in record time from people who can only fellate themselves to Gang Of Youths, Tame Impala and wishing radio presenters would kill themselves, drummer G Flip releases her debut album and reaches the #6 position. Travis Scott's new documentary sees a big climb for "ASTROWORLD" (while "SICKO MODE" nearly re-entered the top 50), and behind him is a surprisingly high debut for Lil Tecca mainly because I'm surprised his streams were counted properly. Bon Iver's physical release brings them back to the top 20. The always delightful Montaigne reached #4 with her debut album and her second album enters at #19, while DZ Deathrays seem to be doing a Foals move and releasing their next album in two parts, only a year after their previous album entered at #4. Next week is Post Malone's for the taking, followed by Melanie Martinez & Mallrat trying to break the top 10. |

As noted last week, Tones And I has managed 7 weeks at #1 making "Dance Monkey" the equal longest running #1 hit for an Australian solo female artist. Her next major target is Justice Crew's 9 week run for the longest running Australian #1 hit on the ARIA Chart, and then 1 more week will match Daddy Cool's 10 week run for "Eagle Rock" for the longest of all time. Quite a milestone which is not impossible at this rate as nothing looks like a challenge still. Post Malone expectedly climbs to #2 with "Circles" but is slipping back on streams & sales so he can't pose a threat in the near future. "Goodbyes" also returns to its old peak of #5, but sadly "Sunflower" only climbs back to #14 and can't extend its top 10 weeks record. Post Malone's entire album debuts, which is technically his first time doing so as I believe "Jonestown (Interlude)" was excluded last time (though the similarly not very song-y song "Internet" is allowed in this time). The most interesting thing for me is that "Circles" is the only song in the top 100 to hit a new peak this week, which is a rare event. Recent collaborators DaBaby & Lil Baby both score their first top 50 hit this week except the former is not credited for some reason. The only non Post Malone debuts come from Camila Cabello, where it seems like "Liar" will be getting the push while "Shameless" is forced aside. Almost nothing of note is kicked out of the chart though "Shape Of You" does hit a new low of #95 in its 140th week on the chart. Ed Sheeran actually now has the 3 longest charting songs of all time with that, "Thinking Out Loud" & "Perfect", with "Shape Of You" still over 20 weeks away from taking the top spot from the former. Post Malone scores his 2nd #1 album naturally. "beerbongs & bentleys" has only dropped as low as #22 in its whole run and that was during the robust pure sales of Christmas, so otherwise it's never left the top 20, so this is to be expected. Melanie Martinez reached #27 with "Cry Baby" in 2015 but tended to bounce back into chart on occasion to show longevity and thus priming her for a higher peak later. I mean I can't think of any reason why her star would have faded in the interim. Nonetheless she now has a top 10 album for the first time. Mallrat on the other hand has never charted an album before, and only does so this time because the 82 second "Intro" to her new EP makes it 6 tracks long and thus eligible for the album chart, despite overall only being only slightly longer than all of Tool's 'singles' from last week. She makes the top 10 while closely missing the top 100 this week with her terrific recent single "Charlie" from it. Last week Ed Sheeran's 1st & 2nd albums left the top 100 and top 50 respectively for the first time since "Shape Of You" dropped, if you're having withdrawals, fret not because they're back. I also notice that there are 25 #1 peaking albums in the top 50 right now which I'm not sure is a record but nonetheless is startlingly high. |

We may be able to trim these qualifiers more soon, as she looks to seek further records, looking very safe for a 9th week and still nothing looking like posing a threat in the near future either. Mainly because our highest new entry this week comes in typically frontloaded fashion for Ariana Grande. "Don't Call Me Angel" enters at #4 which is her 4th top 10 hit this year, also matching the debut and peak for "Boyfriend" not long ago. Miley Cyrus was of course in the top 10 not long ago with "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart", but Lana Del Rey hasn't been seen in these parts of the singles charts since 2013, when "Young And Beautiful" reached #8 and "Summertime Sadness" reached #3. There are very few big movers on the chart, though Lizzo's "Good As Hell" takes a step up and is ready to charge into the top 20 possibly next week. Halsey enters quite a bit lower than her last two singles with "Graveyard" though it may climb from here. Because not only placement but also position on Hot Hits Australia is distressingly important, blackbear scores his first top 50 single with his misogyny leapfrogging Megan Thee Stallion's similarly titled song which hasn't had the luxury of being track 4 on said playlist (instead it's right near the bottom). Regard & Freya Ridings also score their first ever chart entries with their recent UK chart hits which both look to possibly crack the top 50 next week. Because of aforementioned Spotify playlist's adoration of Drax Project's cheesy singles, fellow NZ stalwarts Six60 score their first ever singles chart entry this week. After 4 consecutive #1 albums that lasted just a week, Post Malone has bucked the trend with a second week at the top, largely because of lack of competition. Australia's contribution to 21st century artists making me feel old is Ruel, whose latest EP enters at #3. He wasn't even born when Korn scored their two #1 albums in the late '90s. They're back with their 9th top 10 album now at #5. Breaking new ground for herself is Charli XCX who surprisingly has never had a top 50 peaking album before now, and amends that in style with "Charli" debuting at #7. I was not aware they were making similar buzz here as they were in the UK, but Mongolian throat singing extraordinaires The Hu enter at #11, just ahead of one of my favourite local MCs Sampa The Great who gets her first chart entry at #12. Next week we will see if the current contenders can hold up, with the biggest threat probably coming from blink-182. This post has been edited by Dircadirca: Sep 25 2019, 11:21 AM |
