BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Tones and I should have an easy fourth week at #1 on the singles chart. Katy Perry's new single Harleys In Hawaii contends for the Top 40, BTS & Lauv team up on Make It Right, and Sugababes return on DJ Spoony's rework of Flowers

An open race on the album chart, with James Arthur's YOU, Foals' Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 2 and Alter Bridge's Walk The Sky in contention for #1. Other new releases come from Daniel O'Donnell, Jimmy Eat World, Wretch 32, DJ Spoony, Floating Points, Battles and Caroline Polachek

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.

Jax Jones & Ella Henderson, The Script and Maroon all heading for new peak positions.
With the album sales so close, i would feel James Arthur may possible be better positioned to be the official Number 1 on Friday.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Oct 21 2019, 03:42 PM

Close in the albums

I guess whoever’s better on streaming may do better but of the two I’d say James Arthur might be the bigger fanbase act?

The entire top 5 all new entries is good to see though.

Posted by: 777666jason Oct 21 2019, 03:50 PM

Not exactly stellar sales but at least the album chart is actually a battle this week

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Oct 21 2019, 03:54 PM

Ugh, I really hope James Arthur doesn't claim the #1 album. He really needs to fade back into obscurity already.

I'd say Foals are more of a fanbase act, James Arthur is more likely to hold up throughout the week and end up being #1.

Posted by: ThePensmith Oct 21 2019, 04:01 PM

Ouch at DJ Spoony, thought the album would be doing better than that given the success Pete Tong's albums had?

Posted by: TomJ1991 Oct 21 2019, 04:03 PM

I have been doing some research into X Factor Winner's 3rd albums (for the winners who released that many). This is how they performed in their first week:

Leona Lewis' Glassheart sold 27k.
Little Mix's Get Weird sold 60k.
Joe McElderry's Classic Christmas sold 34k.
Shayne Ward's Obsession sold 22k.

I can't find information for Alexandra Burke or Matt Cardle on their Wikipedia pages, but neither album has been certified silver, so I am fairly certain they would have sold considerably less than the above four.

Who would have thought that Joe McElderry's 3rd album would have outsold Leona Lewis'? Or Shayne Ward's 3rd would outsell Alexandra's?

Posted by: pippa Oct 21 2019, 04:06 PM

Good X Factor information.
The sales climate was very different when those albums were released, Leona and Shayne sales were viewed as disappointing but Joe;s were viewed as impressive.
James Arthur will outsell the totals of all the mentioned, and should easily achieve an album with Gold selling status.

Glassheart is so underrated as an album!! Deserved so much better.

Joes album being covers probably helped that plus the Xmas exposure. Was it released fairly soon after he won popstar to opera star?
I miss the days of big sales though iirc Joes Christmas album didn’t even go top 10 bit to sell 34K is still pretty great.

Little Mix’s Get Weird is their best album too in my opinion. They had such a rare career post show like how many reality based acts peak in their fourth era!

Interesting to look at those though.

Good sales for James Arthur. Glad he’s getting some longevity

Posted by: bluebitchboy Oct 21 2019, 04:46 PM

Is selling approx 20k by the end of the week considered good for James Arthur? I don't really keep track of his career, but it appears to me his sales have nosedived.

Posted by: Bréxit Oct 21 2019, 04:48 PM

Ah, well I was very wrong about James then oops! I genuinely thought he'd left the release of this album too long and the hype would have died by now so it'd end up just being low top 5 or so. I think his sales will hold up slightly better than Foals so probably a good chance he will end up at #1. Poor brave Foals potentially coming for a fifth top 3 album (and 3rd #2) without a #1 if so. Gross at YUNGBLUD being so high up. puke.gif

Big rise for The Script this week! 'The Last Time' turning into a moderate hit for them after all despite failing to impact Spotify at all so far.

Cool to see the Floating Points album showing up so high, would be nice if that can remain top 40!

His last album did 40k first week but that was off the back of a big #1 single, the market continuing to trend downwards + the lack of as big of a hit single from this one (the last couple of tracks released from it did absolutely nothing) meant this one was obviously not going to come near that. 20k would be pretty good considering I'd say (although I don't think this will get to 20k anyway?)

His last album in 2016 sold 40k on release week, and had a huge hit single behind it. Considering the changing sales climate, and how other X Factor winners have fared with album number 3, he's done very well.

In comparison, Leona Lewis' 3rd album sold 27k in week 1, compared to 375k and 161k. That is a nosedive, my friend.

Posted by: pippa Oct 21 2019, 05:00 PM

When we consider where James Arthur was after his first album, it has done extremely well to get where he is now.
After his debut, most would have never expected a further 2 Top 2 albums from him with one of them his best seller.
This album, wont come close to the success of his last album will sell enough for him to make it to a 4th album.

Posted by: Bjork Oct 21 2019, 05:10 PM

think James Arthur will get it with barely 15k in the end, total fluke taking advantage on a week with no big releases

both JA and Foals will be lucky if Ed doesn't catch them biggrin.gif

Posted by: SmileyKylie Oct 21 2019, 05:28 PM

Nice to see Five Star still in midweek top 100 helped by its Vinyl release of Gold. Will drop out my week end but this could well sell 5k in its first month of release. Nice without any streaming

Posted by: Steve201 Oct 21 2019, 05:37 PM

DMs sales slightly down on the 27k of last weeks first mids. But with missing data it could do 80k plus again this week. Hope it gets another sales increase.

I’m sure James Arthur will get the #1 - he has already posted a video saying he’s close and asking people to download, stream etc., plus he has some signings coming up too. Wouldn’t be overly surprised if we don’t see a price reduction to boost his sales.

Posted by: SLlewellyn Oct 21 2019, 06:57 PM

Boo, thought Foals would be a bit further away from the competitor than this. I've just ended up buying 3 copies in order to get tickets to a surprise gig they are doing this week though, and it's sold out; so that's another couple of hundred sales for them easily from everyone else doing the same.

In any case, I'm off to stream the album again - can't have them losing out to #1 again, and to James Arthur no less (don't dislike him, but he's had a #1 album already!)

Joe won Popstar to Operastar in July 2011, and then released one album in August, with the Christmas album following in November...credit to them, they absolutely nailed that marketing strategy! And yeah, it sold 34k while charting at number 15 in the first week of December, which is pretty insane compared to today's numbers.

Yeah, I would agree! Usually reality acts release 1 album, then it's all downhill, but Little Mix, James and Joe managed to buck that trend.

Posted by: pippa Oct 21 2019, 09:01 PM

34k for a Number 15 debut, those sales are now seen as good if making a debut at number 1.

Posted by: Bréxit Oct 21 2019, 09:33 PM

Also just seen Dermot Kennedy's album collapsing further to #26, yikes! Meanwhile as further evidence that it's not just because 'he doesn't do well on streaming', Elbow's album is still top 10 in the mids this week despite having 5 new entries ahead of it...

Alexandra - The Truth Is: 3,136 first week sales.

The album was rushed post Strictly Come Dancing. A shame as Alexandra (still) has so much potential as a recording artist.

Posted by: ___∆___ Oct 22 2019, 06:30 PM

He seems to on Spotify but on Apple Music he does not bad. His Essentials Playlist on Apple Music is usually always around top 50 just behind the likes of Oasis, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay on their playlist chart and his album is top 5.

Love that there is an actual chart battle - James had a signing at HMV today and put signed CDs on his website which have sold out, Foals have restocked the picture disc vinyl on their website and added thank you notes to them plus signed CDs etc.,

Presuming you mean James?

James closing the gap by about 400 in 2 days, at that rate he will be ahead on Friday but only just. I'm not sure who I'm even supporting in this battle, I'd like Foals to have a #1 album but I'm not really feeling their 2019 output much, I like 'Empty Space' more than I like any 2019 Foals song so I actually wouldn't mind James getting there laugh.gif

Hope Lizzo can keep top 20 with 'Good As Hell'!

How many of these 'Gold' compilations are being churned out lmao? It's the same label doing all of them as well.

I think if i added correctly 21 already though the first few were labelled as The Gold Collection

It is a close battle for Number 1 album, both have underwhelming sales which is disappointing.
I would welcome Maroon 5 to make the Top 10 and The Script to hold their Top 40 position.

Blackbear has climbed 1 place and I'm ready for this.

Foals have announced a show at Banquet Records (1,000 capacity) - ‘tickets’ went on sale at 9.30 and buy a CD or Vinyl gets you entry, good move from them!

thats a smart one I never heard before

DM should do at least 78-80k again with missing data & two more days sales. Good to see The Script continue to rise!

Keep going Foals! Ed should easily make no3 at least.

I'd love the script to stay top 40, streaming is really working against them but its doing considering.

Could Dance Monkey survive at Number 1 on ACR?

It would have been #1 even on ACR last week but presumably by the time it goes to ACR something will be sufficiently close that that would no longer be the case.

It will be interesting to see if a song ever manages - that would be true popularity! Hopefully the first won't be a Christmas song...

It has happened already ('Despacito' did it more than once I believe, and 'Three Lions' defying the 3 year rule ofc).

So it would! By a margin of 191 copies, but still...
Looking back, this was last true for 7 Rings in its opening week, and also for Sweet But Psycho the week before.
