Reviving this thread to discuss what songs or albums from the Madge that you're currently loving, rediscovering, have on repeat etc.
I've been ever so slightly obsessed with Devil Wouldn't Recognise You recently.
An easy highlight off Hard Candy if only for the instrumental when it all kicks in. Absolutely stunning
You'll see and This used to be my playground are my most listened songs in the past few weeks, so underrated
Interesting choices guys.
Gang Bang & Like A Virgin (MDNA Tour Versions)
It's been really hard not to think about the tour since its been talked about for ages and is the next big release. The reason I've been playing Gang Bang is I met this guy he told me he was single and a few dates later he told me he already had a boyfriend so I was gutted but oh well that's life so I wanted a good revenge song. Like A Virgin being sung over Evgeni's Waltz is so stunning and haunting I love it can't stop playing it.
Ugh how annoying! Well Gang Bang is like the ultimate revenge song, so it makes sense listening to it on repeat now ha! It should SO become a Bond villain theme tune or something in the future
Good idea, really wish she made a video for it.
4 Minutes
In my top 3 Madge songs tbh, this is what made me become a massive fan.
Just Confessions On A Dancefloor, but i didn't give it much attention.
Well all the buzz was around that before the Hard Candy era.
Flawless.
I'm loving give it to me ATM
Came on the radio as my alarm went off a few mornings ago. Glorious way to start the day
Always got overshadowed by the two surrounding tracks on the album, but been loving this LOADS recently <3
Flawless start to an album.
Get Together is a brilliant song I love the confessions tour version not that it's much different but the whole "get together" remixed repeatedly bit is excellent Stuart done well there.
Myself I'm loving She's Not Me at the moment.
I've been listening to nothing but Madonna on my holiday - MDNA, Celebration and Confessions. The latter is easily her best album, not even a "just good" song (yes, I actually like 'I Love New York'!). I suppose my least favourite from the album is 'Future Lovers'. I agree with Haus that 'Get Together' is very over-looked, by myself too although after listening to it so much, I think it's in fact very high in terms of my ranking of Madonna singles! 'Hung Up' and 'Sorry' are certainly in my Top 5, perfect songs, can't fault them at all!
Have been playing Madge non-stop for the past month or so. Particularly the Ray of Light - Music - American Life - Confessions era which coincidentally make up my top four albums from her.
This in particular, has struck me recently:
In one of her most abrasive albums, this stands out as her at her most tender The lyrics are genius.
Got a little closer~ to a guy last night through the power of Madonna. He remembered me from a previous night out because i lectured him about Madonna for a while and i went on to do the same last night too i don't remember doing it the first time but i said that that definitely sounds like me
Anyway i have had 'Oh Father' in my head all morning. So achingly beautiful
Haus Dating Tip #1: stock up on your Madonna facts!
Absolutely adore 'Oh Father', I think anyone could identify their own experiences with its lyrics, even if it doesn't match the song's actual meaning.
Had a little boogie to Benny Benassi's mix of 'Celebration' last night when it surprisingly came on the TV! Sounded so good but I don't think anyone else took much notice.
Love Don't Here Anymore
Utter gorgeousness.
Great song !!.
I've been playing Take a Bow a lot recently.
Madonna's vocal on this is beautiful. I love M's ballads but is one in particular has such sweet sounding vocal mixed with the harmonies.
Plus I love Babyface.
Papa Don't Preach is my all time favourite song. I listen to it almost every day.
Frozen. Maybe it's not her best vocally, but the music is perfection I always get goosebumps listening to it
I am REALLY getting into 'Music' (album) this past week. I previously just used it for the singles, 'Impressive Instant' and 'Runaway Lover', but there are so many other gems creeping up on me now. She really should have released more as singles.
The biggest one to hit me is 'I Deserve It'. The fact it comes after the stupendous duo of 'Impressive Instant' and 'Runaway Lover' (two of her very best album tracks) makes that a complete 11/10 trio run.
Glad to hear you're enjoying it! I went through a period last year where I was obsessed with the album too - I used to just pass it off as an album where she experimented a bit too much with auto-tune but it's so much more than that. 'I Deserve It' became one of my favourites too, along with 'Paradise' and 'Gone' - really intimate moments and they're stripped back enough to pay attention to the lyrics. I think Music now holds a place in my Top 5 Madonna albums.
It's climbing up for me too. Will never be able to touch my holy trinity of 'Confessions...', 'Ray of Light' and 'True Blue' but it's top 5 for me too i think. I'm not keen on 'Paradise', it's a tad TOO jarring and i need to be in the right mood for it, but everything else is sublime. As an album it's very cohesive.
Yeah, Confessions and Ray of Light remain untouchable for me too. I'd probably Like a Prayer in my Top 5 but haven't decided what could complete it!
I agree about being in the right mood for 'Paradise' but I find myself in that mood a lot anyway! Sounds particularly good when chilling on a night.
I've also become a bigger fan of Music over the last few months. Paradise is something I have to be in the right mood for, although the Confessions version was amazing. I'm with you Bal, I Deserve It is absolutely gorgeous, one of my favourite M album tracks.
I also think Don't Tell Me is her most underrated big hit single from the post-RoL era. Those guitar chords hook me instantly.
Isaac
*.* I adore this song so much. Easily in my top 5 Madge songs. Having a Confessions sesh, actually forgot how much I adored it back when it came out, could well
rise up the ranks and overtake MDNA soon enough for me.
I got the impression you didn't like Confessions but I'm glad to be proven wrong! 'Isaac' is perhaps my favourite non-single from the album (tussle between that and 'Let It Will Be') although I don't think I always liked it. I seem to remember be put off by the foreign vocals (Wiki tells me this is Yemenite language) I've grown to appreciate them and the song is perfection musically; I particularly like that drop around the 4:40 mark.
I like it, but I find it overrated people seem to hail it as her very best, much like Ray Of Light, only COADF is a better album.
That album is truly magical, it will always have special memories attached for me. I remember buying it during my lunch break on its release day and essentially outing myself to my entire college class.
I never liked 'Isaac' though.
I just stole my Mum's copy of it the first Madonna album I bought myself was Hard Candy. I remember feeling a bit odd about going up to pay for it
Edit: *.* How High too, omg. LOVE.
One of her darkest songs, lyrically, but somehow she makes it insanely infectious, joyous and uplifting. A song i always enjoy when hearing, but have only *just* put it on my essential Madge playlist. A real gem <3
It is surprising how well the contrast of lyrics and melody work. I suppose it could have been done so that there weren't too many down-tempos/ballads, although I could imagine this would sound very poignant as a down-tempo track. Pity, can't find any demos lurking about on the web.
I've been listening to MDNA recently and it's actually a lot better than I give it credit for. I love the opening three tracks - all strong, club anthems (the chorus to 'Girl Gone Wild' could be stronger, mind) and express the album's intention of music to make you want to dance. The production for 'Turn Up the Radio' is good and it does make me want to sing along, just it's not really strong enough to be a single. That latter comment is especially relevant to 'Give Me All Your Luvin''; I do find it catchy but it would probably have been best left on the cutting room floor. I've never taken much notice of 'Falling Free' before but I'm quite liking it now. You can hear William Orbit influence on it; rather Ray of Light throwback. 'Beautiful Killer' is far too good to be left off the main list - in fact, I wouldn't say no to it being a single - and the same goes for 'Best Friend' which, like 'Falling Free', I've only just started to appreciate. Really honest song about her divorce from Guy; shame the production lets it down slightly.
01 Masterpiece
02 Gang Bang
03 I'm Addicted
04 Beautiful Killer
05 Girl Gone Wild
06 Some Girls
07 I Don't Give A
08 Love Spent
09 Best Friend
10 Falling Free
11 Turn Up the Radio
-
12 B'Day Song
13 Give Me All Your Luvin'
14 I f***ed Up
15 I'm a Sinner
16 Superstar
Songs below the dash are ones I'd scrap. I have a big soft spot for 'B'Day Song' but, let's face it, they were smoking something to record it and stick it on the album!
I f***ed Up and Superstar are two of her best songs though
Regina! I was counting on you to approve of my MDNA session!
'MDNA' has become one of my favourite albums from her now (which is a shock even to ME given how much i used to berate it!). It's utterly insatiable and the highlights, of which there are many, have so much replay value. There some complete shockers (mainly 'B-Day Song') but the quality of the rest of it makes up for those moments. It's nowhere near as cohesive as her other albums, but i enjoy it for those fab moments and discard the rest.
'I Fucked Up' is criminally low there. Such a beautiful song.
I think the intentions are there with 'I f***ed Up' but it just doesn't do anything for me.
Looking at the songs which I'd keep on the album, MDNA would be a strong album. I can't say if it would be one of my favourites as I have no clue what the order is outside of my Top 4. I just think the album feels unjointed with the mediocre songs in the middle. There's club bangers at the beginning and ballads at the end; there isn't that transition, no journey. I think 'Love Spent' would do that well if it were placed at the centre, or perhaps a little later to make room for a couple more tracks on a similar vein to 'I'm Addicted' before it, at the expense of 'Turn Up the Radio' if needs be.
It's probably better to be disheartened by a bad album than be annoyed at an album that could be really good if the right choices were made. MDNA is the latter.
I am utterly obsessed with 'Bedtime Story' right now. I have always found it to be the clear strongest song from its parent album, but it's the latest song to properly hit me from her away from any album. The song is sensational and really rallies me up whenever i need it to and the video is one of her best. The song and video package TOGETHER is just everything. Obviously, musically it's very experimental but listening to the lyrics closely recently has made me fall in love with it properly.
I saw that you'd changed your avatar Bal, yay! Bedtime Stories remains her best album for me, from start to finish it's all just so relaxing and sultry. I think Human Nature is my favourite track though.
After listening to Bedtime Stories the album a lot over the New Year, this title track had particularly grown on me. It is undeniably a brave creation, especially to release it as a single, and I do kind of like what the song is getting at (I'm starting to see it as an attempt to relax, forgetting all human creation, and letting your mind travel and find the answers itself). However, there is something a little too weird for my liking, nor do I really understand the video, although I do like the blonde Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter esque look!
The remaining three singles from the album are all individually excellent yet underrated, although I suppose 'Human Nature' has been getting some exposure since THAT kiss!!
Incredibly brave to release it as a single! It's way beyond its time and as you rightly put, deals with such huge issues. I don't know if i even relate to the lyrics or what she is saying, but they are so unearthly, powerful and unsettling that i can't help but stop what i am doing and just listen to the song.
It's one of my favourite album covers too, along with True Blue, I loved reading up on why there are all different flipped versions of it and stuff.
Also, I adore the colour of the side bit on the physical CD, it looks so nice on my shelf *-*
I've been watching the Drowned World Tour and it's been fantastic viewing with some pretty strong vocals. Two songs in particular have stuck out for me: 'Impressive Instant' and 'Human Nature'.
A wacky song matched by a wacky performance - I love how kids tent tunnels have been added! Highlight is definitely smoke machine blasting between her legs in the "dance to a samba" part up to the loud autotune noise.
Also sounds good if the speed is turned up a notch.
This song has shot up my ranking of Madonna singles this year and this performance is my favourite I've seen. Highlight is the rocking cow scene - she looks HOT and the voice effect on "did I say something wrong?" is somehow utterly perfect.
I have been listening to Isaac a lot recently!!! What a total grower !
Bring the heaven and the stars down to earth for me !!!
Big highlight from Confessions! Glad it's been growing on you - I think at one point I wasn't too sure about it but then it really hit me big time. That mini drop at 4:44-4:48 is soooo good.
I have good news for Johnkm and other fans - Erotica has finally clicked with me!
Erotica Rank
01. Deeper and Deeper
02. Bad Girl
03. Rain
04. In This Life
05. Erotica
06. Waiting
07. Where Life Begins
08. Fever
09. Thief of Hearts
10. Bye Bye Baby
11. Words
12. Why's It So Hard
13. Secret Garden
Was really hard to compile that list because the album, in the same way as her debut album, is so consistent in sound and quality. Honestly no bad songs on the list so even those that missed the Top 10 have something special about them. I found that reading the lyrics in the booklet whilst the songs played really allowed me to appreciate the album for what it is. 'Where Life Begins' is actually really funny with its endless innuendos and 'Words' is like a lyrical prologue to 'Bedtime Story'. 'Rain', although one of my favourites, sticks out like a sore thumb on this album in terms of sound - 'Bad Girl' and 'Deeper and Deeper' to an extent to, but the former sounds similar to 'In This Life' at parts and the latter is essential to the album. Speaking of 'In This Life', I'll probably rank it higher in time because reading the first two verse really moved me.
After appreciating the lyrics, I was then able to enjoy the subtlety of the music. In a lot of tracks, it sounded similar to the music you associate with late night jazz bars, which suits the theme of the album rather well.
So yeah, really liking it and probably already prefer it to Bedtime Stories which had clicked early in the year.
You have seriously underrated whys it so hard ?
1. Deeper and Deeper
2. Erotica
3. Rain
4. Why's It So Hard?
5. Words
6. Bad Girl
7. In This Life
8. Waiting
9. Where Life Begins
10. Thief of hearts
11. Fever
Only songs i don't really like are :
12. Bye Bye Baby
13. Secret Garden
I do still like it and think it has a great message, it just feels too simplistic in comparison to the rest, I guess. That order is probably going to change a lot anyway!
We put 'Like a Prayer' on the jukebox when I went out for my birthday last night and it was a real joyous moment as the pub all clapped, danced and/or sang along.
Exactly what the song is designed to do.
I was in a straight student bar bout two weeks ago, like a prayer was played and everyone knew it, was singing to it and was loving it !! It really is a song that appeals to anyone
Have always liked this, but it's just SHOT up in my affections this weekend. From that ghostly "you can call me M tonight" to that stunning instrumentation in the chorus, a totally mesmerising, atmospheric beauty with lovely lyrics.
That's awful though.
You think the same of 'Hung Up' so...
Best night is one of my faves from rebel heart
Hung Up is like a 5.
I'm still not hugely in love with it, but the tour has made me really appreciate 'Holiday' a lot more! I don't return to much of the debut album (apart from 'Borderline' of course) but this is totally timeless music <3
Listening to Like A Prayer at the moment, still absolutely incredible and the best thing she has ever done
Such an epic and fantastic pop song which really is one of the best of all time
Gave 'American Life' a listen earlier, despite the negativity it sometimes gets I will argue in its defense. The harsh facade that the opening songs give are quickly dismissed with the incredible ballads on it. 'Love Profusion', 'Intervention' and 'Nothing Fails' are just sensational and I much prefer that side of the album to the (albeit very fun) IN-YOUR-FACE stuff. Overall it's a very solid album imo <3
It's her third favourite album for me, such interesting production throughout. I think Hollywood is probably my favourite track though!
Everyone knows by now American Life is my favourite Madonna album and probably in my top 5 all time faves too. The way she combined electronic and acoustic songs
while still make it flow well is a work of magic. Intervention remains her best song too.
Effortlessly uplifting and joyous. I don't go back to the album as a whole much compared to some of her other albums but the highlights off it are so good. Also a Rebel Heart Tour highlight for me impossible to NOT smile when listening to it.
Love the random Spanish guitar solo in the middle of a house/dance track! This is a much needed uplifting moment on its parent album; nice to see it getting some recognition on tour.
I heard 'Music' on the radio on the way back from work...dare I say it but this could actually be among my favourite Madonna singles.
Just been playing 'Hard Candy' which while ranking in my bottom 3 albums from her (possible 2nd bottom) is actually full of a fair amount of GOODNESS proving that even her weakest efforts in comparison are still passable.
Let me try and rank the album ~
AMAZE
01. Devil Wouldn't Recognize You
V GOOD
02. Miles Away
03. 4 Minutes
04. Give It 2 Me
GOOD
05. She's Not Me
06. Incredible (please don't judge me)
07. Candy Shop
08. Voices (I feel in time this could be a big grower on me but I have never really given it the chance)
Nah
09. Heartbeat
10. Beat Goes On
11. Dance 2night
12. Spanish Lesson
Heartbeat, Dance 2nigt and Spanish Lesson are all 9/10 moments though
I can maybe, possibly accept some people enjoying the first two to some capacity but NOT Spanish Lesson, never. The album is solid, but it has some horrid moments on it from me and was the first album in her career that was so hit and miss.
Hard Candy is horrid BUT the real terror in her discography is MDNA. It houses her worst Vocals ever(incredible) and the production is abysmal.
Even Spotify agrees because it doesn't even have it.
Hard Candy is not only the worst Madonna album, but one of the worst albums I've ever heard by anyone. They chose the singles really well, 'Devil Wouldn't Recognise You' is also good and that's it. Maybe 'Beat Goes On' at a push if I'm severely intoxicated, most of the rest is unbearable and embarrassing.
So it is Replace that with Superstar.
MADONNA ALBUM RANK
1. Erotica
2. Confessions On A Dancefloor
3. Like A Prayer
4. Ray Of Light
5. American Life
6. Music
7. Bedtime Stories
8. Madonna
9. True Blue
10. Rebel Heart
11. Like A Virgin
12. Hard Candy
13. MDNA
The top 5 are all 10/10. Music to True Blue are 9s Rebel Heart is a 7 and the rest dont go above a 5.
Also, why does my mums copy of True Blue have The title and her name on it? I always thought it was just her doing that iconic pose.
Maybe it's a regional thing?
I don't think she has ever done a bad cover album in her career so that would tough.
f***ing hell how did i forget HARD CANDY!?!? she looks like a cross between the crypt keeper and Skeletor on that one.
Yeah.. people can love or hate the music on it but does ANYONE like that 'Hard Candy' album cover?
The album cover is hideous !!
How her team and her decided that it was sufficient !! It's really horrid.
She should have gone for her original concept. She was going to do The Black Madonna but the label stopped her.
People always look at me weird when i say Erotica is my favourite Madonna album. Is it really that unpopular?
Everything about Hard Candy is flawless.
1. American Life
2. Hard Candy
3. Rebel Heart
4. MDNA
5. Erotica
6. Music
7. Confessions On A Dancefloor
8. Bedtime Stories
9. True Blue
10. Like A Prayer
11. Madonna
12. Ray Of Light
13. Like A Virgin
I .... just don't know
^ !
I should probably try and rank the albums but it seems like too gigantic a task right now :') All I know is that 'Confessions...' is firmly #1 (my #1 album from any artist ever) and 'Ray of Light' would be second. So those two are TOO LOW on Regina's list
Although we might agree on our least favourite albums (although actually 'Bedtime Stories <<<')
This MDNA love
idk if the original Celebration was a single but this remix
....is diabolical.
Celebration is horrid in any form.
First time hearing that remix and it's not bad ;o The original AND Benny Benassi remix are both incredible though. Her final ever smidgen of chart success perhaps?
I have listened to Madonna 111 times in the last 22 hours or so! Stanning over her so badly today, she really is incredible
I've always quite liked this but this has hit me so badly today! The chorus is incredible
The iconic guitar riff at the start and one of her shining moments *.*
Listening to this now and still my favourite Madge track, so so incredible :Heart
Fantastic picks UV! It's fab to see you're big turnaround this past week and those play counts being so high *.* Keep going, songs still hit me to this day - she has so much on offer and a lot of it sinks in over time <3
Inside Of Me.
Is it about anal sex? or is it about her dead mother? I can never tell
First 'Rain' and now this, you have such a way of tainting her most beautiful songs!
I always thought it was quite obvious with Rain IOM seems a lot more ambiguous.
Behave !!
I think we need a 'Toby Interprets Madonna Songs' thread
I was aware of the metaphor but you lodged it in the forefront of my mind again whenever I listen to it!
I think we just need to get Toby laid, since the ones who talk the most about sex are the ones not getting any.
Hung Up was playing in the background when I went out to eat tonight, sounded incredible as usual
Madonna humping the stage at the first VMAs will never not be amazing. It could so easily have ended her but it did just the opposite*.*
I'm gradually turning lotti into a stan
YES! Do it Her rate was fab iirc so shouldn't take much to push her into STAN territory *.*
A 4 for You'll See proves she does
omg i already am judging my own rate. why was i so harsh??
toby made me a playlist of her ballads and i am SO SLAYED
I may have found a another meaning to Jimmy Jimmy.
I don't particularly rate that song, so it's not at risk of being ruined, so fire away!
My daddy says you need a good lickin''
Music album today !!
Lmao Toby :') that is so obvious but still so wrong.
Heard Express Yourself when I was out in town last week, sounded incredible and forgot how good it was
(And Pure Shores played straight after also )
That's probably one of Madonna's classics I feel I've not fully appreciated yet, but I imagine hearing that out would change everything.
('Pure Shores' is a big favourite of mine too; William Orbit delivering the goods yet again!).
Really loving Lucky Star at the moment!
'Lucky Star' I have been loving a fair bit recently too, but moreso the absolutely SPELL-BINDING LuckyStar/HungUp mashup at the Confessions Tour. That entire ~14 minute run is just out of this world, spectacular
I'm sad because 'Hung Up' came on in a club just as I left to go home.
Aw!
Girl Gone Wild came on for me last night *.* snapchat soon found out ~
As wet and feeble as that song is, I imagine I'd be incredibly fickle and go mad for it if I heard it on a night out.
Yeah most people that know it go bonkers for it. I was with Leww off this site who is a big Madonna fan and his mate so we had a crazy moment together
It's probably the song I hear most when clubbing (it's a bit of a gay club staple and is played alarmingly often !).
In Dubai airport (about a third of a way through my 25 hour journey ) and they're playing 'Into the Groove' M getting that Dubai dollar ~
A perfect song to put you in better spirits for a while on what sounds like an agonising journey! Hope it's worth it when you get there though, have fun!
'Like a Prayer' was played on my birthday night out at the weekend. I simply cannot begin to justifiably describe the atmosphere that song created but I remember seeing everyone's hands right up in the air and screaming the lyrics out at the top of their voices. I don't think there's anyone who couldn't enjoy this song when it is brought to such life as that.
Can we take a minute to appreciate the guy who played the villain playing air guitar on the stabbed woman's leg at the very end of the video? I've only just noticed it!
I think I've heard it a couple of times while out and it was exactly how you described it. A complete moment of music euphoria. <3
Me against the music
Not Joe bringing the MATM debate into this forum too
It's OK at best for me~
The only bit of MATM i like is when Madge reminds Britney of her existence and Brit just goes''yeah''
'Til Death Do Us Part
When I did my top Madge songs countdown a year or so ago, this was originally about 12th but ended up claiming 4th (I think?) by the time I'd finished listening to them all so often... and since then I've just continued to listen to it so often that it's rapidly climbing my most listened to Madge tracks ever, it's just sublime and would definitely be top 2 now.
^ a lovely, lovely song completely dark but presented in such a joyous way. Really confusing emotions throughout and not one i'd expect you to necessarily love but wow at how much you do!
Listening to it now, it's such a powerful, beautiful song <3
Sky Fits Heaven probably has the best instrumentation of any Madonna track lyrically perfect too.
Tbh, I think I could quite happily listen through an album of Ray of Light instrumentals. They have such complexity to make them unique and special, but a simplicity to prevent them from being too overbearing. William Orbit is legit one of the best producers, even for just his work on this album alone.
Shame about the background vocals, but the I love the "travelling down their own road" part of the instrumental.
I've been obsessed with this mash-up of 'Living for Love' and 'What is Love?' again recently:
Fits so well together, both in sound and lyrics. I adore the chorus; so euphoric!
That works so well !!!
It does! I always thought it sounded very 90s and the way it fits so effortlessly into an actual 90s dance classic just confirms that.
There's also a 'Beat It' vs. 'Bitch I'm Madonna' mash up that I really like too.
POWERHOUSE
I don't like her momdonna look in that video.
More like Marilyndonna!
I saw the New Year in by singing to 'Like a Virgin' in a packed club last night (where everyone, whether they liked it or admitted to it, knew all the words).
Needless to say it was the peak of the night.
I'm listening to I'm Breathless for the first time ever and its actually quite good? Sooner or Later would have been a smash if given the chance.
And of course HANKY PANKY*.* what a bop
Meh. And Hanky Panky is turd.
obvs not getting any hanky panky x
! Bitch I get my share ()
I don't think I've listened to I'm Breathless in its entirety, but 'Sooner or Later' is definitely the best from what I've heard ('Vogue' aside, of course) - more specifically the performance she delivered at the Oscars 1991:
Adore the vocals, the movement, the look, the naughtiness. Perfect.
Also, everyone secretly loves a bit of 'Hanky Panky'.
Rhyming 'panky' and 'spanky' is poetic genius.
Messiah
Two years on, this has properly clicked for me! Pretty beautiful stuff.
That's definitely one that has held up the best for me. A really graceful ballad that feels like it takes influence from the Like a Prayer ballads and adds a modern twist. I like the way it precedes the song 'Rebel Heart' - they may not fade into each other but they work together just as well - as you're feeling all melancholy from 'Messiah' and its outro, the guitars of the title track kick in, but it's not too upbeat to feel like a jolty change in tempo; everything is measured just right.
Messiah is lovely.
I've just listened to all the Rebel Heart demos (those whose final edits made the tracking list, at least). With the exception of the title track which I prefer, I think she made the right decision to alter them, although I do like what she did originally did with 'Devil Pray', 'Illuminati', 'Inside Out', 'Wash All Over Me' and 'Best Night'. I think the demo of 'Illuminati' will be preferred by a lot of people, but I think the more urban, harder sound works better with the lyrical content.
La Isla Bonita playing in my local! Such a feel good classic, never fails to make me happy.
Another Madonna song encounter last night - this time 'Causing a Commotion' and it was probably the first time I've heard it anywhere other than when I've played it myself. Not a song I've really ever took notice of but, hearing it last night and especially after hearing the Bright Light Bright Light cover, it's actually a slice of simple, joyful 80s pop greatness. Solid hook and I love the middle 8.
They played 'Ray of Light' while I was out last night. Unfortunately I was otherwise occupied with someone in the smoking area so I could only listen from afar and not dance to it
Smoking Area tactic hey
Haha yeah! Although this was a guy I have been acquaintances for a while, and have slowly drifted away from unfortunately Saturday night was a good re-bonding session for us though so we're still cool ~
I freak out whenever Madonna is played in a club, I think I just heard this too late into it to warrant a trip inside to dance!
Waiting. I love the Justify My Love sample! I love Erotica, it's so underrated The hip hop sound really suited her tbh.
Bal, 'Ray of Light' is my #1 Madge song that I want to hear on a night out (yes, even ahead of 'Hung Up') and you're telling me you IGNORED its calling?! I need to educate you.
Because of the sun I have been listening to La Is La Bonita quite abit .
There's so many live versions too
Im listening to the Erotica album. My favourite Madge album and in my top 5 ever*.*
Holiday as summer has truly arrived.
I was supposed to post this the other day but 'La Isla Bonita' came on in Buddies (an American diner type restaurant, I was there third-wheeling my bro and his girlfriend ) and sounded so good! One of my favourite Madge songs to hear in the summer
Appreciation for 'La Isla Bonita' seems to be quite noticeable as we hit nicer weather. It's a great song in its own right but it's only elevated by the summer.
Veni Vidi Vici
Still love this! Wish she performed it on the Rebel Heart Tour
I need a new Madonna album
I quite like it too. On an album of so many songs, it's not one of my top favourites, but I definitely think it is a good blend of stepping into the hip-hop world and still being true to Madonna. It seemed she embraces nostalgia and her past with the Rebel Heart era and I think she captured that well with her spoken, slight-rap verses.
I'm going through a burning up phase .
'Veni Vidi Vici' is such a bop and would've been explosive on tour - not sure why it wasn't included, it fit the theme perfectly! I guess the 'Rebel Heart' (song) montage did it well though~
La Isla Bonita from Sticky & Sweet.
I love how she mixed in Latte *.*
for what seems to be the 78th time I'm trying (really f***ing hard) to get through Hard Candy. Candy Shop remains a career low and the rest just blends into one horrible blob of shit.
Hard Candy >>>>> Confessions
And Candy Shop is one of her best songs ever.
You not even a fan of 'Give It 2 Me' or 'Devil Wouldn't Recognise You'?
I forgot about GI2M but I stand by the rest
'Devil Wouldn't Recognise You' though..
'Devil' is to Hard Candy is what 'Ghosttown' is to Rebel Heart - an absolutely perfect example that Madonna still has that ability to create a song that makes you sit back and think "WOW!". Obviously there's been plenty of great moments in her recent discography, but these two have what it takes to be modern day Madonna classics.
X-Static Process
WHY has it taken me this long to fully appreciate American Life, what is wrong with me!?
'X-Static Process' is a beauty and Madonna always gave 110% when she sang it live at the time, however I do tend to find it ranks near the bottom of my American Life rank. A great deal of that is down to the album being perhaps Madonna's most consistent and closely-scoring, but the other songs also have something slightly more going for them or rather something that impacts me more.
'Intervention', 'Mother and Father' and 'Easy Ride' are some of the standout tracks for me. Her rendition of the former on the Tears of a Clown mini-tour really tugged at my heartstrings, especially what with everything that was going on between her and Rocco at the time.
Mer Girl. Took me a long time to get into this but wow
Now Sky Fits Heaven ROL is on repeat today
See the choir put me off 'Nothing Fails' for a while. I've since got back into it big time but I'd still prefer the choir not to be there, or at least for them to tone it down a bit. It's not like 'Like a Prayer' where the choir enhances the joyful mood and the rest of the production is so full on too.
I've had Ray of Light playing in my car recently - 'Sky Fits Heaven' is definitely a good 'un!
Miles Away is quite possibly one of her most underrated singles. I adore it, the lyrics are captivating.
I meant ballads, but singles works as well.
I think it could be other Liam's very favourite Madonna songs, or at least one of them.
It's generally quite underrated though. I do enjoy it myself, particularly the album version where it starts to fade out at the end whilst she's singing "so far away".
White Heat
B. O. P. A music video for this would've slayed
Yeah, I could imagine a video would be quite fab. The song itself is pretty catchy but I wouldn't say it was single material, especially compared to what were chosen as singles, so in that sense it's not much of missed opportunity. Not like how 'Gang Bang' should have had a video.
Hmm White Heat is one of the weaker moments on an otherwise flawless album. I enjoy it but it doesn't hold a flame to some of the other highs on the album. The True Blue era never fails to make me happy <3
Tbh none of the True Blue album tracks come close to the quality of the singles, I don't think.
They're all catchy bops but all rather throwaway when you compare them to the singles which are game changers of pop music.
True Blue is like a 6/10 on a good day
I love every song on TB
I experienced 'Vogue' on a night out for the first time last night and it's safe to say it can join 'Gimme More' for bringing out the inner camp in EVERYONE.
And 'Holiday' played last night! Gets a bit overexposed on tour but it's still such a feel-good, sing-along tune. That intro!
Time Stood Still
SUCH an underrated gem
Is it bad that I've not heard this until now?
Yes. VERY BAD.
Well I've educated myself and it is indeed gorgeous.
I just bought the Like A Virgin album and so giving it a spin. LOVE it.
Just need True Blue and Bedtime Stories then I'll have all her studio albums
My favourite Madonna song 'Frozen' is being used on Dancing On Ice right now to accompany Donna Air's routine
#95 on UK iTunes!
A singer also murdered frozen on the voice .
But was only shown for a couple of seconds .
Bad Girl, since remembering the #madonnagate moment when a Victoria Beckham fan tried to pass off a grainy copy of it as her next single
Really good song - got it on repeat
I'm listening to I'm A Sinner. Not a fan of the MDNA album but it has some great stand out moments Gang bang, I'm a sinner, Love spent, Masterpiece!
Well Crazy for You, a very lovely song was on the BBC 4 TOTP re runs recently (it has reached 1985 on it) but she was in America touring at the time I think the presenter said, so there was no live performance, sadly, just the video.
If I'm not mistaken, Madonna only appeared on TOTP three times?
Holiday
Like A Virgin
Youll See
Music
Don’t Tell Me
Borderline was featured on re release but with the crowd dancing . Many madonna lookalikes.
Living for love
I'm listening to Body Shop, it is a cute track
Changes all the time but currently relistening to some of the Mirwais stuff and rediscovering I deserve this and Easy Ride and Gone.
And Paradise (not for me)
Heartbeat, Miles Away and Masterpiece.
Had ray of light the album on play today, gave power of goodbye a few plays.
Heard the LMFAO remix of Give Me All Your Luvin' last night and I am unashamed to say I loved every moment of it.
This is a BOP! Love those sax(?) moments! To think it was scrapped for 'Fever'!
Been playing the Confessions Tour Live soundtrack a lot this week. So many moments throughout it. Obviously the Lucky Star/Hung Up flow, but also love the live version of Get Together and the haunting Isaac. Erotica too *.*
I am really into 'im going to tell you a secret' right now!!!
Where do people stand on the MDNA Tour? I just can't get into it. Bad vocals and style over substance.
I do appreciate the MDNA tour the more I watch it.
The beginning is particularly good .
After LAP I think it’s strange to then go into I’m addicted and I’m a sinner.
The open your heart performance and the vogue performance are KILLER . I listen to the live version of revolver a lot due to ‘dont f*** with the queen’!!
Been ages since I listened to the album in full but the Revolver performance is fun ~
There are some good moments throughout but overall I feel there's a lack of what makes Madonna tours so special. Kind of hard to specify what that is exactly but I know I didn't come away from watching the MDNA Tour with the same feelings I did from watching Confessions or S&S for instance. I found the parts that were meant to be seen as highlights like 'Girl Gone Wild'/'Revolver'/'Gang Bang' and the 'Like a Virgin'/'Love Spent'/'Evgeni's Waltz' sections just not doing much for me, whereas the small 'Papa Don't Preach' verse and all the interludes gave me more satisfaction. I did like 'Express Yourself' and thought the inclusion of 'Born This Way' and 'She's Not Me' was clever and funny, 'Masterpiece' was a tender moment with lots of heart and humanity and 'Vogue' was pretty glam, although fell short of placing among my favourite performances of that song. The only killer moment for me would be 'Celebration' which had lots of energy and great dancing.
The editing of the tour DVD is pretty shoddy; too much frantic camera movement and not enough focusing on the actual performances.
I’m a very late Madonna listener. Ghosttown go me into her!
Ghosttown is one of her best!!!
If you like ghosttown listen to the album it came from Rebel Heart. Devil Peay and Joan Of Arc are other highlights.
Then try ray of light and confessions.
I’ve got the rebel heart album. Really enjoyed it 😊
I have been playing and replaying the Music album so much recently.
- I Deserve It is one of her best
- Always been a fan of Don't Tell Me but recently it's shot up massively for me and I get so much life from it
- The double punch of Impressive Instant and Runaway Lover *.*
- Amazing and Gone are cute
- Paradise (Not For Me).. I still don't fully love.. not for me ~
- Music and WIFLFAG are still Brill
Always enjoyed the album but never as much as I have recently.
Medellin ofcourse
Just stumbled across this - what a bop!
Think it’s by oakenfold was a gift vinyl for her fan club members.
I'm feeling pretty shitty and ill and I just needed a Madge album to suit the mood I was in. Gone for Bedtime Stories - her softest, most calming album. I don't love this album like her others but it's always a nice listen through.
What are people's thoughts on the album?
Bedtime Stories is my go-to album when I'm feeling blue or need to chill out. A really underrated release but in a way I like that about it as I guess it feels like it's more personal to me. It takes a few tracks to get going but it's such a journey as soon as 'Inside of Me' hits. Moments of intimacy, moments of pain, moments of self-examination... lots to take in and the gentle, sensual sounds of the album helps the songs flow so easily. Deserves a lot more than being considered just 'damage limitation' to Erotica.
God control may now be my fav !
Medellin is now my most 12 played track ever !!
Just randomly listened to Now! 45 and just discovered this:
Doesn't really do anything for me but nice to see the fantastic intro to 'Papa Don't Preach' get some recognition.
I was discovering some dance music earlier in the week and found this 'Material Girl' sampling track too:
Giving Hard Candy one of its rare plays from me. It's a fun listen but in no way gives me the feels that pretty much every other Madonna album does.
Favourite from it: Devil Wouldn't Recognize You
I've just listened to 'Rescue Me' and 'I Don't Search, I Find' back to back and omg it's giving me life.
Literally drop 'I Don't Search, I Find' alongside any song from that era and it slots in so well.
Currently enjoying a spot of Isaac. Revisiting all her material recently via the fabulous rate has really made me appreciate some of her songs all over again *.*
Just listened to the 12-inch version of 'Vogue'. Wow, what an experience! *.*
Oh I listened to that for the first time the other day! It's okay but I was a bit disappointed if I'm honest, definitely doesn't add a lot to the normal version.
You're right, nothing is really added to the song, but I just love the new arrangement with the house interlude included in the extended intro and part of the chorus being moved ahead of the first verse. The song in its original form has enough room to breathe anyway but extending that further in this version works too.
So I'm just minding my own business and listening to 'Confessions' on Spotify and I am SHOCKED to discover that the alarm clock sound has been erased from the beginning of 'Get Together'.
That's the unmixed edit for you! I agree it's strange hearing 'Get Together' without the alarm clock!
I like the edited version for the sake of playlists and listening on shuffle, but there should really be two versions of the album uploaded. Or maybe on the edited version, there could be a way of adjusting those transitions so you still get the full song that you're listening to without the other song fading in?
I'm listening to Ray of Light this evening. I do love the album but I've always found the ordering of the tracks a little out in places, especially as the title track just sounds amazing after Drowned World as an intro. I've found myself listening to it quite a lot in this order now:
01 Drowned World
02 Ray of Light
03 Sky Fits Heaven
04 Candy Perfume Girl
05 Swim
06 Frozen
07 The Power of Good-bye
08 Skin
09 Shanti / Ashtangi
10 Nothing Really Matters
11 To Have and Not to Hold
12 Little Star
13 Mer Girl
Not too many changes but I just find myself enjoying it far more like that for some reason.
I like the way 'Swim' fades out into 'Ray of Light' but 'Drowned World' does the trick just as well. I've had no issue with the ordering of the tracks but I'll check out your altered version and see what I think!
Speaking of 'Ray of Light', I'm loving this extended version of the track:
I remember Madonna, or maybe it was Orbit, saying in an interview that the original version of the track was 10 minutes long but that they had to cut it down - I wonder if '10 minutes' was a slight exaggeration and that this was the version they're talking about? They described it as going completely bonkers towards the end so the description fits.
On the subject of extended mixes, I've been obsessed with an extended mix of 'Hung Up on YouTube. Now, just today, I've discovered that it's an official mix and is on Spotify!
Added to my Madonna playlist!
Stumbled across this mash-up of 'Ray of Light' with Gaga's 'Stupid Love' and it works really well!
Both are suitably bonkers and fun, fun, fun. Love the extended outro, are there some new vocals that aren't in the finished version?
Listening to Frozen right now
It’s now made me want to listen to Ray of Light the album in full
Frozen The entire RoL era is perfection. What a special era!
I have had 'I'm Breathless' on repeat this past week The survivor polls led me to it, and i've decided to properly give it time Some of the tracks are pure trash but there are a handful of nices ones (and 'Vogue' ofc), so it's not totally a lost cause!
Listening to a Stardust vs Madonna - Music Sounds Better on ‘Holiday’, absolutely great remix. There was a few videos completed love it!
Fresh from the AF Idol thread I listened to the first half of Celebration because I had NO IDEA Holiday was by Madonna It turns out I'm actually a secret Madonna fan... so secret in fact I didn't even know it. So there's a rough rate of the first disc
CD 1:
01) 06 Hung Up - I knew this song but I've never been a big fan, it's okay but I'd rather just listen to ABBA
02) 08 Music - I've heard this in passing before, not the most memorable though tbh but I'm a fan
03) 08 Vogue - I KNEW THIS WAS MADONNA! I actually quite like it as a song, if it's not something I listen to very often.
04) 09 4 Minutes - Great song, I've always liked this as a Justin Timberlake song
05) 10 Holiday - Banger that I ONLY JUST FOUND OUT WAS MADONNA
06) 08 Like A Virgin - Another one of the few songs I knew was from Madonna although ngl I knew it from Pitch Perfect first
07) 06 Into The Groove
08) 09 Everybody - I really like it on first listen
09) 09 Like A Prayer - I knew she had a song called this but never knew it was this song!!
10) 10 Ray Of Light - I love this song, but again did not know this was Madonna... Such a banger I can't believe I just didn't know I feel the same way I felt when I found out Believe was by Cher
11) 08 Sorry - This reminds me of the Scooby Doo theme song
12) 08 Express Yourself - Once again had no clue this was a Madonna song
13) 06 Open Your Heart - See the above, except I like this much less
14) 06 Borderline - Never heard this before
15) 05 Secret - Or this, I feel her voice gets lost in the song here a bit it sounds like a demo that got lost
16) 06 Erotica
17) 05 Justify My Love - Similar to Secret imo
18) 07 Celebration
Welcome Dexton !
Always pleased to welcome a new fan .
During lockdown I have taken the time to listen to Kylie whom I have never given the time of day to before.
Is it due to your age that you didn’t know these songs were from Madonna ?
Moved these posts here, hope you don't mind
DEXTON Is this your first Madonna forum post? WELCOME xo Good to see you discovering new music today. Celebration as a collection is a good place to start because it has some of her more recent hits, but avoids the very recent ones which are extremely divisive, oop~
I am most shocked that you didn't really know much of 'Like A Prayer' as a song before this! It's one of (if not the) most impactful pop songs of all time!!
There's the super deluxe double disc version of Celebration too btw, just mentioning
Stick around in the forum - we don't bite!
Always interesting to hear the thoughts of someone properly discovering Madonna! It's so surreal to realise people may not be fully aware certain songs were by Madonna, even some of her biggest hits! I guess her many makeovers and explorations of genres means that many people might have grown up hearing or seeing her songs but never making the connection between them.
I'd definitely recommend listening to the second of Celebration if you enjoyed the first! Lots of great songs to discover there, some big hits too!
I listened to American Life the single today then decided to then play the entire American Life album!
What a listen it was. For me the album really got going around the time it gets to Nobody Knows Me from that point on it’s really all killer for me.
Still not keen on the title track, Hollywood or I’m So Stupid though. Love Profusion sounds better now than it did years though but it’s not a highlight of the album.
A great album full of great album tracks but not great singles wise.
(Sorry for turning this into an album thread lol just couldn’t find a separate one just based on American Life).
I enjoy all of American Life but I agree it really gets in its stride from 'Nobody Knows Me'. I really wish 'Nothing Fails' was given a proper release - I really think this could have saved the album a little. Radio would surely eat it up and it would represent a side to the album that was sadly being neglected. Ah well.
Nothing fails would have been a hit !
