Would like to see your charts for 1982 on here soon, looking at the Official Chart archive from that year, that is probably my favourite year from the 80s for music. 1987 seems to have had some great songs making the chart though so I look forward to seeing your personal charts for this year and also seeing the episodes from that year once they appear soon on the BBC Four TOTP re-run. Hi Snakey, I'll see if I can push 1980/1/2 through a bit ahead of the crowd - hoping to have a go over Xmas at some serious catching up old charts and indulge myself a bit |

It's a sudden leap to the top spot for Erasure, Sometimes has pottered around climbing slowly for a few weeks, before stopping Debbie Harry getting a solo topper - though Blondie would be back for some more in the 21st century anyway. Vince Clark had already topped with Yazoo's Only You 4 years earlier, and it wouldn't be his last chart-topper either. Cyndi Lauper rockets into the top 20 with Change Of Heart, easily outdoing True Colors which was pleasantly dull in comparison, and giving her a 4th top 20. Highest newie is The Damned, 7 years of chart entries and counting, followed by a 3rd for Fuzzbox, both inside the 40, just behind a leaping Jam & Lewis Human League, and ahead of a cool Oran 'Juice' Jones, both climbing fast. Genesis also return with one of their very best singles, Land Of Confusion and it's Spitting Image video, and the smooth Shake You Down gives Gregory Abbott a debut. Actor and comedian Billy Crystal, long a fave from the sitcom Soap, and en route to movie stardom, slips out a whimsical US hit single, You Look Marvellous, done in the style of latin Hollywood movie star Fernando Llamas, and tickles my fancy as I also liked Fernando. The Housemartins cover the Isleys, and instantly outdo them with their accapella version. Talking of Yazoo, Alison Moyet is also back with a goodie, Is This Love, and Howard Jones & Five Star add to their list, while new in at 75, briefly, it's Wendy Richard reprising her 1962 smash Come Outside, which I adored as a 4 or 5-year-old and thereafter, though she swaps lead singer from Mike Sarne to Mike Berry who had been hitless for 6 years, but gets 11 years of chart entries since his 1975 cover of Don't Be Cruel, some 10 years since his 60's popstar career stalled. 1 ( 14 ) SOMETIMES Erasure 2 ( 5 ) FRENCH KISSING IN THE USA Debbie Harry 3 ( 3 ) BECAUSE I LOVE YOU Shakin’ Stevens 4 ( 4 ) LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER Bon Jovi 5 ( 1 ) TAKE MY BREATH AWAY Berlin 6 ( 7 ) SHOWIN’ OUT (GET FRESH AT THE WEEKEND) Mel & Kim 7 ( 2 ) SWEET LOVE Anita Baker 8 ( 9 ) YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON Kim Wilde 9 ( 18 ) EACH TIME YOU BREAK MY HEART Nick Kamen 10 ( 10 ) (WAITING FOR) THE GHOST TRAIN Madness 11 ( 50 ) CHANGE OF HEART Cyndi Lauper 12 ( 12 ) NOTORIOUS Duran Duran 13 ( 8 ) ALL I ASK OF YOU Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman 14 ( 15 ) BREAKOUT Swing Out Sister 15 ( 6 ) THIS IS THE WORLD CALLING Bob Geldof 16 ( 11 ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 17 ( 28 ) WE LOVE YOU OMD 18 ( 25 ) THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Europe 19 ( 29 ) KEEP EACH OTHER WARM Bucks Fizz 20 ( 22 ) ARIZONA SKY China Crisis 21 ( 13 ) SUBURBIA Pet Shop Boys 22 ( 17 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 23 ( 16 ) WATERLOO Doctor & The Medics featuring Roy Wood 24 ( 32 ) EMOTION IN MOTION Ric Okasek 25 ( 20 ) FOR AMERICA Red Box 26 ( 34 ) I’VE BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE Cutting Crew 27 ( 24 ) IN THE ARMY NOW Status Quo 28 ( 19 ) DON’T GET ME WRONG The Pretenders 29 ( 33 ) ALL FALL DOWN Ultravox 30 ( 37 ) WARRIORS OF THE WASTELAND Frankie Goes To Hollywood 31 ( 26 ) STEP RIGHT UP Jaki Graham 32 ( 27 ) HUMAN Human League 33 ( 21 ) DON’T GIVE UP Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush 34 ( 39 ) MIRACLE OF LOVE Eurythmics 35 ( 35 ) THROUGH THE BARRICADES Spandau Ballet 36 ( 60 ) I NEED YOUR LOVIN’ Human League 37 ( 42 ) SOUL LOVE/SOUL MAN Womack & Womack 38 ( NEW ) ANYTHING The Damned 39 ( NEW ) LOVE IS THE SLUG We’ve Got A Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It 40 ( 63 ) THE RAIN Oran ‘Juice’ Jones 41 ( 66 ) SO COLD THE NIGHT The Communards 42 ( 23 ) NEVER TOO LATE TO LOVE YOU Kissing The Pink 43 ( 40 ) WHEN THE WIND BLOWS David Bowie 44 ( 36 ) TWO PEOPLE Tina Turner 45 ( 31 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 46 ( 48 ) DANGER ZONE Kenny Loggins 47 ( 71 ) GHOSTDANCING Simple Minds 48 ( 67 ) DON’T FORGET ME Glass Tiger 49 ( 46 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 50 ( 38 ) THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW The Monkees 51 ( 54 ) CANDY Cameo 52 ( 47 ) EXPERIMENT IV Kate Bush 53 ( NEW ) LAND OF CONFUSION Genesis 54 ( 53 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 55 ( 30 ) ASK The Smiths 56 ( NEW ) SHAKE YOU DOWN Gregory Abbott 57 ( 58 ) AIN’T NOTHIN’ BUT A HOUSEPARTY Phil Fearon 58 ( 44 ) SHELTER Lone Justice 59 ( NEW ) YOU LOOK MARVELLOUS Billy Crystal 60 ( NEW ) CARAVAN OF LOVE The Housemartins 61 ( 64 ) C’EST LA VIE Robbie Nevil 62 ( 61 ) CRY Godley & Creme 63 ( 49 ) THORN IN MY SIDE Eurythmics 64 ( NEW ) CROSS THAT BRIDGE The Ward Brothers 65 ( 62 ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 66 ( NEW ) IS THIS LOVE Alison Moyet 67 ( NEW ) YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU...DON’T YOU Howard Jones 68 ( 69 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 69 ( 75 ) SLOW RIVERS Elton John & Cliff Richard 70 ( 68 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 71 ( NEW ) IF I SAY YES Five Star 72 ( 73 ) WAR Bruce Springsteen 73 ( 74 ) I’M NOT PERFECT (BUT I’M PERFECT FOR YOU) Grace Jones 74 ( 65 ) WHEN I THINK OF YOU Janet Jackson 75 ( NEW ) COME OUTSIDE Mike Berry & Wendy Richard Playlist Oldies 1 WHY Donny Osmond 2 YOU CAN DO MAGIC America 3 BEHIND THE MASK Greg Philinganes |

2nd December 1986
2 weeks on top for Erasure, as Madonna's True Blue album delivers the highest new entry at 6 with the fab Open Your Heart. The even-fabber La Isla Bonita is in my playlist as ineligible for my singles-only listings. She also replaces one of her own songs in the top 10 as Nick Kamen drops, and keeps her hot streak of top 10's going. Bucks Fizz add to their long-list of top 10's with a warm Christmassy ballad - or at least a cocoa-advert-ey ballad. Oran 'Juice' Jones gets another big leap into the 20, and big top 40 leapers include Cameo, Gregory Abbott, Genesis and Cliff & Elton. The late Jackie Wilson is reinvented in plasticine video form and makes fifties biggie Reet Petite about to become the oldest record to top the UK charts - but not mine. Billy Ocean is big in 1986, so why not remix his first hit from 1976? In at 57, and the Motown-flavoured original still sounds better than most of his 80's hits these days. Daryl Hall keeps the solo entries coming, also from the Class of '76 debuts, while George Benson shivers a bit (Winter is here!) and a run of 11 chart years since Supership. Quo can beat that - 1973 they debuted in my charts, and now have 2 in the listings, how greedy! Of course Macca beats the lot of 'em, being as he debuted with The Beatles on top of my first retro charts in 1968 with Hey Jude, and is back with another Press To Play track. 1 ( 1 ) SOMETIMES Erasure 2 ( 2 ) FRENCH KISSING IN THE USA Debbie Harry 3 ( 6 ) SHOWIN’ OUT (GET FRESH AT THE WEEKEND) Mel & Kim 4 ( 4 ) LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER Bon Jovi 5 ( 3 ) BECAUSE I LOVE YOU Shakin’ Stevens 6 ( NEW ) OPEN YOUR HEART Madonna 7 ( 8 ) YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON Kim Wilde 8 ( 5 ) TAKE MY BREATH AWAY Berlin 9 ( 11 ) CHANGE OF HEART Cyndi Lauper 10 ( 19 ) KEEP EACH OTHER WARM Bucks Fizz 11 ( 7 ) SWEET LOVE Anita Baker 12 ( 9 ) EACH TIME YOU BREAK MY HEART Nick Kamen 13 ( 18 ) THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Europe 14 ( 10 ) (WAITING FOR) THE GHOST TRAIN Madness 15 ( 14 ) BREAKOUT Swing Out Sister 16 ( 12 ) NOTORIOUS Duran Duran 17 ( 17 ) WE LOVE YOU OMD 18 ( 13 ) ALL I ASK OF YOU Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman 19 ( 40 ) THE RAIN Oran ‘Juice’ Jones 20 ( 16 ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 21 ( 30 ) WARRIORS OF THE WASTELAND Frankie Goes To Hollywood 22 ( 26 ) I’VE BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE Cutting Crew 23 ( 51 ) CANDY Cameo 24 ( 15 ) THIS IS THE WORLD CALLING Bob Geldof 25 ( 20 ) ARIZONA SKY China Crisis 26 ( 34 ) MIRACLE OF LOVE Eurythmics 27 ( 22 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 28 ( 29 ) ALL FALL DOWN Ultravox 29 ( NEW ) FALLIN’ IN LOVE (UH-UH) Miami Sound Machine 30 ( 27 ) IN THE ARMY NOW Status Quo 31 ( 21 ) SUBURBIA Pet Shop Boys 32 ( 41 ) SO COLD THE NIGHT The Communards 33 ( 56 ) SHAKE YOU DOWN Gregory Abbott 34 ( 35 ) THROUGH THE BARRICADES Spandau Ballet 35 ( 25 ) FOR AMERICA Red Box 36 ( NEW ) REET PETITE Jackie Wilson 37 ( 53 ) LAND OF CONFUSION Genesis 38 ( 38 ) ANYTHING The Damned 39 ( 28 ) DON’T GET ME WRONG The Pretenders 40 ( 69 ) SLOW RIVERS Elton John & Cliff Richard 41 ( 32 ) HUMAN Human League 42 ( 24 ) EMOTION IN MOTION Ric Okasek 43 ( 33 ) DON’T GIVE UP Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush 44 ( 31 ) STEP RIGHT UP Jaki Graham 45 ( 60 ) CARAVAN OF LOVE The Housemartins 46 ( 48 ) DON’T FORGET ME Glass Tiger 47 ( 23 ) WATERLOO Doctor & The Medics featuring Roy Wood 48 ( 44 ) TWO PEOPLE Tina Turner 49 ( 36 ) I NEED YOUR LOVIN’ Human League 50 ( 71 ) IF I SAY YES Five Star 51 ( 49 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 52 ( 45 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 53 ( 61 ) C’EST LA VIE Robbie Nevil 54 ( 66 ) IS THIS LOVE Alison Moyet 55 ( 50 ) THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW The Monkees 56 ( 54 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 57 ( NEW ) LOVE REALLY HURTS WITHOUT YOU (REMIX) Billy Ocean 58 ( 59 ) YOU LOOK MARVELLOUS Billy Crystal 59 ( 42 ) NEVER TOO LATE TO LOVE YOU Kissing The Pink 60 ( NEW ) I WASN’T BORN YESTERDAY Daryl Hall 61 ( 37 ) SOUL LOVE/SOUL MAN Womack & Womack 62 ( 47 ) GHOSTDANCING Simple Minds 63 ( 67 ) YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU...DON’T YOU Howard Jones 64 ( 64 ) CROSS THAT BRIDGE The Ward Brothers 65 ( 62 ) CRY Godley & Creme 66 ( NEW ) SHIVER George Benson 67 ( 72 ) WAR Bruce Springsteen 68 ( 68 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 69 ( NEW ) DREAMING Status Quo 70 ( 39 ) LOVE IS THE SLUG We’ve Got A Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It 71 ( 73 ) I’M NOT PERFECT (BUT I’M PERFECT FOR YOU) Grace Jones 72 ( 43 ) WHEN THE WIND BLOWS David Bowie 73 ( 65 ) ELEANOR RIGBY/ YELLOW SUBMARINE The Beatles 74 ( NEW ) ONLY LOVE REMAINS Paul McCartney 75 ( 70 ) NEW BEGINNING (MAMBA SEYRA) Bucks Fizz 2nd Dec PLAYIST OLDIES - all future chart-toppers in my charts in 1992, 1987, 2000's respectively! 1 DANCING QUEEN Abba 2 LA ISLA BONITA Madonna 3 YOU’RE MY WORLD Cilla Black |

Hi Steve, yes Ultravox were very much on the decline by 1986, and Housemartins are about to make a huge leap - I think I took a short while to warm to it as I liked the original version cheers! john |

It's 3 weeks on top for Erasure as Madonna threatens her 3rd chart-topper in a row at 2, and the chart starts to feel a little festive with The Housemartins leaping up to 13 with the Isleys cover, The Ronettes topping my oldies playlist (had I charted oldies in those days that means it would have been invading my top 75), and Chris De Burgh's 3rd good single entering at 74, a perennial of course these days that never quite got the chart positions you might think. His other 2 good ones are High On Emotion and Don't Pay The Ferryman. Europe go top 5, that'll please Brexiteers aiming for The Final Countdown, while Communards leap right into the top 10 from 32 with one of their very best tracks, So Cold The Night. Gregory Abbot & Jackie Wilson have good leaps into the 20, that'll be the 3rd time Jackie has done that with oldies starting with Higher & Higher in 1969, I Get The Sweetest feeling in 1972, both of them going top 30 in 1975 as a double A, and now Reet Petite posthumously triggering the same 2 to come back and hit even higher peaks in 1987!! Highest new entry is a-ha crying wolf, another winner from Morten & the lads yet to put a foot wrong, at 32, as Rod the Mod enters with In My Life at 35 the touching John Lennon Beatles song. As is always the case with Rod covers, bar Oh No Not My Baby and Ooh La La, it's not as good as the original. Paul Simon's good Boy In The Bubble is in at 45, giving him 17 years of chart success, 2 more than Rod, and 7 more than Elkie Brooks who returns with her last very good hit, No More The Fool at 62. 1 ( 1 ) SOMETIMES Erasure 2 ( 6 ) OPEN YOUR HEART Madonna 3 ( 3 ) SHOWIN’ OUT (GET FRESH AT THE WEEKEND) Mel & Kim 4 ( 13 ) THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Europe 5 ( 2 ) FRENCH KISSING IN THE USA Debbie Harry 6 ( 19 ) THE RAIN Oran ‘Juice’ Jones 7 ( 4 ) LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER Bon Jovi 8 ( 5 ) BECAUSE I LOVE YOU Shakin’ Stevens 9 ( 9 ) CHANGE OF HEART Cyndi Lauper 10 ( 32 ) SO COLD THE NIGHT The Communards 11 ( 10 ) KEEP EACH OTHER WARM Bucks Fizz 12 ( 8 ) TAKE MY BREATH AWAY Berlin 13 ( 45 ) CARAVAN OF LOVE The Housemartins 14 ( 7 ) YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON Kim Wilde 15 ( 33 ) SHAKE YOU DOWN Gregory Abbott 16 ( 36 ) REET PETITE Jackie Wilson 17 ( 12 ) EACH TIME YOU BREAK MY HEART Nick Kamen 18 ( 23 ) CANDY Cameo 19 ( 11 ) SWEET LOVE Anita Baker 20 ( 21 ) WARRIORS OF THE WASTELAND Frankie Goes To Hollywood 21 ( 26 ) THE MIRACLE OF LOVE Eurythmics 22 ( 29 ) FALLIN’ IN LOVE (UH-UH) Miami Sound Machine 23 ( 37 ) LAND OF CONFUSION Genesis 24 ( 14 ) (WAITING FOR) THE GHOST TRAIN Madness 25 ( 18 ) ALL I ASK OF YOU Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman 26 ( 40 ) SLOW RIVERS Elton John & Cliff Richard 27 ( 15 ) BREAKOUT Swing Out Sister 28 ( 16 ) NOTORIOUS Duran Duran 29 ( 20 ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 30 ( 38 ) ANYTHING The Damned 31 ( 17 ) WE LOVE YOU OMD 32 ( NEW ) CRY WOLF a-ha 33 ( 27 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 34 ( 22 ) I’VE BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE Cutting Crew 35 ( NEW ) IN MY LIFE Rod Stewart 36 ( 30 ) IN THE ARMY NOW Status Quo 37 ( 24 ) THIS IS THE WORLD CALLING Bob Geldof 38 ( 31 ) SUBURBIA Pet Shop Boys 39 ( RE ) DANGER ZONE Kenny Loggins 40 ( 44 ) STEP RIGHT UP Jaki Graham 41 ( 41 ) HUMAN Human League 42 ( 54 ) IS THIS LOVE Alison Moyet 43 ( 35 ) FOR AMERICA Red Box 44 ( 53 ) C’EST LA VIE Robbie Nevil 45 ( NEW ) THE BOY IN THE BUBBLE Paul Simon 46 ( 25 ) ARIZONA SKY China Crisis 47 ( 60 ) I WASN’T BORN YESTERDAY Daryl Hall 48 ( 39 ) DON’T GET ME WRONG The Pretenders 49 ( 66 ) SHIVER George Benson 50 ( 50 ) IF I SAY YES Five Star 51 ( 28 ) ALL FALL DOWN Ultravox 52 ( 51 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 53 ( 43 ) DON’T GIVE UP Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush 54 ( 69 ) DREAMING Status Quo 55 ( 34 ) THROUGH THE BARRICADES Spandau Ballet 56 ( 56 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 57 ( 57 ) LOVE REALLY HURTS WITHOUT YOU (REMIX) Billy Ocean 58 ( 74 ) ONLY LOVE REMAINS Paul McCartney 59 ( 52 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 60 ( 42 ) EMOTION IN MOTION Ric Okasek 61 ( 63 ) YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU...DON’T YOU Howard Jones 62 ( NEW ) NO MORE THE FOOL Elkie Brooks 63 ( 71 ) I’M NOT PERFECT (BUT I’M PERFECT FOR YOU) Grace Jones 64 ( 64 ) CROSS THAT BRIDGE The Ward Brothers 65 ( 55 ) THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW The Monkees 66 ( 67 ) WAR Bruce Springsteen 67 ( 65 ) CRY Godley & Creme 68 ( 68 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 69 ( 48 ) TWO PEOPLE Tina Turner 70 ( 47 ) WATERLOO Doctor & The Medics featuring Roy Wood 71 ( 61 ) SOUL LOVE/SOUL MAN Womack & Womack 72 ( 49 ) I NEED YOUR LOVIN’ Human League 73 ( 59 ) NEVER TOO LATE TO LOVE YOU Kissing The Pink 74 ( NEW ) A SPACEMAN CAME TRAVELLING Chris De Burgh 75 ( 46 ) DON’T FORGET ME Glass Tiger Playlist Oldies Of The Week 1 SLEIGH RIDE The Ronettes 2 BOYS DO FALL IN LOVE Robin Gibb 3 DREAM WEAVER Gary Wright |

It's the hat-trick for Madonna, as Open Your Heart gives her 3 chart-toppers in a row, holding The Final Countdown at 2. Cameo get a 3rd top 10, Jackie Wilson ditto, and Genesis a 4th. Daryl Hall makes it solo top40 hits, and Human League does a turnabout and leaps into the 30 after looking perilously like it was heading for the lowest chart position of any track from them (ignoring reissues) since the EP in 1980 debuted and peaked outside the 40. Also Spirit Of '80 debut acts The Gap Band return, as does chart-topping Dexy's Midnight Runners now back with a TV theme tune, while 1980 chart-toppers The Pretenders are also back with the lovely Hymn To Her. Bad Company return for the first time since the mid-70's, minus vocalist Paul Rodgers, ex-Free lead singer, but some of the band still technically date back to 1970 Free-era, and Mott The Hoople 1972-era. Spitting Image return with a Xmas novelty song. Thankfully, no I don't remember it either. I can't imagine it's worse than their appalling chart-topper. Quo are beside themsleves in the top 40, and Elkie Brooks keeps the 70's blues rock vibe going just behind them. Meanwhile my oldies chart shows me obviously revisiting December 1971 reel-to-reel tapes, and opting for the rock tracks and ex-Godspell soul singers. 1 ( 2 ) OPEN YOUR HEART Madonna 2 ( 4 ) THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Europe 3 ( 1 ) SOMETIMES Erasure 4 ( 6 ) THE RAIN Oran ‘Juice’ Jones 5 ( 18 ) CANDY Cameo 6 ( 3 ) SHOWIN’ OUT (GET FRESH AT THE WEEKEND) Mel & Kim 7 ( 9 ) CHANGE OF HEART Cyndi Lauper 8 ( 16 ) REET PETITE Jackie Wilson 9 ( 23 ) LAND OF CONFUSION Genesis 10 ( 10 ) SO COLD THE NIGHT The Communards 11 ( 7 ) LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER Bon Jovi 12 ( 13 ) CARAVAN OF LOVE The Housemartins 13 ( 15 ) SHAKE YOU DOWN Gregory Abbott 14 ( 5 ) FRENCH KISSING IN THE USA Debbie Harry 15 ( 8 ) BECAUSE I LOVE YOU Shakin’ Stevens 16 ( 12 ) TAKE MY BREATH AWAY Berlin 17 ( 21 ) THE MIRACLE OF LOVE Eurythmics 18 ( 11 ) KEEP EACH OTHER WARM Bucks Fizz 19 ( 32 ) CRY WOLF a-ha 20 ( 22 ) FALLIN’ IN LOVE (UH-UH) Miami Sound Machine 21 ( 47 ) I WASN’T BORN YESTERDAY Daryl Hall 22 ( 26 ) SLOW RIVERS Elton John & Cliff Richard 23 ( 14 ) YOU KEEP ME HANGIN’ ON Kim Wilde 24 ( 19 ) SWEET LOVE Anita Baker 25 ( 17 ) EACH TIME YOU BREAK MY HEART Nick Kamen 26 ( 25 ) ALL I ASK OF YOU Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman 27 ( 72 ) I NEED YOUR LOVIN’ Human League 28 ( 42 ) IS THIS LOVE Alison Moyet 29 ( 45 ) THE BOY IN THE BUBBLE Paul Simon 30 ( 20 ) WARRIORS OF THE WASTELAND Frankie Goes To Hollywood 31 ( 24 ) (WAITING FOR) THE GHOST TRAIN Madness 32 ( 39 ) DANGER ZONE Kenny Loggins 33 ( 35 ) IN MY LIFE Rod Stewart 34 ( 29 ) WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN The Bangles 35 ( 40 ) STEP RIGHT UP Jaki Graham 36 ( 33 ) TRUE BLUE Madonna 37 ( NEW ) THIS LOVE Bad Company 38 ( 36 ) IN THE ARMY NOW Status Quo 39 ( 54 ) DREAMING Status Quo 40 ( 62 ) NO MORE THE FOOL Elkie Brooks 41 ( 41 ) HUMAN Human League 42 ( 38 ) SUBURBIA Pet Shop Boys 43 ( 44 ) C’EST LA VIE Robbie Nevil 44 ( 37 ) THIS IS THE WORLD CALLING Bob Geldof 45 ( 28 ) NOTORIOUS Duran Duran 46 ( NEW ) SANTA CLAUS IS ON THE DOLE Spitting Image 47 ( 49 ) SHIVER George Benson 48 ( 27 ) BREAKOUT Swing Out Sister 49 ( 61 ) YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU...DON’T YOU Howard Jones 50 ( 30 ) ANYTHING The Damned 51 ( 58 ) ONLY LOVE REMAINS Paul McCartney 52 ( 31 ) WE LOVE YOU OMD 53 ( 52 ) AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Diana Ross 54 ( 34 ) I’VE BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE Cutting Crew 55 ( NEW ) BIG FUN The Gap Band 56 ( 43 ) FOR AMERICA Red Box 57 ( 56 ) A DIFFERENT CORNER George Michael 58 ( 71 ) SOUL LOVE/SOUL MAN Womack & Womack 59 ( 48 ) DON’T GET ME WRONG The Pretenders 60 ( NEW ) HYMN TO HER The Pretenders 61 ( 64 ) CROSS THAT BRIDGE The Ward Brothers 62 ( 46 ) ARIZONA SKY China Crisis 63 ( 50 ) IF I SAY YES Five Star 64 ( 59 ) RAIN OR SHINE Five Star 65 ( NEW ) REAL WILD CHILD Iggy Pop 66 ( 53 ) DON’T GIVE UP Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush 67 ( 74 ) A SPACEMAN CAME TRAVELLING Chris De Burgh 68 ( 67 ) CRY Godley & Creme 69 ( 68 ) E=MC2 Big Audio Dynamite 70 ( NEW ) BECAUSE OF YOU Dexy’s Midnight Runners 71 ( 55 ) THROUGH THE BARRICADES Spandau Ballet 72 ( 60 ) EMOTION IN MOTION Ric Okasek 73 ( NEW ) RADIO MUSICOLA Nik Kershaw 74 ( 65 ) THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW The Monkees 75 ( NEW ) SOME PEOPLE Paul Young Playlist oldies 1 FIREBALL Deep Purple 2 HOLD YOUR HEAD UP Argent 3 WHEN YOU GET RIGHT DOWN TO IT Ronnie Dyson |

The nostalgia factor seems massive during this period of time and in 1987 with Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Ben E King and Percy Sledge's best known songs all returning to the upper reaches of the chart, mostly because of being in adverts at the time.
My favourite songs in your chart are Warriors of The Wasteland and Land Of Confusion, both have that 80s stadium rock sound I like! Cry Wolf is great too! |

Hi Snakey, yes I was quite happy with adverts giving me the chance to chart classic oldies from before I started charting, very thoughtful of them! I liked stadium rock too, it had started to become a dirty word by the end of the 80's, especially when grunge came in, but they seem to have outlasted grunge in popularity with people generally and with younger audiences |

23rd December 1986
It's straight in at 1 for recent Xmas classic Last Christmas, making it the 3rd xmas period in a row it had topped my chart - back in the day I was charting those not-so-old xmas faves year after year if they had made the UK charts at all (to qualify). Without that qualification my charts would have looked like the usual UK Xmas charts, chock full of the classic oldies. I did it first though, starting in Christmas 1974 and onwards, and yes the same songs that still chart. Shaky also charts for the second xmas in a row. Ahead of my time! That explains why I tend not to chart the same ones these days - been doing it for 44 years oops! Eurythmics get another in a long line of top 10 singles, and Housemartins make it 2, as Jennifer Rush gets some recharting action in the UK singles chart, and thus mine too, a year on. Berlin come back with a good follow-up single that didn't sell well in the real world, annoyingly, in at 28 and The Gap Band go top 30, and that Spitting Image Xmas song inexplicably climbs to 29. I'm guessing the video was amusing, as I still don't recall it and can't be bothered to youtube it. Macca & The Pretenders keep the top 40's coming, Paul McCartney making it 18 years and counting. Spoiler: he's still making my charts 50 years on from Hey Jude. The Pointer Sisters return some 14 years on from first hearing of them (Yes We Can Can), Kool & The Gang keep the decade-long run of hits going blissfully unaware that House Music is about to end all that, Gary Moore is back again, ditto The Stranglers coming to a decade of charting, and James Brown makes his comeback last a bit longer. Great chart Pop!!
Wham for 3 years in a row - the equilivant of One More Sleep these days!! Such a culturally defining Xmas hit these days it's no surprise to see it at no1 3 christmases in a row. I assume christmases after the songs got better as you heard them more! George Michael could write a great song!! Lol at the Spitting Image track - I just knew it because it's usually on totp 2 at Christmas - seemed to be a quick cash boost after a summer no1 single, bit like the Cheeky Girls from a different era, not really a classic!! Human Leagues follow up to Human doesn't seem to have floor much traction - haven't seen it on totp yet! |
