I think we're all in need of an uplift today with Sarah's horribly sad news, so I'm going to be hosting a Girls Aloud listening party at 8pm today to celebrate the high points (and there are so many, of course) of their incredible career as a group.
If you're around, please join us to press play on Ten (standard edition) at 8pm tonight. I'll post each song in the thread so that we can discuss and comment along.
This is the album you need on Spotify:
Let us know if you'll be around, I hope you can join
A lovely idea
I’ll try and be around for this. I’ve been in the mood to want to listen to them all day since hearing the news
Im 100% down for this <3
💕 I’ll be there
Great idea I'll make sure to be around for this later.
Under an hour to go, pleased to see there's interest!
Unfortunately I can't be around to participate But I have been listening to them a lot today!
Best girl group ever, don't care what anyone says.
Fully agree you're here in spirit Aly and that's what matters!
10 MINUTES!
OUR SUPPORT ACT
Can't wait for this Girls Aloud were my childhood idols and I still adore their music!
01 Something New
What an ICONIC ANTHEM to start with!!!! My favourite Girls Aloud song, and one of my favourite songs of all-time (a surefire contender for #1??). The energy, the sass, the hooks *.*
My opinions on this are very well known :')
I actually don't hate it as much as I say I do... I just think it's ridiculously overrated. I don't like the verses!
06.0 Something New
I am finally the proud owner of the blue 'Something New' vinyl as of yesterday the perfect start to their comeback!
Oh and I'm not just saying this, but Sarah's "Take a walk on the wild side of life" is the genuine highlight!
ANTHEM I was elated when I first heard this for the first time, it really felt like Girls Aloud were back with a bang!
11,000,000/10 - Something New
02 The Promise
I was such a proud fan when 'The Promise' became such a mammoth hit for the girls! Love the throwback charm to it.
Ughhhhh. Another one I don't like nearly as much as I should/everyone else seems to!
Again, Sarah steals this song though. Especially live!

HERE I AM
WALKING PRIMROSE
^ Sarah's finest moment What a song, so classy and different for them! Would be low top 10 out of their singles for me I think.
Oh yeah, I was absolutely ecstatic for them that this was a huge hit for them (and the fact it gave them their first (and only ) BRIT).
I was initially confused by The Promise when I first heard it! It was so different to anything they'd ever done and wasn't at all what I was expecting. Not that I thought it was bad, I just needed a couple more listens to settle with it! It grew on me so quickly. The buzz around this song really made it seem like a #1 could be on the cards... and then it all fell into place It was such an amazing time to be a fan! This really felt like a moment.
11 Something New
10 The Promise
03 The Loving Kind
Another iconic Sarah moment...!
I adore The Loving Kind, especially this single mix! It's lush, and Nicola steals this one I think.
'The Loving Kind' is definitely my biggest Girls Aloud grower! It used to fall a bit flat for me but its beauty crept up over the years.
This is Nicola's song through and through, but doesn't she hate this?
The production is sublime. So dreamy and... Just gorgeous. Their most underrated imo.
06.0 Something New
06.0 The Promise
09.0 The Loving Kind
The Loving Kind is sounding beautiful, I particularly love the "I'd do anything..." section. I think it was a strong second single choice. It deserved more than #10!
11 Something New
10 The Promise
9 The Loving Kind
04 Untouchable
Through wind and rain we got here
Now we're flying babe with no fear
We've been doing pain for so long
When I stare in your eyes it's all gone
the way this song feels extra poignant today
I remember buying 'Out Of Control' on CD and instantly having such a connection with 'Untouchable' I was over the moon when it was chosen as a single! The single mix was a bit of a misfire but I'm glad it gave the song more attention anyway. The album version remains a discography highlight!
Started late due to spotify being a pain but two anthems to start with (not gonna give any song a 11 cos its not about that)
10 Something New
08 The Promise
THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST FOR ME. Absolutely SUBLIME.
I love it so much that even the radio edit couldn't hinder my love for it! The 6 minute version is outstanding. I wish they were brave enough to release that version of it!
06.0 Something New
06.0 The Promise
09.0 The Loving Kind
11.0 Untouchable
This has been such a slow-burning track for me, I always liked it but it's aged like a fine wine
I've always felt like the Radio Mix could have been a bit better than it is (I don't think the vocoder lends very well to it), but still, it's great. I prefer the album version, that's truly epic! As a fan, the #11 peak was incredibly frustrating... but they had done so very well to achieve 20 consecutive Top 10 hits
11 Something New
10 The Promise
9 The Loving Kind
8.5 Untouchable (Radio Mix) - I'd give a 10 to the album version
05 Sexy! No No No...
Sexy
My second fave GA song!! What an incredible track, I was obsessed at the time and I still adore it
Now time for my favourite GA song I remember receiving an email from the Girls Aloud website saying that they had a new single coming out called 'Sexy! No No No...' and was a bit mystified by that title the song was every bit as whacky as it suggested and in the best way possible *.* I love the video too!!
Cheryl's intro the whole song is so electrifying!
What a song. It packs SO much punch! Always has been an absolute fave for me!

06 Call the Shots
Call the Shots is just beautiful, what a stunner of a track. The production, the vocals, it's so subtle by their standards, which makes it so striking Nicola's "dreams that glitter" is perfection!
I remember being on holiday in Scotland when Sexy! premiered. It had quite an early in the morning premiere on radio, but the reception was bad... I heard bits of it and it sounded so chaotic I had to wait until going home to be able to hear it properly. An amazing way to start off that era, a song that only Girls Aloud could do. One of their very best!
Call the Shots is absolutely gorgeous One of my favourite mid-tempo songs of all time. The middle 8 with Nadine/Nicola is divine. It doesn't surprise me that UK radio finally warmed to Girls Aloud with this song - a #1 airplay smash!
Ooft the 'Tangled Up' era was everything 'Call The Shots' is lush! I'm so glad that it was quite a long-running hit for them too.
This has aged rather well for me. It's still really overrated, imo, but it's lovely. I find the chorus a bit monotonous and bland (something which The Loving Kind does better for me!) still... it's cute.

Hello all!
'Call the Shots' is a big fave, takes me right back to hearing it on the radio at the time. Nicola's middle-8 is beautiful.
07 Can't Speak French
Ugh, Tangled Up really was THAT bitch. All three singles are perfection!! (and I firmly believe this was the right third single, even over Girl Overboard!)
'Can't Speak French' is genuinely a 10/10 for me too... a flawless singles run! Really takes me back to being in Spain during summer '08, so much fun
Oh God. I really don't like this. This to me is what IUSA is to Britney's discography... the album they come from has a bunch of more interesting and better hits This is irritating, but catchy.

I know a lot of fans would have preferred 'Girl Overboard' but I think 'Can't Speak French' was a great choice of single! Tangled Up could definitely have had more singles if they weren't bothered about maintaining their run of Top 10s.
Omg it's banger after banger SKO is in their top 5 best, what an ANTHEM!!
'Something Kinda Ooooh' is such a stomper fond memories of listening to 'The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits' with my friends a lot during this time!
For a long time this was my favourite Girls Aloud single - it's quality definitely hasn't waned but I think there's a couple of songs that just edge above it now.
Love Nadine/Nicola's 'rap' section and Cheryl is the star of the video.
Anyone else learn the dance moves?
Can't Speak French I was always more than satisfied with this being chosen as the third single - many weren't! It's such a great, quirky bop. It had great longevity in the UK chart! http://girlsalouddiscography.weebly.com/cant-speak-french.html

WHAT A BANGER! I absolute love, love, L O V E this. It's a beast and never fails to get me going. Flawless. Until Untouchable came along, this was always my favourite. Surprisingly, Kimberley's part is my fave.
Also, when thinking about how many "O"s to use in the title, I always envision the single cover where each member is inside a letter :')

09 Biology
Biology is another incredible track!! It's probably just outside their top 10 for me so I like it a little less than most, but still adore it. It's so unique and unconventional
This one is slightly overrated for me. I like the song structure but the chorus doesn't hit quite as much - possibly the least interesting part of the song? Still a tune of course and well done to them for turning such an unconventional song into one of their signature hits.
'Biology' is my second favourite single of theirs such an idiosyncratic girl-group song! But they pulled it off so well.
An iconic orange McDonalds music player anthem
'Biology' is one of the most unique and interesting pop songs of all time. The video is absolutely fantastic too! So, SO good.

Biology remains a completely exhilarating listen 15 years on... it's so unique with its odd structure. Every element of this song is so catchy!
I'm glad this gave them a Top 5 hit for the Chemistry era. The public didn't seem quite as on board with them as they had before, which was a shame because Chemistry was such a step up from the first two albums. I think they played it wrong with the single choices overall.

10 The Show
The Show completes my Girls Aloud top 3, what a phenomenal song, and their best music video!!
'The Show' wasn't a huge favourite for me when I was younger but it's grown into something special over the years <3 so dreamy.
I always thought this was overrated too but it's really grown on me in recent times. Not sure why, I think the chorus just worked its way into my head. I really like the guitar line that runs through too, kind of nods to the edginess of their debut despite the obvious 'glow-up' in image and sound.
Love the synthy 80's sound of this! The video is great too. Ridiculously catchy and has always been a highlight!

The Show! I was absolutely obsessed with this when it came out, it still holds up well today. It was released 16 years ago, I was 16 years old at the time of release... where did the time go?
The music video is cheap and tacky but very endearing

Another iconic music video though, I remember it so clearly
Crazy that GA thought this would be career suicide when it has proven to be one of their signature hits! Not an ultimate favourite for me but a lot of fun nevertheless.
As much as this is a classic, it's probably their most annoying for me. I think with every listen, this gets worse for me

A classic! So glad they listened to their record label on this one! Great pop tune accompanied with a cute, easy-to-follow dance routine.
Love the little changes they make to the way they deliver the lines when performed live.
12 I'll Stand By You
I was listening to this early in light of Sarah's news. Her opening verse and the overall message is so poignant with this in mind.
I've always loved this version of the song.
I have a soft spot for their version of 'I'll Stand By You'. Particularly emotional right now. </3
I hadn't heard this song before Girls Aloud's version, so this is the original in my eyes. It's a beautiful track, they sound so good, and it's extra poignant today. We'll always stand by Sarah
I was totally bewildered with Love Machine on first listen. It was just so unlike any other music around at the time! It was definitely a grower, of course I ended up loving it. The routine for this one is so memorable, as are the colourful dresses they wore throughout its promotion!
It doesn't surprise me that it became one of their signature hits and that it's still pretty well remembered today. It going from being uncertified for years, to going Gold earlier this year *_*
I'll Stand By You - definitely my second favourite cover single of theirs, after Jump. I feel like some feel it's a bit sacrilegious to the original version, but personally I think Girls Aloud really made it their own. After so many near misses in the chart, it was wonderful to see them get a #1 again.

I think 'Jump' is my favourite Girls Aloud cover Nadine is such a star on it especially!
'I'll Stand By You' is cute. Dated, but cute. A nice enough cover of a classic that doesn't really bring anything original or unique to the song.
'Jump' sounds surprisingly fresh. This is definitely their best cover, imo. It gives the song a GA feel and doesn't feel like it's a straight cover.

I had such a crush on Nadine in this video. Her vocals are my favourite on the song, particularly the "I can feel you getting hotter / before you try and go much further" lines. This is definitely the ultimate version of the song for me.
*.* Their best cover! I was actually familiar with The Pointer Sisters version before Girls Aloud's cover, however I much prefer GA's version - the production gives it more of an edge, I think. I remember thinking in 2003 that the production was very fresh/modern. This always went down incredibly well on GA tours

14 No Good Advice
No Good Advice is a tiny bit overrated for me, but in GA's discography, that still puts it at 8/10 at the very least. What a brilliant song, and such a bold single after how huge SOTU was!
'No Good Advice' was the first Girls Aloud song I got into I remember begging my neighbour to lend me her copy of Now 55 just to listen to it
Still gloriously edgy for them *.*
Nadine steals the show on this one too. Think the verses better the chorus tbh and I love the use of guitar.
I don't think I appreciated this as much at the time as I do now. It's a bop and it was a great follow up to SOTU!

This was the perfect follow up to Sound of the Underground, as a pop song it's so sassy/edgy. I was pretty blown away by the song at the time and felt confident it would be another #1... so I'm still a bit that it was held off #1 by a R. Kelly song.

Possibly the best coronation single ever??
The ultimate coronation single! *.* I don't understand why X Factor etc. didn't follow by this example. It's a pop classic and you'd never have imagined it was a "winner's single" if you didn't already know.
It's so strange to think of this as a talent show winning single - where did the imagination go after how big a hit this was???? It's a classic and rightfully so
The fact that LOUIS WALSH CHOSE THIS FOR THEM TOO!!
Absolutely, one of the greatest pop debut singles (LET ALONE A REALITY TV SHOW WINNING SINGLE) of all time. I just remember falling absolutely in LOVE with this the minute I heard it and was so ecstatic that they managed to annihilate OTV :')

This was totally unlike anything I'd ever heard before. This sounded so unexpected and fresh. They totally nailed it with this song. Honestly looking back it seems like a miracle their record label had this up their sleeve for the girl group of a talent contest... it would have been all so easy for them to be given something really cheesy.
The microphone stand routine was also really inspired, to me it's iconic!
Also the music video - I think it's one of their best, and they really didn't come across like they'd been formed mere days before it was shot!

The single that should have bookended their discography! This is easily one of my favourites from them, I love the tour dance routine too - always think of that when I hear the song.
I'm still SO ANNOYED this wasn't their final single!! Some half-arsed, likely cancelled attempt at BCYLM was not the way to go out, and they could've had the PERFECT symmetry of starting on the underground, and finishing on the metro
This truly was the single that got away what an absolute monster of a chorus!
I *get* why SN was the chosen single, but this is better, for me. It just flows a whole lot better as a song to me.

This was such a misfire as a single oops so drab
I lowkey think this was cancelled as a single in the end? The lack of radio support entirely was quite strange...! (+ I want to discount it from their discography xxx)

I do like 'Beautiful Cause You Love Me' but I'd rather they didn't try play it 'safe' by releasing a wintry ballad (I say 'safe' as the whole thing was so half-arsed). Nicola does shine on it, definitely has her personal stamp all over it - you could just imagine a solo version on her album.
Also the fact that Nadine literally only sings "mahbabymahbabymahbabymahbabymahbabymahbabymahbabymahbaby" on their final "single"
I certainly don't hate Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me like some fans, but I do still hold a bit of resentment to it for being such a misfire of a single choice, ending their career on a bit of an iffy moment... #97
(Although to me it never felt like a proper Girls Aloud single without having a CD single )
It's a nice enough song, some great vocals. I feel like the sentiment of the lyrics don't come across quite as well as they intended them to.

If anyone's stopping now, thanks so much for taking part!!! Tonight's been a huge success and it's really cheered me up, I hope it has for you guys too.
LOVE the attitude on this one! A definite highlight on what is actually my least favourite Girls Aloud album!
The production of this *.*
This is my favourite non-single on WWTNS!! I wouldn't call it a missed single opportunity, they got those spot on I think, but this is still excellent.
The Jessie J inspiration with "n-n-n-n-n"?
It's an interesting song, but it's never been a fave! Tbh, I've really slacked in the GA album listening. Their debut I haven't heard but all their other albums I have, with Tangled Up & Out Of Control being the only 2 I returned to.
I love that they did this though and asked fans to vote for their favourite album tracks!

This should have been on the main disc! Possibly my favourite single from WWTNS! (excluding 'Jump' which I've always associated more with their debut).
'Wake Me Up' is SO underrated honestly in my GA top 5 at least! What an electrifying single, especially teamed with the thrilling motorcycle video. The production sounds so left-field for a girl-group, in fact I included it in my NMBTJ once and people were shocked that it was a Girls Aloud song!
Wake Me Up is SUCH a banger, hair whip anthem *.* Would have loved this on the main album but I'm glad it features at all (justice4longhotsummer)
Graffiti is absolutely one of their strongest album tracks! It really stands out (in a good way) on What Will the Neighbours Say.
Omg, the TV performance version of Wake Me Up This is funny, but the way it reaching #4 kind of upset me at the time... I was so keen for them to maintain their Top 3 streak!! They looked incredible in the music video for this one, even though it's incredibly cheap. This performance is one of their very best imo:
It's a shame that Wake Me Up is most definitely one of the most forgotten Girls Aloud singles

Wild Horses is such a fabulous track, that intro
Certainly a striking intro
Wild Horses really could only be by Girls Aloud! Such a bizarre intro, in a good way. The rest of the song is a bit of a bop, definitely one of Chemistry's highlights!

Ugh another Chemistry banger, this PRODUCTION!!! *.*
I feel like I'm bad at returning to their non-'Tangled Up' album tracks, need to rectify that as 'Swinging London Town' is fantastic!
I've spent a long time thinking I didn't like 'Swinging London Town'. It's better than I remembered for sure, but not still not about to become a highlight I don't think.
05 Whole Lotta History
'Whole Lotta History' is probably my favourite Girls Aloud ballad.
Whole Lotta History is undoubtedly their most underrated single, it's SUCH a beauty! Nicola and Sarah sound incredible, and I love Nadine's "I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't" too
"This is a fucking Top 3 hit" or whatever it was Sarah said during Off the Record.
This is such a beauty. I think they all shine on this but Nicola's solo definitely hits the heart.
Singing London Town is good.
WLH... OH MY! THEIR MOST UNDERRATED SINGLE
SO GORGEOUS! Nicola sounds absolutely stunning on this. <3

Swinging London Town felt like Chemistry's take on Graffiti My Soul. I don't think I liked it too much in their hey day, but it's sounding great today! Very electrifying.
Whole Lotta History is so beautiful, their best ballad imo. It's just unfortunate that See The Day came before it. I feel like the public weren't very enthused by Girls Aloud being in ballad mode. This should have been their Christmas 2005 single instead!
I remember Sarah being bitterly disappointed in this 'only' reaching #6 (as seen in their Off the Record documentary) while Nadine was totally unfazed

Heavy electronic production is such a fabulous sound for them
Girls Aloud would have a fantastic discography if you just included the B-sides and bonus tracks.
Crazy Fool is a strong track! Can understand it being a b-side and not a Chemistry album track, I think it stands out more next to its a-side (Whole Lotta History appropriately!).
It was interesting when Girls Aloud songs only had one member contribute to it, Crazy Fool being one of them - just Cheryl on vocals!
This is one of my favourite Girls Aloud B Sides, and honestly it's one of Cheryl's strongest solo songs

Of course they couldn't leave this off the CD2! Would've made a perfect 4th single from Tangled Up of course, one of their best songs
Oh wow, 'See The Day' really does have an unfortunate acronym
'Girl Overboard' is such a 'Tangled Up' highlight <3 <3
Crazy Fool is so good! Agreed that it's one of Cheryl's finest moments!
Girl Overboard is THAT B I T C H! WHAT A SONG. Should have been the single over Can't Speak French!

No surprise to see 'Girl Overboard' on the second disc - it's their ultimate album track for most fans! I love it, definitely could have been the fourth single from Tangled Up.
08 Black Jacks
I'm surprised this made the cut over 'Close To Love'! But not complaining, this was an immediate 'Tangled Up' favourite for me and has held up really well.
Another highlight from Tangled Up! It's one of the most memorable tracks for me, just for the fact it feels like 2 different songs in one, but it really works! You think it's gonna be this subdued, ballad before the first chorus comes in and gives you a huge right-left punch combo!

I like 'Black Jacks' but there's other Tangled Up songs I'd have chosen over it.
I love Black Jacks, if we could only have 2 album tracks included then they picked the right two for me! This CHORUS *.*
09 Hoxton Heroes
Girl Overboard and Black Jacks - two of their ultimate album tracks. Girl Overboard definitely would have been a very strong 4th single, a shame that didn't happen. Black Jacks was a really fun moment on the Tangled Up tour!
Ugh, the Tangled Up era was perfection

The lack of 'Long Hot Summer' on this album is criminal tbh! Definitely putting that on after this is over.
Hoxton Heroes is a definite b-side highlight! Glad this got a moment on CD2
I bought Can't Speak French on CD single (!!! - tbf I didn't dislike it as much at the time as I do now lmao) and Hoxton Heroes was such a good B-Side! I understand why it's a B-Side, but I honestly think it should've made TU! It coming right after Black Jacks is perfect and flows brilliantly tbh.

I love how this is such a middle finger up to music snobs who thinks guitars = real music or that you have to write your own music for it to be meaningful (despite songwriting and singing being totally separate talents).
It is funny hearing Cheryl singing "chart at 57" following the performance of 'Let You' though.
10 Memory of You
Memory of You is LUSH, too good to just be a b-side!
I actually only knew Nicola's solo version of this first (a b-side to Yo-Yo!) but I love both versions similarly tbh
Their b-sides are so good
One of their best B-sides! Another that I didn't realise wasn't sung by the whole group. Who would have thought Kimberley could lead on a Girls Aloud song? *.*
I don't think I appreciated Hoxton Heroes much in 2008, but I'm really enjoying this listen! It's so punchy, and those lyrics are so sassy and acerbic
Not Cheryl ending up having a #57 single of her own after singing "chart at 57" in this song
Memory of You Their best B Side imo! Only Kimberley and Nicola contribute vocals on this song. I think this might be Kimberley's shining moment in Girls Aloud tbh, outside of the Something Kinda Ooooh kink in your steel moment!
Fans were pissed that this was only available on the The Loving Kind picture disc. There were campaigns for it to be released properly! Thankfully just months later it became available via the Singles Box Set *.* I'm glad it was included on Ten so that it ended up having a home on streaming too.

Thank you so much for running this, Joseph a welcome reminder why Girls Aloud will always be one of my favourite groups of all-time.
Thoroughly enjoyed that - a trip down memory lane was just what was needed.
Thanks Joseph for hosting and thanks to all that contributed - Jay, your commentaries have been fantastic!
That was an incredibly enjoyable listening session Definitely a lovely reminder of why Girls Aloud are most definitely one of the greatest girl groups ever Thank you everyone for your contributions to this thread, it's been fun!
Hearing Long Hot Summer with Joseph and Jade now... this under-appreciated bop has aged surprisingly well! I distinctly remember at the time how it felt like it fell really flat with the public. Then Brian Higgins ended up throwing the song under the bus. I don't think this was deserved.
Long Hot Summer has aged like a fine wine *.*

sorry i missed out on this as so many songs here i love.
'Long Hot Summer' is a total classic, I loved it at the time and it remains one of their best.
I enjoyed reading through this thread, I'm gonna have to revisit their B-sides - also, totally forgot about 'Androgynous Girls'! I need to rediscover that beauty!
Also can I just say that 'Crazy Fool' >>>>> basically the entirety of Cheryl's solo career, and I wish it'd been more like that.
