BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Kelly Clarkson | Cancelled Singles

Posted by: Nina West Oct 8 2020, 03:50 PM

As we know, Kelly Clarkson has a long history of teasing us with single releases for songs that never end up seeing the light of day. Here are a few album tracks that were planned to be released as singles, but for whatever reason were cancelled.

You Thought Wrong (Thankful)

Kelly tried to get it to be ‘Thankful’s’ 3rd single after ‘Low’, but RCA chose ‘The Trouble with Love Is’ instead. It was then considered for a possible 4th or 5th single along with….

Just Missed The Train (Thankful)

This was planned along with ‘YTW’ again as a possible 4th or 5th single, but after ‘Low’ & ‘TTWLI’ flopped, all future releases were scrapped.

Addicted (Breakaway)

Kelly hinted that this would be ‘Breakaway’s’ 5th single on tour. It was scheduled for a radio release in late 2005. However, RCA decided it was too dark & did not want 2 dark themed singles in a row and scrapped it for ‘Gone’.

Gone (Breakaway)

Sent to radio in 2005 to test airplay response for ‘Breakaway’s’ 5th single. RCA later sent ‘Walk Away’ to radio as-well which got a better response & to avoid confusion with her earlier hit ‘Since U Been Gone’.

Sober (My December)

This was a single, but only in America where it bombed due to RCA not backing this with a lack of promo or music video & Clive Davis the head of Sony BMG didn’t even want the album released in the first place. Which is why this did not get an International release.

One Minute (My December)

Originally written for her 2nd album ‘Breakaway’ but was left off & kept for ‘My December’. Initially this was gonna be ‘MD’ lead single, but Kelly went for Never Again as she thought it showed a better departure.

Don't Waste Your Time (My December)

Sony BMG UK revealed that this was gonna be the 2nd UK single, but kept getting postponed due to the video not being ready. Nearing the date of October 29, 2007, "Don't Waste Your Time" was placed onto the "Coming Soon" list implying that the single will be released at a later time in the United Kingdom. The UK release of the single was scrapped, and it was never released in the United States.

Irvine (My December)

Kelly stated that this was one of her favourite tracks on the album & wanted to release it as a single at some point. But due to the underperformance of the album & previous singles, it was scrapped.

Cry (All I Ever Wanted)

The label RCA chose to release ‘Already Gone’ as the album’s 3rd single, but Kelly fought hard to release ‘Cry’ instead to avoid Beyonce’s hit ‘Halo’ controversy, both of which were written by Ryan Tedder & Kelly felt that they sounded too similar. ‘AG’ got released anyway, while ‘Cry’ saw a limited release in Australia & Germany.

If I Can't Have You/I Want You (All I Ever Wanted)

Kelly hinted that either ‘IICHY’ or ‘IWY’ would be the album’s 4th single after ‘Already Gone’ but went with the title track instead.

I Forgive You (Stronger)

On tour, Kelly hinted that this would be ‘Stronger’s’ 3rd single. The song started gaining airplay and saw international success. But Kelly later cancelled it in favour of releasing ‘Dark Side’ instead.

Dance With Me (Piece By Piece)

Originally written to be a single & collaboration for her Greatest Hits album. Kelly tried to get Pink, Lady Gaga & Jessie J on it, but got no reply. The song later made it to her ‘Piece by Piece’ album, where it was again considered for a possible release, but again was scrapped in favour of the other singles released.

Take You High (Piece By Piece)

Kelly wanted this or the title track to be the album’s 3rd single. In mid-late 2015, Kelly announced her second pregnancy & therefore ‘PBP’ was selected instead to pay tribute to her motherhood.

Medicine (The Meaning of Life)

Kelly announced that this would be the album’s 2nd single after ‘Love so Soft’ & tried promoting it on The Voice, but due to a lack of buzz, she later announced that ‘I Don’t Think About You’ instead.

What do u guys think of these choices?

Here's a spotify playlist I made below....

I would have chosen Addicted and Sober for singles, but not the others.

Cry really should have been released instead of Already Gone.

The Breakaway singles were strong but I would have traded the title track for You Found Me getting a moment to shine.

'Medicine' - should have been the 2nd single from 'MOL', it was probably the only track that had any chance of being an actual hit from that era.

'If I Can't Have You' - Would have made a better 2nd single than 'IDNHU'

Really gutted with how the MoL singles were handled. No MV for Heat etc.

Cry definitely should’ve been the ballad instead of Already Gone.

Sober is perfection.

If I Can’t Have You could’ve been a hit

MOL should have gone:

Medicine
Heat
--ALBUM RELEASE--
I Don't Think About You
Whole Lotta Woman > Kelly clearly LOVES this and it's a cute, fun throwaway song, that wouldn't have mattered whether it was a hit or not at this point in the campaign <

'Gone' & 'Addicted' wub.gif Could have and should have been singles, but the Breakaway era was still perfect cheeseblock.png

'Sober' not being released was a travesty! I didn't realise that DWYT was cancelled... I just assumed it performed really badly!

As much as I adore AG, the label should have listened to Kelly and gone with 'Cry' as the big ballad single from AIEW. 'If I Can't Have You' would have been a very good choice as a single as well. 'I Want You' however... keep it.

I didn't know 'I Forgive You' was in consideration!! Now I'm even more pissed at 'Dark Side''s release!!!! laugh.gif

'Dance With Me' is a BANGER. Would have been a hit! I love 'Take You High' too, that wouldn't have been an obvious single choice, but I think it could've paid off for her!

I didn't know about 'You Thought Wrong', a great third single... could've been a 'The Boy is Mine' moment.

I'm not sure if that's true about 'Irvine', she's never performed it and says its the saddest song she's ever recorded or written so I don't know how'd she promo it..

My December era was shocking.

At least we were spared Take You High and Dance With Me but the other tracks all would have made terrific singles.

Thankful: "You Thought Wrong" & "Just Missed The Train" - Both of these are okay, but wouldn't call them singles. Can't see either of these doing better than 'Low; or 'TTWLI' did.

Breakaway: This era was already perfect as it was & the 5 singles that were already released were perfect that really defined her career. Although both "Gone" & "Addicted" are really great album tracks. "Gone" would have probably given her another hit (if released as the 5th single), but 'WA' proved more popular & plus it probably would have suffered compared to 'SYBG'. "Addicted" on the other hand was probably a bit too heavy to work commercially when compared to 'BOY'.

My December: This era was done dirty by the label & wasn't given a chance. Although given the material there wasn't much in the way of commercial singles from this project & even if it was given better backing there was no-way this was ever gonna sell 'Breakaway' numbers. But "Sober" was amazing it showcases her writing skills brilliantly & should have had a video & some actual promo with a full proper release. "One Minute" may have worked it takes the classic pop/rock formula of Clarkson's eponymous hit 'SUBG' and adds a bit of sparkle and glitter to the proceedings. This may have had more radio play than the previous tracks. Then have "Don't Waste Your Time" as the final single (it already had a music video so why not).

All I Ever Wanted: Apart from the lead single, all the other single choices were bad. "If I Can't Have You" should have been the 2nd single, its far more fun & memorable than 'IDNHU'. "Cry" should have been the big ballad single from this era & would have avoided all that 'Halo' controversy & may have fared better in the UK. Then maybe have "Don't Let Me Stop You" as the 4th & final single (hell this could have worked as single #2 also), far more memorable than the title track.

So here's how I'd do the eras:

My December
Never Again
Sober
One Minute
Don't Waste Your Time

All I Ever Wanted
My Life Would Suck Without You
If I Can't Have You
Cry
Don't Let Me Stop You

This is getting a bit long I'll do the rest in another post...

Anyone who thinks ‘Already Gone’ is a poor single choice needs their ears cleaning
