Spain

Amaia & Alfred - Tu Canción

Posted by: rafik4u 19th January 2018, 11:44 AM

With Operacion Triunfo Spain obtained the best positions in the last 20 years in the early 2000s so this is definitely good news.

Copying this from the Eurovision website.

----

Spain's entrant in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest will come from the TV show 'Operación Triunfo'. This was announced by its presenter, Roberto Leal, in the seventh live show of TVE's talent show last Monday. It was the method used to select the Spanish entries from 2002 to 2004.

The talent show Operación Triunfo, also known in Spain as OT, premiered on the Spanish broadcaster, RTVE, in 2001 with the ultimate goal of being the method for selecting the Spanish entry in the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest. The method was used again in 2003 and 2004. Its outstanding success brought a new wave of interest in the Eurovision Song Contest in Spain, so the news revealed during this week's live show have been welcomed with enthusiasm.

Betting on talent

To participate in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in neighbouring Portugal, RTVE is looking for the best possible formula, a successful proposal that would generate excitement among viewers and fans of the contest.
Operación Triunfo is a successful format, and lauched the career of Rosa López who won the first edition of the contest. She achieved seventh place with Europe's Living A Celebration in 2002, Spain's best placing in the contest in fifteen years. The format also transformed the popularity of the Eurovision Song Contest in Spain which was followed by some 13 million viewers and more than 80% of market share.

OT is now back in the prime time of Spanish Television, after several years, last October, commited to discover new talent among young performers in Spain. It has proven to be successful phenomenon once again, and is helping to train a new generation of performers.
Unlike when it was first launched, the programme has become a format that generates an intense activity in social media - it has been the trending topic every day since its premiere- establishing an emotional bond with the audience and the support of the majority of Spanish 'eurofans'.
Further news on how the Spanish 2018 Eurovision Song Contest perfomer/s and song will be selected are set to be revealed in the coming weeks!

There are very good finalists, my 3 favourites below. The original songs are to be revealed next Tuesday 23rd January, one will be given to each finalist on Eurovision Final show on January 29th where the candidate and song will be chosen by public vote.

The favourite: Amaia

The Pop Idol: Aitana

The Eurovision Fan: Agoney

The demo versions/versions of the contestants rehearsing the songs are all out there (in a more easy to listen to format soon potentially, live performances will be on Monday 29th anyway). From what I've seen, this duet could be the one to beat (the two people singing it being both an off-screen couple and one of them being the favorite to win the whole thing).

Posted by: Ryan. 25th January 2018, 08:22 PM

Despite the massive Alfred & Amaia hype, there's now a significant challenge from Ana & Aitana following the first proper performances of each song (during rehearsals on their Fame Academy live stream). Both of these have views way ahead of the other performances, but interestingly it's the two girls that have nudged ahead:

It's going to be one of these two, but if the Spanish Eurofans rally behind the girls - their vote is usually decisive when it comes to a televote such is their intensity as a fan group.

Posted by: LexC 25th January 2018, 08:32 PM

Oooh interesting, I think I slightly prefer the duet between the two girls, sounds nice and modern and latino influenced without being a rip off of Despacito.

Posted by: rafik4u 28th January 2018, 01:39 PM

Aitana and Ana's rehearsal video (Lo Malo) only has more views because of the controversy over their reluctancy to sing Trap/Regueatton music. They were told off by the director of the academy live because of expressing that they did not feel identified with that music style.

There is no doubt the Alfred + Amaia duet will win tomorrow evening.

Second rehearsal (better than the first one in my opinion) of Tu Cancion below:

All 9 songs will be performed, of which 3 will advance to the superfinal. Both rounds will be determined by 100% televoting.

The favourites to win
There's not much in it in the betting odds, however the hype seems to be behind Amaia & Alfred. The two are in a relationship heavily followed by the viewers of Operación Triunfo. They've already reached #1 on Spanish iTunes after the songs were released at midnight, with another version at #8 and have the most views on YouTube.

Posted by: rafik4u 29th January 2018, 01:27 PM

So excited about this. It looks like Almaia & Alfred are actually going to dance a Waltz tonight which makes total sense as they keep repeating throughout the song "I feel like dancing for the first time".

'Lo Malo' is so catchy though. wub.gif

Operacion Triunfo is sort of Spain's "Star Academy" which was hugely sucessful in the early 00's and managed to get 3 top 10s in a row in Eurovision (2002, 2003 and 2004). The Spanish representative was chosen between the finalists of the reality.

This year return of OT has also been an audience success and once again one of their finalists (either alone or in a duet) will be sent to represent Spain in Eurovision.

Still no announcement from where I've looked, it must be going on midnight in Spain? laugh.gif

Alfred & Amaia win!

Posted by: Midge 30th January 2018, 12:48 AM

Hmmm not sure about this one. I guess it will grow though.

Lo Malo debuts directly at number one in Spotify Spain. Tu Cancion enters at number 2.

Clearly represents which song will be more successful in Spain in clubs/radio airplay/charts.

Posted by: Midge 30th January 2018, 02:53 PM

rafiki4u, you really think this has the qualities of a Eurovision winner?

Time will tell. It is quite similar to last year winner to be fair. Whether thats good or a bad thing.

Posted by: Styles Bilinski 30th January 2018, 11:30 PM

It is quite sweet but I am weeping for "Lo Malo". This doesn't sound like the right thing to capitalise on the success of "Despacito"/"Reggaeton Lento"/"Mi Gente" etc

Posted by: Liаm 30th January 2018, 11:33 PM

What a dull song :/

Posted by: Hide&Seek 31st January 2018, 02:11 PM

I wanted Lo Malo to win. Arde was my second choice. The winning song was my 3rd favourite, but they're all very strong.

Posted by: rafik4u 14th February 2018, 11:57 AM

Yesterday there was another "goodbye Operacion Triunfo" show and we had another performance of Tu Cancion. The performance keeps improving, they removed the pianos (thank god!) and the stage effects are better.

There was as well another performance of Lo Malo which is becoming the hit of the series, outselling Tu Cancion in downloads in Spain and already officially number #1 in Spain this week. Tu Cancion is at #3.

Posted by: LexC 7th March 2018, 12:48 PM

The final version of this is available http://www.rtve.es/television/20180307/escucha-ya-version-definitiva-cancion-amaia-alfred/1690980.shtml (along with a 30 second clip of the music video).

I have an odd feeling about this, either it's going to do about as well as Spain usually do or the whole "marketable heterosexuality" is going to capture people's imaginations and it's going to do really well.

Plus last time we had a really open year where the opera based fave failed to live up to expectations we had another slightly cringey duet go on to win the whole thing. I wonder.

Posted by: J▲hq 7th March 2018, 07:06 PM

Will forever be bitter that Lo Malo didn't get chosen but I am really coming round to this. If they don't hate each other in two months and can sell the love story, I reckon it'll do rather well (top 10 let's say, and I'd be really pleased for Spain as a country)

Posted by: Midge 7th March 2018, 11:40 PM

I really do think this is a lovely entry having not been impressed on first listen. Their voices sound great together and the melodies and harmonies are beautiful.

Posted by: Jonjo 8th March 2018, 04:43 PM

Ugh. Not here for this Portugal-2017 rip off, yawnfest.

Out of ALL the years for Spain to do a song like this... ughhh. Just imagine if they'd actually given us a genuine 'Despacito' type, current and on trend without sounding too much like it's chasing trends, Spanish jam... sad.gif

It really was the year of Lo Malo. It might have won if Aitana didn't have her solo song in the superfinal, effectively splitting her fanbase vote and allowing Alfred's and Amaia's to jointly push them to the win. Such a shame.

Lo malo is awful, the worst song in years. I am very proud of our song "Tu canción "

The final version is much better, more epic at the end. Perfect for the Eurovision final show. It remains top 10 (#9) in the paid bets.

This song is so beautiful wub.gif

But to be honest I think the Spanish version works A LOT better.

Posted by: JosephAvery 13th May 2018, 05:09 PM

I only heard Lo Malo yesterday and it is EVERYTHING, what a missed opportunity!!

(even if it's a total Shape of You rip-off)

Posted by: rafik4u 14th May 2018, 01:14 PM

Actually, it is much better what happened to Lo Malo to be honest. It's been number #1 in Spain since release week back in January, it is selling tons.

Posted by: Euphorique 14th May 2018, 03:21 PM

I assume there were far more spanish people in Lisbon's arena than portuguese, they got far more cheers than anybody else, including Portugal.

Lo Malo is amazing.

Tu Cancion es una de las peores de 2018, superada solo x Storm y Noruega. The Spanish entry was one of the three absolute worst. Really really bad.

Totally agree. Lo Malo is the hit of the moment by far in Spain, and probably the most successful song coming out of Spain in years. A total waste not sending it to Eurovision.

Tu Cancion was an embarrasment at the end. Not like there weren't worse songs (specially in the semifinals) but those 3 minutes were just...too much. Thank god we would not have to listen to it again. I hope TVE learned its lesson and stop sending representatives from Operacion Triunfo and return to the Eurovision national finals with all sort of independent artists.

Posted by: Vülker 17th May 2018, 02:46 PM

Can't agree enough. This was THE YEAR to send Lo Malo. Maybe it wouldn't have been a top 10 either (it would probably open the final) but it would've been iconic and a massive iTunes hit for the summer. [I'm still bitter it did so badly in BJSC]

Tu Cancion was basically Salvador's formula with 10kg of cheese on top. nocheer.gif

Posted by: Poldi_vigo 17th May 2018, 05:05 PM

Lo malo is AWFUL. You don't have taste in music. A song that discographic paid to radios, pathetic. For me you are analphabets in music

The results atm in BJSC are absolutely BIZARRE - based more on the person sending than the song

It should have been an alert winner tbh

100%! It would have at least been a La La Love type song that did ok but was huge afterwards.

The two best results coming from Spain in the recent years (both top 10) were with two powerful songs and great vocalists: Ruth Lorenzo and Pastora Soler that weren't in OT. I think they should go more in this direction that proved that works. OT success focuses on youth fan bases more than song quality or probability to do well in Eurovision. OT audience voted for Tu Cancion because Alfred (and specially) Amaia were the favourite contestants, not because it was the best song for Eurovision.
