I wonder if, more related to the opening example, if any other acts have scored a novelty hit single and then followed it up with a hit that is more serious/normal? Aqua did the reverse then? They had two novelty tracks and then one which was (at least meant to be taken) serious. |

True, and I expected a hugely varying set of responses as music taste is so subjective but thought it would be interesting to see nonetheless. I wonder if, more related to the opening example, if any other acts have scored a novelty hit single and then followed it up with a hit that is more serious/normal? Would you count Thrift Shop to Can't Hold Us? All About That Bass to Lips Are Movin'? Swagger Jagger to With Ur Love? The difference isn't quite as stark as #Selfie/Roses but they fit to some extent I think. |

Someone already mentioned it but Melanin C Goin Down to Northern Star was a collosal step up. In fact, everything on the Northern Star album was better than Goin Down - why she lead with that I'll never know....

I think it got 1 or 0 out of 10. |

That is probably my favourite negative NME review actually (closely behind is their review of Mel B's Hot). They slated pretty much every Spice Girls solo album that they bothered reviewing I think (The only exception being a 6/10 for Emma's first, I recall). |

La Roux - "In For The Kill" to "Bulletproof" This is definitely one for me too. Gabriella Cilmi 'Hearts Don't Lie' to 'Defender' The Kooks - 'Down' to 'Around Town' Kaiser Chiefs - 'Little Shocks' to 'Coming Home' Chris Brown - 'Kiss Kiss' to 'With You' Ting Tings - 'That's Not My Name' to 'Shut Up and Let Me Go' That's all I can think of right now! |

I think Macklemore Thrift Shop to Can't Hold Us as mentioned above is a great example, it was the one that immediately came to mind. Can't Hold Us is still played regularly in clubs etc.

Although I love it, I see people HATED 'Swagger Jagger' but loved 'With Ur Love'. Would that count?
Edit: just seen Riser suggested this already! |
