Regard, Troye Sivan and Tate McRae
You

Non-album single
Released: 16th April 2021
Label: Ministry of Sound Recordings

Biography

Regard
Origin stories are always more complex than they appear. Case in point: Dardan Aliu (a.k.a. Regard). When the Kosovar DJ’s deep-house remix of “Ride It” went viral on TikTok in 2019 (and was subsequently released as a single via Ministry of Sound), it seemed as if the newly anointed dance-music superstar had appeared out of nowhere. And although that frequently invoked framing possesses a great deal of truth, the fact is, Aliu was no newbie to house music. Born in 1993, the then 26-year-old already was a seasoned producer, one with a stack of well-crafted tracks under his belt (including the purring “Good Vibes”, which also dropped in 2019). So, yes, Aliu knew exactly what he was doing when he ingeniously transformed an 11-year-old ballad from R&B singer Jay Sean into a deliciously sleek house cut that nails the euphoria of a weekend beach party drenched in tropical-sunset hues. It’s a vibe into which he dives even deeper on the follow-up “Secrets”, another sensuously anthemic hit. Featuring the hushed vocals of RAYE, an electro-pop singer who has also collaborated with Jonas Blue and Jax Jones, the single manages to pick up where “Ride It” leaves off while at the same time gradually evaporating into a pulsating vapour. Aliu’s fame may have been meteoric and unexpected, but his effortlessly enticing tracks argue that it’s something for which he was always aiming. - Apple Music

Troye Sivan
Pop star Troye Sivan voices the concerns of the internet generation. The Australian actor, singer/songwriter and YouTuber, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1995, already displayed a natural command of the stage at just 11 years old, when he delivered his first of a series of much-lauded performances at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Channel Seven Perth Telethons. His ability to capture an audience won him views on social media, a platform he used to both propel his singing career and as a confessional; he came out publicly as gay via a YouTube video when he was 18 years old. His 2015 debut LP, Blue Neighbourhood, effortlessly landed him in the spotlight, with songs like “YOUTH” and “WILD” serving as the perfect introduction to his brand of sleek, honey-coated synth-pop. His follow-up, Bloom (2018), proved that he could also play well with others, namely pop titan Ariana Grande for their mesmerising duet, “Dance to This''. This knack for collaboration would have him working with a constellation of the era’s most talented stars like Charli XCX on 2018’s iconic throwback anthem “1999” and Lauv on 2019’s “i’m so tired…”, a groovy and relatable anti-pop song where both artists boldly claim to be “tired of love songs”. An icon of queer representation, Sivan has been open about his sexuality and has graciously used his platform to support other LGBTQ artists and causes. - Apple Music

Tate McRae
All it took for Tate McRae to make the jump from international dance phenom to teenage pop sensation was a viral YouTube video—and a whole lot of talent, of course. After spending most of her childhood racking up competitive-dance awards, as well as reaching the finals on the 13th season of the TV show So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, the young Canadian surprised fans by uploading an original song to her already popular channel. Titled “One Day”, the captivatingly emotional ballad garnered millions of views by the end of 2017. More YouTube clips soon followed, each one marrying artful alt-pop melodies to beats and effects inspired by hip-hop and R&B that very much mirror her dancing style, itself a fusion of conservatory training with cutting-edge street moves. Another key quality—and a timeless one when it comes to teen pop—is a disarming honesty born out of being young and insecure. Add up these ingredients, and the result is a sound that shares quite a lot in common with the innovative future-looking pop of Billie Eilish, who along with her brother and collaborator FINNEAS penned “Tear Myself Apart”, the aching lead single from McRae’s first EP for RCA, 2019’s all the things i never said. The following year, the vocalist scored another hit with the self-penned “you broke me first”, a ferociously honest tale of heartache that proves that although dancing is what put McRae on the map, it’s music that has propelled her to stardom. - Apple Music

Kygo featuring James Gillespie
Gone Are The Days

Non-album single
Released: 16th April 2021
Label: Kygo

Video

Biography

Kygo turned the dance-music world on its ear in the simplest way possible: by slowing down. The Norwegian producer (born Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll in 1991) cut his teeth crafting bootleg remixes of songs like Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die” and James Blake’s “The Wilhelm Scream”, fleshing out the originals with contrasting touches: EDM drops inspired by his fondness for Avicii and ruminative melodies reflective of his childhood piano studies. In 2013, layering an a cappella of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” over dancing marimbas and a teasingly measured 4/4 beat, he hit upon his slow-motion signature. The following year, he was called up to replace an ailing Avicii on Tomorrowland’s main stage, and his relaxed, sunny vibe stopped EDM’s harder-faster-louder ethos in its tracks. Kygo’s dreamy, pioneering tropical house—encapsulated in singles like the lilting “Firestone” and his even-more-weightless remix of a-ha’s “Take On Me”—cast its influence across the pop music landscape, reaching as far as Skrillex, Diplo and Justin Bieber’s smash, “Where Are Ü Now”, and securing Kygo collabs with Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Miguel and Imagine Dragons. - iTunes

Biography

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex, and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Like the work of collaborator Lana Del Rey or early booster (and fellow Toronto native) Drake, Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy, and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” - Apple Music

I wonder if Nathan Dawe, Anne-Marie & MoStack will enter the chart today?

Doesn’t look like it, he’s named the 3 new entries and they aren’t included.

I don't mind hearing Blinding Lights again wub.gif

Out of the #1 contenders, I'm hoping Lil Nas X can hold on.

I wouldn't be totally against Bed but I think Lil Nas X has the better song.

I'm hoping it isn't Peaches though kink.gif

Biography

Wes Nelson
22-year-old Staffordshire born Wes Nelson has just released his brand new single, See Nobody. A glossy, confident, effortlessly charming track that is centered around a ridiculously melodic hook, written by Wes and produced by Ayo Beatz [Fredo, Dutchavelli, Young M.A]. Featuring rap star Hardy Caprio, the super smooth Afrobeat-meets-R&B single brilliantly showcases Wes’s considerable talents as a vocalist and songwriter. - Spotify

Yxng Bane
East London-born rapper Yxng Bane specializes in dancehall-infused R&B, but doesn't shy away from blending genres from across the board. Bane first appeared online in 2015, when he began uploading tracks to SoundCloud; the play counts quickly rose, giving him a platform to make music videos. At first, Bane was reluctant to reveal his identity, choosing to hide his face behind a mask. However, the mask was eventually removed, revealing his face to the public for the first time in the video for "Lone Wolf/Pronto," which saw release in the run-up to his debut EP, 2016's Full Moon. The following year, Bane geared up for the release of his next project, Bane of My Existence (aka B.O.E.), leading with the single "Fine Wine" in collaboration with Kojo Funds. 2018 proved to be a banner year for Bane with numerous collaborations including his feature on the Banx & Ranx and Ella Eyre hit "Answerphone" and the release of Any Minute Now, a collaborative full-length with D-Block Europe. He capped on his impressive year with his own mixtape, HBK. - Apple Music
