Now That's What I Call Music! 48 aka Now 48 was the spring release of 2001. It contained 41 tracks and 6 UK #1 singles. It would be the final of a short lived selection of volumes to be released on mini disc format. Now 48 received some public attention in April 2017 when it featured prominently on an episode of the BBC television series Peter Kay's Car Share as being the favourite album by main character Kayleigh Kitson. From this volume, we were introduced for the first time to Hear'Say, Nelly Furtado, Gorillaz, Bob The Builder, Eva Cassidy, Feeder, Jakatta and Joe who would all go on to feature again in the series.

There were quite a few UK #1's overlooked for this volume including Destiny's Child – Independent Women (Part 1), Eminem – Stan, Rui Da Silva feat. Cassandra – Touch Me, Jennifer Lopez – Love Don't Cost A Thing, Limp Bizkit – Rollin' and Westlife – Uptown Girl (though this was saved for a later volume). There was also no room for Pop Your Collar from Usher or Craig David's Top 10 hits Walking Away and Rendezvous. Other hits by All Saints, Mis-Teeq, Dido and Crazy Town were also omitted.

This was the only time in the series there were appearances by Chocolate Puma, Kaci, Papa Roach, Planet Funk, Safri Duo, Mya and Chantι Moore.

Artwork Rating: 4/10 Poor
Not really anything special. Lack of colour and imagination in this design. Still seems very bright which is nice, but I just feel this was one of those rushed designs with little thought going into what the concept would be. This same design (with different colours) was used again later that same year too.

Disc 1 Favourite: Shaggy feat. Ricardo "RikRok" Ducent – It Wasn't Me
A guilty pleasure! This comedic song was a favourite growing up, just because I liked Shaggy and his music, and this music video was quite funny. Probably my favourite Shaggy song, along with Angel.

Disc 2 Favourite: Texas – Inner Smile
Just love this one from Texas. It really uplifts me and I love Sharleen's soaring vocals.

Disc 3 Tracklist:
(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Destiny's Child – Independent Women (Part 1) 3:40 {1}
2. Jennifer Lopez – Love Don't Cost A Thing 3:12 {1}
3. Usher – Pop Ya Collar 3:36 {2}
4. Crazy Town – Butterfly 3:35 {3}
5. Limp Bizkit – Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle) 3:34 {1}
6. Muse – Plug In Baby 3:40 {11}
7. Ash – Shining Light 4:08 {8}
8. Robbie Williams – Supreme 4:15 {4}
9. Spooks – Things I've Seen 3:21 {6}
10. All Saints – All Hooked Up 3:47 {7}
11. Craig David – Walking Away 3:23 {3}
12. Toploader – Dancing In The Moonlight 3:29 {7}
13. Backstreet Boys – The Call 3:24 {8}
14. Mis-Teeq – Why? 3:21 {8}
15. Genius Cru – Boom Selection 2:40 {12}
16. Oxide & Neutrino – No Good 4 Me 3:17 {6}
17. M&S Presents The Girl Next Door – Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna) 3:28 {6}
18. Rui Da Silva feat. Cassandra – Touch Me 3:27 {1}
19. Mauro Picotto – Komodo (Save A Soul) 2:33 {13}
20. Anastacia – Not That Kind 3:20 {11}
21. Dido – Here With Me 4:05 {4}
22. Eminem – Stan 6:44 {1}
----------
Total time: 1:19:59

Overall Rating: 5/10 Poor
There's too many songs on this volume which are all but forgotten today. So many great songs were missed off and could have been used to replace those lesser known songs. There's also indication from the total time of the volume that there could have been room for one or two more tracks too. It's not the most memorable volume for me and the artwork is rather plain too.

Andrew's Best 5 (as of July 2017)
1. Shaggy feat. Ricardo "RikRok" Ducent – It Wasn't Me
2. Texas – Inner Smile
3. Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood (Ed Case/Sweetie Iris Refix)
4. Eva Cassidy – Somewhere Over The Rainbow
5. Steps – It's The Way You Make Me Feel

Andrew's Worst 5 (as of July 2017)
1. Architechs – Show Me The Money
2. DJ Luck & MC Neat – Piano Loco
3. Damage – Still Be Lovin' You
4. Papa Roach – Last Resort
5. Joe – Stutter

A fairly good now, with disc 2 being way better than disc 1. I went for Steps (closely followed by Fragma) and Jakatta (closely followed by Planet Funk).

Fun fact: when the Peter Kay madness of a few months ago happened and second hand copies were going for as much as £30, I picked up a copy cheaply from a local charity shop and sold it on on eBay for £22. Result biggrin.gif

Recent profit making aside, very much a Now of two halves this. I had an easier time picking my disc 1 favourites if I'm honest, but here goes...

CD1
1. Gorrilaz (I was obsessed with their first album, and always preferred the Ed Case mix that featured here. I suspect this would've been a number one were it not for the amount of huge selling chart toppers around that time - Hear'Say, Shaggy etc)
2. S Club 7 (beautiful Cathy Dennis penned ballad, and stunning lead vocal from Jo. A well deserved second number one)
3. Steps (along with One for Sorrow and Deeper Shade of Blue, in my holy triumvirate of great Steps singles)
4. Samantha Mumba (I always felt it such a shame Samantha Mumba only lasted for one album. Every single she bought out was a great pop record and this was no exception)
5. Emma Bunton (in a year overstuffed with solo Spice Girl releases, one of the best by far. A nice summer-y sounding effort and great introduction to Emma as a solo artist - although her second album was a real blinder. More on that when we get to the 2003 Nows)

CD2
1. Coldplay (one of my all time favourite songs by them, love Chris Martin's vocal on this and the whole sentiment and feeling of the song. I still don't know why Parlophone didn't just chuck it out as a single here anyway, everything they touched was turning to gold, and it would have been a huge top 10 regardless. See also: The Verve's non single 'Sonnet' on Now 40)
2. Texas (Sharleen Spiteri has long been one of my favourite singers. Her performance on this single is the reason why)
3. Jakatta (one of the more unusual dance records of the time, and still sounds different now)
4. Feeder (unquestionably one of the best singles by a British rock band ever. That build up to the 'It's got a CD PLAYER PLAYER PLAYER bit in particular is immense)
5. Mya (As with Gorrilaz, I suspect this could've been a number one here were it not for the vast amount of huge sellers still doing well at the time this got released)

Some good disc 3 choices, awardinary (Spooks - Things I've Seen! That was such a tune). I can think of several that would've been good inclusions also:

- A1 - Same Old Brand New You
- Dane Bowers - Shut Up...And Forget About It
- Melanie C - If That Were Me
- Boom - Falling
- BBMak - Back Here 2001
- Sugababes - New Year
- Wu-Tang Clan - Gravel Pit

Disc 1 fave: Shaggy - It Wasn't Me
Disc 2 fave: Safri Duo - Played-A-Live (The Bongo Song)

Not a vintage edition (despite what we were led to believe with all the press coverage earlier this year!) but I went with Fragma on Disc 1 and Dario G on Disc 2, both of which I bought on CD single on the day of release.

Obviously loads of huge hits on here which was nice as 2000 had been sorely lacking in that department, but there were indeed some curious songs missing.

Taking into accounts rights issues of the time, the following of the suggested songs definitely should have been eligible to appear:

Ash – Shining Light 4:08 {8}
Robbie Williams – Supreme 4:15 {4}
All Saints – All Hooked Up 3:47 {7}
Craig David – Walking Away 3:23 {3}
Backstreet Boys – The Call 3:24 {8}
Mis-Teeq – Why? 3:21 {8}
Rui Da Silva feat. Cassandra – Touch Me 3:27 {1}
Anastacia – Not That Kind 3:20 {11}

Touch Me (which was on a Now Dance album at the time), Supreme and Walking Away were very odd snubs in particular.

What's with this being worth £30?

Well as awardinary pointed out because of it's use in the Peter Kay sitcom earlier this year, second hand copies became hot property especially given it was out of print. It was actually outselling the current Now volume on Amazon at one point! It made me a tidy profit anyway biggrin.gif

I never knew that!

We are only one Now away from my favourite ever (Now 49) so excuse me while I write alot for the next one biggrin.gif

Crazy what can create demand! I think the only other instance before of this of a Now selling so much on the second hand market is Now 30, as it was one of the the only places to find Oasis' "Whatever" which wasn't on any of their studio albums.

Pete Kay's Car Share made me look at this thread first in this subforum! laugh.gif. Not only that, but a lot of the songs on in here I bought as singles, and in some cases their parent albums. 2001 being a 12 year old was when I first started buying music, so this compilation is quite a "Good old days" thing for me.

Why was Salsoul Nugget not on it!

My faves from both cds are both trance records.

Fave from Disc1 - Fragma ft Maria Rubia - Everytime You Need Me - remember hearing this in a train station in Glasgow during a school trip at the time, brings back good memories.

Samantha Mumba - Always Come Back To Your Love comes close though. Samantha Mumba's songs are very good and I remember them from the time.

Fave from Disc 2 - Dario G - Dream To Me - Great if cheesy dance version of The Cranberrys' track, and very nostalgic hearing it now, especially as I do remember it from the time.
