We have quite a few Sugaversaries this month, so it's time to have a bit of reflection.
First up is the double A-side, Stronger/Angels With Dirty Faces (November 11, 2002) turning 15 - although, as much as the Xenomania-produced Angels is a pleasant enough track, Stronger was always the main single, wasn't it?. Released as the third single from Angels With Dirty Faces, it went Top 10 in the UK, Netherlands, Noway and Belgium, as well as attaining Top 40 positions in Ireland, Germany, Australia, Sweden, New Zealand, Switzerland and Denmark. It was also chosen for their Live8 performance in 2005, and is a clear favourite (both within the band, and with the general public) from their extensive back catalogue. Next up is Easy's 11th birthday (November 6, 2006) - the lead single from the band's first compilation album, Overloaded (also turning 11 this month!) It's fair to say this track received a mixed response, with many fans expecting considerably more for the launch of Overloaded: the supposed 'celebration' of such an exciting discography. The track peaked Top 10 in the UK - closely missing out on a Top 5 position thanks to the staggered digital/physical release - and was a sizeable hit in Europe, peaking Top 40 in Austria, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland and Sweden. Easy was released during the same week as Mutya's duet with George Michael (This Is Not Real Love, #15 UK) - a fairly 'low-key' campaign, given the lack of music video or televised/radio performances. Regardless of Easy's reception, however, Overloaded was a solid UK seller (x2 platinum). Although, it must be said that, had there been a stronger lead track, a second single, and a better appreciation of the former band members in their promotional campaign (that artwork...), it's likely that Overloaded would have far exceeded this performance (particularly in Europe, where it was largely unappreciated). Finally, we have About A Girl (November 8, 2009), which turned 8 years old yesterday. Fans tend not to have the fondest memories of the Sweet 7 era, but of the 3 singles, I'd say this is the most tolerable (verging on rather enjoyable, in all honesty!). Scrap the RedOne shoutout, and you have a perfectly acceptable 'Sugababes' single. About A Girl managed a Top 10 position in the UK, but outwith Poland (where they had a mini promo campaign), it flopped in European markets. Had the original Keisha plans went ahead, I have no doubts that this would've been a much bigger hit. As things stand, it's not too far off 200k sales, which isn't that bad, considering the general disaster of Sweet 7. |

I can’t believe how old some of these tracks are. Like it doesn’t feel like 11 years since Easy was released. I cannot believe it

Scary stuff! I mean, Overload being 17 years old - I can sort of deal with that because it seems like 1.0 were soooo long ago. But when it comes to the more 'recent' stuff, I can't get my head around how much time has passed. Sweet 7 was almost 8 years ago!

Sleazy is one of their worst track. I guess Get Shitty can compete for that honour.

Well, if I ever wanted to feel my age, the anniversaries of Sugababes and Spice Girls material is certainly doing it to me.

December 15th marks 14 years since the release of Too Lost In You. It's become one of their classic tunes, and the most consistent catalogue seller.

Oh is that not what y’all call them over the pond?
Completely off topic but I’m sure you’ll appreciate it. England got its first Tim Hortons today, first drive through in the UK, and it’s not far from me so I’m now caffeinated and doughnutted up Canadian style! |

February marks 8 years since the release of Wear My Kiss. The single caused a bit of uproar amongst fans, but still managed a Top 10 position in the UK and Ireland. Thoughts? Are we feeling nostalgic? |
