Sunday Chart Predictions
Predicting the 21/12 to 27/12 chart

Does Ben have that something you need to go all night?
It's Christmas Chart Week and following the announcement that Ben Haenow was the winner of the 11th series of X Factor, his cover of OneRepublic's 'Something I Need' is favourite to reach the famous Christmas #1. The race seems incredibly quiet in comparison to previous years, with charity single 'All Together Now' by The Peace Collective and Facebook campaign song 'Number of the Beast' by Iron Maiden not performing as well on iTunes as expected. Also, considering the amount of physicals shifted last week, it doesn't seem likely that Band Aid 30 will sell enough to beat Ben Haenow and return to #1. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' 'Uptown Funk' should only fall to #2 this week with further big sales whilst Olly Murs/Demi Lovato's 'Up' and Gorgon City/Jennifer Hudson's 'Go All Night' should accompany them in the Top 10. The former was performed on the X Factor final, along with Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me', One Direction's 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go?' and Ed Sheeran's 'Photograph' which all look set to climb/enter the Top 40.

In the albums, Ed Sheeran should remain at #1 with possibly over 200k sales - which would be a record high for 2014 replacing, well, himself. Last week's Top 10 should stay relatively the same with even bigger sales, with the highest new entry probably coming from Nicki Minaj's third album The Pinkprint followed by 5 Seconds of Summer's live album LIVESOS and D'Angelo & The Vanguard's Black Messiah.

Is that an actual new album from D'Angelo then? I thought there'd have been more fuss about that.

Posted by: BuzzLightyear Dec 16 2014, 12:06 AM

1. X Factor single
2. Uptown Funk
3. Up

Nicki Minaj is currently number 2 on itunes album charts but my guess is Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith will top the album charts

I hope it's Nicki Minaj or Sam Smith. I'm bored of seeing Ed Sheeran at number 1

Unless Nicki's album is planning on being sold to 200k+ this week, it's not going to be #1! tongue.gif

Posted by: mr_aly Dec 16 2014, 01:37 AM

I don't see Nicki's album charting very high at all.

Gorgon City should be safe for top 10 this week.

No it's MW's office party. So no midweeks on Friday.

Am I right in believing that Up's actual official release in terms of having a digital EP or whatever format it will be released in isn't actually until this Sunday/next week? I think it will climb to #4 this week; obviously Ben and Mark/Bruno will be in the top two but Ed has several versions of TOL charting as well as those ever high streams despite Up being higher on iTunes. These Days should complete the top five.

Ed Sheeran #1 in albums easily with way over 200k+ also easily; I actually think some members could be potentially surprised at how much he will sell. Sam #2; as previously stated this week's top ten will pretty much be the same as last week although I wouldn't count Paloma Faith climbing back in out.

Nicki will start off higher in midweeks and then erode as the week progresses. It's a shame -- her album is excellent and ten times better than the mess that was Roman Reloaded, but she couldn't have chosen a worse time to release and the album doesn't have a current hit to hype it. Low top twenty at best I think, potentially top thirty. Remember when Britney Jean was at 1 on iTunes last December yet it flopped badly in the end and mislead people into thinking it could chart higher than expected? I foresee a very similar situation here.

Posted by: slowdown73 Dec 16 2014, 12:08 PM

I really hope Mark Ronson can hold on at number one but I think its incredibly unlikely. Nicki Minaj won't make album number one. She doesn't have enough widespread appeal. She will fade as the week progresses. I hope Take That can stay top 5 in the singles.

Posted by: madollar Dec 16 2014, 12:42 PM

So we are looking at

Singles

1 Ben Haenow
2 Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars
3 Olly Murs/Demi Levato
4 Ed Sheeran
5 Take That

Albums

1 Ed Sheeran
2 Sam Smith
3 Olly Murs

Sam Smith's album In The Lonely Hour and single Stay With Me both set to pass 1 million before the end of the year, surely?

Posted by: Sunday Dec 16 2014, 01:02 PM

Twitter Mint Royale

I wonder how many copies Ben Haenow has sold so far.

74,663 copies!

There's a chance the winners single might be pushed to no. 2 by a record that was only released because it was performed on the Xfactor.
Simon Cowell may have actually knackered his winner's chance of a number 1.

It all depends on how much of a first day bump Ben Haenow got, if he tails off Uptown Funk isn't that far behind and selling well.

Sheeran sold 54,647 albums yesterday,

'In The Lonely Hour' should pass a million sometime this week.

So Ben has only sold 75k? Thats catchable with streams!!

Posted by: mr_aly Dec 16 2014, 01:08 PM

I won't believe Ben not being #1 is a possibility until I see it happen.

Posted by: gooddelta Dec 16 2014, 01:11 PM

Ben's physicals will negate Mark's streaming impact.

Posted by: steve201 Dec 16 2014, 01:11 PM

Surely he has sold more than that? If it decreases before Thursday UF has a real chance imo.

Although I'd like that prospect,it still means a big lead over no. 2,how can that change? It's unlikely.

Posted by: britboy Dec 16 2014, 01:20 PM

75,000 copies is pretty good. The viewing figures were the lowest this year so he isn't doing too badly. With physicals it is likely to get to 200k perhaps more and Sam Bailey only managed 150,000. It also has a chance of beating Little Mix who sold 210,000.

Posted by: n4yr Dec 16 2014, 01:25 PM

Sam Bailey's first day sales were 45k, so Ben will surely outdo her 150k.

187K for the first 24 hours after X Factor finished that series.

Impossible was a great choice of song and he was a very popular winner until he messed things up. I think it was one of the longest top 40 runs for an XF winner - it was still top 40 until March the following year - in comparison to the rest which are in the bargin bins before January's out!

I don't think Nicki will fall out of the top 30, she hasn't started falling on itunes yet, I think she'll manage around #18ish. Since 5 Seconds of summer will be very digital-based I reckon they *could* fall out of the top 30.

I wonder if the xmas songs will have peaked with the pre 20th Dec lull then the rise will be negated next week by the dramatic 25th dec onwards fall? Peaks might be a bit lower than last yr when we had a full week build up in sales sad.gif

He normally rises as the week goes on in downloads (got to No22 on itunes last week) and he didnt drop further than No40 at the start of this week so this added to streams *could* mean he might be in the upper reaches of the top 30 (20-25) by Sunday.

Makes sense Amazon sales being missing - I imagine Ben will be 30k ahead then plus cd sales to come!

51.5k seems absolutely HUGE for Uptown Funk given that it sold around 35k in its first 30 hours last week just after the hype. ohmy.gif Shockingly high, but extremely pleased -- it's a flawless song.

I agree, its streaming has fallen badly and the download is just about top 40 on itunes.

You should check out the live lounge from this morning. I thought it would help him alot more. He performed it & a new xmas song he had just written which i have high hopes of support next year perhaps if its on his new album?! Youd love it since you like him alot.

Tom i think is on Alan Carr or Graham this week too?!

The advert's getting barely any rotation too which is such a shame sad.gif

Ooh thanks for reminding me about that! ohmy.gif I must have a listen, excited to hear a new track from him! And yes, he's on one of the chat shows this week which is a good sign, hopefully it can give Real Love a bit of a boost.

John Lewis can't have paid for as much advertising space this year, which is quite odd considering every store is kitted out with a floor full of Monty the Penguin merchandise that they surely will want to shift.

Looking at other new entries, Peace Collective and OneRepublic's version of Something I Need is not that far away from the 40, but the former will probably trail off, Coldplay are top 70 with Miracles and the new track from Sia.

It's very odd! The Monty toys are so popular still, I've not managed to get my hands on one yet, and the advert was trending on Twitter for several days. Shame it's not been on TV much. sad.gif

Maybe they thought they didn't need to air it as much this year because it gets so much free promo from people tweeting it/internet hype. Still seems weird but I'm sure John Lewis are selling lots of stuff which at the end of the day matters more to them than whether Real Love is a massive hit or not.

They seem to be showing a 15 second long short version of the advert, mostly.

As i said the first week of december sees the xmas songs gaining alot but there is always a mid december lull until around 19/20th when the rise again. Unfort xmas week is early this year so the xmas songs prob wont rise much this week and next weeks gains will be tempered by the fact they will all free fall from 25th dec onwards. Last year was perfect as we had a whole week build up to xmas day so had maximum sales for the xmas tracks within one week!

Well, Amazon sales for yesterday are missing, so he's likely a bit higher (He's #1 there). Plus I assume this midweek includes streaming, if so he's got a 20k+ lead despite it. Ben's lead should increase in the next few midweeks. Especially when his physical is released on Wednesday.

Although saying that, I wouldn't be surprised if "Uptown Funk" goes to #1 next week, only giving him one week at the top.

X Factor Winners' Tuesday Update Sales (2008-14)
187,000 James Arthur - Impossible (2012)
150,000 Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah (2008)
112,000 Matt Cardle - When We Collide (2010)
77,000 Joe McElderry - The Climb (2009)
75,000 Ben Haenow - Something I Need (2014)
69,000 Little Mix - Cannonball (2011)
45,000 Sam Bailey - Skyscraper (2013)

I tried finding data for 2004-7 but there was apparently an issue with data for Leon Jackson so he was missing from 2007's Xmas Week Tuesday Update and the rest had really contrasting figures: Leona either sold 88k or 101k on the Tuesday Update and Shayne either sold 46k or 313k! laugh.gif Hopefully Gezza can help out there as he'll have a much better idea than me!

Happy to! biggrin.gif

As downloads were much smaller in 2005 I'd be inclined to give Shayne Ward the 313k as that was the first day of the CD release. Leona was indeed 101k for the first day on downloads alone in a stronger download market. Leon Jackson sold a mere 36,000 on his first day making him the slowest starter on the list, Steve Brookstein did 37,000 on his first day which was CD only.

It really was crazy then so bearing that in mind, Ben having the same on day 1 (if not more than Joe with missing data) is pretty good. The song seems to be going down well and getting a lot of airplay so hoping it sticks around a bit. Its my fav XF winners song after Alexandra and Hallelujah. Good choice for him.

Hard to say but I think he might sell quite a few, Christmas pressies and they seem to be displayed right by the tills in the Supermarkets. I've seen loads of tweets today saying they have just bought it on his Twitter timeline and this tweet too (yes it only one but if replicated could be quite a big number) Its different to any other physical in that its just not a single it performances from the show so fans who have already bought the download may buy this too. There was never any real chance of Ben Haenow not getting the Christmas #1, even the lower selling winner's singles have had first week sales out of reach of nearly all normal singles (maybe if Ben was on course to do as badly as Sam Bailey he *could* have been beaten by Mark Ronson but he's clearly doing better, not surprisingly as he does have considerably more appeal to the music downloading public) and none of the other charity singles or campaign songs attracted anywhere near enough attention to be in with a shout.

Indeed both the top 2 will sell very well - 125-150k for UF & 200-250k for Ben! Bens Cd sales won't be massive but I suspect Band Aid sold poorly because people haven't taken to the song at all.

Next weeks singles chart will be interesting with half a week of decent Ben sales then the gift card effect will massively benefit Uptown Funk!

ALBUMS

Ed Sheeran looks set for a Happy X-mas this year as he is on course to continue his reign atop the Official Album Chart this week.

The million-selling X is currently Number 1 on today’s Album Chart Update, with a lead 35,000 copies on his closest competitor, Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour. If he holds on to his current position, it will give Ed his 11th non-consecutive week at the top.

Meanwhile, Olly Murs is at 3 with his former chart-topping album Never Been Better, George Ezra’s Wanted On Voyage is at 4, and Take That’s III completes the Top 5.

New entries and high climbers

Michael Buble’s Christmas album climbs to Number 7 in today’s Update, and Paloma Faith’s A Perfect Contradiction continues its ascent back up the chart thanks to its repack, currently placed at Number 12.

Further down the chart, Nicki Minaj is this week’s highest new entry at Number 17 with her third studio album The Pinkprint. The album follows 2012’s chart-topping Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and includes the Top 5 single Anaconda and new track Bed of Lies.

Elsewhere, Aussie band 5 Seconds Of Summer debut at 21 with their first live album LiveSOS, Ed Sheeran’s + re-enters the Top 40 at 39, and D’Angelo’s first album in 14 years Black Messiah is currently just outside the Top 40 at 41.

The Official Singles Chart Update Top 40 is as follows. The Official Singles Chart Top 100 will be posted in full, here, on Sunday at 7pm.

As an aside:

Internet sensation The Wealdstone Raider is a surprise new entry overnight in the Top 40 with Got No Fans.

Gordon Hill - AKA The Wealdstone Raider - has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2014 Official Christmas Number 1.

The viral star, who shot to fame on YouTube after mocking his football rivals’ lack of fans and threatening to “give some” to an opposition fan, has entered the Top 40 today at Number 37 with Got No Fans, after being outside of the Top 200 yesterday.

Ben Haenow on 107k and Mark/Bruno on 74k!

If those Ed Sheeran sales from Twitter are true (that account usually is) then Sam Smith is on 53k, 35k behind Ed.

I'm really impressed at how well Gorgon City are doing, after how badly 'Unmissable' did and this song didn't really seem like a hit in waiting to me, especially in Christmas week. I suppose it has a more well-known guest vocalist but Jennifer Hudson is hardly a MASSIVE name, having never made the top 10 before.

Posted by: MistleJoe. Dec 17 2014, 04:06 PM

Great to see Bruno and Mark hopefully making it to 100k again this week!
Gutting for Cheryl not to have made it back into the top 40 albums over Christmas! Shocked by this, what a flop for her.

Nicki sad.gif Hopefully this manages to scrape the top 25 and doesn't go like Union J's last album or Britney Jean. Is it really doing that bad on physicals (been #4 all day on iTunes)?

shame about lack of LM sales as that would've made a good comparison. I think Ben should be able to outsell their first week anyhow. At least it won't do a Sam Bailey

67,400 Sam Bailey "Skyscraper"
107,000 Ben Haenow "Something I Need"

Presumably they're not. But aside from the 600k or so that own that and the 150k(?) that have already downloaded the song, that leaves a good 63 million+ people left to potentially buy it!

Strange to see it finally becoming a hit, it just seems completely ancient to me now. Very happy about it though.

Maybe not that well, perhaps a '1' or two taken off the end there. Of course it's dependent on the competition and upcoming releases. I can see Meghan's next one getting a #2 or #3 for some reason thinking.gif

Posted by: ► ▲ N T ▲ Dec 17 2014, 05:43 PM

I definitely think Meghan Trainor has a shot at #1 so I a 1-2-1-1-1-1-2- run looks very likely for Uptown Funk.

Posted by: TomJ1991 Dec 17 2014, 05:46 PM

Of the two "Over 25s" winners of X Factor, these have been their first week sales:

Steve Brookstein - 127,701
Sam Bailey - 149,000

With this in mind, Ben should do far better than both. He's probably helped by the fact he's at least 7 years younger than both previous over 25 winners.

Ben Haenow had a 33,000 lead over Mark Ronson, i cant see Ben losing the Christmas Number 1 as he is still at number 2 on iTunes with physicals to back him up. I would see as a worst result of Ben selling 30,000 cd singles and that will secure him the Christmas Number 1.

Yeah I'm thinking when we get today's update he will be further ahead as Physicals went on sale yesterday and he was still #1 on iTunes all day yesterday as well. I hope he does it. He is performing on ITV Text Santa on Friday night which may give him a boost and I think being the last Saturday before Christmas he will shift a fair few physicals there too. There's no point hoping. It's a foregone conclusion that Ben will be #1 this week sadly with the lead he has right now and presumably he's doing well on physical sales.

Uptown Funk should easily go back to #1 next week and stay there for a while though, it's clearly the Happy of this/next year although whether it will be the biggest selling song of 2015 remains to be seen.

114,009 copies of Ed Sheeran's album sold so far this week. It's only Thursday. You people.

Hi betting fans, Ben Haenow is still on for xmas number 1.

Thanks Sunday. Phenomenal sales for Ed Sheeran steam rolling all the Xmas releases.

Ben may have physicals to back him up but Mark has streaming to back him up. If we was allowed to manipulate the charts, I'm sure a lot of people would be overstreaming "Uptown Funk"

Wow? A lot of people are getting that Ed album in their stockings this year!

Also don't forget the little trick from the xfactor people to add the charity component to the single, instead of making a separate charity single as in some previous series.

Surely this is a contradiction in terms?

Good grief. First your absolute insistence that Nicki Minaj would have the #1 album this week, then that twaddle about how only people who own the NOW album are buying the Hozier track and then this.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on music and charts. As for Nicki Minaj, she won't get #1 album. She'd be lucky to make it top 10 on album downloads

Just one piece on the OCC website about the Wealdstone Raider now being #13.

Posted by: MrIndependent Dec 18 2014, 02:01 PM

But charts are not based on opinions. They are based on matter of fact circumstances and when analysing where an album may be placed we can look at several things: Nicki does not have a current hit to support her record, there is zero interest in the project, and you only have to look at Roman Reloaded's 47k debut coming off the back of a huge hit like Starships to know that she wasn't going to sell anywhere near as much as you predicted. This week 47k will more than likely not even get you into the top ten, so even if she did have a Starships-sized hit it would still chart far away from #1 what with the Christmas period effect. She probably will not be top twenty on Sunday.

I can't even comment on your logic on streaming because one person's behaviour would not impact the charts. In order for someone to 'overstream' a song they would have to listen to it for hours on end. There is not the time in the day and realistically how many people are going to do that anyway?

I do not understand why people are thinking "we're sick of Simon Cowell's crap music; we'll get a crap song into the charts as a protest!" It's poor logic, at best. As for the "it's for charity" argument, just give £1 to charity. That will raise more money than whatever cut of the profits this raises for charity, after iTunes takes a cut.

Eh, it's about time that we get a hit song which mentions both Pitbull and Gemma Collins in one verse.

Yeah I don't think anyone buying it is specifically aiming to get a 'crap song' to #1... laugh.gif It obviously isn't your thing but the original Wealdstone Raider video was apparently very popular and it's just a novelty record off the back of that, nothing more than a bit of fun (and if it's raising some money for charity as well then all the better).

George Ezra doing very well in the albums, i like him but would prefer to see Olly Murs and Take That ahead of him. 5 seconds of Summer are falling fast, i expected bigger performance for them with it been Christmas, that said live albums are not always the best of sellers.

Olly and Demi continuing a good run for a Christmas Top 5 hit. I remain shocked that Band Aid are not top 10 on Christmas week.

Posted by: MrIndependent Dec 19 2014, 12:13 PM

I never would have thought you to hate a John Newman song so much, and your love for Control too huh.gif

Please, where are Steal My Girl and Night Changes ?

Nope, 'Changing' isn't Top 40 whilst 'Blame' is just holding on.

My final request of the year, any sign of Wizzard?

I wouldn't say I hate it, but it's a massive disappointement for me. I really thought that Calvin and John would do something a lot better, and I never expected to yell at a John Newman song to get out of the chart. Now.

I just like to make note this is the last mid update for the year, as Christmas and New Year's Day is mid week, my guess normal services will begin the week of 5 Jan 2015, hopefully we get sales information Sunday night from MW from 8pm onwards.

Might get the odd update from OCC for next week but I wouldn't bank on it.

One more thing I want to say is thanks to everyone taking part in the mid conversation during the year, join me again in 2015 and hopefully Idina Menzel and John Legend are out of the chart pretty soon.

I and the chart team wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Michael Bubre and Liam97 will be supplying the mince pies and punch to lavish on. Enjoy....

I hope All Of Me goes quickly. As of Let It Go, I hope it stays until 25th January 2015, then it can drop as fast as it possibly can.
Also, ironically, my school holiday started today at 4pm, and school restarts on 5th January 2015 laugh.gif

I think this is way better than the lame 'Summer', I want this to hang around and outsell it.

You're probably wondering why you have a badge at the bottom of your username. Ella Henderson is the reason why.

I expect her singles to get a big boost within the next 2 weeks but probably her album wont make the top 10 for the Christmas chart.

Erm, this week is the Christmas chart, I think. So, well technically you're right anyway.

Summer wasn't very good either. The only really good one of the first three single from Motion was Under Control.
Strangely, my favourite single from X is Don't, the only one who wasn't number one.

Here's to fewer undeserved 1 week #1s in 2015...

No! We want more #1s next year. Let's hope it beats 2000's record of 42 #1s

Definitely! #1 week number ones are fine as long as they're big hits like 'Nobody to Love', 'Hideaway' and 'Stay With Me' are and there's enough multi-week #1s to balance it out. Seems odd that only 'Rather Be' and 'All About That Bass' were long runners at #1. Hopefully streaming will help that.

I agree, another thing I hate, acts returning to #1 a few weeks later, but that is bound to happen now and than with the current streaming, and without been repetitive, acts should bring their material out early instead of holding back, and in the case of Mark Ronson he should have released this Monday coming, without the broken run at #1. sad.gif if he gets there next week.
