1960s Top 40 Rate Number 1s While there were several different UK singles charts during the 1960s (with the NME weekly chart being the most widely followed), the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles and, subsequently, the Official Charts Company use the Record Retailer chart as their reference during this period, so that's the one we'll be using here. (The most famous "injustice" being The Beatles' Please, Please Me being knocked down as a No.2, when it was a number one in all the other charts at the time). The 'Official' Singles Charts, as we know it, didn't begin until February 1969. These series of rates will cover March 1960 (when the chart expanded to a Top 40 for the first time) to December 1969. Below is a chronological list of all the singles which peaked at No.1 in the UK during the 1960s. Rate your faves, and the winner will go through to the final Ultimate Top 40 (where it will join the best No.1, No.2 etc). Ridiculously tough! And I'm not even much of a 60s fan! Adore each and every one of my Top 25, and very fond of the others. Biggest surprise, possibly, is that only two Beatles tracks and one Rolling Stones track (and they're all quite low) makes it in
+50 The Honeycombs - Have I The Right? +49 Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - Fire +48 The Moody Blues - Go Now +47 Cilla Black - Anyone Who Had A Heart +46 B. Bumble & The Stingers - Nut Rocker +45 The Walker Brothers - Make It Easy On Yourself +44 John Leyton - Johnny Remember Me +43 Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me +42 Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World / Cabaret +41 The Equals - Baby, Come Back +40 Scott McKenzie - San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) +39 Gerry & The Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone +38 Del Shannon - Runaway +37 The Supremes - Baby Love +36 The Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore +35 Zager and Evans - In The Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus) +34 Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising +33 Desmond Dekker & The Aces - Israelites +32 The Archies - Sugar, Sugar +31 Unit 4 + 2 - Concrete And Clay +30 Johnny Tillotson - Poetry In Motion +29 Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walkin' +28 Gary Puckett & The Union Gap - Young Girl +27 Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je t'aime... Number Ones - The Results!
As ever with the #1 rates, quite a few surprises here! Including several in the nil pointers list. We've had some shockers in the past (Take That's Never Forget scoring 0 in the 90s No.1s rate probably the biggest surprise) but take a look at those which got nothing here: Adam Faith - Poor Me Johnny Preston - Running Bear Anthony Newley - Do You Mind? The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown Eddie Cochran - Three Steps To Heaven Jimmy Jones - Good Timin' Cliff Richard & The Shadows - Please Don't Tease Ricky Valance - Tell Laura I Love Her Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely (Know How I Feel) Elvis Presley - It's Now Or Never Cliff Richard & The Shadows - I Love You Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight? Petula Clark - Sailor The Everly Brothers - Walk Right Back / Ebony Eyes Elvis Presley - Wooden Heart Floyd Cramer - On the Rebound The Temperance Seven - You're Driving Me Crazy Elvis Presley - Surrender The Everly Brothers - Temptation Eden Kane - Well I Ask You The Shadows - Kon-Tiki The Highwaymen - Michael Elvis Presley - Little Sister / (Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame Cliff Richard & The Shadows - The Young Ones Elvis Presley - Rock-A-Hula Baby / Can't Help Falling in Love Elvis Presley - Good Luck Charm Mike Sarne with Wendy Richard - Come Outside Frank Ifield - I Remember You Elvis Presley - She's Not You Frank Ifield - Lovesick Blues Elvis Presley - Return To Sender Cliff Richard & The Shadows - The Next Time / Bachelor Boy The Shadows - Dance On! Kramer & The Dakotas - Little Children The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love The Searchers - Don't Throw Your Love Away The Four Pennies - Juliet The Rolling Stones - It's All Over Now The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night The Rolling Stones - Little Red Rooster Georgie Fame - Yeh Yeh The Rolling Stones - The Last Time Cliff Richard - The Minute You're Gone Roger Miller - King Of The Road Elvis Presley - Crying In The Chapel Ken Dodd - Tears The Spencer Davis Group - Keep On Running The Spencer Davis Group - Somebody Help Me Manfred Mann - Pretty Flamingo Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames - Getaway Jim Reeves - Distant Drums Petula Clark - This Is My Song Engelbert Humperdinck - Release Me The Tremeloes - Silence Is Golden Engelbert Humperdinck - The Last Waltz Long John Baldry - Let The Heartaches Begin Georgie Fame - The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde Esther & Abi Ofarim - Cinderella Rockefella The Beatles - Lady Madonna Des O'Connor - I Pretend Marmalade - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da The Beatles with Billy Preston - Get Back Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys Five of The Beatles' 17 chart toppers fail to score anything (including some, I would argue, of their most famous No.1s. Plus, their highest placed entry here may surprise you). Two of Rolling Stones' eight No.1s fail to score a single point. Only one solitary Cliff No.1 scrapes in. But perhaps, the biggest surprise is that ALL of Elvis' 60s No.1s got nothing at all! The Everly Brothers got no points either. And neither did...erm...Engelbert, Ken, Des and Rolf. These lot did pick up some votes though (and it's just a three-point difference between the top two): 2. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine 159 3. Cilla Black - Anyone Who Had a Heart 137 4. The Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore 133 5. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations 130 6.
