Who do you think will go through in Group E?

Posted by: Houdini Jun 6 2021, 11:41 AM

I expect Spain and Sweden to get the top 2 places here and Slovakia to finish bottom.

Posted by: Dobbo. Jun 7 2021, 08:48 AM

Tough group to call if we assume Spain are top, all of those teams can be dangerous on their day.

Predictions

Spain
Poland
Sweden
Slovakia

Posted by: DJHazey Jun 8 2021, 01:22 PM

Spain/Poland/Sweden will be a very interesting battle. Slovakia is a classic "congratulation for coming and providing 9 points to the others", however if Mak, Hamsik, Duda and crew come through against any of them, who knows? But just recently they had their share of troubles in Nations League and barely got here, so it doesn't look promising for them. Sweden had the heart-breaking news that Ibrahimovic won't be able to go, but it might be a blessing in-disguise as Sweden has learned to play together more since his retirement from the national team and one could argue they are scarier that way. However, Spain has so much young talent it's not even fair and the Lewandowski factor push the Swedes to third. Surely they become one of the 3rd-place teams to make the Round of 16 though.

Spain
Poland
Sweden
Slovakia

Spain/Poland/Sweden I think.

Posted by: steve201 Jun 8 2021, 11:36 PM

Is Ibra injured?

Is Ibra injured?

Yes, he is injured.

Posted by: steve201 Jun 9 2021, 11:18 AM

Sad times!

Posted by: Dobbo. Jun 9 2021, 12:31 PM

All the fanfare of his grand return too.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Jun 9 2021, 07:18 PM

Poland the worst schedule of the tournament, could go against them and probably value in them finishing bottom although 'easiest' game is first.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 04:05 PM

POLAND: Szczesny, Bereszynski, Glik, Bednarek, Rybus, Linetty, Krychowiak, Klich, Jozwiak, Lewandowski, Zielinski.

Subs: Dawidowicz, Kedziora, Kozlowski, Swiderski, Skorupski, Moder, Placheta, Frankowski, Fabianski, Swierczok, Helik, Puchacz.

SLOVAKIA: Dubravka, Pekarik, Satka, Skriniar, Hubocan, Kucka, Hromada, Haraslin, Hamsik, Mak, Duda.

Subs: Vavro, Gregus, Weiss, Suslov, Benes, Kuciak, Hrosovsky, Hancko, Duris, Lobotka, Rodak, Koscelnik.

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 14 2021, 04:35 PM

This seems the group with the best chance of finishing with one team (Spain) getting nine points with the others each on three.

Posted by: Dobbo. Jun 14 2021, 04:46 PM

An extremely rare occurrence that if so^

I'd love to see another group where all teams end on 4 points with a win, a draw & a loss each. It's only ever happened once in World Cup/Euros history but can't remember when it was.

Posted by: DJHazey Jun 14 2021, 05:08 PM

Well that was a quick equalizer in the second half. Linetty makes 1-1 at the 46th minute.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 05:20 PM

First sending off of the Euros.

Posted by: DJHazey Jun 14 2021, 05:21 PM

Yup Poland down to ten men.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 14 2021, 05:22 PM

I was going to say, is that the first red of the tournament? Just as Poland looked like they were getting on top as well. (can't complain though as I'm supporting Slovakia for this one tongue.gif)

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 05:23 PM

Krychowiak becomes the first player to be sent off in this year's Euros.

Posted by: DJHazey Jun 14 2021, 05:30 PM

Welp, that was fast. 2-1 to Slovakia. Škriniar scores it.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 05:39 PM

"You wouldn't even know Lewandowski is playing."

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 14 2021, 05:54 PM

Get in Slovakia! Hope this turns out to be a good contest for them, certainly gotten off to a good start.

Posted by: Houdini Jun 14 2021, 05:57 PM

It's going to be hard for Poland to progress now as you would imagine Spain will beat them as well. Lewandowski went missing for the whole match, just goes to show that without a good team around you the best players in the world won't have much of an effect.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 07:18 PM

SPAIN: Simon, Marcos Llorente, Laporte, Pau Torres, Jordi Alba, Koke, Rodri, Gonzalez, Ferran Torres, Morata, Olmo.

Subs: de Gea, Azpilicueta, Diego Llorente, Gerard, Thiago, Garcia, Sanchez, Gaya, Fabian, Traore, Oyarzabal, Sarabia.

SWEDEN: Olsen, Lustig, Danielson, Lindelof, Augustinsson, Sebastian Larsson, Ekdal, Olsson, Forsberg, Berg, Isak.

Subs: Bengtsson, Johnsson, Svensson, Helander, Sema, Krafth, Claesson, Jansson, Quaison, Nordfeldt, Jordan Larsson, Cajuste.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 07:26 PM

Couple of chances from Koke but to no prevail.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 07:28 PM

It has been all Spain so far but no goals.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 07:34 PM

This could be a very long evening for Sweden. They don't seem to have created anything.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 07:39 PM

Been all Spain but have been wasteful .

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 07:40 PM

Another opportunity gone away chance for Morata.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 14 2021, 07:40 PM

Biggest chance of the match there from Morata! Thought that was going in.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 14 2021, 07:44 PM

And then almost immediately a big chance for Sweden! Would have loved for them to cause an upset just before half time.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 08:22 PM

That was some miss there.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 14 2021, 08:32 PM

Why do I get the horrible feeling this will end as a 0-0 draw...

Why do I get the horrible feeling this will end as a 0-0 draw...

Because that’s pretty much been Sweden’s game plan! (They’ve defended very well though and looked dangerous on the break)

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 08:42 PM

This is the worst match of the tournament so far.

Posted by: Houdini Jun 14 2021, 08:52 PM

Spain are a shadow of their former selves, don't think they will go far in this tournament.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 14 2021, 08:52 PM

Oh Moreno!!

Six minutes of added time.

"very good Spain side"

As quoted by Danny Murphy at the end.

Posted by: coi Jun 14 2021, 08:58 PM

And Sweden have succeeded, they’ll be happy with a point there, Spain won’t though.

Posted by: LiamSime Jun 14 2021, 09:00 PM

My euro predictions and fantasy team have done horrifically in today’s games 😂

Posted by: steve201 Jun 14 2021, 09:04 PM

Look a good solid side that Swedish team, Isak upfront is a star in the making!

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 14 2021, 09:06 PM

Talk about missed chances, there were loads of them, at times the game was a bit frustrating to watch.

Out of this group seeing Slovakia at top of the table for now, I really didn't see that coming, I was expecting Spain to take it.

Posted by: coi Jun 14 2021, 09:07 PM

Yes, great for Slovakia (my sweepstake team laugh.gif) to be top of the group after the first round of games!

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 14 2021, 09:14 PM

A little bit of trivia Czechoslovakia as one nation won this competition in 1976 beating West Germany 6-3 in a penalty shoot out after a 2-2 draw, Could they face each other in the final unsure.gif thinking.gif

Posted by: DJHazey Jun 14 2021, 09:15 PM

Sweden could've won, Berg had a bunny at the backpost and flubbed it!

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jun 14 2021, 09:24 PM

Well, my family sweepstake choice of Spain isn't looking too hopeful after that performance mellow.gif Guess I'll put my hopes in Belgium x

Posted by: Dobbo. Jun 15 2021, 09:33 AM

Lol it's only one game. Spain absolutely dominated the match by all accounts. They just don't have a decent striker anymore. They built their success from 2008-2012 all on dominating possession and only winning games 1-0 or 2-0 but Torres & Villa were leagues ahead of Morata. Still think they'll go far into the tourno.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 15 2021, 11:09 PM

Sweden striker Marcus Berg received online abuse after missing an open goal against Spain in Group E at Euro 2020.

Berg missed from close range at the far post after impressive build-up by strike partner Alexander Isak.

Abusive comments were made after the match under images the 34-year-old has posted on his Instagram account.

The Swedish Football Association, who will submit a formal report to police, says the comments are "over the boundaries that we can accept".

Posted by: Mack. Jun 19 2021, 09:46 AM

Spain will have to improve tonight and take their chances.

Posted by: sn👠ke Jun 19 2021, 06:37 PM

Depends how strong Poland are in defence, I could certainly see them doing a Sweden and getting a 0-0 draw from this match.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 19 2021, 07:31 PM

Spain 1-0 up! With a goal initially rules offside but then given after being reviewed by VAR. Think that's the first time I've seen it happen this way round this contest!

Posted by: sn👠ke Jun 19 2021, 07:33 PM

And Spain are 1-0 ahead, Poland definitely have an uphill battle now with Spain dominating possession.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 19 2021, 07:44 PM

Super chance for Poland there! Really unlucky to not get that in the back of the net.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 19 2021, 08:14 PM

Lewandowski off the mark

1-1

Posted by: Mack. Jun 19 2021, 08:16 PM

And now Spain have a penalty.

And Moreno misses it.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 19 2021, 08:18 PM

Poland are getting a lot of yellows here! They certainly need to keep their heads now.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 19 2021, 08:46 PM

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 19 2021, 08:55 PM

Fantastic result for Poland getting the draw, keeping themselves in the competition!

This leaves Spain in a bit of a sticky situation now, they really need to do well against Slovakia to be ensured of a place in the next round (although Portugal were in a similar situation last time round and they turned out alright...)

Posted by: Rooney Jun 19 2021, 08:56 PM

Spain are a bit like a shit England right now.

Posted by: sn👠ke Jun 19 2021, 09:02 PM

Great result for Poland, they played very well and have a good chance of winning against Sweden in their last match.

Slovakia will probably think they have a good chance of getting at least 1 point from their match against Spain now.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 19 2021, 10:10 PM

Good result for Poland, certainly wide open for the final game.

Posted by: Houdini Jun 23 2021, 03:20 PM

I wont be surprised if Spain get knocked out today.

Posted by: steve201 Jun 23 2021, 04:07 PM

Yeh seem like they are a disillusioned team, playing in Seville here though!

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 23 2021, 04:11 PM

Spain have now missed their last five penalties laugh.gif

Posted by: Rooney Jun 23 2021, 04:13 PM

Morata rotf.gif

Someone please sign him and Werner! laugh.gif

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 04:29 PM

Oh dear. A howler for Slovakia.

Posted by: Houdini Jun 23 2021, 04:31 PM

One of the most bizarre goals I've ever seen! ohmy.gif

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 23 2021, 04:31 PM

The third own goal by a goalkeeper and easily the most embarrassing.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 04:40 PM

Worst own goal I've seen was one Chris Brass.

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 23 2021, 04:48 PM

And so this time the 'keeper thinks "If I don't touch the ball, I can't score an own goal". Genius laugh.gif

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 04:50 PM

Laporte doubles Spain's lead.

As it stands Slovakia and Poland will go out.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 05:12 PM

Blimey, that Lewandowski miss...

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 05:17 PM

Fantastic finish from Sarbria to make it 3-0 to Spain.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 05:20 PM

Sweden 2-0 up. Poles on their way home.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 05:22 PM

A reply back from Poland from Lewandowski.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 05:32 PM

And now it is 5-0 to Spain. A long 20 minutes for Slovakia.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 23 2021, 05:33 PM

*sigh* why do the big teams keep winning? Why can't they let the underdogs win for once?

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 23 2021, 05:34 PM

Spain are just walking all over them laugh.gif

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 23 2021, 05:41 PM

QUOTE(PeteFromLeeds @ Jun 23 2021, 06:33 PM) *

Even if Spain had set out to let Slovakia win, I'm not sure they would have been good enough to take up the offer judging by this performance laugh.gif

Posted by: Mack. Jun 23 2021, 05:46 PM

Poland need one goal to get through.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 23 2021, 05:58 PM

Matches end 5-0 to Spain, 3-2 to Sweden. I feel as though the Sweden/Poland match would have been more interesting to watch purely for the sake of it not being so one-sided, glad Sweden topped the group at least.

Posted by: sn👠ke Jun 23 2021, 06:01 PM

Gutted for Poland, they came very close to getting though.

Sweden really went for the win even though they had already qualified, unlike the Czechs' yesterday who really didn't seem to put up that much of a fight against England. Sweden look like they won't be an easy team to win against.

Posted by: steve201 Jun 23 2021, 06:04 PM

Sweden have created a much better side without Ibrahimovic stealing the limelight. Forsberg was the man who was to take over from him 10 years ago has developed into a great footballer.

Some game between Poland and Sweden - that was the game I was meant to go and see - meant to be in Dublin!

Posted by: Houdini Jun 23 2021, 06:05 PM

It looks very likely that the 3rd placed teams in Groups A, C, D & F will qualify which means the last 16 matches will be:

Belgium Vs France/Portugal/Germany (3rd placed Group F team)
Italy Vs Austria
France/Portugal/Germany (Group F winner) Vs Switzerland
Croatia Vs Spain
Sweden Vs Ukraine
England Vs France/Portugal/Germany (Group F Runner-Up)
Netherlands Vs Czech Republic
Wales Vs Denmark

Posted by: Dobbo. Jun 24 2021, 12:51 PM

Impressive result for Spain considering they were playing with 10 men for much of that match laugh.gif (although maybe they had 11 it was just Dubravka not Morata on their side)

Own goals galore in this group stage!
