QUOTE Novak Djokovic has accused critics of subjecting him to a “witch-hunt” after his Adria Tour event ended in a coronavirus fiasco and said he was still uncertain whether he would play at the US Open. Images and videos of the players hugging at the net, playing basketball together and partying at the tournament were posted on social media. Djokovic, his fellow Serb Viktor Troicki, the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric of Croatia all tested positive for the virus and the event had to be called off. Djokovic, who tested positive for Covid-19 after the Adria Tour’s second leg in Croatia, has hit back vehemently at peers and pundits who said he was irresponsible to stage the event amid the pandemic. “I can only see criticism lately and much of it is malicious,” the world No 1 told the Serbian newspaper Sportski Zurnal. “It’s obviously more than just criticism, it’s like an agenda and a witch-hunt are on. Someone has to take the fall, a big name. “I still haven’t decided whether I will play in the US Open [which is scheduled from 31 August to 13 September], the upsurge in registered Covid-19 cases in the United States and New York in particular are not playing into the event’s hands,” added Djokovic, who was back in training on Tuesday with Troicki. Djokovic tested negative after taking a second test last week and, having previously conceded the Adria Tour came too soon, he reiterated he had acted in good faith. “My intention was pure, I was whole-heartedly committed to organising a humanitarian event to help players and tennis federations in the [Balkan] region,” he said. “We complied with all the laws and regulations. But we’ve learned our lessons and some things could have probably been done in a different way.” |

British number one Johanna Konta will play in the opening tournament when the WTA Tour restarts in August.
The 2019 French Open semi-finalist joins last year's Wimbledon champion Simona Halep in the field for the Palermo Ladies' Open. The clay-court event, which starts on 3 August, marks the return of top-level tennis after the professional tours were suspended in March because of the coronavirus pandemic. Five of the world's top 20 are playing. |

Katie Boulter beat fellow Briton Alice Gillan 6-1 6-4 on the opening day of the Progress Tour Women's Championships at Roehampton's National Tennis Centre.
The 23-year-old, who has dropped to 374th in the world after an injury kept her off the tour, will play another two matches in the round-robin stage. |

Britain's Katie Boulter hopes to "keep getting better and better" as she prepares to face best friend Freya Christie in Friday's Progress Tour Women's Championships semi-finals.
Boulter beat compatriot Jodie Burrage 6-3 7-6 (7-5) to qualify top of her group for the knockout stages. The 23-year-old was ranked 82nd in the world last year before falling to 374th after time out with a back injury. British number seven Burrage will play Alicia Barnett in the other semi-final. |

Johanna Konta was beaten in her first match since March as Jodie Burrage caused a shock at the Battle of the Brits on Monday.
Konta, ranked 14th in the world, was understandably far from her best and lacked fluency in a 6-4 6-3 defeat. |

Defending champion Bianca Andreescu has withdrawn from this year's US Open because the coronavirus pandemic has hampered her return from injury.
The Canadian, 20, has not played since sustaining a knee injury at the WTA Finals in October. The US Open will be held behind closed doors in New York from 31 August. "I have made the difficult decision not to return to New York this year," said Andreescu, who beat Serena Williams in last year's final. "I have taken this step in order to focus on my match fitness and ensure that I return ready to play at my highest level." Andreescu added that "unforeseen challenges" including the cancellation of events because of the coronavirus pandemic have "compromised my ability to prepare and compete to the degree necessary to play at my h |

Japan's Kei Nishikori has tested positive for coronavirus for a second time, 10 days before the US Open.
The 2014 US Open runner-up, 30, has been in isolation since last weekend and is missing the Cincinnati Masters. He tested positive for a second time on Friday and will need two negative tests to compete in the Grand Slam. |

Johanna Konta earned her first competitive victory since the WTA Tour restarted with a confident win over Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens at the Western and Southern Open in New York.
Konta, seeded eighth and given a first-round bye, took the final 11 games to win 6-2 6-0 and reach the third round. However, Dan Evans lost to Canada's Milos Raonic in his second-round match. |

Britain's Andy Murray earned his first win against a top-10 player since 2017 by beating Germany's Alexander Zverev at the Western and Southern Open.
The 33-year-old Scot, playing his first top-level tournament since November after injury, won 6-3 3-6 7-5 against the world number seven to reach the third round in New York. "It is a good effort to win that after not playing for a while," said Murray. Murray, ranked 129th in the world, will play Milos Raonic of Canada next. |

What we need to make the tournament any semblance of interesting is Djok to lose in an early round and it'll be the most open Open (hee hee) in over 20 years.

That's quite a comeback from Cameron Norrie to come from two sets down to beat the number 9 seed Diego Schwartzman.

It's great to see, I'm really pleased for him on a personal level. He's still got something at least! I suspect he will get beaten in the next round as I'm not sure his body will be able to cope after a marathon 5 seter in the first round! But from a mental perspective, I think it's absolutely massive. |
