I think in denial would have done better as the kylie fans would have bought it too.

While Kylie was not seen as popular during that era she was still managing to sell 60k per single, combined with the loyal Pet Shop Boys fans the single did stand some chance of success.

I dunno, in a way I kind of like that it's a relatively undiscovered gem as it's a special song to me.
Although on the other hand, it could have been a bold move to release this and push the envelope in a society that had a markedly more homophobic attitude at that time. |

Very good point as it was a very different time in terms of attitude towards it.

Although on the other hand, it could have been a bold move to release this and push the envelope in a society that had a markedly more homophobic attitude at that time. I had not considered this from that point of view and it is an excellent point to highlight, as it is easy to forget the meaning of the song. During this time, they was a stark change in the way people were viewed for "coming out" which is far cry to how it is perceived now. There was alot of progress in the late 90s but looking back, it is incredibly hard to believe that people were so narrow minded in a time that does not feel that long ago. Music, has always been a great way of breaking down barriers, but, with Kylie not at her most popular at this time, the impact of such a song would have become minimal. Had Kylie, released such a song in the 00's the impact would have been so great. |

If it released anywhere from 00-10 it would have done very well.

Gorgeous song, suits them both well. I remember buying the album (quite cheaply it was reduced quite quickly, sorry PSBs) and just love this song and I Don't What You Want....hate New York City Boy. Dreadful, can't listen to it, such a poor attempt at replicating the fabulousness of Go West.
Ah, just listening to In Denial again right now, opening strings give me goosebumps. This post has been edited by aeroco: 25th October 2019, 09:51 AM |

New York City Boy i can take or leave.
Go West is one of the Pet Shop Boys signature hits and this tries but fails to step into that territory. New York City Boy is the Get Outta My Way from Kylie, trying to cash in on a previous song that is far superior. |

'Go West' grates on me and it's been overdone, I'd take 'New York City Boy' over it any day.

But "Drunk" was a top ten hit on charts? Yup - it actually had a higher peak than both their previous singles (#15 and #14). It wasn't a bad single release at all, even if it probably got that high due to being released in the quiet post-Christmas market. I suspect In Denial didn't become a single due to Parlophone wanting to re-launch her with something big rather than some random collaboration. |

I think I remember reading the pet shop boys really wanted in denial as a single and it was on the cards, maybe kylie was in negotiations with parlophone at that time and that's why it wasnt a single.

The rumour i heard was the Pet Shop Boys were not happy that some of their work after that with Kylie, never made its way onto a Kylie album and they were disappointed by this.
