Hey there Pete hi.gif have just had a big catch-up:

I highly approve of '(It Goes Like) Nanana' as your mainstream pick of the year *.* I have admired some of Peggy's work for a couple of years so was ecstatic that a commercial break-through happened for her!

180: Temples - Oval Stones (612pts)
NE (13/5/2023) 38-44-40-39-35-33-38-51-55-63-74-92-99-xx

Haven't paid too much attention to Temples recently, but saw they had an album out when looking at Jade's personal chart so gave this one a listen, and it's a pretty solid indie-pop song!

This was cool to read! I checked out the album off the back of 'Gamma Rays' and 'Cicada' and was not disappointed whatsoever wub.gif

I was really taken aback by how much I enjoyed 'Black Friday', what a gorgeous song. His brand new one 'The End' is lovely too!

'Strong' was a beautiful collab from Fred Again.. and Romy <3 the former seems to be a bit of a chart force now so it's a shame this one didn't quite make the official charts.

'Promise' was such a grower for me in Eurovision! I underrated it a bit based on studio version but was totally sold from the semi performance onwards *.*

Brilliant to see 'Your Side Of Town' doing well here, should be the case for me too happy.gif The Killers taking on a dark 80s synth sound just had to be up my street haha!

Looking forward to seeing what else is to come happy.gif

Glad you're a fan of all these songs! I definitely need to give The End a listen at some point, I keep seeing it pop up on my YouTube recommended but haven't got round to it yet! Thanks for commenting happy.gif

Commentary

This song was very much a slow burner for me as I was aware of it a couple of months before it appeared in my chart, but every time I heard a snippet of it I wanted to go back to it. It's a really beautiful song focussing both on stuggling with faith and giving hope that God is there. There are a few versions of this song there (all featuring original vocallist Ashley Hess) but this one I think works really well with the choir in the background and the song which gradually builds but never goes all-out.

Another piano-led song here and one of the shortest in my Top 100, this song really allows Tom's voice to shine, and AURORA's harmonies and extra bits complement that really well.

A debut appearance in my chart for Swedish singer Matilda Lyn, this has a really nice indie feel to it that reminds me of something else but I'm not quite sure what. The lyrics about her comparing herself to other people grabbed me as well.

Commentary

Another of my BJSC entries makes an appearance here! This was probably my least conventional entry this year, what with it being a 7-minute long musical interpretation of a Bible passage, but it did gain a few fans despite not qualifying! Project of Love is a Dutch guitarist who has taken on the task of recording as much of the Bible in song as he can, releasing a new track every week (quite a feat!) I can't say I've heard them all but this one really grabbed me as it's certainly different to the usual Christian music fare.

Commentary

The third-highest song from We Are Messengers' 'Hills of Tyrone' EP, this is the only song on there which isn't ballad-y so it's quite a breath of fresh air with the upbeat tone and guitars. Its Top 10 run was cut short by Eurovision but I still rate it very highly.

Jain had renewed success in 2023 through 'Makeba' getting a boost from somewhere (presumably TikTok?) and charting, but this song from this year sounded really good from her - whilst the lyrics are pretty wild, I think that sums her up quite well, and the beat is good as well on this one.

The first Dean Lewis track to crack my Top 10 since Be Alright, this sonng actually has a lot of the hallmarks of that one, but with more of a positive spin even though the subject is clearly in a tough time in their life. This song wasn't an instant favourite from the We Are Messengers EP, but it's definitely the one that grew most on me. Whilst I'm by no means old, I think the topic of getting older sticks in everyone's head, and the fact Darren can sing about getting older with someone beside him is beautiful.

Commentary

Silent Forum were a real find for me this year, producing two cracking tunes. This is fairly standard indie fare, but the lead singer's vocals have a real air of authority to them, and the self-deprecating lyrics along with the line 'nobody's gonna hate yourself like you hate yourself' cause this one to stand out from the crowd.

Commentary

The third-highest Josh Gauton song in my chart this year, this is a lot more toned-down than a lot of the other songs on his album but is still both a little experimental and incredibly endearing. As with most of his songs, the lyrics leave you guessing a bit, but there's clearly an air of positivity here despite missing what he once had.

I can't say I was expecting one of Brandon Lake's most popular songs to get this high in my EOY, but this feels like the perfect example of a slow-burner hit. The debut for The Tallest Man on Earth in my chart (reading The Big Issue reliably enforms me he was a member of Montezumas, but sadly I've not heard of them either) - this drum-and-guitar-strum-y track isn't what you might call an earworm but it's a very heartwarming little piece.

Hi Pete, great to see 'Living In A Haze' appear here! It's such an infectious homage to disco. Also a big fan of 'Your Side Of Town' with the 80s influences, would have enjoyed a whole album of that but at least it made it onto a #1 album with their greatest hits. Look forward to seeing what makes the top 50!

Whilst I definitely rated this song after Eurovision, it wasn't initially one of my out-and-out favourites, but as others faded this one really grew on me. A more sombre song from Tom Odell, talking about spending time with a friend/relation which seems ok on the surface but deeper down there's something they're both avoiding talking about. Thi song is very toned-down and yet brings out all the emotions he's intending to bring out of it.

I've never heard of anything outside of 'Makeba' from Jain so I'm just giving 'The Fool' a listen. It's a lot more conventional than 'Makeba' and doesn't feel as instantly memorable. It's still pretty though just not anything like what I was expecting.

That's fair - I think it's still a bit left-of-normal, particularly given the lyrics, but certainly different from 'Makeba' (and quite different from her other songs from that era as well!) Thanks Lewis happy.gif

The second-highest Eurovision track in my countdown, this sounded really good on the night and I've continued to rate it highly. Hard rock pops its head up again! The title pretty much sums up the song - the vocallist sings about his own mental battles and asking to see the light in himself more. I've not paid too much attention to Bombay Bicycle Club's more recent music, but I heard this one and it grew on me very quickly. The song is a heartwarming one of the vocallist talking to his child and singing about all that he'll do in the future.
