Doctor Blind Top 40 of 2023 (Link live from 1400 on Sat 6 Jan)

I'll try and keep a live update of the chart in this thread as the chart is broadcast- and once complete include the 41-100 positions and any below this of new & emerging artists.

As usual it's compiled using my personal charts from the year so: no surprises; lots of songs missing out because their chart runs straddle years; etc. There were 19 different number 1s in 2023 and all bar Brimheim and deary racked up enough points to make the Top 40. Here are some stats.. STAT1 Outside the Top 40- The highest charting non-Top 10 single was BAMBII “One Touch” (#11). STAT2 The lowest peak position of anything in the Top 40 is #4, which equals the record set in 2019 when 39 out of the 40 were Top 3 hits, with just Aldous Harding “The Barrel” peaking outside the Top 3 (#4). STAT3 The most charted artist in 2023 was Art School Girlfriend with 46 weeks, but does she have the #1 for the year?
This year is notable for having 53 chart weeks including 1 January and 31 December!
You can listen back to the 2022 Top 40 show: here // and the thread to find the chart in full is: here

The 2022 Top 10 looked like this:

001: Fontaines D.C. “I Love You”
002: Louis Cole “Let It Happen”
003: Caroline Polachek “Billions”
004: Daniel Avery “Chaos Energy”
005: Beach House “New Romance”
006: Sudan Archives “Home Maker”
007: KH “Looking At Your Pager”
008: Danger Mouse & Black Thought ft. Michael Kiwanuka “Aquamarine”
009: HAAi & Jon Hopkins “Baby, We’re Ascending”
010: Ibibio Sound Machine “Protection From Evil”

Previous 'Songs of the Year' include (weeks at number 1 in brackets):

2021: Leon Vynehall “An Exhale” (5)
2020: Working Men’s Club “Valleys” (4)
2019: Sampa The Great “Final Form” (4)
2018: Young Fathers “In My View” (4)
2017: The Horrors “Something To Remember Me By” (7)

Late, but I'm here music.gif

Night Light and Never Let Me Go *.* - the latter has became one of my DJ HEARTSTRING faves, really goes off in their live sets.

Cool to see Heaven Surrounds Us so high, a standout from their great album

A Place to Lie

Yay for it making the top 20 w00t.gif

G Jones yaaaaaaaaaaaassss, what an EPIC.

I Been Young, one of the best BJSC entries of the last year, so happy it smashed in the contest.

Nice to hear the original mix of Now U Do again! The single edit was what I was playing all the time

That hoodie and James K track was better than expected. Really dreamy and I didn't realize it was that long. Given them both a follow!

Begin Again *.* easily the best thing from this Jessie era. And our live coded empress, BJSC robbed goddess DJ_Dave. I was considering sending her for years. I liked 'Array' slightly more.

Interesting to see 'Close to the Clouds' as the highest from the Soft Landing era! I would rank it about 3rd behind 'A Place to Lie' and 'Heaven...'. 'On & On (Again)' was a massive banger and I also loved that Sampha tune a lot! Think that's my fave of your top 3, but 'Jon' really clicked with me after hearing it now, what a beauty wub.gif

It's been a really fun afternoon listening to this Doctor B! Thank you heart.gif

I don't know your top 4, but I'm intrigued! A lot of other stuff here I'm familiar with and love, On and On Again was a great remix, Daniel Avery has a magic touch. Art School Girlfriend's album was a great listen, I think I still like A Place to Lie the best, but Close to the Clouds is also great and Welcome to My Island was one of the highlights of my favourite album of the year.

The Daughter, Nabihah and yune pinku picks further down are also brilliant that were amongst the best moments of the year, great stuff <3

Hi Doctor B - my favourites from your top 100:

020: Jessica Winter & Jonathan Snipes “All I Need”
024: yunè pinku “Fai Fighter”
028: yunè pinku “Night Light”
030: TVAM “Costasol”
037: Peggy Gou “(It Goes Like) Nanana
057: Everything Everything “Cold Reactor”
065: Snow Strippers “Under Your Spell”
066: Nia Archives “So Tell Me...”
067: Lana Del Rey “A&W”
083: Hatchie “Nosedive”
093: Jellyskin “Bringer Of Brine”

Much hype for 'Costasol' which I discovered from your chart, I enjoy the dreamlike / maritime sounds in the production.
