BuzzJack Music Forum _ Madonna _ Who's That Girl ● 30 Years

Posted by: liamk97 Aug 31 2017, 10:38 PM

It's 30 years since Madonna scored her 6th US number one with 'Who's That Girl?'.

During the shooting of her third major film role, titled Slammer at the time, Madonna enlisted the help of the main co-producers and -writers of True Blue, Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, to help her create some songs for the soundtrack, specifically an uptempo and a downtempo. One of these songs became 'Who's That Girl?' - a title Madonna liked so much she had the title of her film changed to it.

'Who's That Girl?' is a continuation of the hispanic theme that was heavily present in the previous single, 'La Isla Bonita'. It's a deliciously poppy and optimistic track that would slot in easily to the True Blue album. Lyrically it tells about a guy who is so mesmerised by a girl they've just encountered; she's a bit naughty but that's just what's so attractive about her. Madonna's vocal plays on this as she alternates between a breathy tone and her lower register.

First single to follow the True Blue era, it's no surprise 'Who's That Girl?' was a success across the world, reaching #1 in both the UK and US. The song saw it receive a nomination at both the 1988 Grammy Awards and 1988 Golden Globes, too.

I don't actually return to this that much, but whenever I do I enjoy it so much so i'm really not sure why it's not on my radar more. A fantastic uplifting song and a perfect transition after the True Blue era.

I don't really like this, and I never really listen to it out of choice.

Who's That Girl is probably in my top five Madonna singles of all-time. I've always loved the Latin vibes from it and her whole style during this era. wub.gif

This has made me want to do a quick Madonna top five (I feel like I have slightly odd tastes in Madge favourites heehee.gif):

1. True Blue
2. Crazy for You
3. Open Your Heart
4. Who's That Girl
5. Secret
(6. This Used to Be My Playground)

OMG.

I find it so crazy this is 30 years old. My mom was such a stan I knew this song by the age of 3 and it was released 3 years before my birth. It's like when you think that there's active members on this board that we're in the womb when hung Up released.

I'm the same. I always overlook it but it just has that classic Madonna 80s magic. Really uplifting, as you say, and its energy is amplified on the Who's That Girl Tour. Watching it now, her enthusiasm is so infectious; really fun to watch her skipping and rocking around the stage, face beaming. I adore the slowed-down title refrain at the end; such a magical tour moment.

Adore seeing your top Madonna songs; unconventional choices perhaps to appear so high yet every song there has something really special about them. How do the usual suspects like 'Vogue', 'Like a Prayer' and 'Hung Up' rank for you?

Like a Prayer would definitely be in my top 10 along with other classics like Papa Don't Preach and Like a Virgin which I suppose makes my list look a bit more conventional heehee.gif
Oops, this is where it gets a bit more controversial... Vogue would be a bit low down, I do like it but it doesn't really excite me like her other songs and I very rarely go back to it. Hung Up is probably my least favourite Madonna single of them all, I've just always found it irritating laugh.gif Oops ...

'Like a Prayer' and 'Papa Don't Preach' are 10/10 so I think both could appear in my Top 10 too.

The 'Vogue' and 'Hung Up' under-appreciation is gutting though; now those two are certainties for my personal Top 10. sad.gif
