We're going to have our first by-election of the 2017 parliament, as Barry McElduff of Sinn Fein has resigned his West Tyrone seat after the fallout of a video he posted that appeared to mock the victims of the IRA Kingsmill Massacre.
It's more than likely that Sinn Fein will still hold the seat in the by-election, they won 50% of the vote in the General Election so it would be surprising if they lost it. There has been early rumblings of a "unity" candidate being run against Sinn Fein, although unlike previous pacts, instead of a unionist candidate it would be a non-partisan, cross community candidate to represent all victims of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Not very likely to happen though. |

As it’s a strong nationalist seat I doubt they’re be much change but nevertheless it’ll be interesting to see how the confidence and supply deal with the Tories will affect the DUP!

Time for a pro-Battenberg candidate.

Sinn Fein won, unsurprisingly.
Heidi Alexander is resigning as an MP to work for the Mayor of London, so there’ll be a by-election in Lewisham East. An easy win for Labour one suspects - she had a majority of 20,000 |

Lewisham East was held by the Tories in 1983 and 1992 after they had reduced the Labour majority to 1,600 in 1979. The MP was Colin Moynihan who was minster (or miniature) for sport for three years. However, it has now become a solid Labour seat. Incidentally, the SDP candidate in 1983 was Polly Toynbee. It's hard to see anything other than a comfortable Labour win in the by-election unless they pick a hard-line Leave supporter for a constituency that voted 62% to Remain.

The by-election will be on 14 June. This has pissed off some members of the local Labour party as it means the selection process will be severely truncated. Nominations will close on 17 May.

The party decided on an all female shortlist, with all four candidates coming from BAME backgrounds. They are Janet Daby, Brenda Dacres, Sakina Sheikh and Claudia Webbe and the vote will take place this Saturday. |

Should be an easy Labour win.
It's nice to see a large, diverse range of parties taking part in this by-election. Besides the established names, there's the Libertarians, Radical, Young People's Party, Christian People's Party, as well as at least two UKIP off-shoots, the Democrats & Veterans Party, and the far-right Morrissey favourite For Britain, with Anne Marie Waters preparing to lose her first of many deposits. |
