'Looking For Me' is my favourite song in this top 5 by far! 'WAP' probably second but the radio edit is pretty laughable kink.gif

'Mood' is quietly creeping up on me each week after initially fobbing it off.

Biography

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming.

Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.”

Next week's contender?

220 KID and JC Stewart
Too Many Nights

Non-album single
Released: 18th September 2020
Label: Polydor Records

Video

Biography

220 KID is a producer/writer/DJ and artist from the UK. The 220 KID name was born after running 220 miles in bright pink pants for charity, after his beloved Godfather passed away. And after running that 220 miles he knew anything was possible. He was soon scouted as a model and has worked for the likes of Vogue, GQ, Nike, Reebok and many more, whilst continuing to develop and perfect himself as an established writer/producer. Over the past two years 220 KID has been working with Grammy nominated producer Grades, One Bit, Camden Cox, Billen Ted, Danny Shah, Jackson, and the infamous Scott Storch (Pink, Christina Aquilera, Beyonce, Snoop Dogg, Dre, Sean Paul) to name a few. His broad musical ability has allowed him to write and produce with a wide range of artists also, such as Clean Bandit, Alpines, Frenship, Walking On Cars, Sheppard, and Camelphat, He has most recently been working with Daniel Skye, Jess Boykins III, Amanda CY, Gracey, Maverick Sabre, Bryn Christopher and Ivy Adara. Unquestionably 220 KID has a wide range of production skills, from epic string work to dirty house base lines. Alongside his fresh style of lyrical writing, he has the ability to make any pop song that little bit more ‘cool’. He's certainly one to watch. - Spotify

Can't decide if this radio edit is laughable or annoying. Hopefully last week at number 1.

Everything Everything clinging onto the #5 album!!!!! cheer.gif 'Violent Sun' getting that glorious 5 second clip of exposure wub.gif Happy to see Doves getting the #1 album too but we knew that was happening obvz x

Oh I guess there was also a singles chart. Not really much interesting going on this week though. Happy to see Paul Woolford getting a top 5 peak (feels like a good early 10s throwback moment), also quite enjoyed the S1mba song on first listen although it's a pretty blatant Young T & Bugsey ripoff. Was really hoping that Saweetie was going to stall at #41 but we can't always get what we want ~

First chance I've had to read the thread. I notice that this was the week in 2005 when numbers 4 and 5 sold the same amount

1- DON’T CHA- Pussycat Dolls Ft Busta Rhymes (65,122)
2- WE BE BURNIN- Sean Paul (28,367)
3- DARE- Gorillaz (18,000)
4- DOCTOR PRESSURE- Mylo Vs Miami Sound Machine (17,257)
5- BAD DAY- Daniel Powter (17,257)

6- HAVE A NICE DAY- Bon Jovi (16,709)
7- OUTTA COUNTROL- 50 Cent (14,545)
8- PON DE REPLAY- Rihanna (13,700)
9- FIX YOU- Coldplay (12,600)
10- WINGS OF A BUTTERFLY- Him (10,911)

In his weekly Chart Analysis column Alan Jones commented about this

QUOTE
It's very rare for two singles ranked so high in the chart to have identical sales. The tie-breaker used to be that the record making the biggest gain (or smallest fall) in sales week-on-week would be ranked higher, which, were it still in operation, would actually mean Powter being number four instead of Mylo. I have to admit I'm not sure what determines the ranking these days - probably fractional sales, which I'll explain next week if necessary - but it certainly worked against Powter.
Plus on the Compilation Albums chart that week the top 2 also recorded the same sales total

QUOTE
Bizarrely, there's also a sales tie at the very top of the compilations chart this week. After seven weeks at number one, Now! 61 dips to number three on the chart, being overtaken by Dance Party and Massive R&B Volume 2 - two Sony/BMG/UMTV collaborations which, both turn in sales tallies of 20,249, with Dance Party getting the nod as number one.

What would be the tie breaker if both songs were new releases that week?
I assume fractional sales come from streaming numbers

I don't know what the tie-breaker would be in that situation for digital (downloads / streams) only releases. Back in November 2010 The Beatles music became available to download for the first time (via iTunes) and Alan Jones listed the sales of all their tracks inside the top 200 for that week, including

118 Blackbird (sales: 2019)
119 I Am The Walrus (2019)

I can only assume the tie break there was an alphabetical listing as both tracks were new entries and neither track had been available to buy the previous week. It would be impossible to sample download sales in such a way that fractional sales would ever be an issue. Fractional sales were an outcome of the chart compilation method used for physical sales (because not every record store is / was used each week so the upweighting of sales produced sales to so many decimal points) but I wouldn't have thought this would be the case for either download sales or streaming equivalent sales. I would have thought those sales would always be in whole numbers.
