Bad single choices are one of the main reasons given to explain the underperformance of MDNA, so which songs would you have chosen as singles?

I'm Addicted to lead. Love Spent would have been a good choice too mybe. Masterpiece should have gotten a push and then possibly Falling Free

My picks = 'I'm Addicted' as the lead single of course, then something controversial to get people talking with 'Gang Bang' as the 2nd single, then slow things down with 'Masterpiece' as the 3rd single, then as for the 4th single I went for 'Give Me All Your Luvin' it was a toss up between that and 'I Don't Give A..' , dunno why I didn't go for the latter, I just find the former a lot more fun and could have worked better if released later instead of as the lead.

I'd probably opt for no singles, class the whole thing as a 'buzz EP' and very quickly move on.

Masterpiece and love spent are the most credible songs on the album. She released the first one but that still didn't do great. Maybe it should have been lead single but I still don't think it would have done much better. The problem is with MDNA as a whole. Musically, it's not as strong as all of her previous albums and her voice sounds like a little girl on many of the songs.

I think you wrote beautiful stranger instead of beautiful killer.

1. Masterpiece released during W.E promo

2. Gang Bang (Tarintino directed video would have been killer)
3. I'm addicted
4. Love Spent

I'd have released 'Masterpiece' in October/November 2011, shortly after the Venice Film Festival premiere of W.E. and just before it hit cinemas. A video wouldn't be essential, just be sent to radio like it was, and this would put the word about the film around and also create a buzz for the new Madonna album in the New Year.

'I'm Addicted' absolutely should have been the lead single. It captures the essence of Madonna's statement of wanting to move, sweat and dance; it's immediate, it's energetic, it's got the right amount of controversy about it and would sound absolutely killer in the club.

I think 'Gang Bang' is too much of an unconventional song to be a single. Radio just wouldn't touch it - it's too long and an edit would completely spoil the song. However, a video for it would have been phenomenal. I remember seeing a fan made video that used mostly clips from her #secretprojectrevolution video and that's definitely the sort of vein I'd envision for it too. A certain viral hit I'd say, getting people taking and being huge promo for the album.

It's not been one I've paid much attention to before but, since revisiting the album this year, I've found 'I'm a Sinner' to be one of the very best tracks and I feel it would make a solid single choice. It's got the upbeat and cheerful chorus that the likes of 'Give Me All Your Luvin'' was going for but without the naffness; the whole Saints name-checking verse has 'Like a Prayer' connotations without being copycat or reductive; plus it feels pretty contemporary radio-friendly but with a bit of excitement about it. Plus it's another song that gives the opportunity for a great video.

I'd finish the era with 'I Don't Give A'. I know it kind of goes against being a true Madonna fan to support anything that seems trend or youth chasing but I think this feels very Madonna-ish at the same time. It's got strong attitude and fun, quotable lyrics, plus the chorus is pretty poppy and a great hook. If not this, I think I'd go for 'Love Spent'.

In short:
  • Masterpiece [promo]
  • I'm Addicted [single #1]
  • Gang Bang [promo]
  • I'm a Sinner [single #2]
  • I Don't Give A [single #3]
