China In Your Hand has that sort of plucky electronic sound on it that Enya's Orinocco Flow has about a year later.

I've never really like it and never understood why it spent 5 weeks at No.1

It's one of the classic 80s ballads for me!

Will have to catch up with the episode but that is a good tracklist. Not a big fan of power ballads usually but China In Your Hand is one of the few I really like, its a brilliantly constructed song I think, its great how it builds up. Not sure it needs the over the top sounding saxophone for the last third of the song though.

'Criticize' and its production is great, it deservedly has become a classic.

I do like the Communards' version of Never Can Say Goodbye, their final big hit sadly. The production I don't find as cheesy as the Stock Aitken Waterman tracks of the time like 'Love In The First Degree'.

Definitely looking forward to house becoming a bigger thing in the charts, on the last one of 87 we'll be seeing House Arrest by Krush, one of the first proper British-made house hits, good song.

Yes 'House Arrest' really starts the trend properly for house tracks making the charts regularly. I first discovered 'House Arrest' last year and was blown away by how incredible it sounds for 1987.

That Mirage Jack Mix IV seemed to show how popular it was becoming it being a house mix of 4/5 mainly disco hits.

I've just watched last Friday's episode with Barry White and Donna Summer both making rare appearances in the studio. They said it was Donna Summer's first time on the programme and even when Barry White was having hits in the 70s,I don't remember seeing him turning up too often.

I assume during Donnas hayday in the mid 70s she was too busy in America! Looking forward to watching that now though that they're in the studio. Is it right to say we see The Proclaimers have their first appearance?

Yes,it was the Proclaimers debut. Simon Mayo and Steve Wright predicted Letter From America to be the Christmas no.1. They weren't far out,it got to no.3.

Big American acts were quite rare on TOTP in those days, unless they were on tour here or flown-in especially with much hoo hah, they usually had Pans People or videos later on. I remember Donna had a video for I Remember Yesterday and Barry Just The Way You Are - but I dont recall seeing them much before those videos!
