BuzzJack Music Forum _ Dance _ Giant (with Rag'n'Bone Man) • Standalone Release

Posted by: Juan Carlos ⚡️ 1st January 2019, 06:30 PM

I don't know how reliable this German site is, but they are teasing that Calvin Harris' new single is called "Giant" and it features Rag'n'Bone Man. The track is expected to be released on January 11.

From https://www.radio-vhr.de/international/calvin-harris-feat-rag-n-bone-man-giant-ab-11-01-2019.html: (translated from German)

QUOTE
For the single "Giant" (which culminates with the chorus line 'I am the giant!'), Harris got the currently biggest singer in the studio: 1.96 meter-bay Rory Graham, better known as Rag'n'Bone Man. With the trademark up-tempo song, the two now expect to continue the airplay number one series in Germany, which began in 2018 with "One Kiss" and "Promises", also in the new year.

Interested! I've always liked his voice even though his own material can be very MOR - bit like Sam Smith in some ways. Song title does sound a bit clunky though especially as there seems to be no metaphor involved laugh.gif

Posted by: lewistgreen 1st January 2019, 06:40 PM

Intrigued! One Kiss and Promises were legit standout tracks of 2018 so I hope the trend continues with this.

Posted by: Cody Slaykali 1st January 2019, 06:43 PM

I like seeing these off the wall choices for features. It really brings out those artists’ range.

Posted by: WhovilleOdyssey 1st January 2019, 06:43 PM

Yes! Looking forward to this biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 1st January 2019, 07:02 PM

Sam Smith was surprisingly excellent on 'Promises', so who knows what this could bring?

Posted by: Dappy New Year 1st January 2019, 07:33 PM

Great to see a new Calvin song will arrive this early into the year. biggrin.gif

Not fond of Rag'n'Bone Man but Calvin can make anyone sound great so I trust this will be another top quality tune.

Posted by: Petivity 1st January 2019, 08:01 PM

Will certainly interesting, Rag'n'Bone Man has managed two Top 100 hits as features in the last year so maybe this could be his Top 40 return!

Posted by: Jαsє 1st January 2019, 08:15 PM

Hyped!!

Posted by: Bjork 1st January 2019, 08:18 PM

really? cannot see it

Posted by: slowdown73 1st January 2019, 08:25 PM

An unusual collaboration. Will be interested to hear this but apart from I found you, I haven’t liked anything from him since my way. No promises and one kiss were both utterly forgettable!

2 of the biggest #1s of 2018, I’m sorry? laugh.gif

Yes! I wasn’t expecting anything new until March so looking forward to this!

I struggle to see how those are forgettable and 'My Way' isn't.

Posted by: Bjork 2nd January 2019, 06:33 AM

My Way is easily one of his worst ever
for me, Calvin is very hit and miss, not just with the songs, but also with the people he works with
he has worked with people that I really like, Florence, Ellie, Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Dua Lipa
but then with people that are just wrong (John Newman, Example, Neyo, Sam Smith)

hope this is not a forced collaboration imposed by the label

But we've heard Sam on a dance song before, it's just that he's released a bunch of Stay With Me clones in the interim, so it wasn't that surprising that he could come back to the Latch quality. On the other hand, I don't think R&BM has touched a dance track afaik

Posted by: lewistgreen 2nd January 2019, 08:09 AM

Yeah this will be the first proper dance song he’s featured on. We’ve had remixes of his own tracks but I’ve only found the D&B ones to work (Rudimental, Wilkinson) so will be interesting to hear what Cavin has done production wise.

Posted by: WhovilleOdyssey 2nd January 2019, 10:02 AM

He was on the Gorillaz track 'The Apprentice' which is quite dancey:

Posted by: DexTheHalls 2nd January 2019, 10:12 AM

The Apprentice is a banger though I don’t think it’s very fancy tongue.gif Albeit compared to his own material it’s club ready

Rag & Bone man needs to stop.

Why? I happen to like his music. I'm really pleased to see him appear on other people's songs to keep his name out there whilst he's between albums.

Oh wow, very early 2000s! Hoping for a sound reflecting that now biggrin.gif

Posted by: lewistgreen 7th January 2019, 09:29 PM

Preview is on Calvin’s social media, not giving much away but the vocal is good

Posted by: Cody Slaykali 9th January 2019, 05:09 AM

This already sounds like something Buzzjack will either love or despise. I can feel it.

That sample is giving me Blame teas!

Posted by: gavindeejay 9th January 2019, 07:47 PM

Already added to Radio 2’s A List for next week.

Posted by: photografdemon 10th January 2019, 05:32 PM

I've heard it, and oh, it sounds a bit funky in drop parts! that are like copycats of One Kiss.
As for chorus, RnB Man goes a little bit too much repetitive, but I think it's possible to live with it.

Posted by: darrens94 10th January 2019, 06:51 PM

Just listened to this what an absolute tune

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 10th January 2019, 06:57 PM

Does anyone have a link? (PM)

edit: got one

Posted by: danuary 10th January 2019, 10:13 PM

Well, I love it!

That horn drop is amazing too, Calvin really knows how to keep his sound fresh.

Really like this. Another smash from Mr Harris! dance.gif

Posted by: Bjork 11th January 2019, 09:10 AM

sounds weird on 1st listen but maybe it's a grower

Posted by: DexTheHalls 11th January 2019, 09:25 AM

Not sure if this will be a third consecutive #1 for him but it's a hit for sure. Although it depends how much impact Rag'n'Bone Man's name has... but it's definitely not gonna pull a One Kiss tongue.gif

Posted by: Joe. 11th January 2019, 09:26 AM

The production is nice but I feel like Rag N Bin man’s voice just does not go with the song. It’s like nails on a chalkboard.

Have to agree, unfortunately. His voice is pretty unlistenable on this for me.

Posted by: Bjork 11th January 2019, 10:34 AM

agree on the nails on chalkboard too :/ he's very shouting in a pub kinda vocal
sure it's a hit with the song being insta-A-added to R1 and R2 and HH on Spotify

Posted by: Stu1985 11th January 2019, 11:10 AM

Instant for me
Love this!

Well I certainly was expecting a horn drop. Considering the verses already sounded a bit Kungs-ish or a bit Bakermat-ish.

It's good enough I suppose.

Indeed the single artwork does look very early 2000s but the song definitively doesn't sound early 00s sadly, it sounds decidedly late 10s.

Posted by: TS0301 11th January 2019, 07:30 PM

Do think this is weaker than One Kiss and Promises but I still like this! Promises was very so-so for me at first so maybe this can grow even more on me.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 11th January 2019, 07:39 PM

11/10 One Kiss
8/10 Giant
5/10 Promises

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 11th January 2019, 10:58 PM

It didn't do much for me on the first listen, but then I dismissed 'Promises' as being bland on the first listen and was wrong about that so I'll see if it grows.

Posted by: lewistgreen 11th January 2019, 11:03 PM

This is a bit more instant for me than Promises was and I came to really love that. The drops on this took me by surprise! Loving it though.

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 11th January 2019, 11:04 PM

A couple more listens of this and... Nah. It's not for me so I'll pass now. He's still 2 for 3 though with this era.

9/10 - One Kiss
9/10 - Promises
4/10 - Giants

Posted by: gavindeejay 11th January 2019, 11:32 PM

11/10 - One Kiss
9/10 - Promoses
8/10 - Giants

I expect I’ll grow to live Giants more as time goes by!

Posted by: Klumzee 12th January 2019, 10:22 AM

This is growing on me! The horn section is an earworm for sure and I'm growing to like R'n'B Man's vocals on this. The more I listen I can't help but think that his vocal delivery sounds just like a powerful female soul singer like Jennifer Hudson laugh.gif

Posted by: Jαsє 14th January 2019, 10:17 PM

9/10 One Kiss

6/10 Promises
5/10 Giant

Hopefully Giant will grow :/

Posted by: Steve201 15th January 2019, 12:56 AM

Starting to grow - the trumpet section is so random and Imaginative imo!

Posted by: Queen Rosemary 15th January 2019, 07:27 AM

3 in a row I was like "oh it's alright" on first listen then thought "oh this is great" on second listen then thought "tuuuune!" on third listen. Another number 1 beckons?

Posted by: danuary 15th January 2019, 10:39 AM

I'm not so sure that this will be a #1 seeing as Sam Smith is doing better, he may have to settle for a few weeks at #2 behind Sam.

One Kiss started off behind Nice For What, don’t think it means much tbh

Posted by: Steve201 15th January 2019, 02:21 PM

It's def an earworm!

Posted by: gavindeejay 17th January 2019, 09:21 AM

Now up to #1 on iTunes

Posted by: Bré 17th January 2019, 06:56 PM

I like the drop in this but do have to agree the vocals are a little on the 'nails on a chalkboard' side based on a first listen oops! Actually kinda reminds me of Duke Dumont's 'Won't Look Back' lol ~

Posted by: Cody Underwood 17th January 2019, 07:30 PM

I'm actually digging the Uptown Funk/Jesus Walks chants in the middle 8 lol

Posted by: dobbo 23rd January 2019, 11:41 PM

This was actually more instant for me than either One Kiss or Promises (I'd rank it between the 2 of those right now however). I'm no RnB man fan but I do like it when an against the grain artist features on a dance song.

Posted by: Juan Carlos ⚡️ 25th January 2019, 04:10 PM

The music video is out now.

Posted by: gmat12 25th January 2019, 06:08 PM

Can anyone explain why Giant does not feature on the UK Dance Chart when it is quite clearly a dance single?

(Would post link but haven't reached 20 posts)

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 25th January 2019, 06:14 PM

The dance chart is strange, sometimes they miss really dancey tracks, but this week they have a load of James Blake tracks!

Posted by: dobbo 26th January 2019, 12:15 PM

Yeah that Dance Chart is a complete & utter mess and always has been.

They're especially picky when it comes to Clean Bandit songs, I've almost certain they just flip a coin on those.

Yeah its bit too poppy I think. Calvin should join the tech house/deep progressive house style which Camelphat have been successful with I think for his next single.

Posted by: Bjork 23rd February 2019, 07:05 PM

why should Calvin follow trends? I think he's better doing his own thing, I don't see Giant as too poppy at all

Posted by: dobbo 25th February 2019, 10:32 PM

I'm proper loving this one now dance.gif he's back on top form. I'd rank both this & Promises up there with his best singles now.
