23. Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me // 3.39

Taking the wooden spoon is the very last GA single. Widely regarded by the fans as a disastrous misfire from them, the single release was rather a mess with next to no promotion at all and resulted in charting at #97. I gave it a -1 not because it's a BAD song, but because it's so, so un-Girls Aloud in both style and lyrical content. Basically, you can tell Xenomania had no part in this. A bit of a limp fizzle out from a group so spectacular as Girls Aloud is certainly NOT what I'd envisaged as a last ever single from them. (Unless that FIFTEEN reunion is coming this year?...)

Posted by: JosephStyles 10th July 2017, 06:23 PM

No shock there! Honestly I quite like it but it really does pale in comparison to their other singles. Justice for On the Metro.

Posted by: liamk97 10th July 2017, 06:25 PM

'Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me' gets a hard time. It may be un-Girls Aloud but it's certainly not a dreadful song or anything like that. I'd imagine it would be pretty respected had it been part of Nicola Roberts' solo album; it fits the theme of her album perfectly and she absolutely shines vocally on this. That said, I'd probably find it hard to lift it that far from the bottom of Girls Aloud's singles discography, mostly because of the high standard of music and the fact I hold more memories with the other songs.

Posted by: HausofSZA 10th July 2017, 06:27 PM

Lmao bye at that.

'Call the Shots' has ALWAYS been my favourite GA song so that to win obviously, although I didn't give it my 11 in my rate because 'Untouchable' has shot up in my affections SO MUCH recently. It's rivalling CTS now tbh mellow.gif wub.gif

Posted by: J▲hq 10th July 2017, 08:16 PM

Well this is a mess already. Should be top 10!!!

22. Walk This Way // 4.03

BuzzJack's least favourite cover version single is Walk This Way (originally by Aerosmith / Run-D.M.C.)! This collaboration with the Sugababes was the first Girls Aloud single not to have Xenomania on production duty - instead it was Dallas Austin who took the helm, the man responsible for a few of the Sugababes' 'Taller in More Ways' tracks (including Push the Button). The charity single was released in March 2007 and provided Girls Aloud with their 3rd #1 hit. However its chart life was short-lived, spending a mere 7 weeks inside the Top 100. With sales of just 140,000 as of 2014, it also holds the dubious honour of being one of just 26 #1 singles from the 21st century to not be certified! Before settling on Walk This Way, other options for songs to cover included Blur's 'Girls & Boys' and Candi Staton's 'You Got the Love', the latter being Nicola Roberts' suggestion & favourite choice!

Posted by: JosephStyles 11th July 2017, 12:46 AM

See I actually really enjoy Walk This Way, so many good memories! Amazing video too wub.gif

Posted by: Davidson 11th July 2017, 01:07 AM

I know everyone seems to hate the 'Walk This Way' collab but I just love it. I know deep down it's shit but it is just such good fun.

Posted by: liamk97 11th July 2017, 10:53 AM

I do enjoy 'Walk This Way' but I'd probably put it bottom of their singles discography. I like the intro and the verses but the chorus is a bit of a let down. The song is elevated by the video; they really go to town on the GA vs. Babes theme. Also, can we recognise that the iconic SONIA from Eastenders makes an appearance?! :')

Posted by: Joe. 11th July 2017, 11:00 AM

Walk this Way's videois great. Other than that...keep it

Posted by: SGrey 11th July 2017, 11:06 AM

Love "Walk This Way" - I completely forgot Amelle was in the Sugababes when this was released.

I've said it so much in the past but I'd love Little Mix and Fifth Harmony to do a similar girl group team up track for charity wub.gif

21. I Think We're Alone Now // 5.21

Next out is 'I Think We're Alone Now', the second single from the girls' first Greatest Hits album. The original plan was to have a cover of 'What A Feeling' on 'The Sound Of Girls Aloud' but 3 days before the album was mastered, the girls contacted management and asked to record 'I Think We're Alone Now' instead. As such, the original recording that featured on the album is much different to the poppers o'clock single remix. It managed to chart at #4 in the busy Christmas release week, which isn't too bad going all things considered. The video was shot at Café de Paris in London, where they shot 3 different endings, with fans voting for which ending they liked best, which was then the version used on all the music channels. The above ending was not selected, a bit of a misjudgement on who their core fanbase were kink.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 11th July 2017, 02:42 PM

I Think We're Alone Now gets a hard time I think, it's a lot of fun! Not one of their very best but still great. The single mix is muuuuuuuch better than the album version too!

Posted by: HarryEzra 11th July 2017, 03:11 PM

Walk This Way and I Think We're Alone Now are both good but not essential

Posted by: travis 11th July 2017, 03:11 PM

Didn't vote in this, but I'll probably follow along while I can~ Disappointed to see Walk This Way and I Think We're Alone Now out so soon! Not in the running for best by a mile, but I really enjoy both of those singles and would put them A LITTLE higher than this?

Posted by: JosephStyles 11th July 2017, 04:35 PM

20. See The Day // 5.30

Three covers in a row now, and the second Christmas time release in a row too. See the Day is a cover of a Dee C. Lee song, and was released as the third single from Chemistry in December 2005. It was released just four weeks after previous hit Biology, and was an airplay smash hit, becoming only their third airplay top 10, following Sound of the Underground and I'll Stand By You. It fared less well in the chart though, debuting at #9, their lowest charting song to date. It spent a second week top 10, at #10, but only four weeks top 40 in total.

Posted by: Tyler 11th July 2017, 09:11 PM

I voted in this, right?

Posted by: Tyler 11th July 2017, 09:12 PM

Need to know if I have the right to bitch about results in the future. xx

Posted by: Davidson 11th July 2017, 10:08 PM

See The Day is definitely not a standout in their back catalogue but I do still find it lovely.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 12th July 2017, 03:26 AM

I'd say that's the perfect bottom 4! I like them all though.

19. I'll Stand By You // 6.09

Girls Aloud's debut single 'Sound of the Underground' was a massive #1 hit, but their next 5 releases all missed out on the top spot - four of them frustratingly peaked at #2! The release of 'I'll Stand By You' (a cover of the Pretenders' 1994 hit) finally gave them their long-awaited second #1, where it stayed for 2 weeks. In doing so it kept Destiny's Child's 'Lose My Breath' at #2. 'I'll Stand By You' was released in aid of BBC Children In Need, but was rather curiously snubbed by BBC Radio 1. Nevertheless it reached #9 in the radio airplay charts - Girls Aloud's second airplay Top 10.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 12th July 2017, 03:55 AM

Four cover versions out in a row! ohmy.gif ISBY is my second favourite cover by them, and for me it was always a lovely moment in their tour set-lists. wub.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 12th July 2017, 08:11 PM

I'll Stand By You is a beautiful cover! Also my second favourite of their covers wub.gif

Posted by: Davidson 13th July 2017, 01:08 PM

Yeah, I do always enjoy 'I'll Stand By You' and the TEN tour made me appreciate it even more so.

Still deserves to be around this position though.

Posted by: Joe. 13th July 2017, 01:26 PM

I'll Stand By You is a cute cover, I don't mind it at all. I don't like it enough to not still wish they had not released any covers as singles.

Long Hot Summer or Life Got Cold next please!

Posted by: JosephStyles 13th July 2017, 01:38 PM

18. Whole Lotta History // 6.41

Time for the first INJUSTICE of the rate (and trust me, there's more to come). Whole Lotta History was released as the fourth single from Chemistry, with a slightly remixed version by Ash Howes. It peaked at #6 in the UK, the second highest of all Chemistry singles but unfortunately spent only four weeks top 40 and had only sold 52k by 2009. A definite shame as for me it's their best ballad quite comfortably! Additionally it was only their second original ballad to be released as a single, after Life Got Cold. Only one or two more followed, depending on how you'd classify Call the Shots!

Posted by: Joe. 13th July 2017, 01:47 PM

What...the...f***.

Posted by: Joe. 13th July 2017, 01:48 PM

How on EARTH is Life Got Cold higher than WLH?!

Posted by: AdamAloud 13th July 2017, 01:49 PM

It's a good song which I loved on the tours especially, but no one was here for 2 ballads in a row from an act like Girls Aloud. I think had it been the sole ballad single from 'Chemistry' it might've faired a lot better chart wise.

Basically:

01. Long Hot Summer (I assume that's all that was ready to go at the time but I do think it's a fun underrated bop)
02. Biology (Duh)
-Album-
03. Whole Lotta History
04. Models (Tour single)

Posted by: JosephStyles 13th July 2017, 01:57 PM

Yeah I'd much rather they skipped over See the Day and just released WLH, there's no reason why they couldn't have pushed it as the Christmas single IMO.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 13th July 2017, 04:44 PM

Justice for Whole Lotta History! I've found it to be underappreciated on BuzzJack before now actually. No way is it their worst "Xenomania original" single, at least it isn't for me!

Posted by: Jade 13th July 2017, 05:00 PM

'Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me' rightfully last *.* a shame that 'See The Day' is so low though, that is forever underrated!

I agree with Joe that it's baffling to see 'Life Got Cold' higher than some of these songs that have recently dropped out. It has always been a poor 'Wonderwall' rehash sad.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 13th July 2017, 05:12 PM

How is 'See The Day' not last and ABOVE(!!!!) 'I Think We're Alone Now'? mellow.gif

'Whole Lotta History' is my fave GA ballad. I really love it wub.gif I also actually like 'Beautiful Cause You Love Me'.. ph34r.gif 'I'll Stand By You' is also a nice version!

Posted by: liamk97 13th July 2017, 05:17 PM

Always quite liked 'See the Day' and 'I Think We're Alone Now' even if they don't add anything that the originals don't already deliver. 'I'll Stand By You' is a great Girls Aloud ballad; obviously Chrissie Hynde makes the original so incredibly special but I still feel the emotion when the girls sing it.

Absolutely shocked that 'Whole Lotta History' is out! ohmy.gif I thought this was a fan favourite?! Definitely agree with everyone else who's saying this should have taken the place of 'See the Day' and be single #3 released in the run up to Christmas. A really emotional 4 minutes; all the girls do such a great job - particularly loving Nicola and Sarah's solo bits as they don't always get the chance to shine. I'm actually really shocked it's out already.

Posted by: 360Jupiter 13th July 2017, 05:37 PM

That Walk This Way cover was a dark day for pop.
I genuinely don't think I've ever heard Whole Lotta History before. Not what I was expecting from the title! what a gem

Posted by: AdamAloud 13th July 2017, 05:44 PM

17. Long Hot Summer // 6.61

Next up is the forgotten summer bop! Released between the gap of their first headline tour ending and the third album, 'Long Hot Summer' was originally intended to appear on the soundtrack on a Herbie film released around that time (hence the motor-themed video) but was cancelled last minute. It was also to be the girls' lowest charting single to date at the time, only managing #7. Whilst Brian Higgins, producer at Xenomania is not a fan ["chasing the soundtrack disrupted us creatively. It was making us miserable. Something had to come out and that was Long Hot Summer. It was made in a panic. It was a disaster record. I can't stand it."], I have to disagree because it's a fantastic song, and quintessentially Girls Aloud. It just was perhaps a mistake as a lead single with hindsight.

Posted by: Jade 13th July 2017, 05:47 PM

I will never understand why 'Long Hot Summer' was the lead over 'Biology'.

(It has grown on me over the years but it's still one of their worst singles)

Posted by: JosephStyles 13th July 2017, 05:53 PM

Long Hot Summer has really hit me this year wub.gif

Posted by: liamk97 13th July 2017, 05:53 PM

'Long Hot Summer' is one of their very best for me. Never had a problem with it being the lead to the Chemistry era, even if I can appreciate the argument that 'Biology' would have been a 'stronger' choice. I agree that it's quintessential Girls Aloud - a deliciously fun pop record with the right touch of sass thrown in. Always play it when the sun comes out each summer.

Posted by: inyourroom 13th July 2017, 08:32 PM

No major upset for me so far, ballads and cover versions weren't really their thing, some of them served a purpose at the time, but they're not as memorable as (most of) those still to come.

16. Life Got Cold // 6.85

The melancholic ballad Life Got Cold was chosen as the third single to be released from the girls' debut album Sound of the Underground, following a highly positive response towards the song from their fan base. It entered and peaked at #3 in the UK charts in August 2003, which made Girls Aloud the first act to chart at #1, #2 and #3 with their first three singles respectively! Its first week sales of just under 32,000 copies was just 1,000 copies adrift of the #2 position - a new entry from Lemar - Dance (With U). #1 that week was Blu Cantrell - Breathe (feat. Sean Paul, Sean Paul & Sean Paul). heehee.gif Despite being a fan favourite back then, with the passing of time Life Got Cold seems to have become quite forgotten (it's one of their lowest streamed singles on Spotify) and otherwise it's often dismissed as sounding too similar to Oasis' Wonderwall!

Posted by: Jonjo 14th July 2017, 02:24 PM

Never liked 'Life Got Cold'. Always thought it was bland and it's really not aged well!

Posted by: Joe. 14th July 2017, 02:28 PM

Yeah, always been my least favourite "original" of theirs. Until BCYLM came along anyway. The rest of the songs remaining are great, I'd say.

I like to see Jump go next so that we're left with all their original bangers.

15. Jump // 7.05

The last cover standing just manages to make the top 15, but unfortunately, Jump cannot make it any higher. It was released as a single for Love Actually, replacing the planned release of Some Kind of Miracle from the Sound of the Underground album. Jump ended up being included on the re-issue of said album, and on What Will the Neighbours Say? the following year. It charted at #2, blocked from #1 by Westlife with Mandy (drama.gif), and has been certified silver, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. The music video sees the girls break into 10 Downing Street, intercut with scenes from the film. It's one of their most fun music videos to me and definitely one of their most remembered too!

Posted by: Jade 16th July 2017, 03:18 AM

'Jump' and its accompanying video are both a total riot! The Nadine parts of the song in particular are my ultimate highlight. wub.gif Probably my favourite of their covers, with 'See The Day' running it close.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 16th July 2017, 10:09 AM

I wish Vevo could update the default picture for the Jump video :')

Jump is my favourite GA cover! The production seemed very fresh in 2003, it's still enjoyable now and it was always fun on tour! (A pity one of the tour DVDs has Pointer Sisters vocals dubbed onto it laugh.gif )

Posted by: Andrew. 16th July 2017, 05:29 PM

I still enjoy 'Jump' but I never really go back to it, I was obsessed back in 2003 though wub.gif Even when I preferred Clea to them ph34r.gif

Posted by: Joe. 16th July 2017, 05:52 PM

This is going very well! All the duds out. Love Machine is my least favourite of what remains but I can see that lasting for a bit longer.

As for #14, adding anything worthy to that discography after such a long break was pretty much an impossible task to begin with, which may have led to someone (not necessarily the band members...) trying too hard, and inevitably failing in the end.

'Something New' has grown on me soooo much over time! I was initially a bit apprehensive about it because the verses felt so brash and a tad grating. Buuut I've accepted it for the fun earwom that it is now. Still, this feels about right for it with the standard of the rest of their discography.

13. The Promise // 7.27

The Promise is Girls Aloud's 19th single, and the first to be taken from their final studio album, Out of Control (2008). This 60s-inspired pop song became their 4th #1 single, and is their 2nd best seller behind Sound of the Underground. The Promise was named the Best British Single at the 2009 Brit Awards - Girls Aloud's long-awaited Brit Award win (Sarah: "It's about time!!"). Their memorable performance of The Promise at the Brit Awards was nominated the following year for Best Live Performance at the BRIT Awards! Other notable performances include The X Factor & my personal favourite Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, which I believe is one of their strongest performances - and Sarah slaaayed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHsIHeB1HgE&t=3m21s. *_* (Seriously, why wasn't this included in the studio version?!).

Posted by: JosephStyles 17th July 2017, 03:49 PM

I'd have put The Promise a tiny bit higher myself! They really did seem to go stratospheric with it, shame they decided it was the time for a hiatus not long after drama.gif

Posted by: Jade 18th July 2017, 02:02 AM

Girls Aloud felt so BIG following 'The Promise' *.* I'm so glad that song took their career to new heights, especially them nabbing a BRIT award! I do love the really classy 60s feel to 'The Promise' <3 'Untouchable' however pips it as my favourite from the Out Of Control era. wub.gif

12. Can't Speak French // 7.38

The first Tangled Up single to drop out is the third and final release from the fan favourite album. Can't Speak French was released in 2008 and peaked at #9, giving the girls their eighteenth consecutive top 10. It seems to be a more divisive track than most on the album, with shady hoes like Jáhq hating it, but it's got a whole lotta love too. The music video was inspired by the fashions of 18th Century France, and is certainly one of their most visually striking videos. For the single release, they ironically recorded a French version of the song, entitled Je Ne Parle Pas Français laugh.gif

Posted by: Joe. 18th July 2017, 08:34 AM

I like CSF, but The Promise and SN should be higher. Can we get a reminder of what's left?

Posted by: Jay ☆ 18th July 2017, 08:42 AM

Still in the running:

Sound of the Underground
No Good Advice
The Show
Love Machine
Wake Me Up
Biology
Something Kinda Ooooh
Sexy! No No No...
Call the Shots
The Loving Kind
Untouchable

Pleasantly surprised Wake Me Up is still in, I've felt for ages that it's one of their most overlooked uptempos!

Personally I wouldn't have The Loving Kind this high up, and if based purely on the radio mix then Untouchable would be lower down for me as well! (Strictly speaking all voters should have only taken this version into account imo, I assume a few didn't).

Posted by: Davidson 18th July 2017, 09:56 AM

Yeah, 'Wake Me Up' and 'The Loving Kind' should be the next two out and then we will have the perfect top 9 wub.gif

Posted by: Saenerys 18th July 2017, 10:22 AM

I really would love for TLK to last a few more rounds. I still can't believe they snubbed it on the ten tour sad.gif

Posted by: 360Jupiter 18th July 2017, 01:02 PM

The Loving Kind is by far my top GA song. Although the radio/single edit of it wasn't great, same as with Untouchable.

Since it's divisive, I don't expect it to come close to the top tho so I'm hoping for a Sexy or Something Kinda Ooooh win. Tho I expect Call The Shots to take it.

Posted by: Joe. 18th July 2017, 01:11 PM

Jay you should have put 'Untouchable [Radio Edit]' in the rate if you wanted that!!11

lmao at that thumbnail

'Wake Me Up' just misses out on the top 10! Released as the final single from the 'What Will The Neighbours Say?' album, it was the girls' first single to miss the top 3, charting at #4, which at the time, was considered quite a disaster! I think every GA fan will remember THAT Top Of The Pops performance of this song *.* A firm fan favourite, they've performed it at every one of their live tours.

and if based purely on the radio mix then Untouchable would be lower down for me as well! (Strictly speaking all voters should have only taken this version into account imo, I assume a few didn't).

I did, and that's why I only gave it a 7. The album version is an 11/10 wub.gif

'Can't Speak French' has grown on me loads since it came out! It is still the weakest of the Tangled Up singles but pretty solid.

'Wake Me Up' is one of their very best ahhhh wub.gif how frustrating that it just misses out on the top 10 here! The production was so edgy for a girl-group and the whole package is just exhilarating heart.gif

11. Wake Me Up // 7.56

lmao at that thumbnail

'Wake Me Up' just misses out on the top 10! Released as the final single from the 'What Will The Neighbours Say?' album, it was the girls' first single to miss the top 3, charting at #4, which at the time, was considered quite a disaster! I think every GA fan will remember THAT Top Of The Pops performance of this song *.* A firm fan favourite, they've performed it at every one of their live tours.

I CAN'T at 3 of their most overrated singles going out one after the other and missing the top 10! rotf.gif *.* YES BUZZJACK! SN - TP - CSF ofc.

'The Promise' I appreciate is what made them superstars and household names in the UK at least. But it's always been so run of the mill for me. Then 'Can't Speak French' has always been disgustingly overrated. I can't believe they went for that basic piece of rubbish over 'Girl Overboard' or something a bit more inspiring like 'Black Jacks' or 'Control of the Knife' or 'Close To Love' or... basically anything else on 'Tangled Up'...

'Wake Me Up' has always seemed pretty underrated/under appreciated. But I can accept it just missing out on the top 10. The top 10 is solid for the most part (or I can see why they're top 10 etc..)

If 'Love Machine' and 'Call The Shots' can leave in the bottom 3 top 10 songs, then I'll be happy (Lol. No WAY at that though). 'Love Machine' I find annoying and cringe and 'Call The Shots' whilst nice, is a bit bland beyond the production and doesn't really go anywhere?

Posted by: liamk97 19th July 2017, 04:39 PM

Bit of a catch-up before we get into the Top 10! 'Jump' was one of my favourite songs when I was little - I agree with Jade that Nadine's parts in the song are the best and I remember having a huge crush on her in the video. The whole video in fact is probably one of their best for me; it's just so much fun and more what GA are about than the more moodier early videos (even if 'SOTU' is iconic).

'Something New' is a killer song and I wish it was so much more successful than it was. I have to admit that I'd probably not rank it in my personal Top 10 so I'm not too saddened by it being out already. I find it more surprising that 'The Promise' failed to reach the Top 10 tbh. I agree with everyone else that GA felt unstoppable at the time of its release and it was just a really exciting time to be a GA fan. So annoying that they went on hiatus after that era. I also agree that Sarah's ad-lib that appears in the live performances should have made the studio version.

'Can't Speak French' tends to get a bit under-appreciated following on from the other two Tangled Up singles (and 'Close to Love' and 'Girl Overboard' on the album) which all get so much praise, so it's pleasing to see it this high. I find myself guilty of under-appreciating it at times - it probably wouldn't spring to mind as a highlight if I had to pick out favourites from memory, but I always find it's probably one of their best when I listen to it.

'Wake Me Up' has secured itself as one of my very favourite GA songs - I'd say it trumps all the singles that preceded it tbh. Another highlight from their videography too, from the hair-flicks to the boob-jiggles!

Ew at 'The Show' being Top 10. I used to really love 'No Good Advice' too but I'd probably not place it Top 10 anymore either.

10. Love Machine // 7.73

Into the Top 10 we go, and the first to fall is Love Machine!

It's safe to say that Girls Aloud weren't pleased when Polydor selected Love Machine for single release - Cheryl "hated it" and Nadine feared it would be "career suicide". The girls were so strongly against it that they had a meeting with the label, and suggested that Deadlines & Diets should be released instead. Evidently the label won out, and the release of Love Machine went ahead in September 2004. I can understand why the girls had their reservations - it's packed with barmy and nonsensical lyrics, and was so unlike anything else in the charts at that time - making it a rather out-there choice.

They needn't have worried! Love Machine entered the UK singles chart at #2 and stayed there for a fortnight (behind the massive dance hit Call on Me by Eric Prydz) - so Polydor clearly made the right decision! It went on to be regarded as one of the girl group's signature hits, and as of 2014 its total sales stood at 210,000 - one of eight Girls Aloud singles to be certified. Despite the success, the song was seemingly never to Cheryl's tastes - on more than one occasion she expressed that she wouldn't want to sing Love Machine once she turned 30. As it turned out she got her wish - Girls Aloud split in March 2013 following their final tour, and Cheryl was 29 at the time.

In the years since the demise of Girls Aloud, Love Machine seems to be one of their best remembered singles. On Spotify it is currently their most popular song (but their second most streamed overall, behind Sound of the Underground), and by my reckoning it'll become their most streamed song by November 2017!

Interesting fact: Love Machine's B Side Androgynous Girls had initially been considered to be released as the lead single from 'What Will the Neighbours Say?'!

9. The Show // 8.20

Why are their YouTube screenshots so crap? :')

A big jump in average now and we reach The Show, the third WWTNS? single out in a row and the highest of the four. The Show was released as the lead single from the girls' second album, and gave them their third #2 in five releases. It got stuck behind Usher's Burn, also new that week, and was one of five new entries in that week's top 10 alone! The video is my personal favourite of theirs. It sees the girls open up their own salon, Curls Allowed, and features them all in their own roles - Nicola as Chelsea Tanner, Nadine as Frenchie, Sarah as Supa Styler, Cheryl as Maxi Wax, and Kimberley as The Boss, which I loved when I was 7 years old and stanned Kimberley but the role seems less apt now x

Posted by: Jade 20th July 2017, 09:17 PM

Some of these thumbnails! :')

'Love Machine' will always hold a special place in my heart for being the song that me and my friends were going to sing on 'Stars In Their Eyes: Kids' as Girls Aloud like 10 years ago laugh.gif sadly this never quite happened but when it was going to be a thing I practiced singing this song soooo much, so the words will forever be ingrained. I love the crazy lyrics and the idiosyncratic production. I'm so glad that the GBP warmed to its charm and it wasn't the 'career suicide' that the girls were envisioning.

'The Show' has been one of my biggest GA growers over the years! I have always been a fan of the video though like you Joseph, so much fun!

My preferred top 5 out of those remaining:

01. Sexy! No No No...
02. Biology
03. Something Kinda Ooooh
04. Untouchable
05. Call The Shots

08. The Loving Kind // 8.21

'The Loving Kind' finally drops out in a very respectable 8th place. The original lead single from 'Out Of Control', before the girls pushed for 'The Promise' instead, was co-written by the Pet Shop Boys and was their 20th consecutive top 10 single, although only just, peaking at #10 on the week of the physical CD release. It doesn't seem to be well liked by Girls Aloud, with them snubbing it on their Ten: The Hits tour, as well as Nicola championing it to be named the worst song of the year at the Popjustice £20 Music Prize back in 2009. However, it's beaten off a lot of bigger hits in this countdown, so it's clearly a case of it being a fan favourite.

The Loving Kind is weak for me. I never really thought much of it.

07. Something Kinda Ooooh // 8.21 (More 11s)

Something Kinda Ooooh, which Wikipedia describes as "an uptempo alternative dance song" is my personal favourite GA single but not my favourite video! In 7th place?! Hate y'all. x

After three studio album releases, it was time for Girls Aloud to release the obligatory Greatest Hits compilation. Their previous album Chemistry had seen diminishing returns for the girls, with 3 of its 4 singles failing to make the Top 5 (for a popular act back in the days of physicals, this was seen to be an underachievement) & the album itself peaking at the frustrating position of #11. Did this mean that the end of Girls Aloud was on the horizon? Although this obviously proved not to be the case, it was a bit of a concern at the time!

Something Kinda Ooooh gave the girl group their biggest hit since I'll Stand By You. It notably entered the UK singles chart Top 5 (at #5) on the strength of download sales alone - making them the first British act to achieve this feat! With the release of physicals the following week, the song moved up to #3 which would be its peak. Even greater success was around the corner - The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits entered the UK albums chart at #1, and went on to sell over 1.2 million copies. wub.gif

I still find this to be a really exhilarating listen, and I can't believe it's almost 11 years since its release! cry.gif

P.S. We need an intervention - these YouTube default pics need to be changed!

I'm kind of surprised to see it as low as this though? I always thought it was generally favoured on here? ohmy.gif At least it doesn't seem to have it's vocal haters like 'Something Poo' or 'The Promise' do (unless I've somehow missed them? Something Kinda Ooh is not a massive favourite would probs be outside my top 10 around 13-14 but I really do like it. Can see it's appeal

Posted by: Jay ☆ 23rd July 2017, 10:41 PM

I like The Loving Kind a lot! I don't think it's one of their outstanding moments though, and I don't agree with the "Top 10 best Girls Aloud" status it holds here. The "I'd do anything..." section is by far the best part of it, and the rest of the song meanders along as a pleasant listen.

It did shock me at the time that Nicola openly expressed her hate for it, to the point of championing it to win worst song of the year! laugh.gif I guess there's no accounting for taste though, given her obvious love for Beautiful Cause You Love Me. ;o

06. Untouchable // 8.58

Who'd have expected Girls Aloud to release a sublime pop song over 6 minutes in length? Not me for sure, but in 2008, they did just that. Then they went the whole hog and released it as the third single from Out of Control the following year. Of course, it had to be edited down in length, although instead of using a simple shorter version, they added a vocoder effect to the vocals which divides fans.

Untouchable received just one performance on TV, on Dancing On Ice - their weakest promotional effort. With that in mind I guess it's no surprise it broke their consecutive run of 20 top 10 hits, although it was incredibly cruel for it to only make #11. It's become a huge fan favourite over the years and it's not difficult to see why, with sublime vocals and superb lyrics, including my personal favourite line - "like beautiful robots dancing alone" heart.gif

Posted by: HausofSZA 24th July 2017, 06:35 AM

A truly magical song. I think it's rivalling Call The Shots as my all time favourite and could well overtake it. Everything about it is incredible. I adore the lyrics and how full of hope they are.

A SONG wub.gif

Posted by: White Mustang 24th July 2017, 07:50 AM

Untouchable is an absolute masterpiece. The radio edit's vocal tuning is somewhat jarring but they did okay with a shorter edit. It doesn't take away from the huge chorus. The lyrics are some of Girls Aloud's best ever. A moment.

Posted by: Jonjo 24th July 2017, 09:56 AM

Agreed with Bal and Joe pretty much.

'Untouchable' is the first GA song to come and challenge SKO as my fave GA track! wub.gif

I must be in the minority at feeling indifferent about SKO. It's by no means bad but GA have better.

What's left? No Good Advice, Sound Of The Underground, Sexy No No No, Call The Shots and Biology? If so I'm expecting

01. Biology
02. Call The Shots
03. Sound Of The Underground
04. Sexy No No No

05. No Good Advice // 8.74

Into the top 5 now and they're all flawless pop masterpieces. 'No Good Advice' was the second single from Girls Aloud and the follow-up to the mega debut smash 'Sound Of The Underground'. If people weren't expecting that as the winner's single from a reality TV band, they certainly weren't expecting this as the follow-up, which cemented Girls Aloud as a force to be reckoned with in British 00's pop. It gave them a #2 hit, their first of many to frustratingly miss out on the top spot. The video is notoriously hated by the band, mostly due to the silver space suits they were sporting.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 24th July 2017, 05:28 PM

Untouchable in its single version form is firmly mid-table for me - the structure & vocoder usage isn't great. On the other hand the album version is a glorious & special moment. wub.gif I loathe the music video. Girls Aloud travelling through space in hamster balls, hurtling towards earth? Delete it!

Rather surprised that No Good Advice is this high, but I'm not mad about this outcome! It's a really electrifying bop. No Good Advice (and Sound of the Underground) sounded like nothing else out there in 2003, it was an incredibly fresh sound and so exciting. I was an immediate fan from Popstars The Rivals, but No Good Advice really cemented my love for them, I firmly believed there was something very special about them. Also, No Good Advice was the first mp3 I ever downloaded (illegally)! ;o

Posted by: JosephStyles 24th July 2017, 05:29 PM

I love No Good Advice but it's much too high imo sad.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 24th July 2017, 06:46 PM

'No Good Advice' for me is their absolute BEST song!

Posted by: Jade 24th July 2017, 06:56 PM

'The Loving Kind' seems a bit too high here! I like the Pet Shop Boys influence and the "I'd do anything..." part is lush, but the rest of the song feels quite underwhelming compared to so much in their repertoire. On the other hand, 'Something Kinda Ooooh' feels quite a bit too low cry.gif what an absolutely electrifying song. An instant pick me up <3 the release of that and the accompanying greatest hits was probably the peak of my GA stanning, I can't imagine how many times I played that album!

'Untouchable' was an INSTANT standout the first time I listened to 'Out Of Control', I was over the moon that it was chosen as a single heart.gif The radio edit was definitely inferior with the vocoder but doesn't detract from the song enough to completely ruin it or anything.

'No Good Advice' was THE song that got me into Girls Aloud *.* I definitely remember SOTU on the radio at the time but I wasn't that into music at such a young age haha, it took me until about 2004 to get into them. Anyway, 'No Good Advice' was on a karaoke CD I had at the time and I would always gravitate to it - I think it was the lyrics that I found quite intriguing! It (along with 'Wake Me Up') soon had the ultimate honour of being embedded on the jades-kool-website.piczo.com homepage aaaand I begged my friend to let me borrow her copy of Now 55 so I could have 'No Good Advice' on my iPod at the time. I don't quite stan it as much as I did like 10 years ago (it 'only' got a 9 from me kink.gif) but I do still love it and appreciate its feistiness.

'Sexy! No No No...' still to come omg wub.gif

'No Good Advice' for me is their absolute BEST song!

YES!

I forget how fantastic 'No Good Advice' is until I actually listen to it. Pop perfection.

Posted by: Tyler 25th July 2017, 09:02 PM

Untouchable should be #1. After listening to all their singles I'd rate it above 'Biology'. One of a kind euphoria right there.

Posted by: Lukuzz 25th July 2017, 09:32 PM

Sexy! NNN should win but it'll end up out next

04. Sexy! No No No... // 8.86

WHAT. A. SONG! Xenomania really went to town with 'Sexy! No No No...", offering an unusual structure (intro, chorus, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, middle eight, verse) & incredibly catchy hooks from start to finish. It was certainly a quirky & daring choice to launch their Tangled Up album era. 'Sexy!' received its premiere in July 2007 - yes, it really has been 10 years since this song stormed into our lives. cry.gif In September it became their 13th Top 5 hit, peaking at #5 (remember when we had to wait around 6 weeks for a song to be released? drama.gif ). Sexy! was also used as the opening song of the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEoG6eUcAgQ to dramatic effect, with the girls suspended on wires and wearing billowing black cloaks. Finishing in a very respectable 4th place, it seems most of us are more "HELL YEAH!" than "no no no..." when it comes to 'Sexy!'. cool2.gif I'd also say that this is one of their best music videos. *.*

Posted by: AdamAloud 27th July 2017, 05:17 PM

Christ I remember waking up early for the radio premiere of this after not long finishing my GCSEs! It was love from first listen, the intro still gives me the tingles it did then. And that tour opening perf, truly a *.* moment!

Posted by: Jonjo 27th July 2017, 05:52 PM

YESSSS!!! 'Sexy...' is an all time bop! It's so, SO good. One of the very best girl band singles, for sure! I think I listened to the radio premiere too and remember being blown away by it! It's held up incredibly well and sounds so fresh to this day! wub.gif

Rate null and void.

Why is 'Sexy No No No...' not the winner huh.gif

03. Call The Shots // 9.05

Averages get very high now as we lose the final single from Tangled Up. Call the Shots was the album's second single, and debuted at #9 the week the album came out. It then rose six places to a peak of #3 after the release of the CD single. It spent seven weeks in the top 10, and 15 weeks in the top 40, a pretty big deal back then! The girls made their X Factor debut to promote this song, performing it on one of the results shows, and other performances occurred on the likes of This Morning, The Paul O'Grady Show, and of course, The Girls Aloud Party. Call the Shots is possibly THE most critically acclaimed GA single, cited by some as the best pop song of all time (notably from Popjustice's Peter Robinson when it won the Twenty Quid Music Prize).

Posted by: Saenerys 28th July 2017, 06:29 AM

The Tangled Up singles really were fantastic weren't they?!! Love Call The Shots - the sentiment is quite relatable really. The video remains one of their best and a girl band classic I'd say, how many other videos have those iconic Samsung swivel phones and Sarah's tragic haircut? kink.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 28th July 2017, 09:40 PM

I'm so glad 'Call The Shots' hasn't won this. I agree with what Jonjo said earlier, it's grossly overrated. I find it so incredibly flat.

Posted by: JosephStyles 28th July 2017, 10:21 PM

I don't get why 'Call The Shots' is so maligned on here, it's so sublime.

(kink.gif)

Seriously, I think Call the Shots is a stunning pop track! wub.gif Well deserving of its status as a huge fan favourite.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 28th July 2017, 10:26 PM

Call the Shots is a gem! wub.gif It's one of my favourite songs of all-time and the middle 8 is a true MOMENT. For a slower song, the instrumental is really powerful sounding, I find it quite unique. It's a blissful listen. wub.gif Can't quite believe it's nearly 10 years old!

Posted by: White Mustang 28th July 2017, 10:35 PM

Urgh at Sound being ahead of Call The Shots. I love it but...I find Sound a bit overrated in comparison to their other singles.

Posted by: HarryEzra 28th July 2017, 10:54 PM

Catching up on the top 5 so far

No Good Advice is sublime I adore it one of the best girl group releases for me just never ages although same can't be said about it's video laugh.gif

Sexy No No No is such a great anthem I am glad that was the lead single from Tangled Up as it set that era up so well.

Call The Shots again is amazing the middle 8 is beautiful and one of the best lyrical songs Girls Aloud have made.

Posted by: Jade 29th July 2017, 09:10 PM

'Sexy! No No No...' is incredibleeee wub.gif My 11 as not just their best song but also their best video! I cannot believe it is 10 years old now ohmy.gif I remember crystal clear receiving a Girls Aloud newsletter email saying that a song called 'Sexy! No No No...' from them was being released soon, I thought what an odd title! laugh.gif But I liked the song straight away (me and my best friend used to sing it during primary school break times laugh.gif) and it has only ever got better for me, as 'Biology' was my favourite GA song for YEARS until this eventually pipped it. That intro gives me goosebumps every time and then the rest of the song is just electrifying. I didn't expect it to win (especially not with the Iz -1!!) so that is a fabulous position for it.

'Call The Shots' is of course pop perfection also. The 'Tangled Up' era was just class wasn't it! *.* It was wonderful to witness that having such a healthy chart run at the time for them.

'Biology' to win!! wub.gif

02. Biology // 9.14

It was close but the critically acclaimed 'Biology' has to settle for silver. Released back in 2005, 'Biology' is not your average pop song, with a structure that nobody else but the dream team of Girls Aloud and Xenomania could do. Not that they ever needed to prove the critics wrong 3 years on from their reality TV beginnings, but 'Biology' cemented Girls Aloud as pop perfectionists. Whilst it may have only peaked at #4 on the official singles chart, it was the first Girls Aloud song to top the then up and coming iTunes chart. The lyric 'without wicked games' is a reference to the fact they almost released a cover of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' instead. Luckily they went for 'Biology' instead, becoming one of their signature tunes and an instant classic.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 30th July 2017, 10:23 PM

Biology is nothing short of incredible! wub.gif One of the best pop songs ever, so unique. It still sounds fresh & exciting to listen to almost 12 years on. heart.gif

01. Sound of the Underground // 9.30

BuzzJack's favourite Girls Aloud single is Sound of the Underground - the song which started it all! heart.gif Following the formation of boy band One True Voice & girl group Girls Aloud on the reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals, it was initially seen as a foregone conclusion the boys would go on to super-stardom, while the girls would fall by the wayside. Well, we all know what actually happened! *.* The public certainly agreed with Girls Aloud's "Buy Girls, Bye Boys" slogan; Sound of the Underground went straight in at #1. Not only was it the first debut single to be a Christmas #1 single, but it also made Girls Aloud the first UK girl group to enter at #1 with a debut single. It eventually became platinum certified and remains the girls' best selling single. Hard to believe it was released almost 15 years ago! Imo Sound of the Underground is by far the best "winners single" to come out of a reality show and one of the strongest pop debuts ever... and a very worthy winner here!

Posted by: JosephStyles 30th July 2017, 11:29 PM

Whilst it's not my absolute favourite, SOTU is still a stormer of a pop song and such a huge risk for a talent show winning single! One of the best pop debuts of the 21st century for sure.

Posted by: Jonjo 30th July 2017, 11:30 PM

I've said my piece on CTS already and I still don't get why beyond the production maybe (which is nice enough), it's raved about as much as it is, as it's so flat and doesn't really go anywhere beyond the introduction..

I still think 'Sound of the Underground' and 'Biology' are two of the riskiest pop releases by a manufactured pop group, ever! So expertly crafted. wub.gif I would LOVE for more singles as daring as those in the charts these days. Especially boybands. I hate how plain their songs are and they get easy hits with them a lot of the time. Whereas for girl groups, it's harder for them to get that sort of hit, so I feel like they more often than not try harder with their songs and sometimes it really pays off!

Thanks for this countdown! It was great revisiting so many classics doing this. wub.gif

EDIT: Also, can someone edit Jay's "Bye Girls, Bye Boys" part of the commentary to "Buy Girls, Bye Boys" please kink.gif

I really thought 'Biology' or 'Call The Shots' would win this before results started so colour me slightly surprised! I would have preferred one of those to win (as I gave them 10, while SOTU received a 9) but 'Sound of the Underground' is still a great winner nevertheless. It was a solid foundation for the girls! A winner's single that was exciting, innovative and so edgy for a girlgroup. I adore the bridge, chorus and the surf guitar in the production heart.gif

'Biology' is incredible. As I mentioned when 'Sexy! No No No...' dropped out, it was my favourite Girls Aloud song for years before it finally got overtaken. It felt like such a breath of fresh air at the time with its pretty unorthodox structure! It feels like 3 songs in one, but all the different components are strong and come together just right so it totally works. I like the video as well.

Thanks mods for doing this, I had fun following along and reading the fab commentaries wub.gif going to revisit all the singles now x
