BuzzJack Music Forum _ International Charts _ MTV Euro Top Chart - (broadcast on MTV Europe) - 2017

Posted by: bobiloko Jan 7 2017, 08:44 PM

The old MTV European Top 20 chart, which had been broadcast on MTV Europe for more than 20 years, ended in 2012. However, it looks like since January 4, 2014 some European "chart" has started being broadcast again on MTV Europe. The chart is broadcast on Saturdays from 12:00 to 14:00 CET and from 19:00 to 21:00 CET and on Sundays from 12:00 to 14:00 CET.
The chart seems to be a Top 40 (on a couple of occasions in 2016 MTV Europe also showed positions between number 50 and number 41, indicating a Top 50). However, not all the positions are shown - some of them are skipped each week.
The songs that are skipped on this "Euro Top Chart" seem to be one of two cases: either songs that aren't played on MTV Europe in general (especially if they don't have an official video yet); or when an artist has more than one song in the chart, not all are shown.
It's also notable that the upper part of this chart is basically the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart that is broadcast on MTV Italy.

4 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human Stay =>

2 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - Starboy 4 Up
1 Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye Stay =>

I'd like to point out the chart run of "Starboy" by The Weeknd and Daft Punk so far:

1-1-3-4-3-6-2-8-7-5-2-5-6-2

It has happened several times - "Starboy" starts falling, then jumps back to number 2! It seems like the runner-up position is a magnet for the song!

"Rockabye" now scores a TENTH week at the top! The last song to reign for a longer time seems to be "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, which supposedly spent 11 weeks at number 1 (I only started watching this new version of MTV Europe's European chart during the second week "Happy" was at the top).
The last song to spend 10 weeks at number 1 in the "old" period of the chart (until 2012) was "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye. And to find the last song to spend 11 weeks at the top we have to go back to 2003, when "Lose Yourself" by Eminem accomplished this...

"Rockabye" has now spent 11 weeks at number 1, equalling the achievement of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams (supposedly), "Lose Yourself" by Eminem, "Asereje" by Las Ketchup, "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Kylie Minogue and "Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins.
So who's ahead? If we don't consider the period between August 2012 and the end of 2013 (when no European chart was broadcast on MTV Europe) and the times before September 1989 (for which we have no archive), only 2 songs have been at the top for 12 weeks - "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio and "Whenever, Wherever" by Shakira...

1 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill

It's no surprise that Ed Sheeran is the new number 1. What's shocking is the song which he conquers the chart with - "Castle On The Hill" and not "Shape Of You"! I think the explanation is that the official video of "Castle On The Hill" was released earlier than the official video of "Shape Of You"...
"Castle On The Hill" becomes Ed Sheeran's third chart-topper after "Sing" and "Thinking Out Loud". We're waiting for his fourth!
In other news, Little Mix appear in the chart simultaneously with 2 different songs - "Touch" and "Shout Out To My Ex". This is actually very unusual - in almost all cases when an artist has 2 (or more) songs in the chart, MTV Europe play just one of them... Unless one (or both) are collaborations - as Sean Paul demonstrates at number 3 and number 4...

1 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You

This week's chart-topper was completely expected. Still, what Ed Sheeran has done is unique! There has been no other time in this chart when an artist reaches number 1 with a song ("Castle On The Hill") one week and reaches number 1 with ANOTHER song ("Shape Of You") the FOLLOWING week! I have no idea when such a thing might happen again...
Another notable thing - last year there were 2 instances when MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40. Now the same occurs - so, in theory, the chart may be a Top 50 but this shows very rarely...

With "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" Zayn scores his second number 2 in this chart after last year's "Pillowtalk" (which, by the way, was the runner-up exactly at this time of February, too!).
Unfortunately, this edition of the chart is an example of something I'm opposing. I don't think songs should appear in a EUROPEAN chart if they're only having success in the UK singles chart (and some of them are not doing well even there!)...

And Sia's new single is not the first one titled "Move Your Body" to appear in MTV Europe's European chart - Eiffel 65's "Move Your Body" reached number 3 in 2000.

Although seldom, some songs that have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest have appeared in MTV Europe's European chart. However, they have always debuted AFTER the contest...
Now Italy's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 - Francesco Gabbani - appears with "Occidentali's Karma" more than a month BEFORE the contest!
It's always fantastic to see MTV Europe play songs in languages other than English!... And if I'm not seriously wrong, this is the first song in Italian in the chart since Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP's 2010 number 1 "We No Speak Americano" (which is technically in Neapolitan)...
Also, this is the first time MTV Europe plays both of Ed Sheeran's singles during the same edition of the chart. In fact, "Castle On The Hill" appears only for the second time after it topped the chart for a single week in the edition of February 4. Once "Shape Of You" replaced it at number 1, MTV Europe stopped playing "Castle On The Hill" (it's usual for them to play just one song by an artist during a particular edition of the chart)...
However, it seems like Ed Sheeran's complete chart dominance has made MTV Europe decide to reflect his success and play both "Castle On The Hill" and "Shape Of You" - at least this time!

They also seem to be more willing to play 2 songs by one artist during one and the same edition of the chart - they already did it last time with Ed Sheeran and now they also played both "Rockabye" and "Symphony" by Clean Bandit...
Speaking of Ed Sheeran, very strangely, "Shape Of You" is replaced at the top by "Chained To The Rhythm". It becomes Katy Perry's fifth chart-topper in MTV Europe's European chart after "I Kissed A Girl", "Hot 'N' Cold", "California Gurls" and "E.T.". "Roar" certainly would have been number 1 as well if there had been a European chart broadcast on MTV Europe in 2013...

It looks like DJ's called Martin are in fashion right now! There are three Martins in the chart simultaneously - Martin Garrix, Martin Solveig and Martin Jensen!
And "Symphony" becomes Clean Bandit's third chart-topper after "Rather Be" and "Rockabye" as well as Zara Larsson's second number 1; her first was also a collaboration - "This One's For You" with David Guetta.

This is the eighth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.
And I really disapprove of songs appearing in this chart when they are nowhere to be seen in ANY European chart - like "FIYAH" by Will.I.Am...

This is a historical edition of the chart! "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee becomes the first song in Spanish to become number 1 since "La Tortura" by Shakira and Alejandro Sanz back in 2005 - 12 years ago!
It's also Daddy Yankee's first appearance in MTV Europe's European chart - "Gasolina" never charted in spite of having success across Europe in 2005.

5 Jason Derulo - Swalla 6 Up
4 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You Stay =>

2 Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson - Symphony 4 Up
1 Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee - Despacito Stay =>

For the second time Zedd appears in the chart in a collaboration (this time - with Alessia Cara) where the song title includes the word "stay"! In 2014 he reached number 11 with "Stay The Night" - a collaboration with Hayley Williams!
And it's always great to see in MTV Europe's European chart a song that is having success across Europe in spite of not appearing in the UK singles chart - like "Tuesday" by Burak Yeter! Also, unless I'm mistaken, Burak Yeter is the first Turkish act in the chart since Tarkan peaked at number 13 with "Şımarık" in 1999!

This is the ninth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.
And we have a very peculiar situation regarding the number 1 position in this edition of the chart! Usually, the upper part of the "Euro Top Chart" broadcast on MTV Europe is the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart that is broadcast on MTV Italy. However, in the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's chart "Despacito" is at number 2 and "I'm The One" by DJ Khaled is at number 1. Here, "Despacito" is at number 1... while "I'm The One" is presumably at number 2 but MTV Europe didn't play it!
When it comes to differences, they can't get bigger than the chart-topper! Quite an occasion indeed!

1 Harry Styles - Sign Of The Times 5 Up

Last year, the only Eurovision song that appeared in this chart was "If I Were Sorry" by Frans - which had only reached number 5 in the contest! This year, the big favourite seemed to be Italy's representative - Francesco Gabbani, whose "Occidentaly's Karma" entered MTV Europe's European chart more than a MONTH before the contest!
Well, now the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 is over and "Occidentali's Karma" reappears... although it only reached number 6 in the contest!!!
In this edition of the chart - one week after the song topped MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" - MTV Europe finally played "I'm The One" by DJ Khaled! However, it's not the new number 1 here...
...That honour goes to "Sign Of The Times". Harry Styles becomes the first member of One Direction to reach the top of the chart. Before that Zayn came very close twice - both "Pillowtalk" and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" peaked at number 2.

By the way, DJ Khaled has previously appeared in MTV Europe's European chart with a very similarly titled song - "I'm On One" reached number 6 in 2011!

And speaking of Niall Horan... "Slow Hands" jumps 13 Places and becomes one of the most shocking number ones in the history of this chart!!!

MTV Europe played a total of 26 songs from the chart. I think this is the first time they have played that many songs from a single edition of the chart... However, they didn't play them all at once... at least not on Saturday!
What happened on Saturday? The last song MTV Europe played was "Wild Thoughts" by DJ Khaled and Rihanna at number 2... and then the broadcast ended! This must have been the first time ever that the number 1 wasn't shown at all!...
Mercifully, on Sunday MTV Europe did show the number 1 - "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Artists For Grenfell... But I don't consider it a good thing that one has to watch the same edition of the chart several times in order to get a fuller picture...

1 DJ Khaled & Rihanna - Wild Thoughts 1 Up

With "Wild Thoughts" DJ Khaled scores his second number 1; the first - "I'm The One" - reached the top just 6 weeks ago. For Rihanna this is her first chart-topper since "This Is What You Came For", her collaboration with Calvin Harris.
...However, this is not all I have to say about Rihanna! Whenever she reaches the top, I must mention that she's the artist with the most number ones in the history of MTV Europe's European chart! If I'm counting correctly, she has a total of 18 number ones... and they would have been 19 if there was a European chart broadcast on MTV Europe between August 2012 and the end of 2013 ("Diamonds" would have reigned during that time)...
And then there's the fact that "Wild Thoughts" samples "Maria Maria" by Santana. How did that song do in this chart? It actually only peaked at number 7 in 2000!

"Mama" is Jonas Blue's third Top 3 hit after the chart-topping "Fast Car" and "Perfect Strangers", which reached number 2.
And speaking of the number 2 position... by going 2-30, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Artists For Grenfell records the biggest fall in this chart!

1 Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams & Katy Perry - Feels 1 Up

"Feels" is Calvin Harris's first number 1 since last year's "This Is What You Came For" - a collaboration with Rihanna (by the way, now he actually replaces her at the top!). Pharrell Williams's previous number 1 was the massive hit "Happy" at the beginning of 2014... while Katy Perry has already scored a chart-topper this year with "Chained To The Rhythm".
I'm really glad to see "One Last Time" by Ariana Grande here. It originally appeared in the chart a little over 2 years ago... As a matter of fact, this time I expected MTV Europe to start playing it several weeks ago - and at a much higher position...

"Something Just Like This" by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay first appeared in MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" chart in March - 5 months ago! Until now, MTV Europe refused to play the song... so it's a miracle that they have finally done it! What they played was the video for the "Tokyo Remix" of the song.
What is more important to me is that MTV Europe also finally started playing "Subeme La Radio" by Enrique Iglesias!!! To have TWO songs in Spanish ("Subeme La Radio" and "Despacito") broadcast on MTV Europe during the same edition of the chart is a historical moment! And it's even more impressive that MTV Europe played "Duele El Corazon" by Enrique Iglesias for the first time in the edition EXACTLY ONE YEAR AGO! For two years in a row MTV Europe are making a birthday present for me!

Louis Tomlinson's collaboration with Steve Aoki "Just Hold On" appeared in MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"... However, MTV Europe decided not to play it. But now MTV Europe have played Louis's newest single "Back To You"!
This is a monumental achievement! ALL 5 members of One Direction have appeared in MTV Europe's European chart as solo artists now! I don't think ANY group (consisting of at least 4 members) has accomplished this before... Spice Girls came closest but Victoria never managed to reach this chart...

Enrique Iglesias scores his fifth Top 3 hit in MTV Europe's European chart with "Subeme La Radio". The last time he reached the Top 3 was back in 2009 with "Takin' Back My Love" - 8 years ago! In fact, three of his previous four Top 3 hits peaked at number 3 - "Bailamos", "Hero" and "Takin' Back My Love". The highest peak position for an Enrique Iglesias single so far is number 2. So which of his singles achieved this? Astonishingly, "Escape"!

Wth happened to Axwell & Ingrosso?

Posted by: bobiloko Sep 6 2017, 12:26 PM

For some reason, MTV Europe skips some songs each week - even a couple of songs that they usually play! For example, they almost always skip the song that is currently at number 7 in the chart... And, judging by the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" chart, "More Than You Know" was the unlucky number 7 in this case...
It's the same reason why "Subeme La Radio" by Enrique Iglesias wasn't played during the previous 2 editions of this chart - it happened to be at number 7 in both of them...

Posted by: Euphorique Sep 6 2017, 12:37 PM

But it says Dua Lipa is #7

Posted by: bobiloko Sep 6 2017, 05:41 PM

Yes. Sometimes it seems like MTV Europe want to hide that they skip songs - then they show consecutive positions for the songs they play (as if there were no gaps between their positions)...

This chart is a mess.

1 Pink - What About Us

So Pink scores a number 1 in MTV Europe's European chart again - with "What About Us"! Her first chart-topper was 16 years ago, back in 2001 - "Lady Marmalade", her collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mya. A year later, in 2002, Pink had her first solo number 1 - "Get The Party Started". 2 more chart-toppers followed - "Stupid Girls" and "So What". There was no European chart broadcast on MTV Europe between August 2012 and the end of 2013, otherwise Pink might have had 2 additional number ones - "Blow Me One Last Kiss" and her duet with Nate Ruess, "Just Give Me A Reason".

Taylor Swift scores another chart-topper wirth "Look What You Made Me Do". She reached number 1 with "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" in 2014. The most interesting case is "Bad Blood". The song did appear in the chart (judging by the corresponding editions of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"), MTV Europe just never played it! It supposedly spent one week at number 1... however, unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch that particular edition of the chart! I will always wonder whether MTV Europe played "Bad Blood" at least during that edition... or they skipped the number 1!?...

Zayn scores his third number 2 hit with "Dusk Till Dawn" - the previous 2 were "Pillowtalk" and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" with Taylor Swift (whose "Look What You Made Me Do" was last week's chart-topper but is now a place below Zayn and Sia). Could "Dusk Till Dawn" finally give Zayn a number 1?
And MTV Europe finally played "Sun Comes Up" by Rudimental and James Arthur - weeks after it appeared in MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"...

2 Sam Smith - Too Good At Goodbyes 1 Down
1 Pink - What About Us 1 Up

"What About Us" by Pink is at number 1 for a fourth (nonconsecutive) week. Thus it equals the 4 weeks spent at the top of the chart by "Get The Party Started" back in 2002.
It's also notable that MTV Europe played 2 songs by Avicii - "Without You" and "Lonely Together". Usually when there are 2 songs by the same artist in a particular edition of this chart, MTV Europe just play one of them...

"Too Good At Goodbyes" returns at the top for a second (nonconsecutive) week. Sam Smith's only other chart-topper - "Writing's On The Wall" - spent a sole week at number 1 so at least by this metric "Too Good At Goodbyes" is now his biggest chart hit.

I had a feeling this would happen! "What About Us" by Pink is back at number 1 for a fifth (nonconsecutive) week - a total accumulated over 4 separate runs at the top! Thus it improves on the achievement of "Get The Party Started" by becoming Pink's first song to spend 5 weeks at number 1 in this chart! She first appeared in the chart with "There You Go" back in 2000... Well, Pink has waited for 17 years to score her biggest hit!

This is the eleventh time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.
MTV Europe played just 8 songs from the Top 20 during this edition of the chart. I don't think this is acceptable. For example, I really don't understand why the keep on skipping CNCO's "Reggaeton Lento" when they could play the version that is a collaboration with Little Mix. After all, they did play both "Despacito" and "Subeme La Radio" - and their videos are the versions which are only in Spanish!...

This is the twelfth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.
"Your Song" by Rita Ora reached number 2 in the chart earlier this year. Now "Anywhere" does one better by jumping from number 27 to number 1... The problem is that I don't think this is deserved (at least yet) - apart from the UK, the song isn't having success anywhere in Europe so far...

This is the thirteenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.
N*E*R*D* are back in the chart after 13 years. They appeared a couple of times - with "She Wants To Move" (which puzzlingly went as high as number 2) and "Maybe".
...And this all happened in 2004 - a year before their collaborator in their current single "Lemon" made her debut in MTV Europe's European chart... Rihanna would go on to become the most successful artist in the history of the chart - no one else has scored as many number ones...
Yet there is something even more remarkable in this edition of the chart - MTV Europe finally played "Mi Gente"! Although it could be said that it's offensively late - the song has already left the Top 20 and, judging by MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", it peaked at number 3...
It's a rare occasion to have a song not in English in this chart - and even rarer for the song to be in more than one non-English language! "Mi Gente" contains both Spanish and (a little) French. At the moment I can think of one other example - "Danza Kuduro" by Don Omar and Lucenzo, which was in both Spanish and Portuguese...

This is the fourteenth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40.
Mabel, who appears at number 27 with "Finders Keepers", is Neneh Cherry's daughter. Neneh Cherry's last appearance in the chart (so far) was in 1996 - 21 years ago! - with "Woman". 2 years earlier she had a massive hit - her duet with Youssou N'Dour, "7 Seconds".
It's nice to see MTV Europe play "Katchi". Judging by MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", Ofenbach's previous single "Be Mine" also reached the chart... but MTV Europe never played it!
...And it's not only that. They didn't show any of the songs placed between number 2 and number 5 in this edition of the chart. Those supposedly include "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, "Havana" by Camila Cabello and "Silence" by Marshmello and Khalid. All of these 3 singles have music videos so I don't see the reason why MTV Europe is skipping them. After all, isn't the point of the chart to SHOW the current biggest hits?!...

Let's look at the history of the singles from Ed Sheeran's latest album. Surprisingly, first "Castle On The Hill" appeared at number 1 in the chart but spent just a single week there... because it was immediately replaced by "Shape Of You"! The latter stayed at the top for 7 weeks.
Then came "Galway Girl", which "only" peaked at number 4... However, now "Perfect" becomes Ed Sheeran's third chart-topper from his current album!

...But now "Runnin'" reappears in the chart at number 30! However, it turns out that this is not so random. A few months ago "Runnin'" did re-enter the singles charts in France, Switzerland and Spain - and climbed as high as number 2 in the French chart!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED?

And "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid 30 is back for the first time since it topped the chart 3 years ago.
