I thought the other day that Robbie’s Angels was everywhere in the late 90s, the 00s and the early 10s, but it’s hardly ever played now and it’s not on TV these days.
Wonder why?
Can anyone else think of any other 90s songs that are just not around or played these days?
I've recently made myself a 90s compilation with a ridiculous amount of tracks - it's a seven disc affair with 60 tracks on each!!! (although I've done the Buzzjack hated thing of including a couple of late 80s and early 00s tracks that fit and haven't stuck to oh so strict rules! )
There were a lot of tracks that I could remember thinking would be classics but I couldn't recall the last time I'd heard them - Angels was the main one but other notable ones (that are not necessarily huge faves of mine) were I'll Be Missing You, I Don't Want To Miss A Thing, Nothing Compares 2 U, Paranoid Android, Common People... I'll stop there or nobody else will have a chance!
Anything by Robson & Jerome
I’ll Be Missing You is a good shout. I thought of Killing Me Softly as well - the biggest seller of 1996 but nowhere near as well known now as Wannabe which was beaten at the last minute.
I feel like some were absolutely killed by overplay! I don't feel like I need to hear Angels or I Don't Want To Miss A Thing again Common People and Nothing Compares 2 U definitely agree with!
I do feel like nearly all the 90's songs I know would only be because they are still played these days rather than a lost relic of their time!
Maybe it's different in the UK but I wish I heard Jennifer Paige's "Crush" more often. Amazing song!
Also, "Summer Son" by Texas I feel like I heard it everywhere when I was a kid but now the only time I hear it is when I put it on myself lol.
Yes good pint about Texas - they were omnipresent from 97 to the early 00s now hardly ever played.
I still regularly hear most of the songs in here!
The first that comes to mind is Madonna's 'Beautiful Stranger' - the number one song on airplay for 1999 and experienced a record number of plays in a week, yet I can't remember the last time I heard it on radio.
Also, I suppose it's probably different in the UK, but for such a huge song on a global scale I NEVER hear "Candle In The Wind 97" on the radio. I hadn't even heard it once in my life prior to maybe 10 years ago but it was still massive in Iceland at the time of Diana's death like in a lot of places in the world.
I always have Heart 90's on so I hear all Madonna and Texas tracks from then quite often
Adam Rickitt - I Breathe Again
Quite a lot from Eternal also, their ballads inparticular.
Emilia - Big Big World
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Candle in the Wind on British radio either, except for that one time radio 2 were doing a biggest sellers of all time countdown.
Candle in the Wind wasn't the type of song that you'd expect to hear though, it sold through vast levels of public emotion at the circumstance rather than any genuine desire to hear it ever again...
In fact it wouldn't surprise me if the vast majority of people who bought it never even played it.
Don't think I have heard Spaceman by Babylon Zoo once since the 90s.
Is it wrong that I still really like Spaceman? If anything, I think they were a bit ahead of their time
Terrorvision - Tequila from '99 is still an absolute stomper, especially the Mint Royale single version
^Forgot that "our chart friend" Mint remixed it
the piece of Spaceman in the ad was incredible, then when the song was released in full it was the biggest let down ever
The two Outhere Brothers #1 hits you don't really hear much any more.
