I hate French 2016 and 2017 entries and even wanted their withdrawn from contest (together with Ukraine, Italy and Russia).

Por Aquì had the potential to be on par with Chacun Pense à Soi in terms of MESS. What a missed opportunity.

In tonight's final, all 8 finalists will be performing Eurovision cover versions, the highlights being Bilal performing Fuego and The Divaz doing the contractually obligated version of Waterloo! Full list (and running order) here.

Conspiracy theorists will note Seemone being given the most recent French winner as her cover version!

But she's not doing 'C'est le dernier qui a parlé'?

Bilal wins, smashing the televote 150 points to second place 63.

A big struggle in the international jury vote suggests this will very much struggle in Tel Aviv, I expect France's worst result since 2015 certainly. Nevertheless, it's still a decent song but I would've preferred Seemone!

Beautiful! Well, he is*. Song needs a little bit of growing. But clearly the most memorable of what I saw tonight.

I've never been so 'meh' about a French entry before. On paper I should be full on stanning but, something just isn't there.

Agreed, it’s a bit meh. It’s no Mercy, which is actually my fave entry from France I think.

This is the classic dilemma of national finals - that huge televote thanks to Bilal's fanbase will count for nothing in Tel Aviv.

A much better song that Tous les deux but I agree it's missing something. It's like the whole package is there except the song if that makes sense, I love the message and what he stands for but while the song is growing on me, it's just not really doing it for me yet. It's one of those contemporary and safe enough pop songs that I enjoy but I can never get too excited about because it feels like it could go about 10 levels higher.

I am SOOO happy that they got it right and that this Eurovision season is off to such a good start. Definitely expecting this to be in my top 5 come May and have already booked my Eurostar to Paris*

Idk, the international jury was a funny one, 5th in the final but two points off a perfect score in his semi?! Like I get that different people have been part of the jury for each show, but in the final he was beaten by two songs that he easily beat in the Semi..so whilst his jury score in the final isn’t encouraging, I’m hoping it’s not a total write-off

(And I definitely wouldn’t have expected Seemone to get a significantly better result at the contest, I think it’s too French and not instant enough)

I thought the France NF was very poor IMO, spearheaded by this rather dull and uncharismatic singer winner. There will be the obvious comparisons to Conchita made, but everything that made Rise Like A Phoenix work perfectly, is mostly abscent from this. I can’t envisage France causing much trouble in May.

I'm pretty agitated with this competition. First, my most favorite song wasn't even in the finals due to the robbery by international juries and low number of votes from the public as well but it sounds the most interesting and unique to me (Gabriella - On cherche encore (Never Get Enough)). Roi is growing on me as it relates a lot to my current situation in terms of the lyrics and the voice, but instrumental- and structural-wise it isn't standing out much for me, a bit bland. Seemone has a great touching song but in my opinion I felt her finals performance was not as emotional as her semi-final 2 performance. Besides, the song doesn't boast a strong and different melody, as well as pretty ordinary instrumentation and arrangement, but still I think France has much better chance with Seemone.

If the jury hated it and the public hated it, maybe the song was just shit? I wanted 'Passio' through but it wasn't robbed just because everyone else realised it was a crap song.

Well the French juries all have On cherche encore in their top 3 and even one of them rank it as her most favorite song of the night. The song is not shit since there are lots of variations happening in the song (different tones in verses and choruses; verses, choruses and the bridge introduce three different musical ideas) and lots of unique instrumentation and techniques there as well (violin screeching and chromatic tremolos; a stripped introduction, followed by a guitar accompaniment in the verses, then a piano accompaniment and hi-hats in the buildup, then a very heavy bass in the chorus; possibly a power chord is used in the chorus (the third is not emphasized, or altering between a minor or major third)). The song is upbeat and catchy, as well as refreshing. Live performance is not destroying the song (vocals are shaky but not terrible since it is technically difficult vocally in live; staging makes sense but maybe two backup dancers might help as well as more choreography) I fail to see why it is a shit song to be honest.
